Hey Folks,We hope this fi nds you doing well.
We've been on a whirlwind of back to back trips and fi nally back home to prepare this issue. We attended a Blue Knights International Convention in Hot Springs, Arkansas and met some wonder-ful new friends: Ed and Wendy Skotarek, Al and Marie Watt from Canada. Ed and Al rode their motorcycles all the way from western Canada and put over 4,700 miles on their bikes one way! That's some serious traveling. We also met Ron Fritter from the coast of North Carolina. We truly enjoyed meeting our new friends and look forward to traveling to visit them in the future. As I've said be-fore about the motorcycle world, there
are just friends we haven't met yet. The motorcycle world is a very giving and caring group of people who
stand up for others, pull together when others are down, and open their wallets to give to numerous charities that seem to multiply exponen-tially each year. I am so glad we are a part of this group. JD Vincent is one example. JD was recently hospitalized with double pneumonia and fell on hard times as he was out of work for a while and bills piled up. Knoxville Harley-Davidson put on a benefi t for JD and the community stepped up to the plate. Over 200 bikes road through rain and sunshine at times for JD and raised much needed funds for JD. That's what I'm talking about! That's what we do!

On Armed Forces Day, the Ameri-can Legion Family gathered Sat-
urday at the Paul W. Airey Post 392, Panama City Florida to benefi t a vet-eran struggling to pay for his cancer treatment.
David Wood is a Vietnam Veteran and member of the American Legion. He was diagnosed with third-stage esophageal cancer, which spread to his lymph nodes in November. David Wood and his wife, Pat Wood, moved from Panama City to their dream cab-in in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, two years ago. They returned to Lynn Haven, Florida after his diagnosis to be with family and friends.
When the family’s fi nancial strug-gles became known to their local American Legion family, a “Call to Arms” readied Legionnaires. The American Legion Family quickly put a

plan into action and organized a huge charity event, their biggest ever. Peo-ple donated to the David Wood ben-efi t from several locations around the southeast. With stops at Ms. Newby’s, The Buoy, Flashbacks, Coyotes and Annie’s Hideaway, riders then fi n-ished the ride to the American Legion Post for a pig roast, games, raffl es, live music and a benefi t drawing. At the close of the benefi t, the Wood’s fam-ily was overwhelmed by the support as the Post Commander presented the family with the charity proceeds $11,822.31.
The American Legion Family con-tinued throughout the night and brought in another $1345.25 for do-nations totaling $13,167.56. It was a great event for a great American vet-eran, one of our heroes.

The city of Maryville opened its arms to roar and delight of HOG
members from all over the country. The city even opened up (never be-fore had they in the past) their historic downtown streets for a night of HOG for several blocks. The 2013 Tennessee State HOG Rally drew HOG members from as far away as Australia. With motorcycle enthusiast riding roads like the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, The Snake, The Devil’s Triangle and more; it’s no wonder so many came to this year’s event.
Several riders expressed their en-joyment of riding through the hills of Tennessee and the local folks enjoyed having them there. Wayne Johnson, a

Tail of the Dragon rookie said, “I’ve wanted to ride the Dragon for years and I’ve fi nally got my sticker show-ing I’ve been here.” Southern Biker Magazine’s Road Crew took several “never ridden it before” riders up and back down from the Dragon. The smiles on their faces told us, they had a whale of time! “We just wanted to add something to the event for those that might not be as confi dent in rid-ing that 11 miles and its 318 curves”, said Southern Biker Magazine’s pub-lisher, Kristin Gracy.
Jerry Palladino and his profession-al group of “Ride Like a Pro”, put on a spectacular display of riding. The Wall of death guys took their tips from

TN State HOG Rally Rides into the Smokies
...continuedthe hands of on lookers from the top of the wall as they hurled their motor-cycles passed them at 30 or so miles per hour. Musical performers were abundant throughout the event and included Marty Stewart and one of our Road Crew’s favorite, Mustang Sally. There were lots of different rides to go on including rides for beginners to the ladies only ride to the Adrenaline Ride for those experienced enough to handle aggressive riding. There was even some HOG drag racing action at the 1/8th mile English Mountain Dragstrip.
It was another great HOG event in
Tennessee and we’re headed back to Cookeville for the 2014 TN State HOG Rally. Make your plans early and get your hotel reservations made. It is sure to be another HOG Rally that goes over the top.

My husband and our friends got together one day to plan our
next ride. I suggested that we go on the Back of the Dragon event, The Awakening that Monster was putting on in Tazewell, Va.
We started out slow as we got onto State Route 16, aka Back of the Dragon. State troopers love hanging around Hungry Mothers Park, and sure enough, we passed about fi ve of them, before we made it to the top of Walker Mountain.
On our way down, we knew now we could relax and enjoy the curves. The winding road took us through a lot of twisties and some tight curves before we began our climb up Brushy Mountain. We passed fellow bikers as they were doing their best to slay this beast of a ride.
Climbing up Clinch Mountain, we knew it was the last mountain we had and that our ride was almost over. Then we hit the valley fl oor. Riding through looking at all the farmland reminded me how life was simple. It

