An exciting journey for the body, mind, and soul, at Quest Self Defense, they offer so much more than whattheir name implies! Meditation, lifeimprovement, self-development, ca-maraderie, and motivation are all partof the program. Although, if it is selfdefense you seek, the masterfullytrained instructors will teach you a va-riety of highly effective, highly usefulways to defend yourself against attack-ers who might be bigger, faster andstronger than you, while focusing on areasonable, functional, and less ex-treme approach to fitness.

Recently changing their namefrom Quest Martial Arts to Quest SelfDefense as a way to differentiatethemselves from those that offerMMA-style training, the name mightsound familiar - they have been at thesame location on Bruce B. DownsBlvd. in New Tampa for nearly 20years. They have recently moved to abeautiful new facility in WesleyChapel, behind the Mercedes-Benzdealership, at 2634 Cypress Ridge

Blvd. When you walk through thedoor it feels like old time Japan meetsup-scale industrial modern age.

“We are a life enhancing alterna-tive to cage fighting and sport-martialarts,” says owner, Mark S. Russo, who founded Quest alongside wifeHelen Russo. Basing their practice onNinjutsu, an ancient Japanese form ofself defense, Mark and Helen teachTo-Shin Do, which is a modernized, practical form that’s more applicableto Westernized culture. The only stu-dio of their kind in the state ofFlorida, Quest Self- Defense has stu-dents that travel from as far away asGainesville, Orlando, Sarasota, andMiami to train with these globallyrecognized instructors. They haveeven had students that have purposelyrelocated to this area so that theycould train at Quest Self-Defense.

Master Russo says, “We teachvery realistic self protection. It’s sci-entific and intelligent, as opposed tojust relying on being bigger, stronger, faster or more athletic. When we are talking about self-de-fense, you are usually dealing with a

predatory mentality, and a predator isnot looking for a fight. A predator islooking for prey that they perceive asweaker than them. So if your systemof self protection is based solely onbeing bigger, faster, or stronger, andyou just happen to not be geneticallybigger or stronger, then you are al-ready in trouble.”

Mark Sentoshi RussoWith over 50 years of experience

in martial arts, and as an 8th degreeblack belt in To-Shin Do, MasterRusso is the highest ranked To-ShinDo Senior Master in the world. He isrecognized as the senior Kasumi-AnTo-Shin Do instructor and has studiedmartial arts from the age of eight.Mark is a personal friend and studentof An-Shu Stephen K. Hayes, theWestern Authority on Ninjutsu, andoriginal founder of To-Shin Do, andhas trained in Japan with the Grand-master as well.

Helen Jotoshi Russo Helen Russo has spent 23 years

under the direct guidance of her hus-

band, and is one of only two womenin the world to hold the title of To-Shin Do Master instructor. As a 6thdegree black belt, aside from An-shuRumiko Hayes, she is the highestranking female Master Instructor inthe world. Born in Nigeria and raisedin Kent England, Jotoshi's charm anddisarming air stand in stark contrast toher outstanding skills as a master mar-tial artist. Having raised two childrenof her own, Jotoshi has an uncanny

ability to create rapport with childrenand encourage them to achieve newlevels of excellence.

Using their proven methods andtechniques, at Quest Self-Defense theywill help you identify your naturalstrengths and learn to use them effec-tively to defeat an attacker. For exam-ple, if you are a person of small staturethey will teach you how to be sneakyand evasive; if you are bigger andstronger they will teach you how tohold your ground effectively. “Ulti-mately, as you assimilate the principles

of the art you make it your own. It isdifferent than any other martial art onthe planet,” says Mark “I’m almost 60and I keep getting better at what I do.If your martial art is based on thingssuch as flexibility, strength, and con-ventional speed, then the older youget, naturally these things are going todecline. With To-Shin Do you getbetter with age as you continue to re-fine the principles and secrets for over-coming superior speed and strength.”

“We call this the ‘intelligent art’because you have to understand why

you are doing what you are doing,”says Helen. “A lot of martial arts arejust about being stronger and tougher. But that’s not the case with this art.Little women can defend themselvesagainst big men, and the same withchildren. It’s about out-smarting yourattacker, using superior body move-ments, body positions, dynamics andalignments. You don’t have to be inyoung or in shape. We have all differ-ent types of students from all differentbackgrounds. All walks of life come inhere and love it! It’s challenging, butit’s fun!”

