“As a travel photographer I spend days at the computer to work out the itineraries for my next photo trips. To find the location, to find parking close to the location, information about the walking time and difficulty, sample photos and and and... I look up the sun calculator to see when the light is right and when I shoot coastal scenes I ask the tide times tables. This takes a lot of time and effort. Since I know the South West of England like the back of my hand - I thought I could share with you my information about the photo locations in one of the most photogenic landscapes of Europe. The idea of a photo location guide was born. I hope this will help you to save time and energy for your next days out with your camera. I tried to make the choice of locations diversified. Some well known spots but also little hidden gems, some landscape and some villages and towns, some coastal spots and some rural locations. You probably won’t like all of it and for sure this is not a complete location guide, in South West England there are so many spots for photos. But I hope with 125 locations I gave you a good variety and choice for your next photo trip. I wish you always good light!” Joana

Counties The Counties of South West England are colour coded and have a specific letter. (In addition there is an excursion into the New Forest, officially not South West but very close by and well worth a visit with a camera.) You will also find the outline of the county of the photo spot at the top of the page. The dot in that outline shows the approximate area within the county. Dorset: Locations A1 – A40 Wiltshire: Locations B1 – B7 Devon: Locations C1 – C26 Somerset: Locations D1 – D9 Cornwall: Locations E1 – E26 New Forest: Locations F1 – F17

How to use this book

Location page On each page you will find the following elements:

1. some background information about the location 2. a sample photo of the location 3. a section of a map of the exact view point with a sun calculator 4. ratings for access, difficulty and safety 5. the address 6. the name of the next possible parking area 7. walking directions and walking time 8. a description of the viewpoint 9. details about best daytime, season and tidal times 10. further information about the area

Sun Calculator Map Each photo location comes with a sun calculator map. The pin shows the exact point where the sample photo was taken. If you use for example Google Maps on your phone while you are travelling, you can compare exactly your position with the original position. The map is aligned with the compass points – the top is North, the bottom South, right is East and left is West. It also shows you the direction of the sunlight. Yellow shows the sunrise Orange shows the sun at noon. Red shows the sunset. The day is set on 21 March when day and night are equal. So if you come to that spot in summer – you know that the sunrise will come more from the North East while in winter it will be more South East.

The address of the photo location. We recommend to NOT use the postal code for your Sat Nav since in the rural areas of the South West it is not very precise and might guide you to a wrong place. We tried to name the locations as Google Maps know it, so you can find it easier.

The name of the closest car park. Whenever possible, the name of the car park is used which can be found in Google Maps. So you simply have to type in the name to get directions. If Google Maps doesn‘t know the name, there is a more detailed description how to find the car park.

Gives you walking directions, starting from the car park mentioned above. Tells you also how long you have to walk to the photo spot.

A description of the exact viewpoint, where to position your tripod, what kind of lens you can take etc.

Tells you at what time and in what season this is a good photo spot. If tides are involved, it gives you also an indication if low or rather high tide is recommended.

Gives you additional information about the area. What else is to see/to photograph near by?

SHAFTESBURY The famous Gold Hill in Shaftesbury is supposed to be the prettiest street in England. On a steep hill with cobble stones you have a very picturesque view of the old cottages and in the background the green hills of North Dorset.

Parking on the High Street, or park in the Angel Lane Car Park

Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, SP7 8HB, Dorset

In between the church and the Town Council there is a little foot path to the viewpoint. Walking distance from car park: approx. 5 mins.

The classic view point is on top of the hill, right in front of the pub “The Salt Cellar”. But it is worth to go down the hill (and unfortunately up again) to take a photo from the bottom.

Best in the winter months during sunset. Arrive one hour before sunset, so you catch the golden light on the cottages. Also sunrise and night shots are very charming.

There is also a nice viewpoint just a 3 mins walk away: The “Park Walk” with good views over the hilly landscape.

Pulpit rock is an artificial stack and a quarry relic on the Isle of Portland. The large slab leaning against the main stack should remind on a bible leaning on a pulpit. It is a very popular photo spot.

Portland Bill Car Park

Pulpit Rock, Portland DT5 2JT, Dorset

Go to the right of the lighthouse and follow the footpath until it ends. Walking time approx 10 mins.

