Organ Refurbishment

I uistorical Notes

When Bethlehem Lutheran Church was opened in Flinders Street in 1872 it had a modestorgan built by J.W. Wolff. This organ had a single-manual, pedal board and six stops"

ln'1883 Mr (later Professor) I G Reimann returned to Adelaidefrom musicalstudies inGermany, bringing with him a one-manual-and-pedal pipe-organ built by Backmann of Berlin(c. 1878). This organ was first installed in Mr Reimann's Adelaide College of Music inWakefield Street. The organ was rebuilt and installed in the gallery of Bethlehem LutheranChurch in 1888. The Backmann organ had a single-manual, pedals and 6 stops with 350pipes.

Specification:Manual: Bourdon 16', Prinzipal B', Gamba (TF) B', Flote B', Octav 4', Quinte 2 213' andSuper-octav 2'.Pedal: Bourdon 16' and Violone B'.

ln 1904 the organ was relocated to the front left of the church; it was enlarged by J.E. Doddwith the addition of a second manual, with additional pipes by Fincham's of Melbourne. Theorgan now had two manuals, pedals, 19 stops, 3 couplers and 936 pipes.

Specification:Great: Bourdon 16', Open Diapason B', Claribel 8', Gedeckt B', Dulciana (TC) B',Octave 4', Mixture ll (12,15) and Clarinet B'.Swe//: Bourdon 16', Open Diapason 8', Hohlflute B', Gamba B', Octave 4', Flautotraverso 4'and Oboe B'.Pedal:Bourdon 16', Violone 16' and Flute B'.

ln 1958 the organ was again rebuilt and extended by J.E. Dodd and Sons, Gunstar OrganWorks, Plympton, South Australia. The organ was again relocated to the gallery. This was amajor alteration with the addition of a third manual, the action altered to electro pneumatic, theconsole action converted to electric and the blower replaced with a silent discus fan. Newpipework for this extension was sourced from Laukhufts of Germany and Palmers of England.The organ now consisted of 43 stops, 22 couplers and 2193 pipes.

Additions since 1958 have been 3 stops and 1 coupler in 1985 and 354 pipes in 1987. TheJames B. Thiele memorial horizontal trumpet stop of 56 pipes was added in 1998. The organnow before its current rebuild consisted of 3 manuals - Positiv, Great and Swell - and Pedalorgan, having 47 stops, 23 couplers and 2603 pipes.

I

I Refurbishment

By 2000/2001 it became clear that the organ was in need of considerable repair work, both tofabric and function. The Organ Refurbishment Committee (ORC) was formed in November2001 to oversee the work, and Lewis Heritage Consultants of Unley Park, SA was appointedas Consultant and Project Manager.

The Committee developed four aims:

e to restore full function to the instrument, integrating 21st century technotogies;

. to undertake steps to conserve the organ for future generations;

. to incorporate the 32' Pedal Reed rank, which had been part of the former AdelaideTown Hallorgan;

. to complete the organ by adding timber casework and fagade pipes.

The refurbishment and updating of the instrument was undertaken by Australian Pipe OrgansPty Ltd (APO) of Keysborough, Victoria. The new timber casework was manufactured andinstalled by Panczak & Willenberg Pty Ltd of Magill, SA, to a design by Roger Lewis of LewisHeritage Consultants. lncidental work has been carried out by a number of other localindividuals and companies.

The organ was removed from the church in April 2004 and the pipes and other componentswere shipped to APO workshops in Victoria to allow the extensive refurbishment work to becarried out. The organ has been progressively re-installed in the church gallery over the pastsix months, and it will be played publicly for the first time at the worship services on Sunday,11 December 2005. Once again the "Voice Mighty in Praise" will be heard.
