Goldeye Centre near Nordegg, AB • Ph: (780) 991-4620 • www.acca.coopSummer camp is a time for making new friends and is the place where youth discover their hidden talents. Those who have attended the ACCA Co-operative Youth Leadership Program, (now going into their 55th year) will tell you that it was one of their most memorable and life-changing experiences. Held at Goldeye Centre near Nordegg, the serene foothills location provides a beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains. wWe aim to develop leadership skills and self-confidence in youth so they can return to their communities and get involved. Every summer, youth learn how to work in committees, elect their owngovernment and learn how to set up and run a co-operative business. They also develop communication and public speaking skills and expand their knowledge of the agriculture industry and the benefits of membership in co-operatives. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

BY MARK WEBERRed Deer Express

Summer offers youngsters a host of fun-

fi lled days packed with recreation, and

making the season all the more complete

is time spent at camp. No matter what kids

are interested in, there is likely a local

camp that would suit them perfectly.

Central Alberta includes all kinds of

camps, geared towards those with a pas-

sion for dance, a penchant for horseback

riding or those who want to spend time

learning about the Bible while still enjoy-

ing a host of recreational opportunities.

There are also camps suited to those

with a range of sporting sensibilities

where swimming, canoeing, wall-climbing

and the wonders of the outdoors are ex-

plored.

Camps can be found in all kinds of at-

tractive settings as well, from locations

near Sylvan Lake to the foothills around

Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg.

Choosing a camp may seem like an over-

whelming venture considering the multi-

tude of choices, but the Alberta Camping

Association of Alberta (ACA) provides

tools to narrow down the possibilities.

For those who would prefer to go the day

camp route, there are also choices. This

type of camp may be viewed as an intro-

ductory stage to camping at a high comfort

level. According to the ACA, there are key

steps to choosing a perfect camp for your

child.

Explore the information available

through the Association’s web site.

Folks can read about the organization

which “Has made its mandate an assur-

ance of quality to the public through its

program of accreditation and guidelines

for operations.

First off, take the time to read about

what each camp has to offer.

The ACA offers a camper’s worksheet

that is helpful in making sure both parent

and child are satisfi ed with the selection as

well. There is also an excellent tab on the

web site called ‘fi nd a camp’ which lists ar-

eas of interest ranging form baseball, bik-

ing and kayaking to cycling, sailing, back-

packing and tennis.

Those searching for the best camp can

check off interests and the program fi nds

camps that specialize in those areas.

Once you’ve settled on a possible camp

choice, it’s a good idea to contact camp

offi ces to ask about session lengths, start-

ing dates and what is included in the fee.

Sample questions, according to the ACA,

run the gamut from ‘what is your camp’s

philosophy’ and ‘what is your ratio of

campers to staff’ to ‘what are the ages of

your counselors’ and ‘what percentage of

campers return every year.’

The ACA recommends counselors be

a minimum age of 17. Another question

might be ‘What provisions are made for

campers with special needs?’

According to the ACA, once you register

with the camp of your choice you should

have regular contact from that point on,

receiving “A warm welcome or confi rma-

tion package, including confi rmation of

dates, prices, equipment needed, cancel-

lation policies, and other necessary camp

information.

Students work at their own pace, but under the guidance and supervision of teachers who provideassistance when needed. Taking a summer course provides students the opportunity to upgrade their marks in a course they didn’t do well in, or it can help reduce their course load in September. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

BY DEBORAH SHELTON

Summertime isn’t just about

getting dirty, staying up all

night, playing in the rain, and

going off to camp – it’s about

meeting new people. Follow

these tips to turn your vaca-

tion acquaintances into lifelong

friends.

1. Summer memory book

Make the summer last forev-

er by preserving memories in

a special book. Fill the plastic

sleeves of a photo album with

photos, ticket stubs, sections of

road maps from summer trips,

and other mementos. When

you’re fi nished, exchange

memory books with your clos-

est summer buddy.

2. Picture postcards

Keep in touch with vacation

friends by sending picture post-

cards. Scan summer photos

and print them on cardstock

paper, four per page. Use scis-

sors to cut individual cards.

