Business Manager’s Message

Alan Golden - Business Manager - [email protected] - X231 The December Union Meeting is always the biggest

meeting of the year with members being recognized for

their years of service to the Brotherhood.

Congratulations to all IBEW members who received

pins or retirement watches. At this years meeting we

hosted two special guests: former Assistant Business

Manager Jerry Tongue, who celebrated his 95th

birthday on December 4th, happy belated birthday to

Brother Tongue and International President, Lonnie

Stephenson, who was on hand to present Beau

Cummins with the Lifesavings Award for his actions on

September 14th. President Stephenson rearranged his

schedule so he could be on hand to present Brother

Beau Cummins with this award. As you heard at the

meeting, he was very honored to be invited here to

present this award. Congratulations to Brother Beau

Cummins on being presented the IBEW Lifesavings

Award, it was definitely a well-deserved award.

Every year our November Union meeting is the tip off

for the holiday season with Thanksgiving being the first

up. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, the biggest

community event of the year takes place in Rockford,

Stroll on State. Our LMCC was proud to be a premier

sponsor for this year’s Stroll on State. This year’s event

had an attendance of 88 thousand people. Thank you to

all that helped transform our Labor Day float into a

Christmas themed float for this parade. Their hard

work was sincerely appreciated.

Now for our kids Christmas party! At this year’s party

we had a record attendance with over 550 RSVP’s! This

event is, bar none, the best one of the year.

With this being such a busy month, there is also a big

thank you due to all that took time out of their busy

schedules to help with this year’s Christmas party.

This is about the only time of year that for

approximately 3 hours there is no talk of business,

projects or politics. It’s all about the kids and grandkids

of the IBEW. If you want to know how important this

party is to our Local, look no further than retired

Brother Tyler Hillman. Tyler sits in his Santa chair, in a

very warm costume for three hours every year and

refuses to take a break because he doesn’t want any of

our kids to miss Santa. This was Brother Hillman’s 18th

year as Santa, and again, we thank him for his part in

this year’s Christmas party.

Now it’s time for me to give out some well-deserved

thank you’s. IBEW, Local Union 364 was one of the

busiest Locals in the Sixth District in 2018. I would

like to give a sincere thank you to the Business Agents

and office staff for all their hard work throughout the

year. To the Officers and the Stewards, it is extremely

important that you all know how much your hard work

and the time you put in is appreciated.

I would also like to extend a thank you to all our

members who stepped up and served on committees

this past year, you were a big part of our Local Union’s

success in 2018, and there is no doubt that you will

continue to be involved and part of the future. With

that said, one of our officers will be retiring, Brother

Jeff Schnaiter has been a big part of everything we do

here in the Local Union and on the Apprenticeship

Committee, and I want to wish him a happy and healthy

retirement.

It’s very easy to talk about what you’re going to do, but

to go out and get it done for the Local membership is

one of the most rewarding feelings you can experience

within the brotherhood. I am extremely proud of all

that we have been able to accomplish this past year and

am looking forward to a very bright future with this

group of officers and staff. We have accomplished a lot

as a Local Union but there is much more work to be

done.

Last thing is, I would like to ask the Brothers and

Sisters the same thing I have asked in past years, keep

the families of all the IBEW, Local Union 364 Brothers

and Sisters who passed away in 2018 and our members

who continue to fight with health issues in your

thoughts and prayers.

I would like to wish all 364 members and their families

a Happy and Prosperous 2019.

During the month of December, we

picketed Bartosik Electric from

Streamwood, Illinois at Cheng

Orthodontics in Rockford and picketed

Carroll Electric from Janesville

Wisconsin at the new Monroe Clinic in

Durand. We were also able to remove

Non-Signatory contractor Lee County

Electric from a McDonalds remodel in

Dixon and finish the job with Complete

Electric.

Since 2018 is over, we would like to

take the time to thank all the Brothers

and Sisters in Local 364 who have

helped us throughout the year. From

picketing to hand billing or calling in to

check on jobs, our Local would not be

as strong as it is without the support of

our membership.

As we head into 2019, we shall continue

to remain aggressive against all non-

signatory threats in our jurisdiction and

with the support of our members we

will continue to remain the leaders in

the IBEW when in comes to market

share so once again thank you.

