Our main focus at theNeighborhood News and Lifestyles is tobring the community something usefuland informative while getting peopleexcited about "buying local andshopping small!" When you shop smallbusiness you’re not helping a CEO buya third vacation home. You are helpinga little girl get dance lessons, a little boyget his team jersey, a mom or dad putfood on the table. A “mom and pop”business understands their customersare their shareholders and it's thosecustomers they strive to make happy.

In today’s rough economy, smalllocal businesses are closing their doorson a daily basis, while many bigcorporate businesses still have theinvestors and financial backing to pullthrough. There is nothing wrong withnational companies by any means, butby spending our money in locallyowned businesses we can help our local

economy flourish instead of decline. When we spend money locally, we

contribute to the wellbeing of theentire community. Local businessesbuild strong vibrant towns, linkingneighbors in a web of economic andsocial relationships. Local ownershipensures that important decisions aremade by people who live in thecommunity and thus, will feel theimpact of each decision they makedirectly. Many localbusinesses recycleexcess revenue bygiving back to thecommunity in whichthey live; whichenriches the area andcreates an evenbetter place to liveand love. Locallyowned and operatedbusinesses also createjobs and sometimespay even better than

the “big guys.”Competition is not a bad thing. A

marketplace of tens of thousands ofsmall businesses is the best way toensure innovation and above all, lowprices. For example, there are hundredsof restaurants within any given city, some of which operate right next toeach other. This is necessary in athriving economy. Can you imagine ifthere was only one type of each

business in each town? It would be amonopoly and the price of amonopolized product would beastronomical!

Entrepreneurship is what fuelsAmerica’s economic innovation andprosperity and serves as a key means forfamilies to move out of a low payingjob and into the middle and upperclass. By spending money locally, weare putting money directly back intothe community, therefore supportingyour family, your neighbors and yourfriends.

Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy

Kids and Canines - An Assistance Dog Training ProgramBelieving in kids and empowering

them to take control of their lives, onedog at a time, Kids and Canines unitesat-risk students and dogs in theirunique program that is truly making adifference in Tampa Bay community.

Located on the Dorothy Thomascampus in Tampa, Kids and Canineswas originally founded in 1998 with agrant from the Justice Department. The sole purpose of this programinitially was to help truancy students, founded upon the belief that givingthese kids the responsibility of trainingand caring for a dog would help tokeep them in school - and it worked! When the grant was not renewed, theprogram was continued as a part of theschool program at Dorothy Thomas, and the success rates have beenthrough the roof!

“The program has grownsignificantly since its inception,” saysJo Deck, Chairman of the Board forKids and Canines. “We are now a501(c)(3) organization, which we feltwas necessary in order to be able tosignificantly grow the program.”

Kids and Canines is an electivethat students at Dorothy ThomasSchool can apply for. Jo says, “This is aclass and our textbook is the dog. There is an academic side, but themost important things that we teachinclude how to not only show love

towards a dog, but how to loveyourself. Through this, the studentslearn how to properly deal with angermanagement and self esteem issues. The kids that we see have very seriousbehavioral issues; many have droppedout of school and have some sort ofsocial problems or personality disorder. Most are referred to Dorothy Thomasby either the school counselor or theirown personal child counselor.”

Once a student gets accepted intothe program, they sign a contract, which holds them accountable fortaking care of the dogs. They aretaught how to train the dogs, as well ashow to groom, feed, and properly carefor them. This encourages the kids tocome to school, and gives them areason to show up, because they knowtheir dog needs them, and if they don’tcome, their dog won’t get thenecessary attention it deserves.

In addition to the obviousbenefits, this program gives thesechildren so much more! It teachesthem unconditional love and givesthem self worth, helping them to buildtheir self esteem and give thempurpose in life. It teaches them theimportance and power of education. These dogs need the kids just as muchas the kids need the dogs. “Theprogram has been a huge success, andthe bond between the children and the

dogs has proven to be enough to keepthese at-risk kids in school,” says Jo.

Student Esme, is just one of theirmany success stories. Jo says, “Whenshe first came to us, Esme had suchbad self esteem that she didn’t come toschool for over a year. Working withthe dogs and the bond she formedhelped her learn unconditional love. She also learned acceptance withoutjudgement; the dogs relied on her on adaily basis; they needed her. Esme isnow an ace groomer and teachesgrooming to other students in theprogram. She has been in program forover three years and is going toGaither High School next year. Hergoal is to one day be a Vet assistant. And actually, she was recently adoptedand both of her parents are teachers atthe Dorothy Thomas School. This hasgiven Esme stability, love andacceptance in ways she has never hadbefore. Esme has done an amazing jobof turning her life around!”

Kids and Canines is helping tochange the lives of these students; andit doesn’t end there! Not only has theirprogram helped the students by givingthem accountability, companionshipand purpose, but the dogs that theytrain go on to become service andtherapy dogs for those in need.

“It is a win-win situation,” says Jo.“This program not only benefits the

kids, but it alsobenefits theperson whogets the dog.The kids trainthe dogs withthe hopes thattheir dog willgo on and doeven greaterthings in thecommunity. Our dogs aretrained to beservice andtherapy dogsand are placedwith manydifferent typesof people, suchas thosesuffering from Parkinson’s, MS, oryounger children with Autism.” Sinceits inception, Kids and Canines hasplaced 86 dogs throughout Tampa Bayand surrounding communities! Volunteers Wanted!

Due to their rapid growth overthe past few years, Kids and Canines isconstantly looking for volunteers.Their biggest need is for puppy sitters.Jo says, “Being a puppy sitter is such awonderful experience. As a puppysitter you would temporarily look aftera dog when a puppy raiser has to go

and Canines

out of town. We are also looking forpuppy raisers. A puppy raiser issomeone who agrees to house the dogfull time for 18-24 months as they arebeing trained. Everything is paid for -food, vet bills, leashes etc. - and all youhave to do is be able to drop them offevery morning before school and pickthem up after. Essentially it’s just likedropping your dog at day-care.”

Donations and SponsorshipsNeeded

Kids and Canines is doing somany great things for the community, but in order for them to continuedoing what they are doing, they relyon generous donations and

sponsorships from caring individualswho want to help make a difference.

There are many different ways inwhich you can help. The first is simplymaking a donation. That can be doneon-line or by sending a donationdirectly to the program. There aredifferent levels of giving that areoutlined in their Sustainer Program, including a $5000 donation to sponsorand name a dog! You are able tofollow the dog through its training andwill receive reports as to the how yoursponsored dog is doing, as well asprogress pictures. With this, you havethe ability to come visit the dog at anytime. All donations made go tohelping the at-risk children improve

their lives. Jo says, “The current Board of

Directors is a very active board andcommitted to the success of the Kidsand Canines Program. They arefocused on raising more funds andhelping more at-risk students changetheir lives!”

Kids and Canines is currently indesperate need of a van. Even havingdone a very successful fundraiser toraise funds for a new van, they havehad difficulty finding the right van forthe right price. Ideally, they need an 8-9 passenger van - preferably a FordT150, or a van with specificationssimilar. If you can help or knowsomeone who can help in this area, please call (813) 558-5406. Kids and Canines SummerCamp Program
