Foreword by the PresidentIt has always been PolyU’s top priority to foster the all-round development of our students and to ensure that our graduates possess, besides professional expertise, a global outlook, a strong sense of social responsibility, good problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills. We are delighted that our efforts have been paying off and that we have already enabled more than 270,000 “preferred graduates” to join the workforce over the past seven decades.

As a testimony to our students’ extraordinary versatility, we are proud to present this “Star Book”, which showcases our students’ various outstanding accomplishments within the “SPECIAL” framework - Social, Physical and Psychological, Ethical, Career, Intellectual, Aesthetic Development and Learning.

I hope you will enjoy reading this publication. I also look forward to your continued support for PolyU and to seeing more of our “preferred graduates” becoming assets to employers and pillars of our society.

I have experienced many difficulties in the transition from secondary to tertiary education. My mother was diagnosed with cancer when I was in Form 7 and later died. The same year, I obtained disappointing results in the examinations and was only able to enter a Higher Diploma programme. However, all these difficulties have served to make me stronger and successful.I have fully utilized these three years of university life seeking resources to equip myself as an all-round student. I have set high standards for my studies and participated in many activities to develop myself and make contributions to both the university and society.

The Most Outstanding PolyU StudentI have participated in community projects like “Tree-planting event” and “Hong Kong and Kowloon Walk for Millions”. I also joined “Good Starter Programme” to share my experience with freshmen on choosing placements, overcoming academic difficulties and balancing hall activities and study demands. Additionally, I joined projects with the American students in Hong Kong to learn more about American culture. I also visited Sichuan University to understand more about situations in the motherland. All these experiences have helped me to become a more open-minded and culturally aware person.

I believe knowledge not only needs to be acquired, but applied. Therefore, I participated in the “Preferred Graduate” Development Programme, joining two different consultant firms during my studies. One was Halcrow China Limited for slope maintenance work and the other was Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Limited to carry out railway station planning and design. These precious experiences gave me a chance to taste my future before graduation and increase my confidence in facing future challenges.

Outstanding Student, Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles

An Outstanding Student is expected to have a good academic achievement but leadership, personal development, community services and all-round development are also essential qualities. In addition, an Outstanding Student should demonstrate aspiration, initiative and confidence by pursuing life-long learning. Being selected as the Outstanding Student of the Faculty of Applied Science & Textiles is both an honour and tangible recognition of my efforts to pursue a career in fashion retailing.

I have experienced failures on the way. Sometimes it depends on how we perceive failure and how we turn it into a valuable experience. As Henry Ford says, “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”

After almost four years of study at PolyU, I have become more mature and have started thinking deeply about life. PolyU has equipped me with solid knowledge and essential skills. I believe that I am now ready for any new challenges, and prepared to contribute to the society.

Outstanding Student, Faculty of Business

My life at PolyU has been fruitful. PolyU has given me various opportunities to develop myself, for example, an overseas placement, an exchange programme and high table dinners.

From my overseas placement at Conservation Volunteers Australia, I improved my language skills and learnt about different cultures. Besides, by participating in a project to save our planet, I gained satisfaction which cannot be measured monetarily.

From my Overseas Exchange Programme at the University of Applied Sciences, Northwestern Switzerland, I became a more independent and mature person, I obtained a better understanding of a western teaching and learning environment and again my language skills were improved.

PolyU has equipped me with both professional and soft skills; I confidently believe that I am now ready for the challenges ahead and able to make contributions to the society.

Life is a process of exploring unknowns and encountering surprises. No one can predict what might happen tomorrow. The only thing one can do is to move forward. This is exactly what life in PolyU feels like. PolyU is full of opportunities. If you enjoy an exciting and challenging university life, you will have great fun here, especially for a non-local student like me.

During the first months after landing in Hong Kong, I saw and experienced new things every day. I was amazed by this energetic city and tried to handle everything positively and actively. I quickly adapted myself to the new environment.

PolyU offers many extra-curricular activities to help students to develop all round characteristics. Student can hone their skills by attending activities such as exchange programmes and community services. I believe that the experience I obtained through these programmes will definitely help me eventually succeed in my career.

PolyU marks a turning point in my early adulthood life. I have been offered a lot of fruitful learning opportunities and all-round personal development which have enriched my life and nurtured my soul. All the challenges I faced or times when I did not live up to my own expectations, motivated me to always strive for perfection. I really treasure all the resources and opportunities PolyU has given me. My university study has made me well-equipped to enter this competitive job market.

