English Lesson:

Examining Visual Elements

Advertisers use many visual elements and techniques to create their advertisements to

make the products more appealing to the viewers. Today we are going to look at some of

these, and identify them within various ads.

Visual Elements

Placement: How are the images placed on the page? (In the middle, up the top, to the left

etc.)

Colour: What colours are used? Have they used particular colours to draw your eye to

something in the ad?

Size: Are there any images that are deliberately larger or smaller than they should be?

PLACEMENT:

Where are the images placed on the page? (For example: around the edge, in the middle, in

a row)

Images are deliberately put in a certain spot to grab your attention. Have a look at the

following ads and identify where the image has been placed and why… (For example: The

image has been placed in the middle to draw your attention only to the product they are

selling.) Write your answers in your English exercise books if working online.

COLOUR:

Colour is used in advertisements to make an object stand out more than

the other objects in the image.

In writing, colour may be used to draw your attention to specific words.

Look at the example Coca-Cola advertisement. The first thing that attracts

your attention is the bottle because it is a dark coca cola bottle and stands

out in the white background.

Have a look at the following ads and identify where the colour has been

used and why. Write your answers in your English exercise books if working

online.

SIZE:

Size is used in advertisements to draw attention to the product they are advertising. When

you look at the following advertisements, think, are there any images that are deliberately

larger or smaller than they should be? Does this effectively make you notice the product

they are selling? Write your answers in your English exercise books if working online.

Daily Writing: Complete the task below in your exercise book. You will continue to add to

this tomorrow.

Your Task today is to:

1. Use the hamburger template to plan your writing. Start by deciding whether you

agree or disagree with the above statement.

2. Write down 3 arguments that support your opinion about bike riding. Make sure you

explain and give reasons for the arguments to support your opinion. Use dot points

to write your ideas.

3. Choose your arguments carefully to convince the reader.

In tomorrow’s lesson, you will write full sentences.

HERE IS MY EXAMPLE BELOW

Is It Safe to Ride a Bike to School? Riding your bike is a great way to stay fit and healthy. However, many people think it

is too dangerous to ride your bike to school unsupervised because of the traffic.

Many people believe if you ride to school, that it should be with an adult.

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree?

Perhaps you can think of ideas for both side of this argument.
