Welcome…. Enjoy!
The Okonjima Nature Reserve represents 22,000 ha of typical northern Central Namibia
thorny bushveld. It is comprised of sandy bush-encroached plains interspersed with
numerous ephemeral river beds with their adjacent riverine habitat. The elevated Okonjima
Valley, where the lodges are situated, makes up the southern third of the reserve.
This valley is surrounded by the Omboroko Mountains which form part of the 190 million
year old Etjo Formation.
This area, as for many parts of Namibia, is thought to now be significantly different from
what it was about 250 years ago. This is due to a variety of interrelated factors. It seems
that the most significant of these was the arrival of the Ovaherero people with their herds
of livestock. Namibia is an arid fragile country with irregular rainfall leading to a scarcity
of surface water in isolated places. Environment such as this is easily damaged resulting in
the balance of nature being compromised. This started the cycle of overgrazing ultimately
resulting in the current consequent bush encroachment.
Consequently this topography enables a variety of flora and fauna… seasonal, resident and
migratory. The Okonjima Nature Reserve provides ideal, safe habitat for most of the species that
we have deduced would have naturally occurred here. This is particularly applicable to the most
magnificent of all large cats…the leopard! As a result of nearly 30 years of co-existing, studying
and researching these supremely intelligent and adaptable animals, the Okonjima Nature Reserve
is the perfect place to be able to view and spend some time in their presence. These leopards
are truly wild but have become habituated to our vehicles as, over generations, they have not
be harmed in any way. This means that the probability of some magical moments with these
amazing felines is much higher.
Experience, Enjoy…and Treasure!
