Laura Story comes to AgrifairHosting a Christian music concert on Agrifair’s Sunday evening has become a staple event and proven to be very successful.

“Our main stage concerts begin at approximately  9 p.m.  and take place in a grassy field,” says Pamela Brenner,  General Manager of the Abbotsford Agrifair. “The venue is lovely at that time of the evening. People bring blankets and lawn chairs, sitting under the stars enjoying awesome entertainment.”

Brenner, credits the Agrifair’s two strong partners – Columbia Cabinets and Countertops, and Fraserway RV – which have allowed the fair to wrangle up even bigger performers like Christian music sensation Laura Story.

With a Billboard Music Award, a Grammy and a few Dove Awards (Christian music awards) Laura Story is sure to bring a high-calibre of musical talent and expertise to the main stage.

Her single Blessings  became her first to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Songs chart

combination of new and old songs, laughter and maybe a few tears, but overall, a wonderful time of singing and storytelling and making much of God’s faithfulness in our lives.”

As for whether or not Story will get to enjoy the full Agrifair experience with her family?

“We have never been so we are hoping to get there early enough to enjoy the festival,” she says. “We are so excited to get to come!”

Opening for Laura Story is Joel Reimer, the winner PRAISE 106.5 Local Music Search contest, as well as Awake O Sleeper, a local band from Chilliwack.

Friday  evening will be the finals for the Valley Voices Vocal Competition, which has been running at Agrifair for a number of years, and Saturday  evening is “Dreams - North America’s No. 1 Tribute to Fleetwood Mac”.

Each show is included in gate admission. For a full list of pricing and more information, visit agrifair.ca

and eventually went on to win the 2011  Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song. She released her next album Great God Who Saves  in 2013, which also charted on the Billboard Heatseekers Album chart.

After years of song writing, Story’s message has remained consistent: talking about how God’s promises intersect with the daily grind of our lives. However, Christians and non-Christians alike will be able to find something they can relate to.

“A lot of my songs are about the trials our family has walked through with my husband’s health issues and ensuing disabilities, as they have greatly affected our lives as well as our faith,” says Story, “but the main message of my songs is hope, that God is real and close to us no matter what we are walking through in life and has a purpose for every chapter of our story.”

Story says she loves meeting new people and encourages anyone to come.

“Our events are always a healthy

Florals, graphics, polka dots and stripes are all the rage this summer in fun, funky looks that make summer sizzle.

Choose one boldly patterned item to be your standout piece, such as a mini dress or a flowy design with a handkerchief hemline.

Or maybe your choice will be a pair of casual loose pants or, for the guys, a tailored shirt under a fitted blazer.

Let that piece take centre stage and add an accessory or two – a uniquely designed brace-let, a cool pair of shades or some hip strappy sandals – to complete the look.

The Farmer and the Foodie

the Crystal Gala ladies.

Sixteen years ago, this ambitious group of Abbotsford women felt a call to “raise a little money” for much needed equipment at our local hos-pital. Countless hours of volunteer labour and 16 swanky galas later, they have donated an astounding $1.8 mil-lion dollars to the now-named Crystal Gala Breast Health Unit, providing two state-of-the-art digital mammography machines.

Should I, or my loved ones, ever require the Breast Clinic services, thankfully we have access to some of the best equipment offered in B.C. Gala La-dies, many thanks for contributing to our community in such a meaningful and long-last-ing way.

FAVOURITE FARM MARKET

THE ABBOTSFORD NEWS

A-LISTWINNER

2014

A number of people recently raved about Dorothy’s delicious coffee cake and it didn’t take me long to pry the recipe out of her flour-dusted hands. Dorothy Dyck, charter member of Ab-botsford’s wildly successful Crystal Gala organizing committee has a win-ning recipe, and the speed at which it disappeared when I brought it to the market for photographs validated everyone’s claims.

Lepp Farm Market is so honoured to be able to partner with the Crystal Gala, in more ways than just sharing a recipe. For the last 4 years, the Gala has auctioned off a private cook-ing class at Lepp Farm Market, with instruction donated by Mission’s Chef Dez, dessert creations by the much-missed Tina Bacon, and later Sue Wiebe, Mt. Lehman Winery’s fabulous wines, and limo services courtesy of

Dorothy’s Summer Fruit Cream Cheese Coffee CakePROVIDED BY LEPP FARM MARKET

This easy but elegant coffee cake with a cream cheese filling and fruit topping would be equally delicious with any of summer’s juicy fruits or berries. The tangy cream cheese filling could be enhanced by adding a dollop of whip cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce on the top; a dessert fit for your most special guests.

INGREDIENTS:2 1/4 cups flour

3/4 cup sugar

3/4 cup butter

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp Salt

1 egg

3/4 cup sour cream if the egg is small, increase sour cream to 1 cup

2 cups approximately of fruit of your choice - berries, peaches, diced apricots, plums or pears

CREAM CHEESE FILLING:8 oz cream cheese 1/4 cup sugar1 tsp vanilla extract or almond

flavouring OR 1 tbsp of your favourite liqueur that complements the fruit ie: amaretto with pitted cherries or pears, limoncello with raspberries, brandy with plums

Slivered almonds (optional)

DIRECTIONS:Mix the flour, sugar and butter into a fine crumb and set aside 1 cup for crumb topping. This can be done with

your hands, a pastry blender, food processor or right in your mixer if the butter is still fairly firm. Add all remaining ingredients and mix until combined. The batter will be fairly thick and may still have small pieces of butter visible. Spread into a greased springform pan. Make sure you spread up the sides just a bit to hold the cream cheese filling. Beat cream cheese and sugar together until creamy, add flavouring of choice. Spread overtop of the batter, to within one inch of the pan. Sprinkle with fruit. Top with the crumbs and slivered almonds (if using) Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45-55 minutes.

To make this even more elegant, served drizzled with a sauce that complements the fruit. Can you imagine how delicious pears would be topped with a warm caramel sauce? Oh yum!
