Fundraising Effort for Playground Kicks Off GREENFIELD – The parents of Greenfield Elementary, a rural school in the Saratoga Springs District, have boldly embarked upon one of the largest recent projects of its kind that is garnering lots of attention. Its parent teacher organization, the Home School Association (HSA), is now leading a community “Feed the Dragon” campaign to be sure its children continue to have a re-cess area that is distinguishable, safe and accessible to all. The campaign features the Greenfield Elementary School dragon mascot and includes a year-long marketing campaign driven to raise money and build awareness for the project. Along with grant application writing, hundreds of sponsorship packets are being mailed to area businesses and residents. Events throughout the year will include such things as student dances, a “dragon” cookbook sale, a 5K race, in-school contests and a community gala early next year. The playground team developed a new logo, tagline “Feed the Dragon” and multiple promotional materials are being distributed throughout the region. The Greenfield Elementary HSA and Playground is a 501 (c) 3 organization. Dona-tions can be made on the organization’s website at www.greenfieldplayground.com or by calling (518) 893-7402. (A)

Tablet Computer Shopping Tips Tablets are the must-have portable computing device of the moment, making them a top holiday gift. In just a few short years, the number of people with tablets has increased dramatically.Within a year of the iPad’s introduction into the technological lexicon, 11 percent of Americans already owned one. As other tablets and upgraded versions of the iPad entered the market, tab-lets became more and more popular.A study from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism in collaboration with The Economist Group found that the majority of tablet owners (77 percent) use their tab-lets every day, using them for an average of about 90 minutes. When shopping for a tablet, there are many different features to consider.

Size - Tablets come in different sizes, weights and screen offerings. When the iPad was released, it set the standard screen size at around 10 inches, weighing slightly more than a pound. Tablets made by other manufacturers range in sizes from 12-inch screens to 5-inch screens, giving shoppers the ability to choose a device that is as mobile as they need it to be.Battery Life - Many tablet users are interested in the portability of the device. Battery operation makes that portability possible, so it makes sense that battery life is a big draw for consumers. Many tablet reviews citeAndroid products and the iPad as the best for battery life.

Flexibility - Flexibility is also important to prospective tablet buyers. Tablets that are only able to connect to the Internet via a Wi-Fi service will be much more limited in use. Many tablets now come with 3G or Wi-Fi capabilities, enabling the device to work even when you are away from home or a Wi-Fi connection.Storage - Some consumers are interested in the amount of data they can store on their tablets. Some reviewers have complained about the inability to add more storage space to the Apple iPad, forcing consumers to purchase a more expensive device just to add more storage. Android and Windows-based tablets have removable storage options and may be better buys for those who need to save a large number of apps or photos and video.

Price - As with any purchase, price is often a big component of decision-making. Therefore, the tablet that offers the most features at the most affordable price may win out.

Shipping Costs A Deciding Factor When Shopping Online

If given the choice of receiving a discount on an item purchased online or getting free shipping, most customers would select the free shipping, says a survey from the market research firm, Lab42. Information like this may guide more offerings from online retailers this holiday season. The advantages of online shopping are well documented. The 24-hour appeal continues to draw record numbers of shoppers, and the ease with which prices can be compared is attractive to bargain hunters. Also, shopping online allows customers to find items they might not be able to find at a local brick-and-mortar retailer.According to a survey from Nielsen Online, most people who shop online during the holidays do it to save time. The survey of 1,000 online shoppers found that 81 percent shop online be-cause they can shop any time of the day. In addition, 77 percent said they like to save time while 61 percent said they like to comparison shop and 56 percent said they like it because they can easily find items.Although convenience is a major factor, online shoppers prefer free shipping promotions more than any other offers. In 2007, a survey conducted for Shop.org found that free shipping is a big draw. About 61 percent of respondents said that free shipping without conditions was one of the promotions they would most like to see. The popularity of such offers has only grown. Lab42 surveyed surveyed men and women ages 25 to 44, and 96 percent of respondents said they’d be more likely to shop at a site offering a free shipping promotion. Almost as many (87 percent) said they’d be swayed by free returns. The same survey uncovered some additional insight into the mind of the online shopper.* Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of those surveyed said they shopped online more now than even two years ago, and just 5 percent said they shopped less.* Nearly 75 percent of the group said they do at least half of their shopping online, while 66 percent said they preferred to shop online rather than in a store.* About 95 percent of respondents do their shopping at home from a personal computer. Just under 4 percent use a smartphone or a tablet.* Eighty-one percent of respondents said that customer reviews played a big role in the pur-chases they made as well as those they did not make.Online shopping has many advantages. Deterrents like not being able to see or feel the quality of the item and difficulty returning items may be overlooked when retailers offer free shipping to prospective customers.

