1 March 2020 SPIKE Newsletter of the Ottawa Orchid Society Shawn Hillis - Garden Slippers This month we welcome Shawn Hillis, owner of Garden Slippers in Calgary. Shawn is an excellent speaker, who runs his own Orchid Nursery specializing in temperate Cypripedium or Lady Slipper Orchids which can be grown successfully in Canadian gardens in spite of our cold Canadian winters. His success in getting these plants to survive Calgary winters has been outstanding, and if he can grow them, we should be able to as well. He offers native Canadian species such as the Showy Lady Slipper (C. reginae) and the Yellow Lady Slipper (C. parvisepalum) and also carries some of the very colourful and exotic lady slipper hybrids from Frosch orchids in Germany. He will show us some of the beautiful flowers that can be grown in Ottawa gardens and will talk about culture and growing methods during his talk. He will be bringing some orchids for sale, and they may also be purchased by pre-ordering though his site www.gardenslippers.com. If you would like to join us for dinner with Shawn at 6 p.m. Sunday at Milestones Restaurant (beside Ikea, at the Pinecrest Mall), please call or email Jan Johns before Sunday morning so she can reserve the appropriate seating. President's Message I am very pleased to see that everything is running smoothly in my absence thanks to Jan as Vice-President and Janet as Show Chair. From Jan's message below I can see that the auction was a great success once again, and my thanks to all involved for your hard work. The Show is coming together very well, with a full slate of vendors and exhibitors once again. We have one or two new vendors and new exhibitors, but overall it should be very similar to last year's Show. If you have not already volunteered, please check out the volunteer sign-up sheets that we will have at the March meeting - we cannot run the show without you!

Dave Cooper

Vice President's Message Well…that was a wonderful auction! Many thanks to our enthusiastic auctioneer, Doug Vye, and our amazing auction team: Femmy Mes, Monique Savard and her husband, Jean Guy Cyr, led by the indomitable Diane Aubry. We are very grateful for these very organized and efficient volunteers who stepped up to make this event such a success. You will be pleased to know that you raised $1,041.79 this year. We have enough to send to our Judging Centres and more. Thanks to all of you who brought items for the auction, some of them were fantastic. It appears that our audience really likes to buy plants. Thanks to those who bid and took home auction items. Participation is what makes our Society strong. I hope you all got at least one item that makes you happy. I know I did. Show season is upon us. Thank you to Joyce Medcalf for taking plants and doing the display for the SOOS show and to those who donated plants for that event. There are several more shows coming up for which we will need plants. Helen Nitschkie and I are taking plants to the OSRBG show in Hamilton, and Barbara Wysocka has volunteered to do the Les Orchidophiles de Montréal Show coming up on March 28 - 29. There are two other shows besides ours in April: Les Orchidophiles de Québec, April 4 - 5, and The Toronto Artistic Orchid Association on April 18 - 19, a week before ours. If anyone is willing to assist Barbara with a vehicle and driving (gas will be reimbursed of course) please let us know. Another necessity is orchids! It is not possible to do a display without a few orchids. If you have good orchids that are in bloom at these times, please watch for instructions for registration and delivery; make sure your orchids contribute to our displays. The wonderful displays we have at our show, Orchidophilia, are partly due to the displays we take to other shows. In March we have Shawn Hillis from Slipper Gardens. This is a great opportunity to learn about Cypripediums and how to keep them happy in your garden. Spring is coming! See you at the meeting.

Suwada Orchid Nursery

While recently in Japan, Masa Matsuo and I had the pleasure of visiting Suwada Orchid Nursery in Ichikawa, Chiba, Japan. The owner Mr. Munekazu Ejiri, graciously showed us around his many orchid greenhouses. Munekazu Ejiri is the 3rd generation to run this Orchid Nursery. His Grandfather, Sozaburo Ejiri started the business in 1945. They have been in the orchid business for more than 75 years in Japan. Their specialty is fine hybridized Cattleya Orchids, but offer other orchid genera as well. Suwada currently has 8 greenhouses. Photos taken by Bev Burtnyk

