School Objective 2018-2019The faculty and staff of Southwest will foster students’ ELA and Math growth building-wide across the curriculum, with special emphasis on our Special Education and ELL population. This will be done by using formative and summative assessments to help us drive instruction.

Southwest S.I.T. Action Plan 2018-2019

This plan also satisfies the Title I School-wide Planning requirements as specified in the ESSA Act. It includes the following elements:Required Components of the Title I School-wide Program (SWP) Plan:All Title I School-wide Program (SWP) schools are required to prepare an annual school improvement plan that includes the following components:

Comprehensive Needs Assessment: • I- Ready: teachers use various reports to target skills that need reteaching. Students

self-reflect and set goals for future growth. Parent reports are shared with parents during conferences.• Teachers will continue to monitor CAM results and grade levels will develop strategies to increase students’

performance in targeted areas. • Students will develop confidence in identifying and using curriculum terminology. Posted objectives for student

internalization of instructional goals as well as a growth mindset and success criteria. Use of student goal-setting in math using standards, Continuum of Literacy, and findings from F + P.

• Student set personal F+P benchmark goals. Student goals are cross circular and posted daily within the classroom. • Student self-reflection will regularly occur to guide instruction. Students will self-reflect on a few targeted questions to

learn the skill.• Building wide growth goals established using i-Ready diagnostic collaborative building teams look at data and targeted

areas for midyear evaluations

School-Wide reform strategies. • Southwest has 21 classroom teachers that collaborate with 8 ENL teachers to present an integrated co-teaching model

as per NYS mandate.• Good Habits, Great Readers reading series is used to teach reading and writing. Teachers use the shared reading,

guided reading, and writing components of the series to meet the instructional needs of all students. In addition, Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) is used to support AIS students showing the most growth potential as well as being used for students as a response to intervention. Southwest also has 6 ELA Teacher Assistant to work with 39 classes this year.

• Teachers will be part of ongoing data meetings as a team regarding iReady diagnostics. They will look at formative and summative assessments and how to use these assessments to guide instruction.

• Teachers will teach students to be goal-oriented through having a growth mindset, take risks in their learning and how to self-assess their learning. They will do this through asking D.O.K effective questioning techniques, stem and prompts, modeling, rubrics, bar graphs to chart I Ready data progress etc.

• Teachers will utilize benchmark assessment to determine a student’s area of strength and weakness in reading• Based upon the assessment, students will be placed into reading groups for both instructional and independent reading.• Teachers will implement lessons and activities that support the Common Core Standards and Promote student learning.

Such skills will include vocabulary development, comprehension strategies, finding and collecting evidence from various texts, including both fiction and non-fiction and citing evidence from a given text to support a written response for both short answer and extended response questions.

• Students will be formally assessed in the beginning of the school year and again at the end of the school year.• Informal assessments and running records will be administered throughout the year by the classroom teacher. • At the end of the year, we will use benchmark assessments results to determine if students showed growth.• Teachers will use

o Balanced literacy approach to teach reading and writing including shared reading lessons, guided reading/writing groups, readers/writers groups, readers/writers response journals, independent reading/writing time. Reader’s and writer’s workshop teacher will follow the Reading and Writing Curriculum calendar that outline the reading and writing lessons each month. Good Habits Great Readers in grades K-5 with professional development for teachers on an as needed basis. Implementation of programs to encourage behaviors of a Great Habits School.

Instruction by highly qualified teachers: CSEA requires that all teachers of core academic subjects (and instructional paraprofessionals) are “highly qualified.”

• Signed attestation form submitted to Human Resources Dept. in November, 2018.• All Southwest teachers meet the mandated requirements for “highly qualified” teachers.

• Strategies to Attract High Quality Highly Qualified Teachers to High Need Schools: The Brentwood School district collaborates with local teacher training institutions (i.e. Molloy College, St. Joseph’s College, and Cortland College) to place student teacher observers and full-time student teachers in our schools. Perspective teachers will work in collaboration with their cooperating classroom teacher and college supervisor to help foster a positive learning environment. They will create and implement curriculum based lessons and projects and establish connections with the community thought school-community based activities. Meetings are held with their college supervisors and their cooperating teachers to discuss how the student teacher is performing.

