Every summer, youth learn how to work in committees, elect their owngovernment and learn how to set up and run a co-operative busi-ness. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

20132013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDESUMMER CAMP GUIDE

BY MARK WEBERRed Deer Express

When summer arrives and school is

out, youngsters have the time to check out

other ways to fi ll their days and that can

include a variety of camp options.

According to the Alberta Camping As-

sociation of Alberta (ACA), Central Al-

berta includes all kinds of summer camps,

geared towards those with a passion for

dance, a penchant for horseback riding

or those who want to spend time learn-

ing about the Bible while still enjoying a

host of recreational opportunities. There

are also special needs camps and City day

camps as well.

Camps can be found in all kinds of at-

tractive places as well, from locations near

Sylvan Lake to the foothills around Rocky

Mountain House and Nordegg.

According to the ACA, there are steps

to choosing a perfect camp for your child.

Explore the information available through

the Association’s web site.

The ACA offers a camper’s worksheet

that is helpful in making sure both parent

and child are satisfi ed with the camp selec-

tion. There is also a tab called ‘fi nd a camp’

which lists areas of interest.

There is also an accreditation checklist

which covers topics from camp leader-

ship credentials and leaders’ training and

orientation to things to consider when it

comes to a camp’s site, facilities and equip-

ment and protocol when it comes to camp

health care, medical services and fi rst aid.

Another issue tackled on the ACA web

site relates to concerns over homesickness.

According to the ACA, many campers

feel a sense of missing home at some point

during their stay, but most homesickness

is overcome after the fi rst few days.

There are many tips on how to prepare

your child for the camp experience and

avoid homesickness. These include telling

kids what they will expect when they get

to camp, involving the child in selecting

the camp and sparking interest in children

about the activities available at camp be-

fore going to camp is a good idea as well.

Also, if a child is prone to homesickness,

picking a camp that is shorter in length is

essential. Some camps, for example Cub

Scouts, are two nights long.

According to the ACA, most of the time,

campers just need someone to sit with and

talk to about how they are feeling.

As for what not to do, the ACA recom-

mends avoiding making comments about

your own anxiety such as ‘I hope you’ll be

okay’ or ‘What will I do without you’.

They should also not say “Call me and I

will pick you up” and if they do, they need

to be prepared to do so.

With those concerns considered, parents

should know that once they register with

the camp of their choice they should have

regular contact from that point on, receiv-

ing “A warm welcome or confi rmation

package, including confi rmation of dates,

prices, equipment needed, cancellation

policies, and other necessary camp infor-

mation.”

For more about all things related to the

summer camp experience, check out www.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

20132013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDESUMMER CAMP GUIDEOne of the most exciting parts of our

childhood is summer camps. The kids fi nd

this as one of the best options of being

outdoors away from home with some of

their best friends and a great opportunity

to mingle, have fun with the kids of their

age and make new friends. But as far as

the kids are concerned the right of select-

ing the best summer camp rests with the

parents. Some of them are as follows:

DAY CAMPS OR DAY AND NIGHT CAMPS

First it is essential for the parents to

understand whether they are intending to

move to a day or an overnight camp. Day

camps offer the activities to the kids which

are spread throughout the day and in the

night the children can get back home.

On the other hand, overnight camps are

camps wherein the kids would stay at the

camps throughout the day as well as in the

night.

It would be preferable to send the kids

for the fi rst time to a day camp so that they

could be aware of the camp environment

and then the second or the third time when

the kids go they can go overnight. Hence

it is essential that the kids are sent to an

overnight camp only once they are aware

about the basics of the camp life.

ACADEMIC OR SCHOLARLY CAMPS

These camps are conducted with an edu-

cational focus in mind, they are conducted

to teach children based on different and in-

teresting strategies.

It teaches the kids from a different per-

spective than the usual medium of class-

room teaching.

These camps have proven to be really

benefi cial to the kids from the curriculum

point of view and kids enjoy these camps

though they have an educational motive

hidden in them.

ADVENTUROUS CAMPS

Many of the summer camps have adven-

ture camps as their tag line in their adver-

tisements.