Climb down carefully the rocks until you reach a rocky platform. Portland is a very rough and stormy place. You better don’t do this during high tide and/or a storm. On a calm day and mid or low tide, you can easily walk on the platform. Be carefully during rain, when wet it is slippery.

This point of view works best for me 1-2 hours before sunset in a golden evening light.

The other side of the Pulpit Rock, also reachable over a rocky platform, is a nice sunset spot. It is a bit easier to reach. You may combine this with location A34.

West Bay is a small harbour village in the West of Dorset with lovely views over the high and steep East Cliff and East Beach and the Jurassic Coast.

Quayside Car Park at the harbour. Pay and Display car park.

West Bay, Pier Terrace, DT6 4ER, Dorset

Walk to the short (East) side of the harbour wall, 2 mins walk.

Best view you get from the beginning of the harbour wall or from the sand dune next to it, so you can capture the curve of the bay in the foreground.

A perfect sunrise spot in winter. Late afternoon light the whole year round very nice too, when the warm light lets the cliffs glow orange.

If you take a walk around the harbour, you can take some good photos on the bridge towards the marshland with some reflecting buildings in the water. The harbour itself is also nice with colourful fishing boats. Carry on walking (just a few mins.) and you will reach the West side of the harbour wall which gives you a good view over the West Cliff: If you have a lot of energy – try to climb up the East Cliff and you will be rewarded with a fantastic view over West Bay. You may combine this with location A39.

Great Chalfield Manor is a picture perfect manor, including a little private chapel, in the heart of Wiltshire. Many period films are shot here, including some scenes of Poldark.

Parking allowed on the lawn left and right from the road, in front of the main gate

Great Chalfield Manor, Atworth, SN12 8NH, Wiltshire

No walking involved, you park straight in front of your view point.

You don’t have to pay entrance fees, the best point of view is from the road towards the manor and the chapel.

Avoid to come midday, the sun is against you. Better early or late. Since your view point is outside the actual estate, you are independent of opening hours.

A walk in the gardens of this estate is definitely also worth it.

Salisbury is a cathedral city in Wiltshire, not far away from Stonehenge. Not far away from the city centre there are the Water Meadows and the Town Path, from where you can get lovely views to the cathedral.

Lush House Car Park

Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury SP1 2EJ, Wiltshire

From the car park turn right and cross the Queen Elizabeth Gardens. You will reach the Town Path. The bridge over the river Avon is the spot for this photo. Walking time 5 mins.

The bridge is wooden and the path is very popular for locals to walk into the city. You have to be a bit patient until nobody is walking over the bridge and spoiling your long exposures.

Sunrise spot, best in winter or spring on a foggy but promising sunny day.

If you continue walking the town path, you will find more beautiful views to the cathedral with the water meadows in the foreground. In winter the meadows often become flooded and you might even get a reflection of the catthedral. A bit further on and you will reach the Old Mill, now a pub and hotel. Also worth a photo with reflections in the river.

This picture perfect red roofed old barn is set in a fairy tale like landscape with green and mossy walls and old trees. It might look good on a sunny summer day, but it shows best the atmosphere of gloomy Dartmoor on a wet and misty autumn day. Good news is – you won’t have to wait long for that kind of weather...

Saddle Tor South Car Park

Emsworthy Farm, Ilsington, Newton Abbot, TQ13 7TT, Devon

Just walk straight onwards from the car park, along the walls, until you’ll find a gate to your left. Go to that gate and continue walking, you will see soon the red roof of the barn. It is a 15 mins walk, all flat.

Try to play with the mossy walls and take them as a leading line towards the barn.

Best in autumn or spring on a foggy or misty day to make it as mysterious as possible. Early morning is always best for fog.

Once you are here, don’t turn around and go back – have a look at location C8, you have already mastered 1/3 of the way of that location when you reached the cottage.

Ilfracombe is a coastal town in North Devon. Besides being a popular tourist destination, the town offers some very good photo opportunities due to its rugged coast.

Car park Ilfracombe Harbour

Chapel of St Nicholas, Ilfracombe EX34 9EQ, Devon

This viewpoint is taken from the car park, so no walking involved.