We are always looking for help

picketing or hand

billing so if anyone

has time please

contact me at the hall. We can

accommodate any day of the week if

you can help.

Happy Holidays to all

In Brotherhood,

Brad Williams

At the Chicago/Rockford Int. Airport,

Amazon’s new 130,000sq’ Cargo Building

Expansion was awarded to Associated

Electric from Local 117. Associated has

recently hired 1 wireman from Local 364

and cleared in one of their own to begin

work. This first contract awarded is only for

the building shell, with the interior package

to be awarded in the coming weeks.

Scandroli is the GC on this project.

Also, at the Rockford Airport, the next

phase of Tilt Conveyor to be installed at the

UPS facility has been awarded to Ballard

Electric. There are more conveyor packages

to be awarded at UPS and should be

completed in consecutive phases over about

an 8-month period. Work could begin on

this first package by February and continue

throughout most of 2019. We will update

everyone on these projects as we receive

more information.

Dynamic Electric from Local 134 is back

onsite at Berner Foods in Afolkey to

continue working on the Line 6 Expansion

Project awarded last July. Dynamic will also

be working a 4-day shutdown at General

Mills in Belvidere on December 26th

through 29th. Currently, Dynamic has hired

2 Wiremen and cleared in 2 of their own to

get things started. After the Holidays they

plan to hire another 4 Wiremen for Berner

Foods.

Morse Electric has also been manning back

up at Berner and have about 15 men

working on various projects throughout the

plant.

Transformations Plastic Surgery will soon

have a new office location at 5995 Spring

Creek Road. Scandroli Construction is the

GC for this 2-story remodel project and

Special Power has the electrical contract.

PCI Pharma Services on Assembly Drive

have started a $4 Million Warehouse

Expansion at their Plant 2 location. Cord

Construction is the GC and Special Power

was also awarded this project.

Altmeyer Electric from Local 494 was

awarded the contract for the new Costco in

Loves Park. Altmeyer has 2 wiremen

currently onsite installing the temp power,

utility feeds, and all the necessary

foundation sleeves. This preliminary work

should be finished up by the end of

December and Altmeyer is saying that they

will not be back onsite until late February or

March for the structure. When work begins

in the Spring, Altmeyer has stated that they

will need to hire approximately 15-20

Wiremen.

Engel Electric has started work at the new

WWTP in South Beloit and have 3

Wiremen onsite. This is a $34 Million

project that started back in July but has

been very slow moving because of various

soil issues.

Sjostrom Construction was the low bidder

on the new Stockton Fire Station.

Currently, they are awaiting the boards final

approval at their January meeting, with

construction to begin sometime this Spring.

We should know who will be awarded the

electrical contract by next month’s Union

Meeting.

In DeKalb, at the NIU Holmes Student

Center, First Security from Local 701 is

working on the fire alarm installation and

Swedberg Electric continues to work on

the rest of the electrical installation. As

reported last month, Morse Electric is the

Electrical contractor for the 15-million-

dollar DeKalb County Nursing Home

expansion and remodel on Annie Glidden

Road. This project was slated to start right

after Thanksgiving, but the county and city

could not get their zoning issues worked

out, so a March 2019 start is now

expected.

In Ogle County, the new 23-Million-dollar

Jail is on schedule to begin April 1, 2019.

The due date for bids has been pushed

back to February 5, 2019. The approval of

bids will take place at the March County

Board meeting. At the new 92-bed Liberty

Village Nursing Home on East Flagg Road,

south of Lincoln School in Rochelle, the

footings have been poured. JB Contracting

from Local 176 has the electrical contract

and will start installing sleeves and the

temporary service the first week of 2019.

Additional manpower should follow soon

after. In Rochelle, Morse Electric continues

work at Americold on the general

electrical installations as well as the

installations of all the automated

equipment in this 14-story cold storage

facility. They currently have 29 members

onsite.

In Whiteside County, NuCore Electric

from Local 134 continues to work at the

new carwash in Sterling behind Aldi’s. At

the Sterling Menards, Ashburn Power and

Light from Local 134 has two members

working on the interior part of the

Menards Remodel; Engel has the lumber

warehouse portion of this remodel. On

the riverfront in Rock Falls, there is a new

46 unit My Place Hotel scheduled to be

built next to the existing Holiday Inn with

a March 2020 competition. More to come

on this.

