CAMP TEEPEE POLE is a camp for boys. Affiliated with Christian Service Brigade our motto is “to win and train boys for Christ.”We are also an outdoor adventure camp. In short, this is a place where boys can be boys while learning about God, their Creator. Psalm 8:3-5As an extension of the year-round CSB ministries, Camp Teepee Pole staff have been working with boys all year round. We have a year round program that provides a natural “follow-up” program for the boys. We choose activities that boys like, methods of training that boys respond to, and leaders who can become friends and role models.Of course there is another reason for choosing Camp Teepee Pole - it is a lot of fun! Our activities are very outdoor oriented and include things like hiking, white water rafting, and many others. (Not all activities are available for all age levels - we always ensure things are “age appropriate.”)Facilities: max 50 campers each week. There are 6 cabins each with 10 bunks and loft, bring your own bedding and flashlight; Washhouse with showers and toilets; Kitchen and dining area with qualified cooks to provide great food for summer camps. If you are interested in a girls camp, contact Alberta Camp Cherith, who use CAMP TEEPEE POLE for a summer camp for girls, providing similar activities.

Chinook’s Edge School Division offers summer schools in three communities, making it convenient for students to take courses for credit. Summer School is available in Innisfail, Sylvan Lake and Olds. High School students, or those entering grade 10 in September 2016, are able to take courses to upgrade existing marks, complete a re-quired course missing from their timetable, or for personal reasons. All core high school courses are offered and there is no charge for students currently in Chinook’s Edge. Students work at their own pace, but under the guidance and supervision of teachers who provide assistance when needed. Taking a summer course provides students the opportunity to upgrade their marks in a course they didn’t do well in, or it can help reduce their course load in Sep-tember. Summer School runs Monday to Friday, July 4-29, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Begin next school year ahead of the game! Call us toll-free at 1-800-561-9229

at SunnybrookFarm Museum Red Deer Chapter will once again be offering their Kinship Camp program this summer. Kin-

ship Camp is a Social Skills camp that helps teach children the social skills they need in order to achieve success in social situations. The realm of social competence can be difficult for some children to navigate, as we do not consciously teach social skills the way that we teach reading and mathematics. Children en-rolled in Kinship Camp are immersed in learning these necessary skills through games and hands-on and role-playing activities that will help them fit into some of the social situations they will need to deal with and nurture their self-esteem and confidence as well.Kinship Camp is specifically designed for children with learning disabilities and ADHD who have internalizing and externalizing social skills difficulties. If you child is hyperactive, im-pulsive, prone to outbursts, bossy and has difficulty keeping friends we will help teach them self-monitoring and self-awareness strategies to help them with their externalizing social skills difficulties. If your child is shy, anxious, clingy, withdrawn and has difficulties making friends or starting/ joining conversations we will help teach them strategies to overcome their internaliz-ing social skills difficulties.

With over 1,200 youth taking part in a variety of summer camps at Red Deer College this past summer, there is surely something for everyone. One enthusiastic summer camper is sixteen-year-old Joey Stedman. Joey discovered RDC’s summer camps in 2014. He signed up for two weeks of Teen Film Camp, followed by MusiCamp Alberta. “I was expecting good camps, but when I got here it was way better than I ever imagined,” re-calls Joey. “And it kept getting better and better, every day.” RDC’s summer camps are taught by instructors who are experts in their field. They devote time to teaching participants about the opportunities available to them in each industry.“Coming here, you really get that sense of family and integrity. It’s different than anywhere else,” Joey shares. He plans to return for six consecutive weeks this summer.Joey is an artistic triple threat with talents in filmmaking, musical theatre and band. Like Joey, many youth have multiple interests. RDC offers a wide range of day and overnight camps in-cluding sport, science, visual art, film, game design, trades, music, dance, animation and even cooking. Joey encourages his peers to see summer camp as an opportunity to explore new experiences outside their comfort zone.“Just give it a try. You can find out so much more about yourself, about what you want to do in the future.”RDC’s 2016 summer camps are now open for registration. Learn more at rdc.ab.ca/summer-camps or call 403.356.4900.

Sunnybrook Farm Museum is again offering a re-markable summer day camp experience for children aged 5-11. Located at 4701 – 30th Street, just North of Bower Mall and tucked up against Waskasoo Park, the Museum preserves the history of the fam-ily mixed farm right inside the City of Red Deer. In the buildings and exhibits throughout the site you will find farming equipment from a century ago to the 1950s. A walk through the grounds takes you past a

dairy barn, machine and hay sheds, a display barn, chicken coop and exhibits, to a century-old log house. A heritage flowerbed fronts the house, while a more modern summer kitchen at the back hold items used every day by settlers.