My heartfelt thanks go particularly to all the professors in the Departments of English and Chinese and Bilingual Studies who have taught and improved me with their enthusiastic help, guidance and enlightenment. Finally, I pay tribute to Prof. Demokan who approved my nomination, my very supportive family, friends and classmates.

I am very grateful for the many opportunities PolyU has given to me. I have tried to use my mind to control a computer when I did my internship in Beijing, fixed an orthotics device for cerebral palsy patients while undertaking voluntary work in Shunde, and witnessed a real-life kung-fu panda fight during a study tour to Sichuan. But that’s just me. I believe other PolyU students will have much more to share. PolyU has given us numerous opportunities to develop our potential to the fullest.

As the clock is ticking, I am finishing my satisfying university life. I am very proud of being a PolyU graduate. I believe that many will share my view. And I believe, through the knowledge and experience we have gained here, one day our dear alma mater will also be proud of us.

LAM Cheuk WangBA (Hons) in Design, Year 3

Life is bitter sweet. I have found this to be true during my three years’ study in the School of Design.

Unlike many of my schoolmates who had experience studying design in other schools or programmes, I started from zero on the first day at university. I had to put extra efforts into coping with being a design student, both physically and mentally. I kept facing challenges finishing countless studio projects (usually in overnight sessions,) in the process of learning design techniques and critical thinking.

However, those bitter tastes from the life of being a design student co-exist with the sweet flavors which make you a confident and optimistic person: positive support from tutors, schoolmates and family members, satisfaction from finishing projects, the excitement of sharing my design thoughts and the enjoyment of my life in the School of Design.

Without the bitter, one can never know how precious the sweet can be. I learned to enjoy the sweet, and appreciate the bitter!

PolyU and SHTM have provided me and my peers with more than just an education. We have been given ample opportunities to become preferred graduates who are able to succeed come what may.

By taking advantage of these opportunities which have led me to Cornell University, allowed me to share the stage with a Nobel Laureate and enabled me to network with many hospitality professionals and students from around the globe, I have been nurtured over the past three years into a more confident and well-rounded individual, a future industry leader.

My development is attributable to the University and the School and for that I am extremely grateful. Indeed, without the friendships and support of the faculty, the students and the alumni, I would not be in the position to share with you, my PolyU story.

SPECIAL Student“SPECIAL” programmes have meant a color ful university life for me. During the three years of my university study, a number of activities took me to a more mature and independent stage of life. The ‘Preferred Graduate’ Development Programme (PGDP) training in the USA equipped me with valuable practical working experience. Off-campus training such as Adventure-based Training for Physical and Psychological Wellness (ABT) and Entrepreneurship Action Project (EAP) have taught me to be open-minded and self-confident. Competing in the PolyU-IDT Innovative Entrepreneur Contest has improved my communication skills and problem solving ability. Joining the school debating team has enabled me to become a good team player. Social voluntary work such as being peer counseling ambassador has encouraged me to care about the society. I am thankful for all the all-around development opportunities SAO provided.

SPECIAL StudentThrough the SAO programmes, I discovered my potential and continued to improve myself by utilizing the SAO resources thoroughly. Camping experiences such as LCSP, ABT and EAP strengthened my leadership and communication skills. These skills are essential for my future career as a professional auditor. The study tours and mentorship programmes provided by the Faculty of Business and SAO enriched my perspectives. I had a number of chances to cooperate with people with different backgrounds. I also attended lots of recruitment talks and career related workshops. These equipped me with interviewing and workplace skills and made me more competitive in job seeking. I am thankful to SAO for organizing these programmes and contributing to my growth in the past three years.

Social development programs strengthened my skills and knowledge, and even inspired my career goal. For example, being the Vice President of the Hong Kong Outstanding Youth Volunteers Association and the Project Coordinator in AIESEC PolyU enhanced my leadership skills, communication skills and my sense of social responsibility. I initiated different social projects, including a Social Harmony project focusing on the discrimination of South Asians in Hong Kong. My intercultural communicative competence was definitely developed through these valuable experiences.

Leade rs h ip, teamwork, commun icat ion and interpersonal skills are soft skills that can only be developed by joining activities and dealing with people. The Leadership and Competence for Success Programme (LCSP) I participated in is one of the most popular programs offered by SAO. PolyU has granted me many opportunities to develop skills beyond languages and communication training in the classroom. Serving as student ambassador as well as other challenging positions in PolyU student organizations, I have undertaken territory-wide community service projects and cultural exchange tours, through which I have developed the skills to thrive in different cultural contexts. On top of my extra-curricular activities, my internship experience as a PolyU AO intern at the Education Bureau allowed me to actively engage in policy-making, developing into a preferred graduate.

