SESSION ON INNOVATION IN DIDACTIC 2018

Fighting high levels of unemployment - particularly among young people - is one of the most urgent

tasks for European governments. Too many young people leave school prematurely

running a high risk of being unemployed and socially marginalised.

The same risk threatens many adults with low skills. Technologies are changing the way in which society operates, and there is a need to ensure the best use is made of them. EU businesses need to

become more competitive through talent and innovation.


Under Key Action 2, Strategic Partnerships in the area of language teaching and learning will be

encouraged. Innovation and good practices aiming to promote language skills can include for example teaching

and assessment methods, development of pedagogical material, research, computer assisted

language learning and entrepreneurial ventures using foreign languages.


KEY ACTION 2 – COOPERATION FOR INNOVATION AND THE EXCHANGE OF GOOD

PRACTICES This Key Action supports:

§ Transnational Strategic Partnerships aimed to develop initiatives addressing one or more fields of

education training and youth and promote innovation, exchange of experience and know-

how between different types of organisations involved in education, training and youth or in other

relevant fields.


§ Knowledge Alliances between higher education institutions and enterprises which aim to foster

innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity, employability, knowledge exchange and/or

multidisciplinary teaching and learning;


JEAN MONNET ACTIVITIES

Projects for innovation and cross-fertilisation and spread of EU content aimed to promote

discussion, reflection on EU issues and to enhance knowledge about the EU and its processes;


Open education and innovative practices in a digital era:

priority will be given to actions that promote innovative methods and pedagogies, as well as

participatory modes of governance, where appropriate.


Another priority will be updating and developing digital learning materials and tools, in particular

Open Educational Resources, open textbooks, and Free and Open Source Educational Software,

as well as supporting the effective use of digital technologies and open pedagogies in education, training, youth and sport. …. fostering synergies

with research and innovation activities and promoting new technologies as drivers of

improvements in education, training, youth and sport policies and practices.

This is the question of the teachers of 21st Century

Thanks to Europe 2020 Strategy which introduced the flagship initiative “Digital

agenda” since 2014 all what is supposed to be development, growth and change seems to be related with

the key words: ICT – Digital - Web


Technologies and time

Integration of technology in the classroom has yielded amazing results among students of all ages. While educators have been given the opportunity to make their plans and lessons more engaging and

easy to create as well as teach, students are given more options outside and inside of a classroom for

gaining the necessary skills and knowledge.


Native digitals

The tech-savvy generation finds technology overall more appealing since they’ve grown up surrounded

by technology in the classroom.

Modern teachers use it for opening the new horizons in educational process.

Students are more sophisticated in their use of technology than teachers

Role of the teacher

Teachers remain central to the learning process A shift in the role of a teacher utilizing ICTs to that

of a facilitator does not obviate the need for teachers to serve as leaders in the classroom;

traditional teacher leadership skills and practices are still important (especially those related to lesson planning, preparation, and follow-up).


Lesson planning is crucial when using ICTs

Teacher lesson planning is vital when using ICTs; where little planning has occurred, research shows that student work is often unfocused and can result

in lower attainment.


Pedagogy

Introducing technology alone will not change the teaching and learning process

The existence of ICTs does not transform teacher practices in and of itself. However, ICTs can enable teachers to transform their teacher practices, given a set of enabling conditions. Teachers’ pedagogical practices and reasoning influence their uses of ICT, and the nature of teacher ICT use impacts student

achievement.


ICTs seen as tools to help teachers create more 'learner-centric' learning environments

Research consensus holds that the most effective uses of ICT are those in which the teacher, aided by ICTs, can challenge pupils’ understanding

and thinking, either through whole-class discussions and individual/small group work using ICTs. ICTs are seen as important tools to enable and support the move from traditional 'teacher-centric' teaching styles to more 'learner-centric'

methods.


ICTs can be used to support change and to support/extend existing teaching practices

Pedagogical practices of teachers using ICT can range from only small enhancements of teaching

practices using what are essentially traditional methods, to more fundamental changes in their

approach to teaching. ICTs can be used to reinforce existing pedagogical

practices as well as to change the way teachers and students interact.


Teaching with ICTs takes more time

Introducing and using ICTs to support teaching and learning is time-consuming for teachers, both as they attempt to shift pedagogical practices and strategies and when such strategies are used regularly. Simply put: Teaching with ICTs takes

more time (estimates vary on how much extra time is required to cover the same material; 10% is a

common estimate).


Subject knowledge

Teachers' subject knowledge influences how ICTs are used

The way ICT is used in lessons is influenced by teacher knowledge about their subjects, and how

ICT resources can be utilized and related to it.


Teacher content mastery and understanding of student comprehension make ICT use more

effective

The evidence shows that when teachers use their knowledge of both the subject and the

way pupils understood the subject, their use of ICT has a more direct effect on student

achievement.


Successful on-going professional development models can be divided into three phases:

1) pre-service, focusing on initial preparation on pedagogy, subject mastery, management skills and

use of various teaching tools (including ICTs); 2) in-service, including structured face-to-face and distance learning opportunities building upon pre-

service training and directly relevant to teacher needs;

3) and on-going formal and informal pedagogical and technical support, enabled by ICTs, for

teachers, targeting daily needs and challenges.