On the blank side, include your

friend’s address, your return

address, and a postage stamp.

Don’t forget to write a cool mes-

sage.

3. Pen pal club

Start your own pen pal club.

Swap addresses with your new

friends and make a commit-

ment to keep in touch. Be cre-

ative, don’t limit yourself to

writing letters. Send an inex-

pensive gift every so often, or

an audiotape letter. Send lists

of your favourite things. For

instance, one month send your

pen pals a list of your 20 favou-

rite movies, and then compare

your lists.

No matter how you decide to

keep in touch, don’t let summer

friendships end when summer

ends.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

BY ANTOINETTE AYANA

Some kids love the idea of summer camp,

while others would rather loaf around and

watch television. If you are having trou-

ble motivating your child to go, there are

things you can do to make it appealing.

While some kids will relish the idea of

spending a few weeks at a camp, canoe-

ing, swimming and meeting new children,

there are those that will refuse until you

drag their clinging fi ngers from your car.

So how do you get children to look forward

to getting out of the house for their three-

month vacation?

Rather than thrusting them into a ran-

dom location and allowing a counselor to

dictate how they will spend their free time,

try to fi nd a place that can offer something

unique that will keep them interested and

even excited.

Few parents think to ask their kids

about what kind of camp they would like

to attend. While some children may be apa-

thetic or upset at the idea, you may be sur-

prised by a positive reaction.

Before asking their opinion, it’s impor-

tant to have narrowed down possible loca-

tions so that no one is disappointed by bud-

get, distance or other restrictions. Choose

options in the area and allow your children

to look through the web site or brochures.

Even if you can only fi nd two places, giv-

ing them some voice in the decision will

spark some enthusiasm and less resistance

to the idea. If they still refuse, have them

provide you their own suggestions of ways

to spend their vacation. While you’re likely

to get the answer, “Sit in front of the televi-

sion or computer”, they may surprise you

and express an interest in volunteer work

or learning a new skill.

Another motivator to get kids excited

about camp rather than dreading being

torn away from their computer or video

games is to include their friends.

One of their pals may already be attend-

ing, so it is a good idea to keep in the loop

with other parents in order to compare op-

tions and to encourage kids to go together.

You can also suggest they invite friends

to attend with them if possible. Having a

close friend takes away the fear of weeks

of isolation from the familiar. It also means

you’ll have another set of parents to help

back you up on the plans in case of any last

minute cold feet.

If your child has goals, camp is a great

time to explore them and learn new skills.

Whether it’s sports, music, acting or some-

thing more academic, there are camps that

specialize in particular areas.

A child fascinated by marine biology

would be much more interested in spend-

ing their vacation time at an aquarium

learning about sea life rather than practic-

ing archery in the woods. Many locations

will supply the kids with all of the mate-

rial necessary such as books, musical in-

struments or other necessary tools, which

means it is a much cheaper initial invest-

ment than outright purchasing these ma-

terials yourself along with private lessons.

Take the time to read about the activities

on offer and go over them with your kids.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

BY JENNA SWANRed Deer Express

Registration for Exelta Gymnastics Club

summer camps will open April 23rd.

Exelta will be hosting a number of ac-

tion and athletic-packed camps this year

for gymnasts and beginners alike.

Each camp is run by certifi ed gymnas-

tics instructors with years of experience

in providing the highest standard of excel-

lence in attitude and achievement.

With camps beginning for those as young

as one and a half to three years old, which

they will participate in with a parent, these

preschool camps are one-hour classes of

fun. “Gymnastics and our camps are great

because it keeps kids active and really gets

them moving,” said Jessica Hartel, sum-

mer camp coordinator for Exelta.

“It teaches them to work on their bal-

ance, fl exibility, coordination and strength

which will carry over into other activities

they may play or be involved with.”

For those with children ages three and

four, a camp will be offered to help them

begin their journey as a gymnast.

Kids ages four to eight can register for

the ‘Gym Flippers’ morning or afternoon

class. This hour and half in the gym will

help gymnasts to develop their skills.