The adventurous camps offer the kids

with an opportunity of mountain trekking,

rock climbing but in addition to this they

allow kids to learn specifi c things. These

adventure camps can be more expensive

than the other options of summer camps.

ART CAMPS

These camps are one of the best options

to steer the creativity within your chil-

dren. However they not only offer creative

programs but they do have other enjoyable

programs for the kids.

Celebrating over 50 years of camping, Camp Maskepetoon was named after a Cree Indian Chief who embraced Christianity and struggled to bring peace and forgiveness to the warring tribes, missionaries and settlers in the region. Camp Maskepetoon has 11 heated, natural log cabins, main lodge and 250 acres on the Northwest shore of Pigeon Lake. Campers participate in many activities such as archery, canoeing, crafts, sports, devotions, waterfront, campfires and many surprises! SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

20132013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDESUMMER CAMP GUIDE

BY ERIN FAWCETTRed Deer Express

Although heading a considerable distance away from

home for summer camp may be perfectly suitable for

many kids, other aren’t quite ready to take that step.

That’s where the option of checking out day camps and

other camp opportunities right here in Red Deer comes in.

These offer plenty of fun and learning for kids with the

comfort factor of knowing home is nearby.

After all, there are a number of things to keep in mind

when fi guring out if your child is okay with setting off

away from home for a week of adventure.

Are they comfortable in unfamiliar settings?

When asked about their interest in leaving the City for

summer camp, do they light up or shy away from the sub-

ject?

Something else to consider is does your son or daughter

make new friends easily? Do they have problems speaking

up about concerns that may arise?

If it turns out that some of these are signifi cant issues,

enjoying a camp experience near home may be the best

option for a slice of summer time fun.

There is much to explore in Red Deer including a slate

of day camps and other kid-focused adventures and activi-

ties through the City of Red Deer at the Collicutt Centre,

the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Fort Normandeau and Red

Deer College.

For one, Artstrek at Red Deer College is geared to youth

with a love of theatre.

The camp run from July 7-27, and are designed for those

ages 13 to 18.

Artstrek is a summer school for teens that explores the

exciting world of theatre and theatre production.

Over the course of a week in residence at RDC, Art-

strek students discover acting, voice, movement, direct-

ing, sound/music, design, creation and collaboration with

some of Alberta’s fi nest theatre professionals and educa-

tors. Registration opens April 2.

Campers explore all facets of the theatre world from

acting and music to movement.

For those with a love of music, there is ‘Adventures in

Summer Music’ Aug. 19-23 and is aimed at those ages 10

to 15.

Each day campers will enjoy full band rehearsals, sec-

tional rehearsals, master classes, music options, presenta-

tions and supervised recreational activities. There is also

MusiCamp Alberta which runs from July 28 to Aug. 17 and

is for those ages 10 and up.

For more information about camps and events in Red

Deer, call continuing education at RDC at 403-356-4900, the

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

20132013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDESUMMER CAMP GUIDEBY ACE ABBEY

When the time for summer camp rolls

around parents everywhere start plan-

ning.

As soon as you get the summer camp

packing list you probably want to get start-

ed.

THE NECESSITIES:

Clothing is one of the most important

things you can send with your child to

summer camp.

The amount that you send with them

should be proportional to the amount of

time they are going to stay. Your kids prob-

ably aren’t going to be taking care of laun-

dry while they are away.

READ THE LITERATURE:

A summer camp sends parents a list of

things that each camper needs to bring

along with them.

This includes things like swim suits,

jackets, even hiking boots. You don’t want

your child to be the only one outside with-

out a coat or having to stay indoors be-

cause they don’t have an umbrella.

One way to make sure you don’t forget

anything is to check items off the litera-

ture as you pack it. You won’t skip or forget

anything that way.

TALK TO YOUR CHILD:

When kids are away from home there are

some things they like to keep with them. It

might make them feel more comfortable.

They may want to bring along a journal, a

camera, or even a favourite stuffed animal.

If it isn’t going to hinder any of the activi-

ties while they are away feel free to let you

child bring some of their own items with

them to summer camp.

SEND CARE PACKAGES:

Remember that you can always send

care packages. If you child has a favourite

food or treat you can be sure that sending

it to them would be a real special event.

