number, covering a design with pattern blocks, sorting,
counting, and recording the pattern blocks used to cover the
design, looking for a pattern to solve a problem, written
assessment 11, oral assessment 6, and addition facts adding 2.
Phonics: Target sound short O, special exhibits, reading
comprehension, review, a we started our third book.
History: Israel divides into 2 kingdoms, Israel and Judah fall
Music: We learned about steps, skips, and leaps in music.
Art: We discussed our featured artist, Rembrandt. The students
colored one of the master’s works, ”Jacob Blessing the Sons of
Joseph.” Rembrandt used the Bible as the source for many of
his works. He paid particular attention to the details in his
rendering of the Biblical text. To Rembrandt these were not
simply Bible stories but rather, the represented un-idealized
events in real space-time history.

Art: This week students continued their study of value in art by
drawing a snowman scene with light from the moon and dark

using focused sunlight (magnifying glass), Bird of the Month:

Art: This week students used oil pastels to create a fire scene
by blending warm colors (yellow, red, orange).
Music: Learned more about oratorios (such as Handel’s
Messiah) and operas.

Latin: Christmas Words and Phrases (I give, gift, I sing, I
praise), Review, Test 12/16

subtracting 2-digit numbers using mental
computation; identifying larger/small difference story

Reading: D’Aulaire’s Greek myths.
Latin: Lesson 14 test; Chapter 15 - sentence patterns.
Grammar: Punctuation and capitalization rules applied to
friendly letters.
Writing: Creating story outlines.
Music: Learned more about oratorios (such as Handel’s
Messiah) and operas.
Art: Drawing cubes; tessellations.
P.E.: This week the students played volleyball.
Science: Constellations test; independent research.

Math: Students completed their ninth assessment and
Investigation 5 (Organizing and Analyzing Data), learned to
multiply by two-digit numbers and to name numbers through
hundred-billions, and reviewed all about perimeter.
History: This week in History students learned about the eight
Crusades.
Writing: Students continued to work on combining their three
summary paragraphs about ancient Greek cities into one
cohesive essay.
Literature: We continued enjoying our reading of Roger
Lancelyn Green’s retelling of The Adventures of Robin Hood.
Grammar: This week in Grammar we learned capitalization
and punctuation rules.
Latin: This week in Latin we studied the ablative prepositions,
memorized a new irregular verb, and continued writing our
own sentences using pronouns and prepositions.
Science: Fourth graders continued learning about the
processes of distillation, filtration, and centrifuge, and began
growing their own crystals from a supersaturated sugar
solution.
Art: The students are working a colored pencil apple, learning
about color theory and colored pencil techniques as we work.
Music: Please practice up to pages 13/14 and also the
Recorder 1 part of Jingle Bells near the back of their book.
P.E.: This week the students played volleyball.

Math: Decimal Number Line; Dividing by a Fraction; Review
and test; Rounding Decimal Numbers; Displaying Data.
History: This week we learned about production in the
thirteen colonies and their habits of trading with England,
Europe, and the West Indies.
Reading: We’ve made good progress into The Witch of
Blackbird Pond, discussing the characters and roles within
their family, and Kit’s entering into this new world as a
stranger to both the family and to their way of life.
Grammar: It has been another week of practicing the
capitalization rules as well as reviewing the past five chapters
of vocabulary.
Latin: Having finished the first five chapters, this week is a

review chapter in which we have been digging deeper
into the derivatives of the vocabulary words learned
over the past weeks and using them in creating new
sentences.
Writing: After completing and turning in their five paragraph
hobbit essays, the students also finished their stories, making
good use of their vivid imaginations to work out resolutions to
the conflicts!
Art: The students continued their soft pastel drawings of night
scenes on dark paper.
Music: Reviewed some of the information about music
history and spent more time singing.
Science: This week in Science we began our study of Groups I-
VIII of the periodic table; we also discussed the differences
between metals, nonmetals, and metalloids, and the
properties of alkali, alkaline earth metals, and halogens.
Memory: Proverbs 15:1-2, 4
P.E.: This week the students played volleyball.
Upcoming tests:

Math: The students started off the week by learning about
symmetry, ratio word problems, and more advanced
problems involving averages.
Science: The students learned about the chromosomes,
genes, DNA, and traits. We will be discussing more about
dominant traits, recessive traits, and Punnett Squares next
week.
History: This week the students learned about Robert E. Lee,
Thomas Jackson, and Ulysses S. Grant, and the impact they
had on the war.
Grammar: Personification, sentence pattern two, improving
short and choppy sentences, fact vs. opinion, and improving
long, rambling sentences.
6th Literature: We continued our journey around the world
this week, pausing to reflect on India and Hinduism, then and
now. We also reviewed nautical vocabulary, discussed Verne’s
attitude toward other cultures from a Christian worldview,
and even found time for a game of whist, English-gentleman
style.
Logic: This week the students learned about the equivocation
fallacy. This fallacy is used when you change the meaning of a
word in the middle of an argument.
Music: We practiced on stage for the program. Please be
sure your student(s) continue working on perfecting their
speaking parts (with enthusiasm!).
Art: The students continued learning the techniques
of pen and ink and practiced the many different ways
of shading.
P.E.: This week the students did not have volleyball because
they practiced for the Christmas Concert.
Verse: Philippians 2:16-19
Omnibus I: This week we continued our study of Herodotus,
focusing on the rise and fall of ancient empires. Of special
importance was the emergence of the Persians as a major
force, setting the stage for the main subject of the Histories,
the Greco-Persian wars. We also took time to discuss the
bizarre customs of many of the “barbarian” cultures
Herodotus introduces, as well as reasons why nations and
men fall.
7th Latin: Working on Chapter 17, discussing the dative case
and intransitive verbs

Algebra: The students learned about percentages in word
problems, solving problems with negative exponents, and
rearranging an equation before performing substitution.
Science: The students learned about the scientific method,
control variables, independent variables, dependent
variables, and how to carry out an experiment.
Omnibus II: We took an in-depth look at the development of
the authority and doctrine of the Catholic Church this week,
particularly in the early middle ages. We also examined the
rise and spread of Islam and the beginnings of the conflicts
between Islam and Christianity. We finished our week by
spending extra time working on our history projects.
Logic: Discussing the categorical syllogism.
8th Composition: This week we returned to Strunk and
White, covering matters of form, words and expressions
commonly misused, and style. We will end our quarter next
week with an assessment covering these three units as well
as elementary principles of composition.
Music: We are continuing learning our pieces for the
Christmas program. The students were also evaluated
musically by Mrs. Hawkins, Mrs. Gregory and myself in order
for me to select three students to participate in an All-State
choir concert in April, 2016.
Art: The students learned about Rembrandt, our artist of the
quarter and master of expressing character and personality
through the portraits he painted and etched.
P.E.: This week the students did not have P.E. because they
practiced for the Christmas Concert.