Those looking to mix up their days with

more than just gymnastics fun can sign up

for the half day camps. “When they arrive

in the morning they will play a light game

and do some stretches to ensure they are

nice and limber,” said Hartel. “From there

they will begin to do the different circuits

we have set up in the gym to work through

and the coaches will be there to demon-

strate and help them.”

Gymnasts ages four to eight are eligi-

ble for this camp, which includes either a

morning or afternoon of gymnastics, rock

climbing, outdoor games, crafts, and more.

Full-day camps are offered for children

ages fi ve to eight and nine to 13. Hartel ex-

plains parents love the full and half days

because “They’re busy all day and they’ll

be tired when they get home.”

Aside from extensive time on the fl oor,

bars, vault, and beam – full-day camp at-

tendees can expect to swim, rock climb,

play outdoor games, and venture to Rotary

Park for a fun-fi lled fi nal day of camp.

Each camp will have their own theme

children may choose to participate in. All

camps are offered every week of summer,

so that parents and their children may

choose a week that works best for them.

Exelta asks campers bring their own

lunches if attending full-day camps, as

BY ACE ABBEY

When the time for summer camp rolls

around parents everywhere start plan-

ning. It takes a while to establish a list of

everything the kids will need while away.

As soon as you get the summer camp

packing list you probably want to get start-

ed. The kids are excited to go and you are

ready for them to enjoy a few weeks away

with friends learning about nature and

participating in outdoor activities. One

way to ensure that they have a great time is

to make sure they have all of the essentials

they will need, plus a few extras.

Clothing is probably one of the most

important things you can send with your

child to summer camp. Obviously they

aren’t going to get very far without enough

shirts, shorts, socks and underwear. The

amount that you send with them should

be proportional to the amount of time they

are going to stay. Your kids probably aren’t

going to be taking care of laundry while

they are away (especially if they don’t do

it at home).

A summer camp sends parents a list of

things that each camper needs to bring

along with them. This includes things like

swimsuits, jackets, even hiking boots. You

don’t want your child to be the only outside

without a coat or having to stay indoors

because they don’t have an umbrella. One

way to make sure you don’t forget any-

thing is to check items off the literature as

you pack it. You won’t skip or forget any-

thing that way.

When kids are away from home there are

some things they like to keep with them. It

might make them feel more comfortable

and enhance their camping experience.

They may want to bring along a journal, a

camera, or even a favourite stuffed animal.

If it isn’t going to hinder any of the activi-

ties while they are away feel free to let your

child bring some of their own items with

them to summer camp.

Remember that you can always send

care packages. If your child has a favourite

food or treat you can be sure that sending

it to them would be a real special event.

Make sure that you read all of the policies

that the facility offers to make sure that

you are sending acceptable items. Even if

you can’t send homemade treats you can

include photos or a special book.

Even more important than a care pack-

age is a simple letter from home. Kids love

to know that you are thinking about them

and even that you miss them. Just a short

note or card would mean a lot. While shop-

ping for all of the things they will need on

the list you can pick up some cute cards or

stationary to help remind you to write. You

can also pack some stamps, envelopes, and

paper for your kids as well to make sure

you hear from them.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

BY ALOYSLUS AUCOIN

If school’s out and your kids are looking

forward to a few months off, explore the

benefi ts of summer camp.

Whether you want your kids to get out

and explore nature, or simply allow them

to get a change of scenery, a summer camp

is an ideal choice. Examine a few reasons

why your child should do something differ-

ent while school’s out:

MAKE NEW FRIENDS

When your child is at summer camp, it’s

essential that he or she gets out of their

comfort zone and makes new friends. Your

kid is in a place where he or she is meeting

new children from all over. In such an un-

familiar environment, they may fi nd that

they enjoy talking to other kids of different

backgrounds, and might even make a few

new friends.

EXPERIENCE NATURE

Some children who live in the city have

never been to a park or on a camping trip.

That’s why going to summer camp can be

a life-changing experience. There will be

many things to do, such as exploring the

water at the lakes, climbing trees, checking

out butterfl ies-- you name it.

Bottom line, your kids will be outdoors

and immersed in Mother Nature for a few

weeks.

