On November 21 st , at 6:30 p.m. members of the Aldrich Astronomical Society will present a family friendly PowerPoint presentation on how to use the library’s telescope using a technique called star hopping. Spacey door prizes will be offered for children, along with outside viewing on two telescopes for all, weather permitting.

Rory Raven Mentalist and Mind Bender to

Appear at Southwick Public Library

Mr. Rory Raven will be at the Southwick Public Library on

Wednesday, November 8th at 7 p.m. Rory is a mentalist with years of

experience reading minds and astonishing audiences. Minds are read,

spoons are bent, and volunteers test their own "powers”. Rory involves

the audience in a highly unusual – and unusually entertaining –

experience. This program is funded by the Friends of the Southwick

Public Library. The Friends will present the library with a gift at the

beginning of the program.

The Southwick Public Library received a grant from Shurtleff

Children’s Services, Inc. to purchase a telescope through the Aldrich

Astronomical Society Library Telescope Program. On November 21st,

at 6:30 p.m. members of the Aldrich Astronomical Society will present

Claiming Noah topic of November Book Discussion

Amanda Ortlepp’s book Claiming Noah will be the subject of the

November 1st Adult Book Discussion Group in the library’s

Community Room at 1:30 p.m. This thriller deals with IVF, adoption,

kidnapping and love.

At the end of the discussion, copies of Lilac Girls: a novel by

Martha Hall Kelly will be available for purchase for the December

discussion and afterwards, at the library Circulation Desk for those

that will be attending the December meeting. The group will meet on

December 6th at 1:30 p.m. Lilac Girls is "Inspired by the life of a real

World War II heroine, this powerful debut novel reveals an incredible

story of love, redemption, and terrible secrets that were hidden for

decades.”—publisher.

One on One Training

The library is offering One-on-One training on Tuesdays. There will

be two times to select from. You may either sign-up for a session from

4-4:30 or from 4:30-5. Librarian, Jackie Hart, will offer instruction on

downloading apps, removing apps, or downloading eBooks on smart

phones, E-readers, and tablets. Reference Librarian, Paul McKenna,

will offer basic computer instruction. He will show you how to set-up

an email account, get on the internet, how to use a mouse, etc. You

must sign-up in advance at the Reference Desk. This month’s

• November 14th & Nov. 28th- Basic Computer/Email Instruction

Cookbook Club Cookie & Candy Exchange

The library’s Cookbook Club will not be meeting in November. Due to the

holiday season, we will meet in December on Tuesday, December 5th at 6:30

p.m. with a slightly different format. This is a busy time of year with parties

and visiting. Attendees will be asked to make 4 dozen of their favorite cookie

or candy recipe for a cookie exchange, along with a copy of their recipe and a

container to take treats home with them. Now, when company arrives, you will

have some sweets on hand to share. Please sign-up at the Reference Desk.

Cookbook Club will resume its regular format on Tuesday, January 23rd.

Application for Books on the Go Service The Southwick Public Library offers a home delivery service for

those who are unable to visit the library because of a short-term

disability lasting 3 weeks or more, or because of a permanent disability.

Books, books on CDs and music CDs owned by the Southwick Public

Library are delivered and picked-up by our volunteer drivers.

Applications are available at the library’s Reference Desk or you may

call 569-1221 ext. 3 and an application will be mailed to you.

Adult Color, Chat and Cookies

As the year 2017 is winding down, things can become even more

stressful. Join us on November 20th starting at 6:30 p.m. for Adult Color,

Chat and Cookies. All materials are supplied. You may drop-in

anytime from 6:30 p.m. until we close at 8 p.m. We will have coffee,

tea, and cookies available for you. There is no need to register for this

program.

Giving Tree

The Southwick Public Library will be erecting a Giving Tree after

Thanksgiving. Thanks to a donation, the library has a tree that we will

decorate with donated new mittens, gloves, scarves and hats. You may

purchase, knit or crochet the items. The donated hats, scarves, mittens

and gloves will be picked-up by the Department of Families &

Children and will be distributed in our area to help keep people warm

this winter.

Inclement Weather Policy

If the Southwick Public Library needs to close or delay its opening due

to inclement weather, the announcement will be sent to local television

channels CBS, ABC, FOX & NBC. Please note, the library’s closing

is separate from the decision to delay or close schools.

Teen Events

Zombie Survival Course for Teens

Love The Walking Dead? Ever think of what it would be like at the start of

the Zombie Apocalypse? Would you have the skills to survive? Matthew

Gabriel from Animal World Experience will be here on Wednesday,

November 8th from 3 – 5pm to teach real life survival skills (like basic first

aid, designing an emergency bag, knots and lashings, and emergency shelter

construction) all against the backdrop of the Zombie Apocalypse. Weather

permitting, program will be held outside the library. Teens in attendance will

also get to shoot a homemade crossbow! Please call 413-569-1221 x.3 or

stop by the Library to register as space will be limited. This program made

possible by a generous grant from Shurtleff Children’s Services.

Virtual Reality with BIG (for ages 10+)

The Brookline Interactive Group (BIG) is bringing Virtual Reality to the

Southwick Library on Wednesday, November 15th from 3 – 7pm with the

HTC Vive! See scenic vistas, practice your archery skills, mini-golf on a

crazy course, and more all from the inside of the library. If you haven't used

VR yet, you owe it to yourself to witness the future of technology.

Recommended for ages 10+, and we highly suggest the whole family comes

to watch each other enter into a new world! Any questions? Please contact

Teen Advisory Board (SPLAT)

The Teen Advisory Board has been renamed SPLAT (Southwick Public

Library Advisory Team) and will be meeting on Thursday, November 2nd

from 2:30-3:30pm. At SPLAT we will brainstorm events to put on at the

library for teens, create themed book displays, and discuss ways to make the

library better for you! SPLAT is a great activity you can add to your resume

or college application! For further information, please contact the reference

Coloring and Cookies for Teens

Grades 7-12 can come in on November 28th from 2:30-3:30 to color, chat,

and have some cookies! We will have all the coloring sheets, gel pens, and

colored pencils that you’ll need to take part in this relaxing activity. For

Children’s Room News

Tuesday Storytime is Fun for 2-5 Year Olds!

Sign up in the Children’s Room for November Story time fun. Meet in the

Children’s Room on November 7, 21, & 28 at 10:30 a.m.to hear about Pete

the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, and good manners. Sing a song, make

a craft and more. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Story Yoga is Back

Southwick Public Library will host Story Yoga on Tuesday, November 14

at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room. Children ages 2-5 accompanied by a

parent or caregiver will learn the benefits of yoga through a story, some yoga

poses and a simple craft. Please register in the Children’s Room or call us at

413-569-1221x4 to participate in this event. Story Yoga is funded by

Pathways for Parents.

Saturday Storytime in November

On Saturday, November 18th at 11a.m. children and their

parents/caregivers are invited to come to the Children’s Room to hear stories

about Thanksgiving and to make a craft for the holiday. Registration for this

program is not necessary.

Thanksgiving Drop-in-Craft

Children of all ages are invited to come to the Children’s Room to make a

Thanksgiving Drop-in-Craft. Materials will be available for three days

during regular library hours beginning Monday, November 20th through

Wednesday, November 22nd.

Lego Club Fun

We have LEGOS! Build with us and show your great LEGO building

skills at Southwick Public Library’s LEGO Club. Kindergarten through

grade 2 will meet on Wednesday November 1 at 3:30 p.m. Kids in grades 3-6

will meet on Thursday November 9 at 3:00 p.m. Both groups will meet in

the Community Room. Bring a friend to work together or build by yourself.
