SPA seminar series Social Practice in the Arts practice-as-research seminars This year the Centre for Cultural Partnerships is relaunching its ‘Culture and Community Research Network’ seminars reorienting them to the growing prevalence and resonance of social practiceacross the arts and community art. We aim to be relevant for MFA, PhD and other emerging researchers who have an interest in participatory, relational and sociallyengaged practices. This includes methodological explorations of artistic, sensory and collaborative practices in conducting, generating and representing research. The speakers are outlined below from across a variety of practices, research experiences and interestson these themes. Come along on selected Tuesdays, 35pm. Art Auditorium, School of Art, Gate 4, Dodds Street, VCA Southbank. (Unless advertised otherwise.) Seminars will be followed by an invitation to continue informal discussions over drinks and food nearby. All welcome! These seminars are public events. Contact Dr. James Oliver ([email protected]). Semester One 9 th April – Lyndal Jones Lyndal is an internationally renowned artist, across performance practices, visual art, arts education and research. She is Professor of Contemporary Art, School of Media and Communication, RMIT University. 23 rd April – Stephanie Hemelryk Donald Stephanie is a leading researcher of visual cultural, and cultural change through creative arts. She is an ARC Future Fellow and Professor of Comparative Film and Cultural Studies, at UNSW. 7 th May – Mick Douglas Mick is an artist and practicebased researcher with an interest in sociallyengaged public art and sustainable mobility. He is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Design, RMIT University. 21 st May – Michelle Duffy Michelle is a Cultural Geographer with an artsresearch interest in sound, music and performance, in relation to emotion/affect, identity/community. She is a Senior Lecturer at Monash University.

Semester Two  

10th  Sept  –  Tony  Birch  

Tony  is  an  award-­‐winning  writer,  historian,  novelist  and  collaborative  artist-­‐researcher-­‐curator.  He  is  a  Senior  Lecturer  in  the  School  of  Culture  and  Communication,  University  of  Melbourne.  

 

17th  Sept  –  Barb  Bolt  

Barb  is  an  artist  and  academic,  with  an  interest  in  visual  art,  philosophy,  new  materialism  and  ethics.  She  is  an  Associate  Professor  and  Associate  Dean  at  the  VCA  and  MCM,  University  of  Melbourne.  

 

24th  Sept  –  Alyson  Campbell  

Alyson  is  a  theatre  practitioner  and  researcher,  with  interests  in  dramaturgy,  gender  and  queer  theory  and  performance.  She  is  a  Senior  Lecturer  in  Theatre  at  the  VCA  and  MCM,  University  of  Melbourne.  

 

8th  Oct  –  Sarah  Pink  

Sarah  is  a  visual  anthropologist/ethnographer.  She  writes  extensively  on  the  theory/methodology  of  applied,  sensory  practice.  She  is  Professor  of  Design,  Media  Ethnography,  at  RMIT  University.  

 

15th  Oct  –  James  Hullick    

James  is  a  musician,  sound  artist  and  researcher  who  explores  social  issues  through  music  creation.    James  is  also  a  McKenzie  Postdoctoral  Fellow,  Faculty  of  VCA  and  MCM,  University  of  Melbourne.  

 

22nd  Oct  –  Ross  Gibson  

Ross  is  an  artist  and  academic  investigating  the  use  of  narrative  and  private  ritual  in  the  comprehension  of  everyday  experience.  He  is  Professor  of  Contemporary  Arts,  University  of  Sydney.
