The 73rd Annual Daytona Bike Week kicks off the season with lots of great rides, bike shows, vendors, racing and just about anything you can imagine. We are proud to present the Ladies Ride In Bike Show presented by Southern Biker Magazine and sponsored by the World Famous Bruce Rossmeyer's Destination Daytona. We want to focus on the quickly growing, often under-represented female bikers and invite them to ride their bikes into

the show at the Pavilion at Destination Daytona. There is no telling what all types of beautiful motorcycles and ladies will grace the stage. Awards will be presented at 3pm on Thursday, March 13, so make plans to come down and cheer them on. We will have chair massages for everyone too. Donations from the bike show entry will benefi t the MDA.

And it’s obvious that Polaris intends to aim their sites solely at Harley-Davidson and their touring models; they’ve even said so.

From starting it up to driving it through the curves and then hitting the straight aways at legal speed (wink), it has all the power and performance you look for and then some. The handling was phenomenal and the aerodynamics of this motorcycle was obviously well thought out in the R&D department. The suspension was not a second thought either. It handled with surprising nimbleness and still had aggressive grip in the curves that you wouldn’t expect with a 825 pound motorcycle.

When I parked it at a couple of my local watering holes, everyone came out to look at it and sit on it. They too were impressed with the new Indian edition. Many were fi nding a

dealership to test ride one that day.The Chieftain’s front fairing with

a push button power-adjustable windshield houses many great features. It has extensive digital instrumentation including a tire pressure monitoring system (that’s handy for those of us that may forget to check it). The digital, 100 watt audio system is crisp, clear and loud when you need it and also Bluetooth ready when you want to play your own music from your smartphone. It also has keyless ignition, cruise control and a digital readout for every gauge you need.

The aluminum frame has an integrated airbox and wherever there could be chrome, Indian put chrome so that the new Chieftain would have top of the line, shiny chrome for all to

My buddy Smokin’ Joe Ball stopped by a Harley-Davidson

dealership just to visit as he always does. He owns two other Harleys (‘13 CVO Road Glide and ‘13 CVO Ultra Limited). As he walked through the doors, the dealership had just put out the new 2014 CVO Ultra Limited. Within an hour, it was his. I couldn’t believe he would do this, so I thought I’d do some digging and fi nd out what caught his attention so quick and what made him pull the trigger.

The big thing on this model of course was the Project Rushmore that Harley-Davidson calls it “Twin Cooling”. There is no big radiator protruding out of the frame like you would think. The twin radiators are cleverly hidden inside the lower leg fairing so you can’t tell there is a liquid-cooling system at all. The hoses attached to each cylinder head are also hidden to keep that clean Harley look. The result is a cool running motorcycle on the hot-hot days and better

performance out of the engine with cooler heads. The idea is similar to the BMW R1200GS with its “Precision Cooling” system in their 2013 R1200GS model. Rather than go the full liquid-cooled route with a big radiator sitting ahead of the engine, Harley chose to incorporate liquid-cooled cylinder heads into their twin-cooled mills to keep their iconic look. What does this really mean besides a cooler ride? It means fi ve to seven percent more power from the twin-cooled engines. The high output twin cam engine provides 110 cubic inches of power, a low cruising rpm, more low end torque, and more passing power with a smooth shifting 6-speed cruise drive transmission.

The next big change I noticed was the dash. Harley replaced the old style audio system with a brand new BOOM™ Box 6.5 infotainment system with its 6.5-inch full color touch screen. The screen is pressure sensitive and the system’s navigation, music, and audio systems have 25% more volume and only 1% distortion and can be operated by hand or now by voice control. This was a really cool and useful feature for the rider that really covers the miles on their motorcycle like Smokin’ Joe.

H a r l e y -D a v i d s o n a d d e d some new features and c h a n g e d some for the better. The Harley front fairing has been redesigned to reduce head buffeting by 20%. It also features the new Refl ex Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with dynamically, electronically linked brakes for optimum stopping in all conditions. New fl oating open brake rotors enable better feel and shorter stopping distances. The stock seat is larger and has more room for the passenger with arm rests along

with being heated. The newly redesigned saddlebags now open with a one-touch latch. I was really impressed with this feature, too.

“The bike handles great and a noticeable difference from the 2013 CVO Ultra. There were major changes to the front end of the bike including larger fork tubes and the air vent that probably contributes to the better handling. Another contributing factor could be the redesigned saddlebag fi ller insert support brackets. Instead of the old stamped metal supports the 2014 touring model have billet supports making the back of the bike more solid”, said Joe Ball.

I understand now why Joe saw this motorcycle, rode it and bought it. He rides 30-40,000 miles a year and he’s an aggressive rider. This bike will put him through his passes, with more comfort, style and performance than he has ever had.

