The SUMMER DUBOSE EUCHARIST AND PICNIC
A REGIONAL CELEBRATION OF EPISCOPAL MINISTRY AND MISSION
This Sunday, August 24th
at the Dubose Conference Center beginning at 10:30 am
This is the one Sunday a year when STEM closes individual churches to meet and
worship as one congregation. There will be a potluck picnic following the worship
service. Bring your bathing suits as the pool will be open especially for the kids, our athletes, and young at
heart! We will begin setting up at 9:00 am so please plan to arrive early to help. We will be joined by members
of St. James, Sewanee and there are usually a number of visitors as well. It will be held in the Outside Pavilion
& Pool at the DuBose Conference Center in Monteagle. Contact Fr. Bill or your STEM Council members for
more information.

STEM OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES It’s Walkathon time again!
The STEM churches are planning to participate in both the Multi County Cancer
Support Network (MCCSN) Walkathon on Friday, September 12, 2014, at the old High
School football stadium in Winchester and in the Alzheimer Association’s Walk to End
Alzheimers on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the South Jackson Street Civic Center
in Tullahoma.
These two organizations work to support both those with the diseases and their
families in our 8-county area. We would like for all STEM Church Members - and any
others interested - to have the opportunity to contribute to our efforts both by joining a walking team and/or by a
financial contribution.
The MCCSN Walk is a fun-filled and inspiring evening. Events begin around 6:00 pm with the Survivors
Lap – all survivors are invited to fill out the attached Survivor form, receive your free survivor T-shirt, and join
this celebration. Other events at this walk include tent decorating contest, musical entertainment, the Candle
Lighting Ceremony, food, and lots of fun. Candle Forms are also attached and may be purchased for
$10.00/candle, in memory or in honor of someone. Activities last until about midnight.
The Alzheimer’s Walk begins around 9:00 am at the South Jackson Street Civic Center grounds. There
will be music, activity booths for the children, a doggy area for your 4-legged companions, the “flower garden”,
and informational booths from various local nursing facilities. The walk usually starts around 10:00, going from
the Civic Center to Walgreens and back (about 2 miles), or as far as you want to walk. Activities are usually over
by noon.
Forms and other walk information are attached. We will have forms at all churches for your use. These
can be turned back in to Laura Lowndes, P.O. Drawer 70, Estill Springs, Tennessee 37330.
At our Dubose Mountain Ministry Eucharist and gathering, we will have available collection jars where
you can deposit your loose pocket change – “OUR CHANGE FOR OUR CAUSES”. We will also have available
sign-up sheets if you would like to become a Walker in either or both walks, Survivor Sheets if you are a cancer
survivor and would like to participate in the Survivor Lap, and Candle Sheets if you would like to purchase a
candle for the Candlelight Service at the Cancer walkathon. Walker sheets will also be available to the
Alzheimer’s Walk. Additional information about both groups will be available.
You can also contact Laura Lowndes at 931-691-0225 if you have any questions. If you would like to
be a “walk contact” at your church, please let me know.

Points to Ponder from The Rev. Dr. Judith Hirsch-Fikejs
The Rev. Judith Hirsch-Fikjes is a member of Trinity
and she is the organist at Trinity and Christ Church Alto.
Okay, folks, you heard it here: the Seven Great Words of the Church!! “We've-Never-Done-
It-This-Way-Before!” Anyone who has been in any church in America, especially churches that
have been around for a while, has heard these words uttered, especially when someone comes
up with a new idea for Christian Education, Evangelism, Community Outreach or music in the
worship service. It is the set of words that has often shut down any new ideas that manage to
float around any given congregation.
But let's face it: if our congregation is going to grow, then we have to be open to the working
of the Holy Spirit. And if memory serves, God said that he was going to do a “new thing” among
his people. For some folk, change is very upsetting. Change is threatening. Change means that
everything we love and treasure about any church is seen as being driven away. Yet if we are
going to grow then we must change. Growth=Change=Grieving. It means that our message
hasn't changed, our directives from the Lord to spread the Gospel haven't changed, and people's
need for the Good News hasn't changed. What can and must change is the willingness of God's
People to “go” with whatever the Lord brings into our midst, whether that be new people, new
ideas, new methods, etc. Yes, some things will change, but what will never change is our
connection in Christ, our bonds of family as we are grafted into Christ's Body, our hope for the
future, and our love for God. Now we have an opportunity to turn that love into action, perhaps
in ways that are still viable or possibly by grasping on to new ways of telling the Old, Old Story
of Jesus Love. Until next time . . .
