SPECIALTY CAMPS 2018

In addition to our well-known Day Camp and Summer Stock Theatre programs, The Roeper School offers Roeper Summer Specialty Camps — camps smaller in size and shorter in duration, focusing on a specific topic. These camps allow campers to have fun and learn from Roeper teachers who are experts in their fields. Camps are available for children currently in grades 2 through 11. All Roeper Summer Specialty Camps will be held at The Roeper School’s Birmingham campus. 

INTRODUCTION TO FORENSICS ACTING CAMPfor students currently in grades 2 – 4

INTRODUCTION TO FORENSICS ACTING CAMP is not a crime scene camp. This one-week-long camp introduces students to Forensic Acting, a form of engagement with literature of all kinds that emphasizes the connections students make to performance pieces. Students are given guidance with offering and receiving constructive criticism as they use improvisation and other techniques to learn various skills centered on acting, public speaking, and line interpretation. Students will have the opportunity to work independently or with a group on a short performance piece that they will perform at the end of the session. Students will experience one-on-one coaching and learn the basics of public speaking in a supportive environment.

Students are welcome to bring any of their favorite children’s stories, poems, excerpts from books or plays, or TV/movie scenes to the first day of Forensics Speaking Acting Camp. Please keep in mind that we will have a little show from 2 – 3pm on the Friday at the end of our camp session.

JENNIFER MARTIN is an alumna of The Roeper School, Class of 2003, and currently coaches forensics at Roeper.In college she studied theatre, film, English and psychology, and she holds a B.A. in English and a Master’s degree in Humanistic Clinical Psychology from the Michigan School of Professional Psychology. Jennifer grew up participating in theatre at Roeper, and has been involved in many local professional productions in addition to commercial and voiceover work.

Introduction to Forensics Acting CampFor students currently in Grades 2 – 4

The ROEPER HARRY POTTER CAMP is a hands-on learning camp that allows the die-hard Potter fan to participate in all of the wonderfulness of Harry Potter.  It is project-based learning, allowing the student to enjoy Harry in a uniquely different way.  Our class will make its very own Marauder’s maps, play quidditch, design and create wands, participate in a potions lesson, pot mandrakes in herbology and build our very own magical creatures.  Harry Potter camp allows the Potter fan to live the experiences of the books! Spend a week living in the world of Harry Potter and friends drinking butter beers and eating Bertie Bott’s many flavored beans.

DEE BLANKENBURG has been a member of the Roeper community for over 17 years.  She was a Stage III homeroom teacher for 10 years and currently teaches physical education, electives, health and math.  Dee has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Tasmania, Australia, and loves Harry Potter!

ROEPER

The ROEPER SCIENCE CAMP is an opportunity for students who love science to explore science concepts with hands-on activities in real-life situations. We will build science knowledge and experience using inquiry-based activities that employ the scientific method, data collection and pure discovery. Students will learn to relate experimentation and science to the real world in these lively classes.

Session 1: 3D PRINTING AND DESIGNOne week, June 25 – 29, 9am – 3pm, $300

Explore the world of CAD design using Tinkercad, model making, and 3D Printing. Learn how to create, build, and print 3D objects, and discover how 3D printing is being used around the world. Bring your ideas to life!

Session 2: VEX IQ ROBOTICS One week, July 9 – 13, 9am – 3pm, $300

Students will have the opportunity to explore VEX IQ robotics programming, driving, building, and design to solve a variety of virtual and real challenges. They will work collaboratively in small groups to troubleshoot and investigate the limits of the robots using different graphical programming sequences, sensors, building designs and environments.

Science Camps are led by The Roeper School Science teacher WENDY MAYER who holds an Associate’s Degree from Schoolcraft College, a Bachelor’s Degree (summa cum laude) in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Science Education from Wayne State University. She has been teaching for 12 years and currently teaches 8th grade science and a variety of middle school science electives.

Speak Out:Forensics Acting Camp

For students currently in Grades 5 – 8

ROEPER

Just to clear up the most commonly asked question, this is an ACTING camp, not a crime scene investigation camp. At SPEAK OUT: FORENSICS ACTING CAMP, a two-week long program, students use plays, stories, poems, or their own writing to focus in on the details of performance and public speaking. Students can perform in a solo piece, with a partner, or in a group. Participants play with different techniques that address line interpretation, character development, stage fright, body language, improvisational theatre, and finding ways to connect with their own emotions and with their audiences through the words of their pieces. Students will be working with some top forensics coaches in the state of Michigan!

Students are welcome to bring any of their favorite children’s stories, poems, excerpts from books or plays, or TV/movie scenes to the first day of Forensics Speaking Acting Camp. Students are also welcome to bring their own creative writing. Please keep in mind that we will have a little show from 2 – 3pm on the Friday at the end of the second week of our camp session.