Tree Lighting Tips Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but light-ing a tree doesn’t have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t produce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, work-ing vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

3 Tips For The Perfect Holiday

Buffet (MS) -- By Carla JordanThe countdown to the holi-days is on, bringing with it the challenge of how to serve a large gathering fast and easy. Fear not! There’s a simple so-lution. Forego the traditional, full-service, sit-down meal and opt instead for a buffet-style serving. Follow these three steps and yours will be a gathering remembered with fondness by both your guests and you.1. Divide and Conquer: No more waiting in lines as Un-cle Fred peruses the spread so slowly other guests nearly faint from hunger! “Set up multiple food stations. This idea will save your sanity,” says Chef Jeff Gillis, www.CelebratingHome.com. “A few days before your gather-ing, clear most items off your kitchen countertops, table, island and dining room buf-fet and move contents to the laundry room or garage. Con-vert each area into a serving station where foods will be grouped by category. Label each area with a sticky note so that when the big day ar-rives, the stations can quickly assembled.”At each serving station, stack plates so diners needn’t traipse off to the table for one. Pre-fill glasses with ice and beverages for quick pick-up. Remember, it’s hard to carry more than a plate and glass so preset the table with napkins and flatware.2. Control the Crowd: “Don’t think twice about placing tables in multiple rooms,” adds Chef Gillis. “That’s bet-ter than crowding everyone together or asking guests to balance plates on laps while sitting on your sofa.” To seat people quickly (and without a fuss), use place cards. 3. Keep It Simple: Flowers in a vase are so last year. Instead, style up the buffet with an eye-catching “Gratitude Tree,” a sculptural bronze metal tabletop tree festooned with ribboned tree tags. Guests write what they’re thankful for on tags and after dinner’s done, take turns reading. This is a unique way to remind guests about the true meaning of the day and, because the tree arrives ready for display, it’s a real timesaver. Remember -- every minute saved adds up to extra time you can spending enjoying the day with your guests.

Out-Of-The-Box Themes For Your Holiday Party Parties are an integral part of the holiday season, when friends and family gather to celebrate and give thanks. For holiday hosts, parties are a great opportunity to make the season even more festive with an event that guests won’t soon forget. The following are just a few themes to make your holiday party as memorable as it is merry.

* Christmas sweater party: Christmas sweater parties have grown in popularity over the last decade, when revelers have tried to outdo one another with the most outrageous holiday-themed sweater. Give prizes for the most outlandish sweater and let guests know early on so they can begin their hunt for a holiday sweater that’s so ugly or outrageous you can’t help but love it.

* Christmas costume party: Costume parties aren’t just for Halloween. This holiday season, con-sider making your holiday bash a costume party, encouraging guests to dress up as their favorite characters from holiday tales like “Frosty the Snowman,” “A Christmas Carol” or any of the host of beloved holiday legends.

* Caribbean Christmas: The weather come the holiday season may be the one thing to put a damper on the festivities. To combat blue feelings from potentially inclement weather, consider a Caribbean theme for your holiday party this season. Rather than wearing sweaters and long pants, wear beach attire and give the party a touch of the Caribbean. Outfit your home in beach decor and serve food and drinks reminiscent of the Caribbean instead of more traditional holiday fare like eggnog and gingerbread cookies.

* Film festival: Holiday movies are another tradition of the season, so why not invite friends and family over for a holiday film marathon? Include classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story” and encourage guests to submit their own favorites for consideration.

* Christmas karaoke: For those who love to belt out their favorite holiday tunes, consider throw-ing a Christmas karaoke party that allows guests to perform their own renditions of their favorite Christmas carols. Purchase a home karaoke set and ask guests in advance of the party if there are any particular songs they’d like to perform.

Keep Kids Engaged And Occupied During Holiday Shopping Trips

Holiday shopping with kids can be fun. Kids enjoy giving gifts, and bringing them along on shopping excursions to offer their input can make the season that much more special for young-sters.