Good sunset spot or in the early morning.

There is a lot more to see in Ilfracombe, you can spend certainly a few hours here taking photos. Also in the harbour there is the statue “Verity” which shows a pregnant woman. Walk the Capstone Parade and see some good views of the town including the theatre “The Landmark” which looks a bit like a nuclear powerstation in the middle of the town (during low tide is more interesting as the bay will reveal some picturesque rocks). You may also consider a nice but strenuous walk uphill the coast path to the East to get some lovely views over Ilfracombe. To the East there are the “Tunnel Beaches”.

Access: Walking: Safety:

Lean over the harbour wall and position your tripod as much as possible to the right to capture the chapel.

Blackchurch Rock is a large arch sea stack, found at Mouthmill Beach in the North Devon area on the Hartland Peninsula. The tide is very extreme in this area, so only during low tide the full arch and the impressive ledges in the foreground are visible.

National Trust Brownsham Carpark

Blackchurch Rock, Hartland, Bideford, EX39 5SY

Exit the car park back to the road and turn left. Follow the footpath and pass a farm. Carry on walking through Brownsham Wood. After one mile there is a crossing, turn left and continue walking until you reached the beach. Walking time 30 mins. Relatively flat, a bit uphill on the way back.

To see the two arches in the rock you have to go out quite a bit into the sea during low tide. Try to take the ledges and possible pools as a leading line.

Only visible during low tide and max 1 hour before and after. Good sunrise spot or nicely lit in the evening with golden light.

Don’t go there on your own. It is very remote and in the early morning you will meet probably no one for hours. The beach is a boulder beach and the ledges very slippery. When you have a fall, there is no help, neither phone reception. Don’t get caught by the tide, the sea is very rough in that area and comes quicker than you might think.

Wells is a cathedral city in Somerset. Vicar’s Close is a small alley in Wells, which is claimed to be the oldest purely residential street with original buildings surviving intact in Europe. It is a very pretty and photogenic site.

If you are lucky, there is available road parking on Cathedral Green. Otherwise Market Place.

Vicar's Close, Wells, BA5 2UH, Somerset

Cross the road “Cathedral Green” and find the small entrance to Vicar’s Close to the South. Walking time 2 mins or 5 mins from Market Place.

Works all day. A nice summer sunset will highlight the sky over the close.

Wells is very nice to visit, I’d recommend to spend here some hours and visit the Bishops Palace and Gardens, the cathedral, the pretty square and take a walk around the moat.

Access: Walking: Safety:

To shoot to both directions of the close is recommended as both are as pretty but offer a different impression.

The wooden lighthouse in Burnham-On-Sea is a small lighthouse on legs, directly on the beach. While during low tide standing in the sand, it becomes totally submerged by the sea during high tide which makes it even more attractive for photos.

Best to park in the Trinity Lane.

Low Lighthouse, Burnham-on-Sea TA8 2HS Somerset

Where the Trinity Lane makes a right bend, there is a small foot path to the beach. Follow this path and turn right on the beach until you reach the lighthouse. Walking time approx. 15 mins.

Sunset spot all year round. Mid tide best, to have some water around it but not too much to loose the reflection.

Walk along the beach to the North West and take some photos of the seafront of Burnham-On-Sea.

Access: Walking: Safety:

Next to the lighthouse there is a little pool which will have most of the time water, even during outgoing tide. Very good for nice reflections.

WHEAL OWES

The ruined old mine buildings seem to be not in the right place within this scenic Poldark landscape. But that is exactly the certain charm of this photo location.

Car park on top of the cliffs, next to The Count House.

Botallack, TR19 7QQ, Cornwall

Walk down to the coast path and turn left until you see the building with the chimney.

Sunset spot in winter and early spring and late autumn.

The whole landscape of that area with the abandoned mine buildings is very attractive for photographers. So it is worth to walk along the coast path in both directions. You can combine this with location E13.

Position yourself so you get all three ruined buildings in the frame. There is also an overgrown wall which can give a nice leading line.

TREBARWITH STRAND

CORNWALL

© Copyright 2018 www.phototourgroup.com Joana Kruse

Trebarwith Strand is a small coastal hamlet. For photographers it is a must for a sunset shoot – the black slate layers of the rocks with green moss, the little stream and as a backdrop an islet.