Forensics Camp is led by The Roeper School teacher DAN JACOBS. Dan has taught science fiction and fantasy literature, forensics, debate and a myriad of other classes at The Roeper School for over 20 years. Dan graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in English, a minor in Social Studies and certification in Secondary Education. He is the Head Coach for speech activities at Roeper, including Lincoln-Douglas Debate, High School Forensics and Middle School Forensics.

The ROEPER PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP CAMP will teach interested students to work in a wet lab darkroom.

The darkroom experience is a wonderful way for students interested in photography to explore the magic of black and white pinhole photography using an authentic darkroom. Students will shoot a variety of pinhole cameras starting with the standard oatmeal container. Students will produce paper negatives, make positives in the darkroom, and learn how to hand-color black and white photographs. All materials are provided. Students will have the opportunity to scan their pinhole images, and work on them digitally in Photoshop. In addition, students will be able to work with digital images they bring with them to camp.

In case of inclement weather where students are unable to go outside, the students will then be using digital equipment.

Photography Workshop Camp is led by Roeper faculty member, MICHELLE STAMLER. Michelle holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History from Oakland University. She has been teaching photography at The Roeper School for 25 years, currently teaching darkroom photography, digital photography, digital video editing and graphic design to Middle and Upper School students. Michelle, a freelance and fine art photographer, began her career in England and has exhibited in Europe and across the United States.

Photography Workshop Camp

For students currently in Grades 6 – 11

ROEPER

In the ROEPER HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE CAMP, students will learn the ins and outs of formal and informal debate. This course covers persuasive writing, speaking and how those skills are applied both in daily life and in competition. Students learn how to reason about contemporary issues and convey their reasoning in a civil and compelling manner. The goal of the camp is to prepare students for the upcoming debate season.

Each daily session will focus on a different topic, ranging from an introduction and review of historical debates, exploration of argument structure, identifying good sources, the relevance of moral philosophy — all culminating in a formal debate.

Session 1: July 30 – August 10, 12pm – 4pm, $400

The High School Debate Camp is led by JACOB MOORE, a member of The Roeper School Debate and Forensics Staff for three years. Prior to, and concurrent with, his work at Roeper Jacob has privately tutored students from primary to post-secondary education in Social Studies, English, and Philosophy. He attended Bowling Green State University where he was named Most Outstanding Senior Philosophy Major, and competed in collegiate-level competitive debate as a member of both the Ethics Bowl and Bioethics Bowl Teams, ranking in the top eight nationally. Jacob received his Master of Arts in Philosophy in 2017, and continues to conduct independent research in Political Philosophy and Ethics.

REGISTRATION, PAYMENT and CANCELLATION POLICIES

REGISTRATION MUST BE COMPLETED ONLINE. No faxed, emailed, mailed or hand-delivered applications will be accepted. Online registration is available at www.roeper.org.

Registration for Roeper Summer Specialty Camps begins at noon February 3, 2018. Enrollment is limited so early registration is advised. Full payment must be received within 14 days of registration. All payments must be made by cash or check payable to Roeper Summer Programs and mailed to:

Confirmation of registration will be emailed once your payment has been received.Credit Cards are not accepted. All checks returned for insufficient funds will incur a $30 fee.

All cancellation and refund requests must be made in writing or by email and received by Roeper Summer Specialty Camps by April 30, 2018. Cancellation of enrollment should not be assumed until confirmed by the Roeper Summer Specialty Camps. Refunds of camp fees are not provided after April 30, 2018 for any reason, including, without limitation: absences, suspensions, dismissals, withdrawals, or dissatisfaction with placement or program.  All refunds will be processed within two weeks of notification.

For extended illness, refunds will be on a per-day basis beginning after the fourth day of absence. A signed letter from a physician is required for refund. Refunds of camp fees will not be provided for camp closures due to circumstance beyond the camp’s control, such as severe weather and power outages.

LOCATION

All Roeper Specialty Camps are held at The Roeper School’s Birmingham Campus at 1051 Oakland Avenue in Birmingham (two blocks north of Maple on the west side of Adams Road).

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP

Campers may be dropped off no earlier than 15 minutes prior to the start of their registered camp and must be picked up no later than 15 minutes after the registered camp ends. Before- and after-camp supervision programs are available at an additional fee of $5.00 per hour for all programs EXCEPT High School Debate Camp. Before and after-care is offered Monday through Friday from 7:30am – 8:45am and 3:00pm – 6:00pm. This program can be used as needed; no prior arrangements are necessary. Time is calculated based upon the half hour. All time will be rounded up daily for billing purposes. Invoices will be emailed at the end of the session.

LUNCH

For full-day programs, students must provide their own lunches. Please do not send items containing nuts, peanuts or peanut oil.

OTHER FORMS

The necessary camp forms, upon receipt of your payment, will be emailed to you with your confirmation. By law, children must have a physician-signed health form returned to Roeper prior to the start of camp. Health forms completed and signed by a physician within one year of the start of camp will be accepted.
