THE GREEN RIVER RENDEZVOUS

Out in the Far West where three great river systemsfind their source, lies the Land of the Rendezvous. In the early days these streams and the surroundingmountains abounded in valuable fur bearing animals. The large British fur companies had foundthis area at the turn of the 19th Century, and in ashort while enterprising Americans seeking furscame into conflict with the British interests in theWest.

These trappers and adventurers were hardlyinto the Wilderness whenchurchmen and missionaries were with him carrying the word of Godand the American flaginto a land that was stillto be acquired by theUnited States. SubletteCounty at this time wasthe extreme southeastcorner of the Oregon Territory. Here the mightyGreen River, queen of all the beaver waters, was aMecca for trappers and Indians.

A short survey of the fur trade in the Rocky Mountains reveals that trappers had covered the Westfrom what is now Mexico to Canada and from theMississippi to the Pacific in a short period of 16years. Beginning with Colter, in 1807, Hoback,Reznor, Robinson, Hunt, Lewis and Clark, andRobert Stuart, followed by William Ashley (whooriginated the Rendezvous), brought together whatcan be considered the greatest group of continentalexplorers ever to assemble in any one place. Suchmen such as Smith, Bridger, Carson, Meeks,Prevost, Bonneville, Fontenelle, Campbell, Fitzpatrick, Fraeb, Gervais, and many other too numerous to mention.

Intermingling with these were the missionaries suchas Lee, Parker, Spaulding, Whitman and DeSmet. From the far reaches of the wild country, trappersand Indians congregated at Rendezvous on thebanks of the Green River to trade their catches ofthe past winter season for supplies, and to discusstheir findings and wanderings. Pausing at this spotin 1836, were Mrs. Whitman and Mrs. Spaulding

who crossed thecontinent with theirhusbands to establish a mission inOregon. They werethe first whitewomen to blaze theway for the thousands to followtheir brave example.

The Rendezvousassemblage num

bered in the thousands. Six of these great gatherings were held in Sublette County. They occurredinthe years: 1832, 1835, 1836, 1837, 1839, and1840. No official representative of any governmentis known to have taken part in these earliest explorations. It was the fur industry, the trapper, and themissionary that opened the gates of the west. Theirhardship have never been surpassed and their courage and fortitude seldom equaled.

It is the aim of the Green River Rendezvous PageantAssociation to perpetuate this important period ofAmerican history so vital to the development of theWest by reenacting annually in pageant form somehistorical incidents from that distant day.

To all those who made their Rendezvous in SubletteCounty, we of today gather to honor them by commemorating those occasions of over one hundredyears ago. Tread gently, for you walk upon hallowed ground.