Car park just above the Strand

Trebarwith Strand (or Beach), PL34 0HB Cornwall

Go down to Strand along the road, walking time approx. 5 mins.

Sunset shoot. If the tide is in you can get some dramatic waves crashing over the slate rocks.

Climb up the rocks to the right and go around the corner. There is a natural platform with very good views over the coastline – best to do this before your sunset shoot to capture the golden sun on the black slate rocks. If the tide is out you can carry on walking to a sandy beach with caves and rockpools. Not reachable during high tide. The slate is very slippery when wet – take care.

Access: Walking: Safety:

Just at the beginning of the Strand there is a small stream. Position your tripod so you get the stream as a leading line towards the islet in the background.

LONG WATER LAWN

© Copyright 2018 www.phototourgroup.com Joana Kruse

Not easy to find – but well worth the little walk to the lawn. It is a green and lush lawn where the Beaulieu river is still a small trickle and meanders beautifully through the grassland, framed by old trees, accompanied by cows and ponies.

If you drive the B3056 from Lyndhurst to Beaulieu you will find a lay by to park, just opposite of the road to Limewood Hotel.

Long Water Lawn, Beaulieu Rd, Lyndhurst SO43 7FZ New Forest, Hampshire

Follow a footpath to the North through the heather. When you reach a bridge, turn right. 35 mins walk.

Best during winter for sunrise on a frosty morning or in spring. Works well for sunset from the other side of the river, you can walk on the lawn.

Very boggy, don’t forget your Wellies. If you are lucky, there will be cows and ponies grazing. It is a hidden little gem.

Once you reached Beaulieu River, find one of the bends and use a wide angle lens to capture as much as possible of the river and the lawn.

Hurst Point Lighthouse is a nice white lighthouse in a scenic surrounding, in the middle of marshland at the top of the point, surrounded by water.

Side road parking at the end of New Lane, Milford on Sea

Hurst Point, Milford on Sea SO41 0TQ New Forest, Hampshire

Take the bridge over the wetland and turn left direction lighthouse. Walking time approx. 25 mins.

Late evening light or sunset in summer works best. If you change your position you can capture also a nice sunset in winter.

Walk to the right side of the lighthouse to the beach to capture the sunset. On your way to the lighthouse you may capture on a still day good reflections of the lighthouse in the pools of the marshland. Next to the lighthouse is Hurst Castle (not a real castle but a military fort) which might be of interested for you.

When you arrive at the end of the headland, there is a little ferry jetty. You can take this lifesaver as your foreground.

HATCHET POND

Hatchet Pond is one of the larger ponds in the New Forest. On a still day you get lovely reflections of the trees.

Car park next to the pond

Hatchet Pond, SO42 7WE New Forest, Hampshire

From the car park walk to the left along the pond. 1 min walk.

Works best in spring or autumn at sunset. Often used for star photography as little light pollution.

Walk around the pond to capture some different views. On the other side of the pond there is heather land with some nice windswept trees.

Take your wide angle lens and position your tripod as low as possible and as close to the water (or in the water) as possible to capture the trees like a little island.

Joana is an award winning photographer focused on travel photography and fine art. She is also creating photos for book covers. Asked from where she comes from, she answers that she is from Europe - as she has already lived in Switzerland, Italy, Germany and is now based in England. New inspiration and different cultures are important to her and this can be seen in her photography. For her work she is travelling around the world at least ones a month. To either shoot photos for travel magazines and guides, or to guide interested photographers to the best photo locations. Her work is represented by agencies around the world (Getty, Alamy, arcangel and more). You can also find calendars and fine art prints by her on Amazon or Fine Art America. In South West England, where she lives, she is the founder and organiser of a very successful and active landscape photography group with more than 800 members. When she is doing 1:1 tuition or guiding small groups, she can easily "infect" other ambitious photographers with her passion for the camera. You will hardly see her without her gear in her hands. If you want to meet her - go on the Dorset hills during sunrise, to the Hampshire coast during sunset or on the muddy moors with Wellies. That is where she spends most of her time if she is not travelling or guiding tours. All photos in this book are taken by Joana.