Make sure that you read all of the policies

that the facility offers to make sure that

you are sending acceptable items. Even if

you can’t send homemade treats you can

include photos or a special book.

Even more important than a care pack-

age is a letter from home. Just a short note

or card would mean a lot. While shopping

for all of the things they will need on the

list you can pick up some cute cards or sta-

tionary to help remind you to write. You

can also pack some stamps, envelopes, and

paper for your kids as well to make sure

you hear from them.

Packing all the essentials for summer camp

20132013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDESUMMER CAMP GUIDEBY JIMMY SORENSEN

As the summer season approaches, each

parent has the same thought in mind. They

all are in the same boat questioning how

they can keep their kids entertained, ener-

getic, out of trouble, and productively ac-

tive for part of the summer if not the entire

summer.

As parents, this is a good option to keep

your teens occupied during the summer

break, but yet be sure they are going to en-

joy on their own.

SUMMER CAMPS

One good option for teens to pass their

summer season successfully as they enjoy

themselves, plus make friends is to attend

a summer kids’ camps.

There are several different summer pro-

grams for children planned by various or-

ganizations in several categories of inter-

est.

These camps can be of two type -- sum-

mer day camps or overnight camps.

Depending on your kid’s interest, you

can select from the several options avail-

able in your region.

INVOLVE KIDS IN THE SELECTION

Do you research before the summer ap-

proaches, and assure you keep your kids

involved in the process each step of the

way?

Their input is crucial as you want

them to be satisfi ed with their time spent

through the summer and never feel just

like they are forced into something they

don’t want to do.

Talk to your kids and fi nd out they’re

thinking and also what they wish to do.

Would they love to learn a new skill? In

what area or subject are they excited

about?

Do they wish to attend recreation-ori-

ented summer day camps? Or do they even

want to invest more time and push their

skills additionally by participating over-

night camps?

Be seated with your kids and discuss

the various options with them, keeping in

mind what they really want out of their

summer experience.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER & KEEP IN MIND

Keeping a few things in mind after you

have identifi ed what your child wants out

of the summer camps that you research,

will make for a successful and productive

summer experience for all.

• Be sure that the camp you fi nalize has

a tuned mix of learning and fun experienc-

es, plus that your child doesn’t feel like it is

all work and no play.

• Ask about the in-house arrangements

as well as amenities along with the fea-

tures that the camps offer. You wish your

children to be as comfortable as they can

be while away from home.

• If your children have any special needs,

then check with the camps if they can be

accommodated plus taken care of in a

proper manner.

• Check about the sleeping arrangments

if you prefer an overnight camp. Be sure

that the facilities are apt as well as that

safety will be prioritized.

• Stay on top of things by checking the

sign up deadlines.

Certain camps fi ll up quite fast and you

do not want your child to miss out on a

good opportunity due to a missed deadline.

• Summer programs for children can be

costly.

Talk about the fi nancial element with

your teens.

It will also teach them the value of mon-

ey, and as well inquire about fi nancial as-

sistance available.

Non-profi t camps can even be a good al-

ternative if required.

• Determine where the location will be

of the camp you and your children select.

Make sure that medical treatment is prop-

er as well.

Doing all of your research properly, dis-

cussing options and interests with your

kids, and even keeping a few minor specif-

ics in your mind, will come in handy while

choosing summer activities for your teens

and ensure that you are all happy.

It becomes a crucial decision and even

taking care of what process you follow will

make things a lot simpler for both you as

well as your kids.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

20132013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDESUMMER CAMP GUIDEBY ALOYSIUS AUCOIN

If school’s out and your kids are looking

forward to a few months off, explore the

benefi ts of summer camp. While you may

have a few reservations at fi rst, the end re-

sult is sure to be a positive experience for

your child.

Whether you want your kids to get out

and explore nature, or simply allow them

to get a change of scenery, a summer camp

is an ideal choice. Examine a few great rea-

sons why your child should do something

different while school’s out:

MAKE NEW FRIENDS

When your child is at summer camp, it’s

essential that he or she gets out of their

comfort zone and makes new friends.

