Where WouldYou Rather Be?By Matthew Hirtes

So where would you rather be?Playa de las Conchas, which

youll find located in the north-west of La Graciosa, astunningly beautiful island offthe coast of Lanzarote.Whats all the fuss about?Think tropically turquoisewaters which will lull you into

thinking youve stumbledacross a long, lost Caribbeanbeach. Before the rush of thetypically choppy Atlanticwaves snap you back to reality. The turquoise is actuallycaused by the 500 metres offine, white coral sand whichreflects the beachs abundantsunlight.Everything moves about at asloths pace in La Graciosa, with the exception of the fish.Theyve good reason to keep

on the move, seeing as fishingis the islands main industry.Although use of the termindustry suggests a hive ofactivity, youd struggle tonotice on this most languorousof isles. There arent any roads tospeak of here; only tracks ofunpaved sand. Indeed, riseearly enough in the morningand youll catch the natives, brushes in hand, sweeping the'streets' smooth of the previous

evenings footprints. LaGraciosa only has 500inhabitants, the majority ofwhom dont own one of thefew 4x4s youll see on theisland. If you want to save

your soles, you can haggle witha 4x4 owner to ferry you to thebeach - thats the closest theyget to a taxi service on LaGraciosa.

You know the score by now. Toread the rest of the article

    How To MakeA Tortilla

    Espaola "DeSan Sebastin"

    There is a good story

    behind this tortilla placed

    on the Eye On Spain

    newsletter. I will let you

    discover more.

The chances are that you'll haveheard of and probably tried aTortilla Espaola. A very simple, easy to make but wonderfulSpanish dish. But the chancesare you'll probably have neverheard of the San Sebastianversion.

Well, it's not really a version of itas such. Bill Clements sort ofmade the name up! In his ownwords:

"I am the cook at home and oftenrustle up a Spanish style meal. Many years ago, a girlfriend ofmine was half Spanish. Hermother, who I loved to bits, camefrom San Sebastin and gaveme my initial interest in cooking.

A regular dish she prepared wasa tortilla, but rather spicy andabsolutely delicious. Not in theusual 'tortilla de huevos conpatatas'.

I named the recipe to remind meof the woman who gave me theinspiration to cook."

By the way, if you cannot findMaris Piper potatoes out there, then a similar large flourytextured potato will do. The typethat roast very crisply. So here you go, here's how to

make this wonderful TortillaEspaola de San Sebastian:

    Crisis, what crisis?

Maxine Raynor from Money Saver Spain takes a

tongue in cheek look at how you can save money

in the current situation. She has started up a website in the style of Money Saving Expert in

the UK aimed at an English speaking audience in

    Spain.

January has seen income tax raised, petrol prices up and other depressing

news on the horizon as Spains recessionis due to last another couple of years. But

with a few hints on how to become asavvy shopper in Spain youll find you

have more money in your wallet.

First of all befriend a pensioner and offerto do his shopping for him online on one

condition: he has to get a Carrefour 65+card first. That way he wont pay VAT on

fresh produce (over 4000 items!) untilthe end of March and, as youll do your

shopping with his, you wont either. See youve already saved a few euros every

    week.

Then pretend youre a tourist. The nexttime you plan to go shopping in El Corte

Ingls, take along your passport youllget a 10% discount on loads of items with

their tourist card. In fact, when friendsand family are over take them along to El

Corte Ingls too with their passports (tobuy you stuff of course).

Now if some of your visitors are non-EU

citizens youre in luck they can helpyou to get the 18% VAT back on some of

the more expensive goods youve beenputting off buying for ages (laptop, e-

    reader, etc).

Of course, using your friends and familylike this might mean they wont come

back again, which is actually good for your wallet too given the amount they

    eat and drink!

The value of gold is high at the moment,so sort out all your broken chains, odd

earrings (odd as in single, not strange although strange ones should be sold too

as theyll never be back in fashion) andcocoa-tin-lid-sized medallions and take it

all along to your local Compro Oro. Agood tip before you go is to practise in

front of a mirror your best I am nothighly embarrassed look as your 9 carat

stuff is given back to you - anyone oldenough to remember the Ratners debacle

in the UK back in the early 90s willrecall with pride that that British

jewellers sold earrings that werecheaper than an M&S prawn sandwich

but probably wouldn't last as long.