But, as previously mentioned,Quest Self-Defense, is so much morethan just a self-defense studio. Theyare a community. Students don’t justgain knowledge in how to defendthemselves’ they also gain a sense ofcamaraderie, a place where you feel asthough you belong. Students alsolearn valuable life lessons in how tobetter themselves on many differentlevels, whether that be spiritually, fi-nancially, intellectually, psychologicallyor emotionally, to become the bestperson they can be.

Helen says, “It’s not just aboutself-defense, it’s about personal devel-opment; learning how to be a betterperson through martial arts and con-necting with both others and yourself. The art is really fascinating. It’s hardto describe, until you get in here anddo it it’s hard to imagine how muchthere is to gain!”

Everything they teach you atQuest Self Defense is based upon thefour elements of Nature: Earth, Water,Fire and Wind, each of which carrieswith it a strategy. The earth element, which is associated with power, is thepart of us that wants to be in control, and emphasizes grounded movement. The water element, which is associatedwith knowledge, is the part of us thatwants to know that what we believe istrue, and emphasizes the use of effec-tive angling. Fire, associated with en-ergy and connectivity, is that part of usthat seeks connection with otherhuman beings, and emphasizes criticaltiming. Wind, associated with action,is the part of us that wants to be inservice to something greater than our-selves, and emphasizes circular, evasiveand redirecting movement. Each of us

has these energies as part of our per-onalities to greater or lesser degrees. This program will help you to identifyyour natural strengths and weaknesses, and although you can never equalizeout all four elements, will teach youhow to maximize your naturalstrengths and minimize your weak-nesses. You will learn to apply thisknowledge in all areas of your life.

Master Russo says, “What weteach far exceeds just defending your-self against a physical attack. Living inthe United States, the probability thatyou are going to get physically at-tacked in the next 6 months is rela-tively slim. But, in the next 6 monthsyou will most likely get verbally at-tacked, emotionally attacked, psycho-logically attacked, and financiallyattacked. With all of these things, theprinciples we teach you in how to de-fend yourself physically apply in allthose areas of your life, because inmost of those situations you can’t justbully your way out.” Instead, the in-structors teach you how to deal withthose issues with skill and strategy, andguide you in how to use your ownpersonal strengths to achieve success.

Quest Self Defense will be host-ing an Open House on Saturday April30 from 1:30pm until 4 p.m. with anoptional FREE Introductory Class at1:45 p.m.

For the month of April, QuestSelf-Defense is offering for only$19, the chance to come try outtheir studio for 2 weeks, allowingyou to get the full experience be-fore fully committing to one oftheir programs.

Mark adds, “My favorite partabout what I do is seeing people takecontrol of their lives, becoming per-sonally powerful and building the lifethey want for themselves. I love suc-cessful and happy people and lovehelping people become successful. If Ican help create more happy and suc-cessful people, the world I have to livein becomes a better, happier place. This we call enlightened selfishness.”

Style MattersBy Alexis Selby

With her bold and boisterouspersonality and unique, upbeat flair, once you meet master stylist JacquieCaetano, you will instantly feel likeyou have been friends for years! Witha quaint little salon in the La Branchesuites, located in the plaza just be-hind Home Goods, at 18101 High-woods Preserve Parkway, Jacquieprides herself on giving her clientsquality customer service and excep-tional quality hair.

With over 31 years of experience,Jacquie has a style and personality thatis equally matched by her creativityand skilled techniques for hair. Special-izing in cuts, styles, and color, Jacquiehas gone through extensive trainingand has mastered virtually every style, both new and old. Whether you wanta vintage, classic, or modern look,Style Matters is your one stop shop!Walk-ins are always welcome, al-though Jacquie recommends youmake an appointment to ensure shehas adequate enough time to give youyour desired look.

While I was at the salon I had thepleasure of meeting Jennifer Cutcliff, along time client of Jacquie’s. Jennifer, who used to live in Tampa, now livesin Pennsylvania, but still comes toJacquie to get her hair cut and col-ored. She makes it a point to scheduleher hair appointments with Jacquiewhen she comes to town to visit herdaughter, who is currently attendingthe University of Tampa. She says,“I’ve been coming to Jacquie for over

15 years. She is awesome! Jacquie isreally good at razor cutting. When sherazor cuts my hair it drys in much lesstime and it falls better into place. Myhair can’t function without razor cuts.Jacquie is the kind of stylist that youcan just tell her to try something newand you don’t ever get nervous be-cause you know she is going to do afantastic job. I have done a lot of dif-ferent hair styles over the years, fromshort, to long, to back to short again, and pretty much everything in be-tween. She always makes me lookgreat! She is the best!”