Loosing close friends can be terrible... loosing a spouse can be devasating. I don’t begin to know how that feels. If I lost

Kristin, I just don’t know what I would do or how I would survive. Our friend Don Porter is going through that now. His wife Sherry passed away just before her birthday. Family and friends are helping

Don through this time and God only knows the pain Don carries. But he will see her again, God promises that.

Sherry was an avid rider and a champion of charity events, especially childrens’ charities and events. Most of all, she was a loving wife, terrifi c mother and even better grandmother.

Kristin and I pray for you Don often and for the hurt and pain to heal as much as possible.

Some roads of central Florida

were recently taken over by a different kind of Poker Run where some of the

participants sported brightly colored spandex rather than leather. Motorcycle & bicycle riders went from biker bar to biker bar collecting cards for their hands. The bicyclists sped their machines down the road practically in complete silence. Such machines were made of carbon fi ber and weighed approximately 15-17 pounds except for one “big bike” that pushed a hefty 33 pounds with knobby tires. It was a sight to behold when the two biker cultures met up for a common cause: to help a local woman with her medical bills as she suffers from cancer.

To avoid any issues of sharing the road, the motorcycle and bicycle groups had a staggered start and rode different distances. By the time the cyclists were done, most of the motorcyclists were still visiting each bar. While this made the event very safe it did not lend many cool

The benefi ciary of the ride, Kendra Baum, is a 51 year old with a form of cancer that has exhausted the family’s bank account. She was at the run from beginning to end (cyclists started at 8:30 and bikers at 11am), through the poker hand picking, BBQ lunch, live band and raffl e. As I spoke with her at lunch, she was very grateful for those who showed up to help her family out. With a soft voice she explained that “Today is a good day, but I’ve had many bad ones that are behind me and we don’t know what lies ahead. But the Lord is giving me lots of people like you all to help us out.” While she is doing better at the moment, the medical bills continue to pour in. 2014 marks the 40th Anniversary of Supercross in America and the

opening round set the stage for the most competitive season ever. Defending series champion Ryan Villopoto is trying to chase his 4th consecutive title, a feat only accomplished by 7 time champion Jeremy McGrath.

Round 1 in Anaheim, California is always a race with a lot of pressure and hype for the riders. You can’t win the championship in the first round but you can definitely lose it. Ryan Villopoto grabbed the holeshot and set a blistering pace up front. Pushing the edge comes at a price however, as the Kawasaki rider washed his front wheel out and hit the dirt on lap 9. German superstar Ken Roczen on his Red Bull KTM inherited the lead and outlasted charges from veterans Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey. The biggest challenge came from James Stewart on lap 15 as the crowed roared when Stewart went down hard in the whoop section going for the pass. KTM finished 1-2 on the podium with Chad Reed on his privateer Kawasaki rounded out the top 3.

One week is all the riders have to work on issues or fine tune their program in between races. When round 2 of the series came to Phoenix, Ryan Villopoto proved why he has the #1 plate on his bike . Villopoto started just inside the top 10 and methodically picked off every rider

in route to winning his 35th main event. The standout performance of the night was JGR Toyota Yamaha’s Justin Brayton, who led over half of the main event. Brayton shadowed Villopoto all the way to the checker flag, even showing a wheel after the whoop section going for a last lap pass. Villopoto finally captured a win at Chase Field in Phoenix, a venue that always eluded him.

The riders returned back to Anaheim for round 3 and the main event was nothing short of spectacular. 40 years of Supercross and this race was one for the ages. And age had nothing to do with Chad Reed and the fire that was lit under him. The 31 year old from Australia proved he was for real in 2014. The Chad Reed of old emerged and took the win after starting just outside the top 5 and climbing his way to the front. Villopoto and Stewart made contact multiple times with Villopoto going down while trying to run it in on the

Suzuki rider too aggressively. Reed saw the opportunity on the table and took it, passing Roczen and Stewart and setting the fastest lap time of the main event on lap 18. This marked Chad Reed’s 41st win and one of the most memorable of his career. Reed received no support from the factories decided to spend millions of his own dollars in starting his own team. The rider that many people wrote off proved everyone wrong with his amazing performance.

Only 5 points separate the top 5 after 3 rounds with 3 different winners. The field is stacked with talent and all the riders are more determined than ever to leave their mark in 40th running of AMA Supercross.

My comrade had the bloody masterpiece. It is a Bloody Mary in a mason jar with a brussel sprout, celery, pearl onion, mushroom, cherry tomato, lemon, pickle spear, shrimp, sausage stick, cheese cube, olive, green onion, asparagus and a bacon cheeseburger slider. All this is held together by toothpicks so you have to eat your way to the drink.