was almost as if time stood still here in this quiet little town.
We stopped off to gas up in Mar-ion at Thompson Valley Market. The owner Ronnie Mullins, was nice and showed us the signing board he had for all the riders that passed by could sign, and he also offered pictures for riders in front of the sign he had posted up in the grassy area beside his store. He sells t-shirts, hats and other things that people can buy to remind them about their ride.
He told us about a group we just missed that was from Virginia. They were the VA Deaf Bikers. This group was lead by Gordon Boerner. Every-one is this group was deaf, and was not about to let that slow them down any. I just hate that I missed them. It would have been an honor to meet these people, living their dreams no matter what life challenges they must face. Ronnie was nice enough to share their photo with me.
After talking to him, we went out-side to get ready to leave when we de-
cided to take some pictures of the sign. Here we met some more nice people. One of them was, Mark McKee the di-rector of ABATE VA Hole in the Wall. I left Thompson Valley Market smiling and thankful for the new friends I met there.
We headed on our way towards Tazewell to see the show. Once we entered into Tazewell, we noticed something that ran across the road. To our surprise, it was a black bear. We stopped to take some pictures of it, as it was trying to make its escape. Af-ter a good laugh, we headed on to the Awakening.
As we pulled up, there were bikes lined up all in front of the tape they had blocking off the parking lot for the show. We entered contests to win bikes, toolboxes, and a lot more. The smell of the BBQ was making all of us hungry so it was time to eat.
The Monster spokesperson brought the crowd in to watch the show, by making jokes. Then he intro-duced the Mon-ster Dirt Bike Stunt Team three riders; John Distler, Brain McGn-arty, and Gar-rett Aulf. They jumped their dirt bikes 75

Downtown Sevierville thundered with hundreds of motorcycles
who came to pay tribute to all Ameri-can fallen military soldiers. The cer-emony kicked off with Kelley Stout singing the American National Anthem with the help of American Bald Eagle, “Mr. Lincoln” from the American Eagle Foundation. T.C. Barnett, Jessie Bar-nett and Kaleb James Wright singing America the Beautiful followed shortly thereafter.
Retired Lt. Col. Don Campbell, a pi-lot during the Vietnam War and flew 118 combat missions in an F-100, was the special guest speaker this year. Of-ficers T.C. Faulconer and Kevin Stone did the wreath placement on behalf of law enforcement and firefighters, pro-tecting the front lines of our country, followed by Gold Star Mothers Presi-dent Brenda Shelton and Sherrie Battle McGhee. Smitty Giles did a tremendous job playing taps at the same time the wreath presentation was being done.
Kickstands went up for a 65 mile ride to Grainger County’s Veteran’s Overlook. Sevierville City PD and Sevi-er County Sheriff Department, escorted over 1200 motorcycles on a safe ride through five counties assisted by all of the counties’ law enforcement. During the route, Morristown FD presented a huge American Flag on top of their lad-der truck for all the riders to go under. It gave you goose bumps to see it, then to ride under.
The closing ceremony on top of the mountain consisted of placing of the wreath while Taps was played by Smit-ty Giles and Kelley Stout sang “Till the Last Shot’s Fired”. During the pause in the song, Honor Guard American Le-gion Post 202, Gatlinburg, did a 21 gun salute, then the song finished.
Thanks to all who participated and helped make Memorial Weekend for remembering, to pay Tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for our Free-dom.

I fi nally got time to go and listen to the guys collectively known as Grits
from Dumplin’ Valley after not seeing them for a while. I had my friend and drummer Mark Havely give me their new CD, “TN Weather” and he told me it was different than what I had heard before. “No problem”, I said, “I like all kinds of music.” On my way to visit with the TN National Guards-men in Nashville, I put the CD in and I’m here to tell you, I love their new sound on this CD. This kinda Blues just fi ts me to a tee. They even asked and got Chris Marion, keyboardist for Little River Band to contribute keys and vocals to the project.
Grits, More Than Just a SideBy The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
Mark Havely Noe Cruz
Rick Sharp Rob Higginbotham
From their former days of Southern Country/Rock/Blues style, the band has developed and grown into a mu-sical dream team with the diversity unmatched. Most bands can only play one style but Grits seems to be able to get it right, whatever style you ask for, they have it in their bag.
Grits formed in 2006 when drum-mer Mark Havely and Noe Cruz, an Apache Native bass player left their western United States homes for the rural life in East Tennessee. Eventu-ally hooking up with guitarist Rick Sharp and blues guitarist Rob Hig-ginbotham, the band has evolved into an awesome musical group that cover broad styles from blues to funk to old school rhythm and blues with a little country thrown in at times.
With over 150 years of combined professional experience, Grits always delivers just the right blend of musical entertainment for any event. Check them out at www.gritsfromdumplin-valley.com because everything does indeed go better with a side of Grits.

Sweet PicklesFeatured Recipe by Chef John Morris
It’s that time of year to pickle your garden cucumbers. Here is a simple sweet pickles recipe I like. It makes about a quart of pickles. 1 cup apple cider vinegar1/8 cup salt1 cup white sugar1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric1/2 teaspoon mustard seed2 pounds cucumbers2 sweet onions Directions1. In a small saucepan at medium-high heat, combine cider vinegar, salt, sugar, tumeric and mustard seed. Bring to a boil and let cook for 5 more minutes.2. Meanwhile, slice cucumbers and onion. Loosely pack the vegetables in a 1-quart canning jar or other similarly sized container. Pour hot liquid over the veg-etables in the container. Refrigerate for 24 hours and enjoy! Keep refrigerated.