TRY NEW ACTIVITIES

If your kids are more inclined to stay

in the house and play video games, get-

ting away can give them a jolt. Many kids

don’t even understand what it’s like to play

outside and run around. Therefore, when

they’re gone for a few weeks and have no

choice but to try new activities, they may

be in for a shock. Oftentimes it’s a good

shock, and your kids might want to get out

and do different things more often.

CONQUER A FEW FEARS

Summer camp not only allows kids to

try new things, but they may even face a

few fears. If your child is extremely shy or

doesn’t like challenges, being around other

kids could help. There may be an activity

your child has shied away from yet over-

comes while away for a few months.

GET A CHANGE IN SCENERY

Your kids may feel like their life in the

City is the centre of the universe. Howev-

er, when placed in a situation where they

have no choice but to embrace their envi-

ronment, they may be amazed to fi nd they

have an interest in nature. Your child may

fi nd he or she enjoys watching birds or in-

sects, or may be in awe of all the beauty

around them.

BY JENNA SWANRed Deer Express

Halkirk’s Circle Square

Ranch has been operating

as a summer camp for chil-

dren and youth since 1978.

The western-style over-

night camp offers a variety

of programs for children

who are aged six -18.

This fast-paced adven-

ture style camp reenacts a

mock western town located

on 320 acres overlooking

the Paintearth Coulee and

Creek of Central Alberta.

Roberta Christianson,

offi ce administrator for

Circle Square Ranch, has

been with the camp for

more than 20 years and re-

members one past director

who explained the camp as,

“Every day is a holiday at

Circle Square Ranch.”

“It’s beautiful here, we’re

up on top of the coulee hill

overlooking Paintearth

Creek with many spruce

trees all around,” explains

Christianson.

“It’s a great place to hike

and trail ride.”

Circle Square Ranch of-

fers a variety of different

camps.

Western Town Camp

is for boys and girls aged

nine-15 that like a chal-

lenge.

The many activities in-

clude horseback riding,

swimming, archery, a high

ropes course, and various

activities in the skate park.

“Many kids who come to

Circle Square for the fi rst

time have never been on

a horse before,” explains

Christianson. “But by the

time they leave they feel

very comfortable with

them.”

An exclusive Western

Town program for boys and

girls ages 14-17 is suited for

older campers who enjoy

adventure and welcome a

challenge.

Campers will enjoy Cir-

cle Square’s fi ve-star horse-

manship program, while

also spending time explor-

ing the Bible through dra-

ma.

If you have a child aged

13-16 who loves horses and

who can bring their own

horse, then Circle Square’s

Rodeo Camp is the ideal lo-

cation for them.

The newest addition to

their camp selection, the

Rodeo Camp, will provide

children the opportunity

to get in touch with their

western side while learn-

ing tips and tricks of the

rodeo.

“It’s different every year

depending on the campers

we get,” said Christianson.

“If there are a lot of kids

who want to practice barrel

racing, rough stock events,

or roping – we will adjust

the camp to what the kids

want to learn and practice

the most.”

For the adrenaline lov-

ing teen boy, the Boys Spe-

cialty BMX Camp offered

at Circle Square is sure to

leave them with a lasting

memory.

At Circle Square’s BMX

Camp boys will get two

hours of skate park prac-

tice a day with skilled in-

structors.

Aside from the BMX

practice, they will also en-

joy most of the other regu-

lar camp activities such as

horseback riding, swim-

ming, high ropes, and ar-

chery.

All campers will par-

ticipate in daily Bible de-

votionals around the camp-

fi re where they will learn

about the Christian faith

from caring and qualifi ed

staff.

For those ages 14 and 15

hoping to get closer to God

this summer, Route 4:13 Co-

Ed Camp may be the best

option.

This two-week program

challenges campers to lean

towards a God-centered

and God-empowered life.

While Route 4:13 is about

more than just encourag-

ing campers to practice

devotion, Christianson ex-

plains that Route 4:13 “Is

about building character in

campers and helping them

to fi nd themselves and fi g-

ure out who they are as a

person.”

