SPARK LAB RATIONALE

USHER’S NEW LOOK IS LEADING THE CHARGE TO SPARK YOUNG MINDS. Initiated by our desire to spark more young minds, the Spark Lab will be a student-led, safe space where youth convene to learn, create and innovate.

THE STUDENTS HAVE SPOKEN.88% OF UNL STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE A SAFE SPACE TO USE THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING AFTER SCHOOL OR ON WEEKENDS: • 73% desire tutoring and mentoring • 57% want to explore

entrepreneurship.

UNL STUDENTS ARE HUNGERING FOR MORE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING: • 97% said they would visit the

SparkLab 1-5 times/week. • 57% want to become content

producers (video, music, multi-media).

PHASE ONE: 5 SPARK SPACES

A training space for UNL Academy classes, Music 101 classes, ACT/SAT prep, speakers, tutoring, mentoring, poetry slams, etc.

A green screen room for videographers, photographers and digital content creators. Visual storytelling and online media hub.

An incubator for testing new concepts, contemplating issues and developing culturally relevant solutions.

A space for interactive design, testing of games and apps, hackathons and other mind building competitions.

A social gathering hub for foodies. A place for students to create, taste and test new culinary creations.

SPARK LAB FEATURES

The UNL Spark Lab Will Promote impromptu gatherings as well as scheduled speaker series and meet-ups. Activities will

be held after school, on weekends and daytime during the summer.

UNL College Students will take a leading role in developing the initial lab activities and assist with staffing. Community volunteers will also have a role as speakers, tutors & mentors.

The UNL Spark Lab will be the hub of ‘YOE Media’ - A youth oriented media network where students find the news, curate and report it through their filters based on their interests. It becomes the heart of the UNL digital network.