Become an avid unused mobile phonecollector (for a day). Most people dont

bother to trade in their mobile phones when upgrading and these are worth

money. Just make sure the phones arefully charged and can be switched on as

that way theyre worth more, then eithersell them online or in El Corte Ingls. If

youre not comfortable with asking yourneighbours for their old phones, give

them 5 (this will help your consciencewhen you sell it for 30).

    This tongue-in-cheek article was written

    b y M a x i n e R a y n o r w h o r u n swww.MoneySaverSpain.com where she

includes more serious money saving tips

and includes all the latest deals and

offers in the weekly newsletter (sign up

on the website) and on Twitter &

    Facebook.

I have had a look at Maxines site andit is looking good as she builds it up bit

by bit. If you have any tips that you

want to share feel free to respond toher posts on the site and bookmark itfor future reference. I know she has

great plans for the site in the future.

Mourinho andMadrid - AMatch Made inHeaven (or Hell)

Sid Lowe is probably the mostentertaining football writerever to have graced the pagesof a major national newspaperor three. This week he haslooked into the discontent atReal Madrid... you know... the

club that has won 17 out of 20games, sits with a five pointlead at the top of La Liga andhas scored over three goals agame in doing so. However,Mourinho who could probablystart an argument on themoon and real Madrid withtheir incessant power strugglesare threatening to muck it up...again!

There were just hours to gountil Real Madrid's match

against Athletic Bilbao andMadrid were about to finishthe first half of the season fivepoints clear at the top of thetable with 16 wins in 19games. Favourites to win thetitle, they were about to scoretheir 67th goal and CristianoRonaldo would soon be on 23,one ahead of Leo Messi. But itwas not about that all that. Not now and not later. Itwould not even be about the4-1 win a brilliant game,

open, exciting and end-to-end,between two sides that can begreat to watch. The focus waselsewhere. Even JosMourinho's focus waselsewhere. The team meetingat Madrid's Mirasierra SuitesHotel wasn't so much aboutformation as aboutinformation.

To read the rest of thisfascinating article aboutinfighting and intrigue take a

look at the Guardian website. And if there is one footballwriter you should assiduouslyread about Spain it is Sid.

The Day Jon Caught TheMallorcas Vintage TrainJon Yeomans runsVida London, a website

about Hispanic Culture in the Capital

City. He likes all things Spanish and here

he takes a trip on the vintage train route

    that cuts across Mallorca.

Mallorcas one and only vintage train runs from thecapital, Palma, to the town of Sller, in the north ofthe island.

Completed in 1911 to ferry fruit, the train line stilloperates 1920s rolling stock, which clatters andclanks along every inch of the 28km route.

The trip to Sller takes about an hour, and costs 17return (10 one way). Its one of only three railwaylines on the island, the other two being modernsuburban routes. Although youll see the odd local

jumping aboard, and the train stops at a handful ofhalts en route, this is primarily a tourist affair.

Starting from a quaint old station next to thecapitals central bus and metro terminal, the Sllertrain first runs through the streets of Palma beforecutting through industrial sprawl and emerging inflat farmland, dotted with granjasand olive groves.

Past the town of Bunyola the train edges up into the1,000m-high Serra de Tramuntana, the toothy

mountains on Mallorcas northern shoulder that givethe island its most dramatic, and unexpected, scenery. It then plunges into a series of tunnels, giving you a taste of what it must have been like toride the London Underground a hundred years ago.

Out the other side, youre treated to a sequence ofstunning valley views, hemmed in on either side byMallorcas lush vegetation and glowered upon by theTramuntana peaks. Its a world away from Palmasmainland-city vibe and the beer, egg n chips townsof the resorts.

At length the train arrives in the valley of Sller,

cutting back and forth down the slope until it slotsinto the towns period-piece station. Adding to the finde sicle atmosphere is a 1910s tram that runs on thehour and ferries tourists down to nearby Port deSller.

To read the rest of the story and more importantlytake a look at the images get on over to Vida Londonand see Johns full story

    STOP THAT BUILDINGNOW OR ELSE!