My three years of study in PolyU were unforgettable. I was happy to be a member of PolyU Volleyball Team because PolyU Sports Teams are like families which give mutual support. I was also selected to be the Secretary of the Sports Team Working Group through which I made friends with other Sports Team members. Plus, I learned to write minutes, organized events and met donors. I am proud to say that PolyU Sports Teams helped me grow in both health and happiness.

Apart from being a member of swimming team and representing PolyU in the USFHK swimming competition in the past four years, I was honoured to be the Vice-Chairman of the PolyU Sports Team Working Group in 2008/09. In this role, I led some campus-wide activities, such as Info Day and Sports Team Orientation Night. These activities used my knowledge from lectures practically. I now feel able to face any challenge and have enough competitiveness to be a good employee upon my graduation.

I represented PolyU in the USFHK squash competition and we were champions for two consecutive years. I was also glad to be the Sports Team Working Group Chairman organizing events such as Info Day, Sports Team Orientation Night and the Sports Team Annual Prize Presentation. I developed leadership skills, communication skills and teamwork abilities. These will be useful one day and I will be even more proud of what I learned in PolyU Sports Teams.

My university life was much more than learning to be a professional; it was so diversified. I was an athletics team member for four years and represented PolyU in eight running races. Meanwhile, the Physical Education Section of SAO organized a series of workshops helping student-athletes to become more all-round. In my final year, I was selected to be the Team Working Group Vice Chairman and Editorial Board member of the Sports Team Newsletter. Learning how to organize activities, communicate and conduct meetings has definitely benefited me enormously.

The most unforgettable activities I have joined in PolyU are a 7-day Outward Bound Training Course, the Adventure-based Training Camp, the Leadership and Competence for Success Programme and the Mental Health Caring Project. Through these, I have learned that thinking positively is key to being psychologically healthy. Difficulties or adverse situations are usually frightening things outside our comfort zone. Yet, when we face these challenges, they present opportunities for us to learn and grow. Challenges actually make my life more adventurous, enjoyable, colourful, meaningful and successful.

In the past three years, I found a good balance between my studies and co-curricular activities. Apart from my studies, I participated in numerous personal development programmes, Complementary Studies Programme and a peer counselling project. As a peer counseling ambassador, I enhanced the attitude and skills necessary to develop harmonious relationships. Also, I learnt how to deal with stress and gained more understanding of myself. Now, I am both physically and psychologically healthier and feel better prepared for my future career.

I believe that university is not just a factory for producing workers. It is also a place to develop our personality, psychological wellness and social responsibility. The undergraduate training in PolyU not only well equipped me as a nurse, but also strengthened my ability to face different challenges after graduation. Through joining different voluntary services, activities, camping and workshops, I gained skills in counselling, programme planning, team building, effective communication and even making friends.

I'm really fond of meeting different people and experiencing their cultures. I also like to do voluntary work in my spare time. Through serving the local community, I feel a sense of belonging as well as a great sense of accomplishment.

The ethics competition inspired me to learn more about business ethics as well as to think deeply about dilemmas in my life. This encouraged me to equip myself right now to face future challenges in the business world.

Also, as university students, we should have the social responsibility to help people in need. It is so easy for us to take what we have for granted. Participating in voluntary work demonstrated that “lives affect lives”. Life becomes more fruitful and meaningful with this knowledge.

PolyU’s well-rounded education has given me a chance to acquire a firm foundation in my field of study, and also helped me to develop other competencies. One invaluable experience was bridge building on the Mainland. I experienced rural life and applied the land surveying skills learnt in class. This project not only helped the villagers, but enhanced my interpersonal skills and broadened my horizons. I want to learn more in the future in order to serve the community.

To know that my time and ef for t have brought happiness to someone else’s life is the greatest happiness in the world. When I serve other people, I am always surprised to discover what great happiness can be created by the small effort I put in. Organizing community services is a big challenge. Together with my fellow committee members in Zonta Club, we created so many memorable moments with elderly people and disabled children. These experiences taught me to believe in our ability to make things happen.

During my university life, I have joined a number of community services. Those experiences have given me great personal development and learning opportunities. In particular, I learned how to nurture positive associations with others and meet their needs properly. My awareness of social responsibility has been enhanced, which in turn has motivated me to pursue more social service opportunities. In future, I hope that I can apply my professional knowledge to help others and inspire and motivate more students to make contributions to society.