But bringing the little ones along on a holiday shopping trip also can be tricky, as kids can easily grow tired or bored at the mall. The following are a few tips to ensure kids and adults enjoy their holiday shopping trips together.

* Bring backup. Kids might find shopping enjoyable at the outset, but visiting store after store can drain them of that enthusiasm. To quell the inevitable boredom, bring along some backup, such as a handheld video game or a tablet or e-reader on which kids can watch a favorite film or television show.

* Choose your shopping destination wisely. All malls and retailers are certainly not equal, espe-cially when kids will be accompanying you for a day of shopping. Some malls offer attractions for kids, such as a merry-go-round or a live performance with a holiday theme. Such attractions provide some balance to a shopping trip, giving kids something to look forward to between store visits.

* Don’t be a Scrooge. An ice cream cone, some holiday cookies or a hot chocolate might not be the healthiest fare for youngsters, but such items can make a shopping excursion that much more enjoyable. When shopping with kids in tow, relax a youngster’s dietary restrictions so they can enjoy some holiday treats while shopping till they drop.

* Give kids some spending money. Kids are more likely to engage themselves in a holiday shop-ping trip if they have some spending money of their own. Offer children some money before leaving the house, and tell them the money is theirs to spend on gifts as they see fit. Kids might just enjoy looking for the perfect gift and hunting down a holiday bargain as much as Mom and Dad.

Did You Know? Interactive electronics are poised to be all the rage for the 2012 gift-giving season, as Flying Super Grover(R) and Bouncy the Happy to See Me Pup(R) figure to generate significant interest. In addition, a classic interactive electronic toy is making a comeback this year. Developed in the 1990s, Furby(R) was one of the first interactive toys for kids. Its reincarnation has more expres-sive LCD eyes, more emotions and various fur colors. It even comes with an iOS app. Children can have fun teaching their Furby to learn English and respond through play.

SPECIALSProper Etiquette For Gift-Giving

The rules of etiquette have loosened a bit from centuries past. No longer are people held accountable for the slightest mis-step, and sometimes the rule-breakers are revered. However, when it comes to holiday gifting, erring on the side of caution and following proper etiquette can make exchanging gifts go more smoothly.Being considerate when gifting helps make the holidays enjoy-able and as stress-free as possible. Some may find it unfortu-nate that so much pressure is placed on giving gifts this time of year. When exchanging, heed these suggestions.* Gift-giving is about the recipient and not you as the giver. The idea is to create that warm and fuzzy feeling for the per-son on the receiving end of the gift. Think about the person’s interests and find a gift that pertains to these interests. It may not be the easiest to find a rare book or those collectible golf clubs, but putting forth the effort will mean more to the person getting the gift.* Don’t up the ante. When exchanging gifts with a person, do not try to anticipate what he or she will spend and then go above that price. This may come off as petty and make the oth-er person feel uncomfortable. Instead, choose a price that you can readily afford and find the nicest thing within that range. If a person with whom you hadn’t anticipated exchanging gifts gives you something, simply offer thanks and don’t feel un-comfortable that you do not have something to offer in return.* Gift receipts are very thoughtful. Including a gift receipt with your gift tells the recipient that you tried to find something that he or she will enjoy, but that you’re comfortable with them returning the gift if it’s not just right. Again, this conveys your feelings for the recipient. Do not, however, use gift receipts as a “get out of jail free” pass. That means, don’t simply grab anything off the rack, attach a gift receipt and attempt to pass it off as a meaningful gift.* Do not e-mail thank you notes. If you are not able to thank a person in person for a gift, it is in better taste to send a hand-written note than to fire off a quick e-mail. While writing let-ters has become a lost art, a hand-written thank you note stands out and shows how much you appreciate the gift.* It’s unnecessary to give your boss a gift. Gifting your boss may come across like you are trying to win favor. It also may create a competition within the office. Stick to gifting col-leagues, but leave the boss out of the holiday pool.* Gift cards do not break etiquette rules. Although gift cards may seem like the easy way out of gifting, they’ve become more acceptable and popular. If you want to personalize a gift card, try using a photo or special memory that correlates to the gift card. Otherwise, package the gift card with a few inexpen-sive items to create a gift basket.* When in doubt, stick with non-intimate gifts. Perfume, co-logne, intimate apparel and similar items say that you know a person on a deeper level and are extremely personal. For friends and acquaintances, stick with safer gifts that do not give off intimate undertones.* Don’t regift. Whenever possible, graciously accept gifts and do not try to pass them off as your own to other people. If caught, you will be more embarrassed than if you had not given a gift at all.Following a few guidelines on gift-giving etiquette can help to make the holidays even happier.

