Clerkenwell was at the forefront of

industry during the late 19th and early

20th centuries and was home to

Carlo Gatti’s multi-million pound ice cream

empire. One of London’s first horse-tram

services began from Islington Green to

Ropemaker Street in 1871, while the Black Cat

cigarette factory on City Road produced one

of the first machine-made cigarettes. The

giant cat logo remains today, more than 100

years later.

Named after the Clerks’ Well which was

rediscovered in 1924, Clerkenwell has a

long and rich history.

The Monastic Order of the Knights Hospitallers

of St John of Jerusalem - an order set up

to provide medical assistance during the

Crusades - had its English headquarters at the

Priory of Clerkenwell in the early 1500s. The

headquarters of the St John Ambulance would

later be in the area.

A COLOURFUL HISTORY OF CLERKENWELL

In 1890, the world’s first open-access public

library was opened on Skinner Street. Before

the building was demolished in the 1960s, the

chief librarian also introduced the country’s first

dedicated children’s section.

Oliver Cromwell and Erasmus Smith had

houses in Clerkenwell, while it is said that

Vladimir Lenin and a young Joseph Stalin met in

the Crown Tavern on Clerkenwell Green when

the latter was visiting London in 1903. More

recently, London’s first gastropub, The Eagle,

opened in Clerkenwell in 1991.

It’s now known that happy people don’t just

enjoy life, they’re likely to live longer, too. The

English Longitudinal Study of Ageing by a team

at the University College London found that

those in better moods were 35% less likely to

die in the next five years when taking their life

situations into account.

Just as in the rest of life, the key is making

it sustainable. As many studies into general

wellbeing have shown, a sense of happiness

tends to be fleeting and the goodwill caused

by a new company perk, a successful project

or an office makeover will only last so long.

At Spacestor, we understand that retaining

a dedicated, passionate workforce involves

making long-lasting changes that focus on the

wellbeing of employees and the contribution

that they make to the company.

When workers feel that they are a

dynamic and essential part of a

team, they are more productive and

willing to go the extra mile for their customers

and co-workers. For this reason, forward-

thinking consultants recommend giving praise

openly, setting goals appropriate to the work

and always taking your employees’ needs

seriously.

By respecting and listening to your staff, you’ll

be giving them the encouragement they need

to stay loyal and committed to your company’s

goals. We believe it is important to ensure your

workforce is happy and productive, as this

enables your company to perform well.

A HAPPY TEAM IS A

PRODUCTIVETEAM

Support worker wellbeing to build motivationLook after your staff and you’ll all reap the rewards. Above

all, people value recognition and respect. Supporting their

wellbeing in turn fosters their productivity. A positive work

culture is the ultimate end goal.

Ingredients

2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder

1 duck breast, skin on and scored

1 tbsp olive oil

2 shallots, finely chopped

4 tbsp plum sauce

4 tbsp dark soy sauce

4 tbsp sherry vinegar

1 tsp sesame oil

110g pack pomegranate seeds

1 Gem lettuce, quartered lengthways

2 carrots, julienned or grated

½ cucumber, julienned or grated

½ ripe avocado, peeled & quartered

Step 1 Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

Rub the five-spice into the duck breast on

both sides and place in a medium frying pan,

skin-side down. Fry the breast on a medium

heat for 4 mins until the skin turns golden

brown. Cook for 1 min on the other side to

seal the meat, then transfer to a small baking

tray and wipe out the pan. Put the duck in the

oven for 10 mins (or 12-14 mins if you like it

cooked through).

Step 2 Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in the

pan and gently cook the shallots for about

5 mins until soft. Add the plum sauce, soy,

vinegar and sesame oil. Turn the heat to high

and simmer for about 2 mins until the sauce

thickens. Remove from the heat, tip in half the

pomegranate seeds and leave to cool.

Summer duck salad recipeInspired to make the most of every day through creative effort, we’d

like to share this extra special lunch idea with you. It’s just the thing to

perk up your afternoon, with zingy flavours and fresh greens.