Our summer day camp experience is led by a professional team of interpretive staff. Children will participate in traditional farm activities including learning how to feed baby farm animals, make butter, pump water, cook on a wood stove and take part in fun farm activities and crafts. They will explore our 1889 log home, check out the blacksmith shop, and take a ride on the barrel train. Weekly field trips are also included. These day camps run July 4 – August 31 between the hours of 9:00am and 4:30pm, with before and after care available. Costs are $175.00 for a week or $40.00 per day. is “to win and train boys for Christ.”We are also an outdoor adventure camp. In short, this is a place where boys can be boys while learning about God, their Creator. Psalm 8:3-5As an extension of the year-round CSB ministries, Camp Teepee Pole staff have been working with boys all year round. We have a year round program that provides a natural “follow-up” program for the boys. We choose activities that boys like, methods of train-ing that boys respond to, and leaders who can become friends and role models.Of course there is another reason for choosing Camp Teepee Pole - it is a lot of fun! Our activities are very out-door oriented and include things like hiking, white water rafting, and many others. (Not all activities are available for all age levels - we always ensure things are “age ap-propriate.”)Facilities: max 50 campers each week.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING A SUMMER CAMP

Though February does not often elicit images of youngsters building campfires or playing games in the pool, the month more synonymous with the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day is a great time for parents to start thinking about summer camps for their kids.Summer camp is often something kids look for-

ward to, and something they will fondly recall long after they reach adulthood. For many kids, summer camp provides a first taste of independence, as youngsters spend significant time away from home without their parents for the first time in their lives. But as great an experience as summer camp can be for youngsters, it can be just as difficult an experience if parents don’t find the right fit for their children. That’s why it behooves parents to start thinking about summer camps for their kids in winter, before camps start filling out their rosters, which tends to happen in early spring. The following are a few things parents should take into consideration when seeking a summer camp for their kids.

STAFFThe right summer camp staff can make all the difference. Many children are understandably shy when arriving at a summer camp, as their friends from back home might not be joining them. That can make kids hesitant to participate in activities or less enthusiastic about those activities. But a good staff will know how to make kids feel welcome, which should help them come out of their shells and make the most of their summer camp experiences. The quality of staffs can vary significantly depending on the camp, so it’s important that parents ask camp representatives about their staffs before

making any commitments. Ask how long the staff has been together and the types of training new and even veteran staff members undergo before the start of camp season? Does the training include first aid and emergency medical training and certification? It’s also good to ask about the vetting process the camp employs before hiring new staff, including the extent of its background checks. Are criminal background checks con-ducted? How many references must potential staff members supply to be considered for employment? A good camp will be forthcoming with answers to all of your questions, so eliminate those that appear hesitant to share information about their staffs.

A DAY IN THE LIFEWhen vetting camps for kids, parents should ask what a typ-ical day is like once the season hits full swing. Many parents want their youngsters to have a well-rounded experience, while others might want their kids to attend a more specialized camp, whether it’s a sports camp focusing on a particular sport or a music camp devoted to helping kids become bet-ter musicians. Regardless of the type of camp parents are considering for their kids, they should ask about what daily life at the camp is like. Ask to see schedules and how strictly camps adhere to those schedules. When considering special-ized camps, ask the staff representative if kids will have the chance to simply have a little fun and which types of recre-ational activities are planned to give kids a break from what are often rigorous schedules.

CAMP GOALSAnother thing parents must consider before choosing a sum-mer camp for their kids is the goals of each individual camp. A camp should be dedicated to ensuring kids have fun, even when kids are attending more specialized camps that tend to be more strict. In addition, parents should look for a camp that wants its attendees to foster relationships with their fellow campers. Camp can be lonely for some youngsters, especially those attending summer camp for the first time, but a summer camp that strives to promote friendship among its campers can reduce, if not eliminate, any feelings of homesickness.Late winter is when parents should start looking at summer camps for their kids, and there are a host of factors moms and dads should take into consideration during the vetting process to ensure their youngsters have as much fun as possible.

BEGIN PLANNING KIDS’ SUMMER RECREATION NOW

Many families spend winter figuring out how to chase away cabin fever and endure frigid temperatures until spring and summer merci-fully return. Parents thinking ahead to swim-ming pools and days lounging on the beach can put their daydreams to practical use by

planning ahead for their youngsters’ summer vacations.Youth recreational programs and summer camps can bridge the gap in care between the end of school and the day when classes resume. Due in part to high demand, parents who want to place their kids in summer rec programs or summer camps should being vetting such programs and camps well in advance of summer. The following are a handful of tips for moms and dads who want their kids to have fun and fulfilling summers.• Ask for recommendations. Speak with fellow parents and trusted friends about where they send their children. Personal recommendations can be very helpful, providing firsthand insight into a particular camp or program. Schedule appoint-ments to visit camps that fall within your budget. Take your son or daughter along so he or she can get a sense of what camp will be like.• Explore all options. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without nar-rowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children.• Inquire about camp schedules. While many camps are flex-

ible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as

after-school programs. Arrangements will need to be made if

care is required after regular camp hours. Speak with camp

staff to see which types of after-hours programs, if any, are

available.

• Determine your camp budget. As varied as program offer-

ings may be, camps also can vary greatly with regard to cost.

Government-run camps may be less expensive than those

offered by private companies. Day camps typically cost less

than those that provide room and board. Find out if a particu-

lar organization subsidizes a portion of camp costs. Scouting

programs often have a dedicated camp and may offer afford-

able options for scouts. Martial arts schools and dance cen-

ters frequently offer camp schedules.

If camp seems out of reach, look into local summer recreation

programs at parks or schools. Such programs may not be as

extensive as those offered by camps, but they can quell kids’

boredom and keep children occupied during the day.

In addition to camp, remember to plan for some free days so

children can just enjoy some downtime. Such days can break

up the monotony of a routine and provide kids and families

time to relax together.

Summer recreation may be far off, but it is never too early to

start making summer plans, including finding camps and other

activities for kids.