We all know that politicians dont have any principles in general. We all know that they are corrupt. After all the question has oftenbeen asked here in Spain, How do you know if a politician iscorrupt? Answer Do they have a pulse? What we never suspected was that they have little backbone andcan be convinced in a very short meeting that their firm stanceagainst the construction of a 178m high tower can be changed

very easily. The Pelli tower is being constructed on the Cartuja island inSeville, a wasteland these days after the Expo in 1992. It is beingbuilt by the almost bankrupt Cajasol, the regional savings bank, tohouse their offices. It will be the highest building in Sevilla. However, the construction of the Pelli tower puts Sevillas statusas a World Heritage Centre under threat. UNESCO are nothappy and feels that they may take away the status as a result. Therefore the Mayor was so adamant that it would not be built...until the head of the savings bank reminded him that the councilhad already received 23 million in taxes and he may want toreconsider his position because a lot of jobs could be lost. A PLACE INTHE SUN ANDTHE BESTKEPT SECRETON THESPANISHCOASTLINE

My co author on TheLaptop Entrepreneur was

working with A Place InThe Sun last week. Here hetells us more about Gandiaand the charms of JasmineHarmon!

Last week I had the pleasure ofmeeting Channel 4s A Place inthe Sun team (including thelovely Jasmine Harman), whowere filming in my area. Theyhave some house hunters whowant to move to the Gandia area, which gave the A Place in theSun team a reason to come hereand their first experience, to thebest of my knowledge, of Gandia which must be one of the bestkept secrets on the Spanishcoastline. In fact, one of the oddities ofliving in Gandia is that, whilst itis well known in Spain, the townis virtually unknown outside thecountry. This is despite Gandiabeing a large coastal town (pop.80,000) with one of the finestbeaches along the Mediterranean(it stretches some 7.5km and iscomprised of a wide area of

golden sand). There is also amarina and port and an area ofnightclubs and entertainmentfamous for its vibrancy throughout Spain.Meanwhile, immediately inlandof Gandia beach are extensive, evergreen citrus groves that liebetween dramatic mountains thatare perfect for walking, climbing, cycling, bird watching and otheroutdoor activities. Indeed, thecountryside around Gandia is adelight and is what makes thearea so seductive to Spanish

holidaymakers and the fewforeigners living here.

Curated by Graham Hunt (Co-Author of www.laptopentrepreneur.co)

When you have good rawmaterials you just have to to putthem together well intosomething that is worth it. Spainhas the raw materials but can itmix them together well.

If you give everyone the ingredients and theinstructions to bake a cake it is likely that you willget ten very different tasting, and looking, cakes. If you bring ten different people to Spain theywill have ten different viewpoints and tendifferent experiences. Their reaction to Spainwill depend on their cultural background, theireducation level, their likes and dislikes and evenhow they felt on that day.

    What Are The Raw Materials?

The good thing is that Spain has the raw

materials to make a darn good cake. There is theobvious sun, sea, sand and sangria (I am sure Ihave missed an s out there ;-)) There are theinnumerable World Heritage sites, thespectacular scenery (Spain is the highest countryin Europe apart from Switzerland) Yet there issomething else, something that makes Spaindifferent still. However to understand it you needto be here for some time. Those people that havelived here or a time may well have discovered it.

    Lets Call It Society

Britain lost its society with the fallout from theThatcherite revolution as everyone got on theirbikes and went to look for opportunitieselsewhere. The soul was ripped out ofcommunities starting with the mining villages, moving onto the inner cities and finishing with aflourish in the never ending soulless housingestates surrounding every major town and city inthe country.

Spain never lost it... until now.

    The Battle To Retain Society

Spain is struggling at the moment. There is abrain drain moving out of the country due to thelack of opportunities here for recent highlyqualified graduates. One of the main growth

areas in the Spanish economy is English as aforeign language specifically tailored to interviewtechniques. I know many people minting it withthat profession.

    That is extremely sad!

Young Spanish people have never moved faraway from home. The average age for a youngSpaniard to leave home is still between 32-34

years old depending on the survey you read, butthat is changing and that change threatenssociety here at a visceral level.

Spain has the raw material to change. It has theyoung talent to change. What it may not have, orrather, lets face facts, what it does nothave is

the leadership it needs to take it forward into thefuture it so needs.

Luckily the raw materials make a good cake still.