Help College Students This Holiday Season College is a time when many students form friendships and make memories that last a lifetime. College is also a time when students learn to stretch a dollar, and the right gift come the holiday season can have a big impact on a college student’s life. The following are a few gift ideas that may help make your favorite student’s second semester a success.* Books and supplies: Textbooks and supplies remain one of the biggest expenses for today’s college students. According to the College Board, a not-for-profit organization aimed at helping college students be successful, the average cost for books and supplies during the 2011-2012 school year was roughly $1,200. Such an expense can be daunting for college students, and rela-tives can help them out come the holidays by paying for a portion or all of their second semester textbooks and supplies. Such a gesture might not make the most sentimental holiday gift, but it’s a practical present that will go a long way toward helping a financially struggling student pay his or her bills.* Travel: College students who want to study abroad or travel for spring break must bankroll those travels themselves. In addition, some students struggle to pay for their travel back home during the holiday season or during other breaks from class. Adults who want to lend a college student a helping hand this holiday season can offer to help pay those travel costs. Men and women who travel a lot for work might be able to use their airline miles to secure a free or low-cost ticket for the college student in their life.* Computer accessories and programs: Of course, not all gifts need to be financially oriented. Practical gifts like computer accessories can also make a great gift for college students. Nowa-days, many colleges and universities require incoming students to have their own desktop or laptop computers. Students with their own laptops might appreciate new laptop bags that make it easier to transport their computers to and from classes and the library. In addition, some ma-jors, such as graphic design, require that students use ever-evolving and expensive computer software. These programs are often installed on computers in the university’s labs, but students may perform better in school if they install such programs on their own computers. Upgrading students’ computer software can save them money and help them do better in school.* Gaming consoles: Another great gift for college students is the latest video gaming console. Though such a gift might not be as virtuous as new textbooks or computer programs, a gaming console can help students unwind from the stresses of schoolwork. Today’s college students grew up with gaming consoles and many are avid gamers, so a new gaming console can also be a great way for them to make new friends who share similar interests.

Did You Know? Many area shopping malls offer some method of transportation between tourist sites or trans-portation hubs. For shoppers looking to avoid the hassles of finding a parking space at malls and shopping centers, shuttle buses may be the answer. For example, the Mall of America in Minneapolis offers free shuttle service between the stores and around 50 hotels in the vicinity. To investigate the possibilities of transportation to a mall near you, visit the mall’s information kiosk during your next visit and inquire as to whether a shuttle van or bus is available. Also, you may contact local bus companies to find out whether there is a free or paid shuttle available. Typically, these will be stationed at park-and-rides or in large parking lots. The bus will pick up and deliver you to the same location. Seniors may be entitled to complementary busing to the mall courtesy of municipal senior busing systems or accessible ride programs.

Albany, NY (October 15, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mis-sion of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Emp-ties For Animals” campaign has raised over $73,000 thru Sept. 2012, an increase of $17,638 or 33% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating dis-tributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.

DudleyDudley answers to his name, has no prob-lems using the litter box, likes to play in his water bowl and drink water from the tub. He likes to play with his pink kick

toy, especially after it has been sprayed with catnip spray, and also loves to chase

around the laser light. He does like to rough house with the other kitties and

we think he would prefer to be the domi-nant cat. Dudley should have a playmate (and not a docile cat) and a family that is home a lot. He's a sweety and likes to be

Did You Know?According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administra-tion, it is illegal to disconnect, reset or alter a vehicle’s odom-eter with the intent to change the number of miles thereon. Despite the law, the NHTSA notes that perpetrating odometer fraud has gotten easier thanks to digital odometers. Since digi-tal odometers have no moving parts, it is harder to detect if a digital odometer has been tampered with. The best way to de-tect odometer fraud might be with the naked eye and a vehicle history report. A driver can gauge the vehicle’s condition and examine the vehicle history report to determine if any fraudu-lent activity has occurred.