Chances are if you have lived inNew Tampa long enough, you areprobably pretty familiar with Boston-ian Hair Studio - one of the first hairsalons to call New Tampa home.Jacquie’s father Joseph Caetanoopened the Bostonian Hair Salon in1988, and quickly developed a loyalgroup of clients. “We were the firstsalon in New Tampa,” says Jacquie. “Igot the opportunity to do pretty mucheveryone’s hair in this area and havegrown with my clients over the years.”A staple in the New Tampa commu-nity for over two decades, BostonianHair Salon sadly closed its doors in2009, after 21 years of business. But,that didn’t stop Jacquie from doingwhat she loved, so she continued todo hair, renting out a studio in SevenOaks. She has since moved locations, and her clients have happily followed, many of which have been with heresince the very beginning. “I haveclients who have been coming to mesince 1988,” adds Jacquie.

Working at and managing such asuccessful, large salon definitely hadit’s perks too. As a Redken PremierSalon, Jacquie has had a significantamount of training and education.Jacquie says, “We did so much Redkenvolume at Bostonian that we actuallyhad stylists from the Redken Exchangein New York come and teach at oursalon. Most stylists go to the RedkenExchange to get lessons; we got thetop artists to come to us!”

A true expert at razor cutting, ifyou are looking for a fabulous new cutthat perfectly accentuates your fea-tures, and really characterizes your per-sonality and lifestyle than come in and

book an appointment with Jacquie! “I am very picky about my hair-

cutting technique,” says Jacquie. “Idon’t just cut straight across, like moststylists. My technique is different thanwhat I just learned in beauty school; ithas evolved over the years and I havereally managed to hone in on myrazor cutting skills, which not a lot ofhair dressers do. Most stylists use reg-ular scissors and will only use a razorfor texturizing benefits. I am not abasic cutter; I will do a complete haircut using the razor. This ensures thatthe hair will fall soft, without lookingbulky - which is a main concernamong women.”

Master stylist Jacquie Caetano and her long time client Jennifer Cutcliff.Despite living in Pennsylvania now, Jennifer still gets her hair cut and

Jacquie also does haircuts for girlsas well. She does stress though, thatthis is not a basic kids cut. She says, “Idon’t rush through kids cuts. I deliverthe same attention, quality and expert-ise on a child as I do on an adult.”

Personalized customer service isvery important to Jacquie and sheprides herself on giving her clients herfull one-on-one attention each andevery time. As a client of Jacquie’s shewill never rush you out to work on thenext client and will always give you thefull attention you deserve. Jacquie isvery good at listening to what her

clients want, and before she eventouches their hair, she takes the timeto find out about their lifestyle and ex-actly how much time each day theywant to spend styling their hair, thatway she can recommend the perfecthaircut and style that can easily bemaintained at home.

Jacquie says, “When I have a newclient who has never been here before,I always start with a nice consultation.I find out how they live, their lifestyle, and how much time they spend ontheir hair, because I don’t want to givethem something they are never goingto be able to achieve on their own. Iwill also give them a good lesson whenI am drying their hair so they knowexactly what to do at home. I haveeven offered my clients the opportu-nity to come back and get a blow drylesson if they still can’t get the hang ofit. I really care about my clients.”

The perfect complement to ac-centuate your beautiful new hair style,Jacquie also has a nice selection of jew-elry for purchase, which can be viewedin the display case at her salon. Jacquieis constantly attending jewelry shows, searching for unique pieces that sheknows her clients will love. So, if yousee something you love in the displaycase, don’t hesitate to buy it - manytimes those pieces are one-of-a-kind

and once their gone, their gone. "Shegets really cute and trendy stuff,” addsclient Jennifer.

Getting your hair done shouldbe a relaxing experience, andJacquie’s salon provides the perfectlittle oasis to just sit back and unwindas your drift away in the salon chair.“It’s a more intimate atmosphere, and is great for those clients thatdon’t like a lot of commotion aroundthem,” says Jacquie. “I put on what-ever music you want and we can jamout and have fun.”