Step 3 Once the duck breasts are cooked, leave

them to rest while you prepare the rest of the

salad. Heat a griddle pan on a high heat and

char the lettuce quarters for 2 mins each side.

Put the carrots and cucumber in a bowl and

toss with half the dressing.

Step 4 Pile onto a serving platter with the

lettuce and avocado. Slice the duck breast into

6 thick slices, arrange on top and scatter over

the remaining pomegranate seeds. Serve the

extra dressing on the side.

outstanding design and quality of Spacestor

products. The top motivation of his team is to

provide the best customer service and be a

Product of choice

With its home-style comforts, Jim would

PHIL ED-WARDSWith over 22 years’

experience at Spacestor,

Phil has an overarching

perspective and takes a

long-term view.

P hil has seen Spacestor grow

exponentially with increased

manufacturing ability, investments

in new machines and processes, bespoke

capabilities, and a willingness to go further with

‘specials’. An achievable goal for Spacestor is

£30 million in five years’ time, says Phil.

A great team spirit at all levels is key to the

positive work culture at Spacestor, which Phil

values. Colleagues share both successes and

failures, and tackle challenges with a ‘can do’

attitude, he says. He is known to be calm under

pressure and not many things vex him. He gets

mildly annoyed if someone leaves their car’s

rear wiper on when it’s not raining, or doesn’t

turn the lights out when leaving a room. His

top choice of Spacestor furniture for his home

is Snugglestor. In fact, two – one on either

side of the fireplace in his study for visitors to

perch and chat.

With a strong sense of team, it’s not surprising

that Phil’s top business quotes are by Steven

Covey, the author of The 7 Habits of Highly

Effective People: ‘Listen with the intent to

understand, not the intent to reply,’ and, ‘Seek

first to understand, then to be understood.’

Discover the power of trust

One of the most important things that

a manager can do is to trust others.

Research going back as far as the 1960s

shows that trusting your employees gives them

ownership of their work and the opportunity

to solve problems. This in turn improves their

job satisfaction and frees you up to develop

strategies and initiatives.

Trusting customers and suppliers is also

essential to productivity. When you tell your

suppliers what you need and leave it to them to

deliver, they are more likely to use their initiative

to find solutions. If you’re happy to show them

how your processes work - to have them work

with rather than for you - then you can link up

your separate processes to make these work

more efficiently.

This modern approach extends to

trusting systems and technology. The

programs created by statisticians to process

big data are said to make better decisions

than managers do. It’s about trusting your

statisticians, your programmers and the

processes of data gathering.

If we reduce our control and trust others, we

allow them space to grow and become worthy

of our trust. It involves accepting that others are

as capable as you of making the right decisions

on particular issues. There are many approaches

to building trust. Pick one, try it, and work from

there. Things can only get better.

The secret to successful teamworkTrust is on the up. More transparency in organisations means

employee engagement has improved. High-trust work cultures

are known to lead to better business results. A high-control

management style is now out of date.

The understated design wraps up several

influences in a unique form. It could

be seen as smart casual, Scandinavian,

urban loft or industrial. Whatever your take on it,

you can be assured of a hard-working desk - or

collaboration table - that suits any workspace.

The design elements are valued for subtle

creative flair that livens up a space. The raw

timber provides a touch of nature that is a nod

to the huge trend to ‘bring the outside in’, to

soften modern interiors. This contrasts with the

spacious top available in a wide range of finishes

with the option of dividing screens.

Matching stylish design with practicality, the Zee

bench desk system has an extremely durable

core, is built using FSC certified materials and

offers efficient cable management.

This versatile piece of workspace

equipment is proving to be the essential

bench desk system needed to support

modern ways of working. It is simple but

effective, and distinctively elegant.

RICH-ARD LUKERInspired by

outstanding design,

Richard is keen for

Spacestor to reach

new heights of

success

R ichard gets a kick out of working

as part of a team to win an order.

His enthusiasm means he has high

expectations for Spacestor, with the ambition

to open accounts in Europe in the next five

years. He’s seen rapid progress over the past

year and was excited to hear that Spacestor

has ordered the new CNC machinery which

enables faster, smoother cutting to achieve

free-flowing curves.