Four dozen eggs (48 eggs)Four cups of vinegarone Onion (sliced, optional)six to eight jalapeno peppers (medium-sized)two tablespoons of red pepper fl akesthree hot peppers (your choice)fi ve cloves of garlictwo tablespoons pickling spice4 dashes Tabasco sauce4 tablespoons of black peppercorns

Hard boil your eggs as you normally would. Allow the eggs to cool then peel each one. Set the shelled, hard boiled eggs aside. They’ll come in play shortly.

Place all other ingredients together in a saucepan and allow it to come to boil roughly 15 minutes of boiling time will be necessary to achieve the right mixture and consistency. Set the brine aside and allow it to cool to slightly warm.

Place the eggs into your mason jar. Once all of the eggs are packed into the jar shake it lightly to ensure there is some space between the eggs for the spicy brine to penetrate. Poor your brine over the eggs. The brine is unlikely to cover all of the eggs so fi ll the rest of the jar with hot water until the eggs are fully submerged in the liquid. Cover the jar tightly and give it a gentle shake to ensure the brine is evenly dispersed.

Place the jar in the refrigerator and allow it to pickle for two weeks. The process of the eggs curing in the brine will take two weeks; however they can be eaten earlier. The longer they are allowed to set the more pickled they will taste as the brine will have time to penetrate more deeply into the eggs.

There are some truths in life, and one is that motorcycle enthusiasts are a social bunch. Bikers love riding together, partying together and nowhere is this more pronounced than at motorcycle rallies. Some rallies like Sturgis and Daytona have become legendary and taken on international fame. However, their fame has come at a price. Consequently, they have popped onto the radar screens of certain law enforcement agencies across the country.

An interesting event has happened in the south over the last few years. State police in Georgia received a grant from the federal government to conduct motorcycle-only roadblocks on the major highways heading to Florida. This obviously affects bikers all over the south heading to large events, as in the past, the roadblocks happened during the first week of March which (surprise, surprise!) corresponded with the Daytona bike week. The inspectors were apparently searching motorcycles and riders for mandatory safety and non-safety equipment as well as stolen VIN numbers. The typical motorist passing through one of the checkpoints would have observed a scene that looked like something from a major crime bust: a dozen Georgia State Patrol cars, a couple county sheriff’s deputy vehicles, one official vehicle from the Department of Transportation, a helicopter, and a mobile video/photographic unit that recorded each and every biker passing through the checkpoint.

While the outrage among bikers is understandable, it did not get to the heart of the issue behind law enforcement’s flexing of its muscles: were the roadblocks constitutionally permissible? Does a biker passing through this roadblock have to consent to the search and, if he or she ends up in legal trouble from the stop, can the biker beat the charge because of a bad stop? The question lies as to whether a stop falls under a citizen’s fourth amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure.

Most states, utilize a five part test to determine a roadblock’s reasonability. Out of those five standards, at least two are clearly outside the scope of what a layman biker should consider when thinking about the reasonability of the stop. These two factors are best evaluated by attorneys and the information they obtain through discovery from the prosecution. However, focusing on the three remaining factors may be invaluable because they may greatly help the biker in the event criminal action is taken against him or her.

The first layman’s factor to think about is whether or not the delay at the roadblock is minimal. The second layman’s factor bikers should consider is whether the roadblock operation is well-marked as a police operation. The factors which will determine if it is well marked may include if signs, roadway cones, and officers wearing displayed vests, police cars with flashing lights and/or if large signs stating a checkpoint is ahead are visibly placed.

The final factor a biker should pay attention to is if all motorcyclists who are utilizing a specific roadway are stopped at the roadblock. For the roadblock to be valid, each and every motorcyclist on a given thoroughfare should be stopped at a motorcycle checkpoint.

To conclude, bikers should be aware that motorcycle-only roadblocks are permissible. If a biker is on a highway where one is established, he or she cannot simply drive past it thinking that it is unconstitutional. However, the motorcyclist should pay attention to important details about the roadblock - was it well-marked, or did it pop up out of nowhere? How long did the biker get delayed at the roadblock? How long did officers take to conduct their safety search of the individual biker? Making mental notes of these important details will not likely get you out of trouble at the roadblock itself, but they may greatly help your defense in the event some criminal sanction is taken against you for the results of that roadblock search.

Finally, remember that if the search at the roadblock begins to go horribly bad for whatever reason, you have other constitutional rights you can invoke. Remember, always be polite, but also be firm. You are allowed to ask questions about what is going on and whether you are being detained. If an officer seeks to search your person or the bags on your motorcycle, NEVER consent to the search. If the officer says you are being detained, find out why and make sure the officer cites the specific charge. At that point you have the right to remain silent and request an attorney, and you should probably exercise them. You have rights when confronted by law enforcement. Make sure you use them.