Good for the month of April,Jacquie is offering all new clientsher once-a-year $30 haircut, whichis nearly 50% off her regular prices! So if you are ready to get a trendy,New York quality haircut, for al-most half the price, than book anappointment with Jacquie and seethe difference for yourself!

When asked the favorite partabout what she does, Jacquie re-sponded, “The satisfaction in seeingmy clients’ reactions when they see thefinished results. As a re-sult, when a hormonal imbalance oc-curs, it can have drastic negative effects, such as fatigue, weight gain, decreasedsex drive, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and irritability. Often, these symptomsare overlooked and contribute to aging. Many seek treatment with their Pri-mary Care Providers and are given pre-scriptions for the symptoms they areexperiencing, such as anti-anxiety med-ications, sleeping pills, anti-depressantsor even Viagra.

This only masks the symptoms.Tampa Rejuvenation treats the rootof the problem instead of maskingthe symptoms.

weight and build muscle and are bet-ter able to control their emotions. Inaddition, many studies show optimaltestosterone levels in men - over 800 -can have preventive effects for manydisease states, such as cardiovasculardisease, Alzheimer’s disease, prostatecancer and osteoporosis.

Patient Angelica writes, “My jour-ney back to wellness started in July2015 when I found Tampa Rejuvena-tion. I wasn’t motivated and was tiredof feeling lousy every day. I was experi-encing heartburn, acid reflux, obesity, irritability, moodiness, fatigue, lack offocus, lack of motivation, sleeplessness, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, low thyroid, low testosterone and lowvitamin D. I was also at 41% body fat, which is considered morbidly obese.

I initially started with the HCGdiet and appetite suppressants to getthe weight off. When I discovered mythyroid was low I started taking a natu-ral prescription recommended by theirdoctor. On my next visit, Brett con-gratulated me on my results and saidhe would personally monitor my well-ness and guide me through the rest ofthe way. From that day, my wellnesshas improved exponentially. He lis-tened to my concerns and adjusted myHCG diet. He also mentioned mytestosterone was low and asked me to

consider HRT (hormone replacementtherapy). Probiotics and enzymes werealso recommended - they definitelymade a huge difference in helping withdigestion. I initially started with testos-terone shots but switched to the pelletsrecently, which have shown to be abetter option for me.

People always ask, “isn’t it expen-sive?” My response is… you eithertake care of your wellness on the frontend or the back end. You either pay tobe healthy and feel pure joy every dayor pay after you get Type II Diabetes,Cancer or whatever else your poor eat-ing habits and lifestyle have caused.

I am 36 now, but I spent most ofmy twenties depressed. A lot of paincould have been avoided if I had thisknowledge back then and this is why Ichoose to share my story today. I was-n’t born depressed. My poor eatinghabits and lifestyle choices caused myhormones to be out of whack, whichcaused all of my negative symptomswhich in turn was labeled depression.

Tampa Rejuvenation gave me mylife back. They leveled out my hor-mones and taught me to eat healthy. So I urge you to take charge of yourwellness. Educate yourself so you canmake an informed decision and stopmaking excuses. Get over your fear offailure and make the commitment to

get healthy. Your happiness dependson it. I AM LIVING PROOF!”

Despite all the positive advantagesof Hormone Pellet Therapy, TampaRejuvenation founder BrettMarkowitz knows there are alwaysgoing to be concerns, so he would liketo address your fears and help reassureyou that at Tampa Rejuvenation youare in good hands.

“Its really important to addresspeoples’ fears,” says Brett. “I think somany people try to push the advan-tages and the reality is, many times it’sthe patient’s fears that are holdingthem back. One fear people have withdoing hormones is that it’s going togive them cancer. And even thoughpellets are bio-identical, they are still ahormone. We take a very pro-activeapproach and focus on prevention. We always have a physician on staffand do regular blood work, as well asfollow-up and monitoring. Under theright supervision and by understand-ing each patient’s health history, hor-mone replacement therapy can bemade safe. Another major concernamongst patients is “what if I get thewrong dose?” This is why it is so im-portant to have a doctor withlongevity in the use of pellet therapy -which we have- because you want tomake sure each patient is given exactly

the right dose. We have very well-trained practitioners that will super-vise each patient and monitor theirprogress from beginning to end.”