I was glad to gain an internship with a media company in New York. As an accounting intern, I had to handle a Sichuan earthquake donation project with the local employees. I learned how to manage a project under pressure and communicate with people of different cultures and backgrounds. Working in the USA has definitely broadened my horizons and given me valuable insights into international businesses; not to mention enabling me to obtain my dream job, despite the current unstable economy.

This meant I could apply my professional knowledge to the workplace. The internship has enhanced my competencies in terms of communication, time management and stress management. Also, through working abroad, I not only learnt to appreciate cultural diversity, but also how to adapt myself to a different working and living environment.

Last summer I worked as an Administrative Officer Intern in the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office of the HKSAR in Toronto. I helped organize events such as Dragon Boat Festival promoting Hong Kong to Toronto, meeting different executives and directors in the process. Finally, I helped out writing speeches, media releases and other news releases. These experiences taught me about government work, Canadian culture and also put my own learning into practice. I treasure this opportunity since it has been essential for my future career.

From the time I started my journey in Hong Kong at PolyU, I found that there were so many opportunities worth pursuing. During the fleeting three years, I participated in the Hall Choirs, the Debating Team, competitions, community service, summer placement and an academic exchange to Cornell University. I feel honored to have received scholarships from PolyU, HSBC and HKSAR Government. All these could not have been achieved without the help from all my instructors and classmates, and nurture from PolyU, which I look upon as my second home.

I feel honored to be selected as a student star again. I think a sense of aesthetic is important since the ability to investigate beautiful things means you will be more sensitive to happiness. I was lucky enough to get a small talent from God so that now I can work for a leading advertising agency with many interesting people. And, when I am really sad, I can express myself through painting which is a healthy and satisfying pastime.

Thanks to PolyU for giving me such a valuable platform to enrich my interest in the arts, especially music. As the Internal Vice President of PolyU Choir, I organised a performance for an audience of more than 500. Outside campus, the exchange opportunity in Australia also broadened my horizons in cultural experience, architecture and the performing arts. Finally, being a member of Hong Kong Young Friends 2009 and the MC of its closing ceremony provided different perspectives of aesthetic development in Hong Kong.

Due to my interests in culture and languages, I have participated in workshops and programs which strengthened my appreciation of various cultures, improved my communication skills and developed my appreciation of art, literature and architecture. I was also honored to be the General Secretary of the Fine Art Society, helping to organize painting classes and an orientation program as well as designing and making souvenirs by myself. Encouraging other students to participate in these extra-curricular activities gave me great satisfaction.

My horizons have been broadened greatly from studying in PolyU. Many opportunities such as exchange study, study tour, mentor caring program, leadership training camp and exhibitions, enriched my experience. While abroad, I liked writing about my travels and observations. Back at PolyU playing music has re-entered my life. I studied piano for four years as a child but I gave it up when I started middle school. At PolyU, I have found that I really enjoy it again; it is the perfect way to relax.

In my first year, I attended a summer course in the University of California, and joined an exchange programme in the University of Bradford, UK, in Year Two. That summer, I took part in the WIE programme working as an intern in the Mediterranean Shipping Company (Hong Kong) Ltd.. I was awarded the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship in recognition of my achievements in the final year. I believe these experiences will help me stand out in the recession.

Studying at PolyU was a fruit ful and valuable experience. I have participated in different extra-curr icular activ i ties and complementar y study programmes. I served as a committee member for the Hall Students’ Association and gained a lot of friends through organizing different activities. I joined the exchange programme which enhanced my whole person development. It is important to maintain a balance between academic studies and extra-curricular activities and it is also very important for students to enjoy their university life as I did.

At one of the first lectures I attended at PolyU, a senior professor told us “How university students are distinguished is by the analytical minds they have”. That statement motivated me and thanks to the academic freedom and diversity that PolyU provides, I was able to train my analytical abilities not only through lectures or tutorials but also various team projects and exchange programs. What I have learned in PolyU will definitely turn out to be one of my most valuable assets.

I sincerely thank PolyU for offering unlimited golden opportunities for learning. Through participating in an overseas placement in Australia, my view has become more global and mature. I also participated in different volunteering ranging from sports competitions to community-based social projects allowing me to contribute my professional knowledge and skills to the community. These experiences were inspiring, fruitful and memorable. I am sure that every PolyU student can achieve life-long learning in pursuit of a brilliant future.