Route 4:13 camp hopes

participants will grow in

their relationship with

God, develop their leader-

ship skills, as well as build

on their natural gifts and

abilities.

The name of the camp

comes from the passage,

“I can do everything

through Him who gives me

strength,” Philippians 4:13.

Circle Square Ranch in-

vites campers from Route

4:13 to return next summer

to participate in their four

week Leaders in Training

(LIT) Co-Ed Camp for ages

16 and 17.

Although it is not a re-

quirement for campers to

have completed Route 4:13

before the LIT camp, Chris-

tianson believes it is a great

transitional stepping stone

to bridge campers into the

LIT camp.

LIT camp aims to recog-

nize, develop, and expand

the leadership potential in

young people.

Circle Square states on

their web site that they

hope campers of the Lead-

ers in Training Camp,

“Will be given an edge that

can help them adapt as a

leader in any environment

through skills development

sessions, one-to-one men-

torship, Biblical teaching,

a two-week practicum, and

a service trip to another

Inter-Varsity camp.”

venture with Circle Square

BY JENNA SWANRed Deer Express

Do you remember those

summer days you spent

as a child fl oating on the

lake with nothing but the

sounds of other children’s

laughter and the sweet

sounds of nature in your

ears?

There certainly weren’t

any text messages or face-

book notifi cations buzzing

in your ear to cloud your

head on those days.

Want your child to have

that same summer sensa-

tion that you did?

This blast from the past

camp asks that campers

leave cell phones, iPods,

and electronic games at

home but encourages them

to bring books, guitars, and

ball gloves instead.

President of the Board of

Bar Harbour Camp, Ryan

Koehli explains that Bar

Harbour aims to ensure

that kids are interacting

with one another as much

as possible, which often

leads to developing life long

friends by the time they

leave the camp.

“At the end of the day

Bar Harbour is a refuge

from every day life,” said

Koehli. “We want everyone

to get to know each other

as much as possible so that

by the time they leave they

have new friends and are

part of a community.”

The natural lakeshore

setting of Bar Harbour

Camp will leave lasting

memories in the minds of

the youth who take part in

their annual summer spec-

tacular.

“The lake is a big part of

Bar Harbour. The swim-

ming and the canoeing is a

lot of fun, and with some of

the older kids we will take

them out boating and tub-

ing.”

Located on an unspoiled

100 acre site on the south-

east shore of Buffalo Lake,

next to the Summer Vil-

lage of White Sands in the

County of Stettler – the

camp boasts hot showers

in modern bathrooms, a

large campfi re area, sports

fi elds, an outdoor chapel

and many stunning nature

trails.

With four different

camps for different age

groups, Bar Harbour is

the ideal location for any

youth looking to make new

friends and have a fun week

away from home.

Any child or teenager

aged six -17 is welcome at

the lakeside cabin camp

out.

Campers will share their

cabins with fi ve to nine oth-

er campers depending on

their age group. Each day

of camp, the campers will

participate in new activi-

ties such as swimming, ca-

noeing, sports, crafts, danc-

es, campfi res and archery.

Bar Harbour ensures

that campers are likely to

fi nd and make new friends

as well as encounter many

positive role models in

their camp staff.

One of the camp’s mot-

tos, ‘We include everyone’

comes from the community

feeling that campers expe-

rience while spending time

there.

With Bar Harbour camp

kids who come back con-

secutive years often fi nd fa-

miliar faces in their friends

from last year and the

camp counselors they have

looked up to for a number

of years.

The camp staff is quali-

fi ed and take pride in main-

taining their relationships

with each individual camp-

er.

“Being a counselor at

Bar Harbour was always

exciting when you got to

meet the new campers,”

said Koehli. “A lot of times

one of the people that you

would meet when you got

to the camp on the fi rst day

would end up being one of

your life-long friends.”

Campers are always un-

der direct supervision and

care of the staff members,

with safety being the staff’s

number one concern.

The camp will also en-

sure that your child’s spe-

cial dietary and medical

needs are met and invites

you to contact them to dis-

cuss how they can help to

accommodate those needs.

Bar Harbour maintains

their accreditation from

both the Alberta Camping

Association as well as the

United Church Camping

standards program.

