STEP 1: Determine the Manufacturer (OEM/Brand) of the Unit
Step 1: Determine the Manufacturer (OEM)/Brand of the Unit
Determine the Manufacturer and approximate Age of the unit.Typical manufacturers include: Husqvarna Brands: American Yard Products, Husqvarna, Poulan.
MTD Brands: Troy-Bilt, Cub-Cadet, Bolens, Yard-man, Yard machines,
White Outdoor.
STEP 2: Locate the Model and Serial Numbers of the Unit
Step 2: Model & Serial Numbers
Determine the Model and Serial Number for the Unit that requires parts or accessories.The serial number contains internal codes
for date of manufacture and productions location.
Decoding Model & Serial Numbers MTD serial numbers are generally 11
characters in length. A character can be a number,
dash or letter. There are different formats for
Riders, Walk Behind Units, and Handheld Equipment
Each MTD model number contains internal codes for product type, series number, engine size and deck or housing size.
MTD model and serial numbers are typically located under the seat. A typical model # will look like: 139-650-062 or 13a-669f062 Depending on age of the machine, the
deck may have its own model # A typical serial number will look like:

The model number is typically found on the rear deck on a white or silver label.
MTD Hand-Held EquipmentModel number location varies based on manufacturer and shape of
unit, typically on starter rope housing. Look for white sticker,usually on right side with “PPN” number.

AYP Model Numbers
American Yard Products (AYP) units from Husqvarna have an ID label, typically located under the seat, with: the model number mfg. id # and the serial number.
Typical model # may look like 95189
Typical manufacturer identification # may look like 951890
Typical serial # may look like 04250d360
Other Model Number Formats
Murray/Noma/AM units will have a model and serial # on a plate, typically located on the back of the mower, or under the seat. Typical model number: D3011-0100. Typical serial number: 94052 or 0454.
Murray OEM parts that are still in production are now made by Briggs. For these parts, use the Murray part number, and add“MA” to the end of the part number- to search for “Briggs parts”.
Engine Information
Engine Model, Serial and Type.
Engine information is SEPARATE
from the Equipment.
Briggs & Stratton Engine numbers are located in different places depending on the manufacturer
and engine model.
On Briggs and Stratton Engines you need the Model, Type & Code. The numbers you need look like 303447 1234-01 01061201. The first set of numbers is your Model number - 303447. Below is the Briggs & Stratton engine line with the location shown for each engine.
Just find yours in the picture.
Kohler On Kohler Engines
there is a sticker on the side of the engine containing all the information you need.
You need to get the Model, Spec and Serial numbers to identify a Kohler Engine.
Tecumseh Tecumseh Engines have a
similar sticker as Kohler Engines, with one very important distinction. On Tecumseh Engines you need the Model, Type and Date of Manufacture.
On this following sticker we can identify the Model is OHH55, the Type is 69094E and the Date of Manufacture is 8030 A.
