RECREATIONAL FACILITIES - VARIATIONS BY SIZE OF SETTLEMENT

small town-It is suggested to provide 1 1.2ha per 1000persons for town

recreational activities.-the open spaces had to be developed with other social culturaland commercial activities so that they can serve multi purpose.

    Medium towns

Recreational open spaces shall be provided at the rate of 1.4-

1.6Ha per 1000persons as per the hierarchy recommended. The lower income areas shall be provided with more openspaces and the area under facilities like community halls etccan be merged with the open spaces to suit their socialrequirements.Large and metro cities

The suggested standards for open spaces in large and metro citiesare 1.2-1.4 ha/1000 persons, depending on the land availability. The older parts of large cities have normally been found highlydeficient with respect to the availability of recreational spaces, thus additional provisions n the new developments to take care of

existing deficiencies also to be made.

SOCIO CULTURALMerely the prescription of norms for the provision of socio-culturalfacilities is not enough as there are certain vital issues involved withtheir provisions like religious buildings coming up on encroached sites

specially those meant for open spaces; provision of housing clusterand sector level socio-cultural facilities such as community room, community hall and library shall be given considerations.

Separate religious sites may be provided so that places of worship donot get established on encroached sites as is invariably happening.