Local 364 has two windfarm projects that

are currently under construction. The 74

tower Green River project located

predominately in far southwestern Lee

County is finished for the year. All the

base and conduit work have been

completed. The tower sections and

nacelles are scheduled to show up next

June. The 29 tower Mendota Hills project

is in its final phase. There are roughly 21

towers remaining to be wired. This project

is a little different than most in that the

transformers are located in the nacelle’s

and not outside of the tower at its base.

We would like to give a sincere thank you

to all the members working in the

southern area who serve the Local Union

as job stewards; so to Brothers Larry

Harris at Americold, Mike Larson at Green

River Wind Farm, Dave McNamara at

Northern Illinois University and Joe Eden

at Emerson (formerly Greenlee /Textron),

thank you for your effort and dedication to

Local 364.

We would like to wish everyone a very

safe and prosperous new year.

This is the first month of the new year, don’t forget to turn in your request for the Flexible Benefit for 2018 (if you have not already done so). You can get up to a maximum of $250.00 per family, per calendar year. You must be eligible for insurance benefits in order to get reimbursement. Start saving your explanation of benefits for this year, as well as any receipts that you may accumulate.

You need to submit a Flexible Benefit Form along with proof of payment for services rendered. Examples of services would be deductibles, prescription drug co-pays, anything that would be considered an out of pocket expense. If you have any questions on what will qualify for reimbursement, please contact me at 815-398-

There is one VDV Apprentice off work at this time.

We are gearing up for the 2019 Career Expo being

presented by the Northwest Illinois Building and

Construction Trades Council. This is a 3-day event

scheduled for the week of February 11th. There will

be more than 800 students from fifteen area high

schools and middle schools attending. All of the

organized apprenticeship programs will be there

demonstrating their respective trades.

We will, of course, be there representing the

electrical construction industry. We will be

explaining to the students what we do every day as

electrical workers. We will have hands-on conduit

bending as well as a photo-voltaic trainer. We will

also have flyers with information pertinent to our

training program available to the students as well as

answering any of the questions they may have.

We will be hosting students from Freeport High

School at our training center on Wednesday,

February 20th.

We held an aptitude test for qualifying applicants

on Saturday, November 17th. There were 75

applicants scheduled to take the test and 62 showed

up.

We had 27 applicants sign up for our program on

December 4th. We are on pace for over 240

applications for the year which is 60 more than we

received a year ago.

The 5th year Inside class will be taking an

estimating course during the month of January.

The 2nd year and 4th year Inside classes will be

participating in Welding Classes starting Saturday,

January 5th and running for 4 consecutive

Saturdays. The classes will be taught by Brothers Ed

Ebens Sr. and Ed Ebens Jr. The classes will be held

at Rock Valley College-Samuelson Road Campus.

We are looking at scheduling an IMSA Level 1 Fire

Alarm Class in the Spring provided there is enough

interest in the class. We currently have 2 signed up.

We have new CPR and AED training equipment

courtesy of the Safety Committee. We will be

scheduling First Aid and CPR training courses after

the first of the year. These classes will be held

separately as both classes are 3 to 4 hours in length.

Please contact the training center to sign up for

these classes or any of the other courses that we

offer.

On January 14th we will begin a new era in

Illinois Government as JB Pritzker will be sworn

in as the new Governor of the State of Illinois. So

now the real work begins. IBEW, Local Union 364

is in the unique position of having a Governor

who is a friend to working families and is also a

phone call away.

Over the course of the last 4 years, organized

labor has been under relentless attacks from ex-

Governor Rauner, now with him removed, we can

focus on repairing the damage he has done over

the last four years to labor and begin rebuilding

Illinois.

As we look back on a prosperous 2018, let us

not forget the individuals we lost this year

especially in labor where former IBEW

President, Ed Hill passed away December 1st.

He will always be remembered for making

many tough decisions during difficult times

but always had the IBEW’s best interest at heart.

We will miss you Brother Hill.

We would like to wish everyone a safe and

prosperous 2019.
