7th Grade News
In Language Arts, we are wrapping up our science fic-
tion unit and starting to compare themes across multi-
ple texts. Authors have many different tools at their
disposal when crafting a story, and the tools they
choose to use impact the reader.
Math 7 - Solving inequalities using addition/subtraction and multiplication/division Math 7/8 - Understanding angles, lines, and trans-versals (next week) (March) Exterior and interi-or angels of a triangle.
In Science, we are continuing Unit 3 on Forces and
Motion and working on our Rube Goldberg Machines.
We will focus on kinetic and potential energy in the
upcoming weeks and observe energy transfers occur-
ring within our machines.
Our Social Studies students are exploring the Middle
East to find patterns of culture that influence that re-
gion today. The Quarterly Test at the end of March will
be a major writing assignment using selected primary
source documents.

Due to many parents on the board moving up to the high school with their children, the PTA has sev-eral positions that will be open for the 2018-19 school year.
These positions include:
Vice President Cultural Arts
Grants Communications Hospitality Assistant Chair
Ways N Means Assistant Chair
If interested, please email Jessica King, [email protected]. Anyone interested must be a cur-rent SMS PTA member, or become a current member, if they are family of an incoming 6th grader.
*PBIS is always looking for donations for items to "sell" in the school store. Students use their bull-dog bucks to purchase these items which can include things like: lead refills for mechanical pencils, lanyards, pens, pencils, etc.
*Next PTA Meeting will be Thursday, April 5 @ 6:30pm in the Media Center
Thank you!

From The Desk Of The School Nurse:
VACCINE REQUIREMENT FOR 7th Grade
The Maryland State Department of Health issued immunization re-quirements for students entering 7th grade. The required vaccines are MCV4 for meningitis and Tdap for tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis/whooping cough. These immunizations are also required for any 8th or 9th grade student new to the county for the school year 2018-19. Written verification that your child received both im-munizations must be provided to the school nurse before the first day of school begins in the fall. Without the immunizations, your child may be excluded from attending classes next year. If you have any questions about these immunizations please speak with your child’s health care provider. Please care for this before the end of this school year if possi-ble.

Thoughts to Ponder
I did my undergraduate work at University of British Columbia; earn-ing a Bachelor of Science, major Bio-chemistry. I earned a Second Bacca-laureate: from Acadia University; with a Bachelor of Education, major Secondary Science and English Lan-guage Arts.
I've got a 10 month old son at home who amazes me and makes me laugh every single day. He loves to read, and is very vain (he loves to look at himself in videos and the mirror). The rest of my family is still in Canada, so I spend as much of my time off there as possible.
LET ME INTRODUCE YOU

In middle school I was CHATTY! (I was that kid that gets sent out of class for talking CONSTANTLY) I enjoyed music. I was part of a community choir that travelled all over the world - I sang in West-minster Abbey in 8th Grade.
Chris Hadfield is my hero, and I would give anything to meet Julie Andrews!
Southern Middle School was the very first school that I worked at when I ar-rived in the United States. On my first day as a substitute, I was hired for a long term position, and the rest is history. I love the close-knit community of South County, and I could not have asked for a better group of colleagues.
I have loved my time at SMS.
SMS is very lucky to have
Ms. Dixon!!!

For the Community
Ambassador Coffee Chat: Active Shooter Conversation
A representative from Anne Arundel County Police will lead a
conversation for community members about Active Shooter situations
and how to keep yourself and your organization safe.
Please come to join in the discussion about this timely topic of
community concern and learn from both the Police and our neighbors
about how we can safeguard our communities.