• Additionally, permanent substitutes are assigned to our schools by the Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Instruction. These permanent substitutes are evaluated using the format negotiated by the Brentwood Teachers’ Association and the District’s Administration. They are formally evaluated during the school year. They are evaluated

Page 5: Southwest SIT/Title I Action Plan...• PTA Texas Roadhouse Fundraiser TBD • PTA Board & Teacher Meeting TBD • Winter Concert TBD • PTA Board & Teacher Meeting TBD • PTA Dine

on the implementation of district approved programs as they are included in all professional development. Additionally, their attendance, participation in extra-curricular building level activities and rapport with the students, parents and staff are taken into account when providing an overall evaluation. Recommendations for continuation in current placement or in probationary teaching positions, if available, are made on the basis of their evaluations.

High-quality and ongoing professional development. Professional development will focus on formative and summative assessment data and interpreting data to improve instruction. District initiatives training is ongoing during the 2018-19 school year and include:

• Monthly Grade level meetings • I Ready training 10/9-10/8(k-5)• Elevate Science training 10/16-10/17(K-3), 11/9(3rd-5th)• Special education IEP training on goals 10/12• Writing planning 10/1-10/2 K-3rd

• RTI weekly meetings • Monthly faculty meetings • RTI Behavior Team in place• NYSAA training 10/29/18• Ongoing grade level planning for writing units •

Strategies to increase parental involvement and increase importance of students giving back: Teachers will strengthen the home-school communication using the following strategies:

• This school year the Southwest School Improvement Team would like parents in our community to help contribute to the academic success of their children, our students. We would like to form a collaborative relationship with parents and students including but not limited to, communication, volunteering, collective decision making within the school community. We hope to accomplish these goal through school events and community outreach.

• Monthly Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings before every PTA meeting • School-wide Student of the Month;11/28, 2/27,5/8 - Students will be honored within the categories of character

education, curriculum, and special areas. Star reporters will highlight exemplar work, grade curriculum highlights, and

Plans for assisting preschool students in the successful transition from early childhood programs to local elementary schools. Southwest host Kindergarten Orientation during the month of May for parents and children entering kindergarten the following

September. Parents can register their child at the school directly and have an opportunity to take a tour of the school. Kindergarten teachers will do a presentation after Pre-K graduation. Kindergarten teachers will also invite Pre-K classes to their room for visits and buddies throughout the end of the school year.

Measures to include teachers in decisions regarding the use of academic assessments. In addition to state assessment results, teachers access current and ongoing assessment data (i.e., Interim Assessments, formative assessments, F & P benchmarking, IReady, CAM, Performance Assessments,) Teachers will use assessment results by forming groups according to levels, using teacher’s assistants and student teachers to work with small groups and/or pull-out services to address needs of the students. Teachers will have common planning time to review and discuss assessment and Common Core practices within their grade level. Pertinent information will be placed in the faculty shared folder for the entire staff. Websites such as Engage NY and the New York State Education Department website will be available to all teacher.

Integrated Service Delivery (ISD) for ENL instruction is provided daily for 90 minutes via three literacy groups based on ability and English language needs for every grade level utilizing ENL teacher, classroom teacher and teacher assistant.

Activities to ensure that students who experience difficulty attaining proficiency receive effective and timely additional assistance. Students who are performing below grade level standards are identified through NYS assessments, Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessments, I- Ready and teacher-student conferring during small group instruction. Our AIS team which includes, classroom teachers, ENL teachers, reading and math consultants and teacher assistants, meets with students daily either one-on-one or in small groups to ensure that we are meeting the needs of those students. Differentiated and modified instruction is being provided. Some targeted students, based on teacher recommendation are also coming in the morning to receive enrichment classes in areas of weaknesses. We educate the whole child so in addition to academic support we utilize our guidance counselor, speech teachers, occupational therapist, physical therapists, and psychologist. to ensure that other issues that may interfere with learning are addressed. Students are serviced in small flexible groups both in class and out of class. Southwest

Southwest School-wide Reform Strategies (2018-2019)This year, Southwest elementary will focus on three academic goals in Math, ELA and ENL. Our School Improvement team has looked over last school year’s data, including ELA, Math, and NYSESLAT results. As a team, we decided the main weakness is the writing components of both ELA and Math. We also need to focus on last year’s NYSELAT results. Our goals will continue to focus on retelling and going back in to a text or fact based document to find information.

As per Southwest’s mission statement, the students will achieve success through the use of iReady. We will channel our efforts through Growth Mindset to help our students become productive members of society.

ELA: • Teachers will develop progress monitoring plans to promote at least a one year’s growth using

the Continuum of Literacy.• All teachers grade 1-5 will use iReady data to increase their students in one level within the

program.