Of all the events Richard attends, 100% Design

has become one of the best, he says. He avidly

follows the latest design trends. The Zee table,

with its Scandi look and spacious, elegant

design, would be his choice of Spacestor

product for his home, in his dining room.

Richard describes himself as very particular - the

type of person who eyes the shadow gaps to

make sure that they all line up. His top ‘wow’

moment at Spacestor was when he first saw

the new reception at the modern headquarters

in Hemel Hempstead. Quotes by Hilary Hinton

‘Zig’ Ziglar are his top inspiration. These include:

‘A goal properly set is halfway reached,’ and,

‘You will get all you want in life, if you help

enough other people get what they want.’

We try to show our faces at all major events related

09/15T he 100% Design show over again for

success story for Spacestor; greeting our

existing contacts and meeting many great new

ones too.

Under the cavernous Victorian arches of

the Olympia Grand Exhibition Hall, the

stunning architecture and natural light fully

complimented the current urban vintage look.

Spacestor’s market-place theme was extremely

popular with many observing ‘this is the best

stand at the show!’. This, coupled with the

artisan feel, gave our stand just the personality

we wanted: a less corporate feel, bringing the

outside in.

The show successfully saw the major launch

of our new brand, along with new products –

desking, lockers and storage, but all with our

same fundamental modular approach to Make

of much attention, expertly demonstrating

on Farringdon Road was abuzz with visitors

who were interested to see our latest designs,

from the fully equipped meeting pod Railway

Carriage, to our versatile Zee bench desk.

HotLocker Agile, the app-controlled locker

system, was also a popular choice, for a

personal storage solution in agile workspaces.

‘Agile work practices are increasingly being

STYLISH SOLUTIONS for the modern workspace

We’ve recently refurbished our Hemel

Hempstead head office and have

made good use of some of the most

innovative products from our range.

Office makeover at our HQ

The new installations have boosted

the lively feel of the environment and

have given our team more freedom to

work in zones they feel the most comfortable

in. Putting our own creations to the test in

the real world helps us to stay close to the

experiences of our customers and end-users,

whilst giving us inspirations to develop and

improve our products.

We’re on the road

Equipped with a 40ft articulated trailer,

we’re able to bring our latest designs

straight to your door. We understand

that it’s not always possible to take time out of

a busy schedule to visit our London showroom

or a design show, so we’re geared up to come

to you. Our showroom-on-wheels has been

fully kitted out as an inspirational setting for

workspace or educational furniture.

We’ve taken every effort to make the Tardis-like

interior as stylish as any modern workspace,

as a showcase for a selection of our products,

including lockers, seating and desks. We can

also customize the interior according to your

choices. So, if you’re tight for time, why not

arrange your own showroom visit complete

with buffet lunch.

WE COME TO YOU

A combination of contrasts can give

a refreshing result. Fan combines a

luxurious, sculpted chair with a modern

splayed base. The variety of quality materials

used give it a special twist, for a distinctive style.

The use of wood is on trend and this is given

a sophisticated edge with the metal detail.

These two elements allow it to fit into the latest

settings, from industrial rustic to minimalist.

The upholstery is substantial and evokes the

comfort of an armchair in a slick new shape,

with fine stitching detail. The wide choice of

fabrics includes neutral, vibrant and patterned to

provide the look that you want.

MEET FAN

This unique design offers the comfort of a

well-upholstered classic chair and the elegant

lines of a modern shape. Beautifully versatile

and robust, Fan has been created to add a

touch of style to a modern workspace.

This high-performance design offers all

that a CEO could want from a premium

spacestor.com

An integrated frame with durable components

underlies this distinctive design. Comfort is key

for full support during long meetings and the

intuitive ‘Rocker’ mechanism facilitates this.

There is the choice of a high or low backrest

which harmonises perfectly with the aluminium

armrests. This robust, sleek style will prove to be

an asset for those who require a sophisticated

chair with exceptional comfort and functionality.