Your kid is in a place where he or she

is meeting new children from all over. In

such an unfamiliar environment, they may

fi nd that they enjoy talking to other kids

of different backgrounds, and might even

make a few new friends.

EXPERIENCE NATURE

Some children who live in the city have

never been to a park or on a camping trip.

That’s why going to summer camp can be a

life-changing experience.

There will be many things to do, such as

exploring the water at the lakes, climbing

trees, checking out butterfl ies-- you name

it.

Bottom line, your kids will be outdoors

and immersed in Mother Nature for a few

weeks.

TRY NEW ACTIVITIES

If your kids are more inclined to simply

stay in the house and play video games, get-

ting away can really give them a jolt. Many

kids today don’t even understand what it’s

like to play outside and run around. There-

fore, when they’re gone for a few weeks

and have no choice but to try new activi-

ties, they may be in for a shock. Oftentimes

it’s a good shock, and your kids might want

to get out and do different things more of-

ten.

CONQUER A FEW FEARS

Summer camp not only allows kids to

try new things, but they may even face a

few fears. If your child is extremely shy or

doesn’t like challenges, being around other

kids could help. In addition, there may be

an activity that your child has shied away

from in the past, yet overcomes while away.

In the end, your child may come back hap-

pier and more confi dent.

GET A CHANGE IN SCENERY

Your kids may feel like their life in the

city is the center of the universe. However,

when placed in a situation where they have

no choice but embrace their environment,

they may be amazed to fi nd that they have

an interest in nature. Your child may fi nd

that he or she enjoys watching birds or in-

sects, or may be in awe of all the natural

beauty around them. A change in scenery

can really open their eyes to the world.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

20132013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDESUMMER CAMP GUIDEBY ANTOINETTE AYANA

Some kids love the idea of summer camp,

while others would rather watch television

all day. If you are having trouble motivat-

ing your child to go, there are things you

can do to make it more appealing.

While some kids will relish the idea of

spending a few weeks at a summer camp,

canoeing, swimming, and meeting new

children, there are those that will refuse.

So how do you get reluctant children to

look forward to getting out of the house

for their summer vacation? Rather than

thrusting them into a random location

and allowing a counselor to dictate how

they will spend their free time, try to fi nd

a place that can offer something that will

keep them interested and even excited.

Few parents think to ask their kids

about what kind of summer camp that

they would like to attend. While some chil-

dren may be apathetic at the idea, you may

be surprised by a positive reaction. Before

asking them about their opinion, it’s im-

portant to have narrowed down possible

locations so that no one is disappointed by

budget, distance, or other potential restric-

tions. Choose several options in the area

and allow your children to look through

the web site or brochures. Even if you can

only fi nd two places, giving them some

voice in the decision will likely spark some

enthusiasm and less resistance to the idea.

If they still refuse, have them provide you

with some of their own suggestions of

ways to spend their vacation. While you’re

likely to get the answer, ‘sit in front of the

television or computer,’ they may surprise

you and suddenly express an interest in

volunteer work or learning a new skill.

Another great motivator to get kids ex-

cited about summer camp rather than

dreading being torn away from their com-

puter or video games is to include their

friends. One of their pals may already be

attending, so it is a good idea to keep in the

loop with other parents in order to com-

pare your options and to encourage kids

to go together. You can also suggest that

they invite friends to attend with them if

possible. Having a close friend takes away

the fear of several weeks of isolation from

the familiar. It also means that you’ll have

another set of parents to help back you up

on the plans in case of any last minute cold

feet.

If your child has goals, summer camp is

a great time to explore them and learn new

skills. Whether it’s sports, music, acting,

or something more academic, there are

many camps that specialize in particular

areas. A child fascinated by marine biology

would be much more interested in spend-

ing their vacation time at an aquarium

learning about sea life rather than practic-

ing archery in the woods. Many locations

will supply the kids with all of the mate-

rial necessary such as books, musical in-

struments, or other necessary tools, which

means it is a much cheaper initial invest-

ment than outright purchasing these ma-

terials yourself along with private lessons.

Take the time to read about the activities

on offer and go over them with your kids.