Summer CAMPGuide 2014

Page 12: Special Features - Summer Camp Guide 2014

12 Red Deer Express Wednesday, February 26, 2014SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

Hard to believe that with

freezing temperatures and

snow still under our feet,

we are receiving applica-

tion forms from summer

camps.

Kind of nice though. It’s

the same kind of feeling

I get when I walk past my

favourite clothing store in

February and start to see

the fi rst of their spring col-

lection.

The thought of summer

camp elicits thoughts of

children running carefree

with their friends or wad-

ing in water knee deep, a

refreshing cooling off un-

der the brilliant sun.

But are all children hap-

py campers? For some, the

thought of camp brings

about feelings of anxiety.

For some, even day camp

represents an unfamiliar

bus ride between home and

the camp grounds.

For some, it may mean

having to make new

friends. Other kids live for

camp. They get through the

school year by reminding

themselves of the freedoms

of camp, of rekindling re-

lationships with special

camp buddies and learning

new skills that foster self

confi dence and personal

growth.

The bottom line is to

know your child when se-

lecting a camp environ-

ment. Camp does not have

to be a fair distance from

home, does not have to be

overnight, does not even

have to be sporty.

For younger children,

camp may be the only alter-

native for parents who are

working. Sometimes, the

school or daycare that your

young child attends may of-

fer summer programs too.

As children get a little old-

er, aged six and up, for ex-

ample, parents may choose

a day camp that is quite

varied.

By doing so, they allow

their child to be involved

in many activities – both in

and outdoors – from sport-

sy to artsy so both parent

and child can develop in-

creased awareness of the

child’s interests.

Some children may hate

the heat and prefer to at-

tend an indoor camp that

offers outdoor activities.

Other children love to be

out all day and might feel

cooped up inside. As chil-

dren are even older, you

may want to tailor the

camp to meet your child’s

interests.

There are theatre camps,

arts based camps, gymnas-

tics camps, tennis camps

and baseball camps from

which to choose. The list is

endless.

Aside from considering

your child’s interests, loca-

tion of the camp and their

facilities, whether they are

accredited or not, how fl ex-

ible they are in offering

the hours that you need,

whether or not they offer

the option of transporta-

tion and meals, consider

the ratio of counselor to

camper.

Ideally, there should be

no more than fi ve campers

per counselor in the young-

er age groups and no more

than eight campers per

counselor as the children

get older. Also, ask what

experience and training

the counselors have. Are

they certifi ed in CPR and

fi rst aid?

Camp is not for everyone

and some children may pre-

fer to just hang out at home

the whole summer long.

However, keep in mind

that 10 weeks at home can

be quite long – for both par-

ent and child.

Unless you’re prepared

to fi nd activities to keep

your child out of mischief,

even a few hours of camp a

day can be helpful. Include

your child in the selection

process – many camps have

open houses during the

winter and spring months.

Camp should be a fun place

to be and if it’s not, then ex-

plore other options.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

BY ERIN FAWCETTRed Deer Express

Although heading a considerable dis-

tance away from home for summer camp

may be perfectly suitable for many kids,

other aren’t quite ready to take that big

step.

That’s where the option of checking out

day camps and a range of other camp op-

portunities right here in Red Deer comes

in.

These offer plenty of fun and learning

for kids with the comfort factor of know-

ing home is nearby.

After all, there are a number of things

to keep in mind when fi guring out if your

child is okay with setting off away from

home for a week of adventure.

Are they comfortable in unfamiliar set-

tings?

When asked about their interest in leav-

ing the City for summer camp, do they light

up or do they shy away from the subject?

Something else to consider is does your

son or daughter tend to make new friends

easily?

Do they have problems speaking up

about concerns that may arise?

If it turns out that some of these are

signifi cant issues, enjoying a camp experi-

ence near home may be the best option for

a slice of summer time fun.

There is much to explore in Red Deer in-

cluding a slate of day camps and other kid-

focused adventures and activities through

the City of Red Deer at the Collicutt Cen-

tre, the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Fort

Normandeau and Red Deer College.

For one, Artstrek at Red Deer College is

geared to youth with a love of theatre.

The camp runs from July 6-11, 13-18 and

20-26, and are designed for those ages 13 to

18.

Artstrek is a summer school for teens

that explores the exciting world of theatre

and theatre production.

Over the course of a week in residence

at RDC, Artstrek students discover acting,

voice, movement, directing, sound/music,

design, creation and collaboration with

some of Alberta’s fi nest theatre profes-

sionals and educators.

Registration opens April 1.

Campers explore all facets of the theatre

world from acting and music to movement.

For those with a love of music, there is

‘Adventures in Summer Music’ Aug. 18-22

and is aimed at those ages nine to 14. Each

day campers will enjoy full band rehears-

als, sectional rehearsals, master classes,

music options, presentations and super-

vised recreational activities.

There is also MusiCamp Alberta which

runs from July 27 to Aug. 16 and is for

those ages 10 and up.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

Premier Academy will be host-

ing several camps geared towards

cheerleading and dancing enthu-

siasts.

Premier’s camps are designed

to promote friendship in an envi-

ronment that allows for immense

amounts of fun and learning si-

multaneously.

This athletic camp will teach

athletes how to work by them-

selves and with other athletes of

the same age and ability level to

work on their cheer skills.

“Cheerleading incorporates

so many different disciplines

including dance, gymnastics/

tumbling and acrobatics and it is

incredibly athletic,” said Riana

Luck with Premier Academy.

Jumps, dance, tumbling, stunts

and pyramids will all be wrapped

up into the program. Each camp

is taught by certifi ed cheerlead-

ing and gymnastics instructors.

By the end of the camp, ath-

letes will have learned a routine,

which they will perform at the

end of the week for family and

friends.

“It one of the most team-ori-

entated sports out there as every

member plays an important role

in routines and skill-building,”

explained Luck.

“If one person is missing, there

are entire sections of routines

that cannot be completed, as

such, cheerleading helps to teach

teamwork, commitment and so

many other valuable life skills.”

Camps start as early as July

22nd and as late as Aug. 19th.

Premier Academy offers three

separate levels of camps and each

level is divided further into age

and skill level.

The Cheer Academy offers an

introduction to cheer camp, Pre-

school Camp, for young future

cheerleaders, aged three to fi ve

years.

This camp focuses on the fun

and fundamental skills that Pre-

mier teaches in its usual pro-

gramming.

The Preschool Camp teaches

beginner motions such as dance,

jumps, stunting and tumbling

and is the perfect introduction to

cheerleading.

“Getting your children en-

rolled in cheerleading at a young

age helps to build some of the

fundamental motor skills, coor-

dination, fl exibility and strength

required for many other sports.”

Cheer and Dance Camp is open

to athletes of any ability and skill

level ages six to 14.

With daily themes, games,

crafts, and special guests to the

camp – the Cheer and Dance

Camp teaches the fundamentals

of cheerleading in a fun, fast-

paced environment.

Athletes can expect to learn

various stunts, dances, jumps

and tumbling techniques.

“Cheerleading also builds self-

confi dence,” said Luck. “Quite

often we have new athletes start

with our program who are shy

and timid and by the end of the

season they have developed confi -

dence in themselves and they are

much more outgoing.”

For those looking to improve

on their already blossoming

cheer skills, Premier Academy

offers a Future Stars Camp for

ages six to 14.

This camp offers a stronger

grasp on the basics of tumbling.

Premier Academy states on

their web site, “If you want to get

your back handspring, multiple

back handsprings and elite tum-

bling lines to max out level 1 or 2

then this is for you!”

This tumbling intensive camp

puts an extensive focus on stunts,

jumps and dance.

Premier Academy is also host-

ing various clinics in the summer

months, beginning with a Walk-

over Clinic July 15-16 from 9 a.m.-

12 p.m., a Handspring Clinic July

15-16 from 1-4 p.m., and a Tucks

Clinic on Aug. 6-7 from 1-4 p.m.

To register for any camps and

clinics, visit www.premieracad-

emy.ca or call 403-352-7744.