Oncidium Culture Sheet

on-SID-ee-um

This is an extraordinarily large and diverse New World genus with an equally diverse number of habitats. Oncidiums may originate anywhere from sea level in the tropics to the high elevations of the Andes. This obviously makes cultural generalizations difficult. More specific instructions may be available from the grower. Some genera included are Aspasia, Brassia, warm- growing miltonias (often called the Brazilian type) and many of their hybrids. Light needs can vary from bright to nearly full direct sun depending on the species. Most will thrive with one to several hours of sun a day. Generally, thicker leaved plants, such as "mule-ear" and "equitant" oncidiums, can stand more light. In a greenhouse, 20 to 60 percent shade is required, or about 2,000 to 6,000 foot-candles, depending on the plants. In the home, east, south or west windows are ideal. Many types of oncidiums will grow under artificial light: Four fluorescent tubes supplemented with incandescent bulbs and placed 6 to 12 inches over the plants are necessary for proper growth. Metalhalide and sodium-vapor bulbs also provide sufficient light without needing to be so close to the plants. Temperatures for this group are generally considered intermediate to warm: 55 to 60 F at night, and 80 to 85 F during the day. Temperatures up to 95 to 100 F are tolerated if humidity and air movement are increased as the temperatures rise, a good general rule in any case. Water requirements vary with the type of plant. Generally, plants with large fleshy roots or leaves need less-frequent watering than thin-leaved or thin-rooted plants. Watering should be thorough, and the medium should dry at least halfway through the pot before watering again. This may be every two to 10 days depending on weather, pot size and material, type of orchid and type of potting medium. Plants not actively growing should be watered less; many species have winter rest periods.

Humidity should be between 30 and 60 percent. Many oncidiums require less humidity than other orchids. Most greenhouses have adequate humidity. In the home, placing the plants above moist pebbles in trays is ideal. Fertilize regularly while plants are actively growing. Applications of 30-10-10 formulations twice a month are ideal for plants in a bark-based potting medium. A 20-20-20 formulation should be used on plants in other media or on slabs. If skies are cloudy, applications once a month are sufficient. Potting should be done when new growth is about one-half mature, which is usually in the spring. Fine-grade potting media are usually used with fine-rooted plants and coarser mixes with large-rooted plants; the standard size is medium grade. The plant should be positioned in the pot so that the newest growth is farthest away from the edge of the pot, allowing the maximum number of new growths before crowding the pot. Spread the roots over a cone of potting medium and fill in around the roots. Firm the medium around the roots. Keep humidity high and the potting medium dry until new roots form. Equitant and mule-ear oncidiums, as well as other fleshy-leaved or large-rooted plants, can be grown on slabs of cork bark or tree fern or in pots filled with a coarse, well-drained medium such as charcoal. This allows the drying between waterings that these types need.

WOC - Taiwan Postponed

February 28, 2020 https://www.woc23.com/eng-of-the-novel-coronavirus

Concerned About Spreading the COVID-19, The City of Taichung, Taiwan, Decided to Postpone the “2020 World Orchid Conference and Show” In order to protect the health and safety of the people in Taiwan and all of the WOC participants, as well as to avoid overloading the medical community and to comply with the central government policy, The City of Taichung has announced to postpone the “23rd World Orchid Conference and Show”, which was scheduled for March 9-18, 2020 at the former Flower Expo site in Waipu. The city government of Taichung said that, “although tremendous efforts have been placed on organizing the orchid conference and show and plenty has been done to keep everyone safe, in light of possible further disease spread and the central government raising the condition to Level 1, the City of Taichung and Taiwan Orchid Growers Association have jointly decided to postpone the event to a later time in 2020 after the COVID-19 has subsided.”

City of Taichung Announcement

“It took many years of efforts to secure the right to host the World Orchid Conference”, said the Agriculture Bureau of the City of Taichung which is the sponsor. The City further stressed that “This is the first time the World Orchid Conference takes place in Taiwan since its inception in 1954. After being awarded this honoring opportunity in South Africa in 2014, the City of Taichung and Taiwan Orchid Growers Association have spent the last three years preparing for this event. However, due to health concerns and to comply with the national healthy emergency policy, following extensive deliberations, we decided to postpone this long anticipated major orchid event. We understand that this postponement creates difficulties for those who have nearly completed their orchid exhibits. We further realize the financial losses for those overseas orchid scholars and experts who have been invited or volunteered to join this conference to contribute valuable presentations. As such, the Agriculture Bureau will seek all possibilities to minimize their losses. We hope that this Conference will soon be resumed after the danger of COVID-19 no longer exists.”

Editor’s Wrap

Many thanks to Mr. Munekazu Ejiri, owner of Suwada Orchid Nursery, for taking us through his greenhouses, to see all the gorgeous Cattleya Orchids and many other genera of orchids. It was such a pleasure that he allowed us to take pictures and for me to publish them in SPIKE. We also visited him at Suwada’s Vendor Booth at the Japan Grand Prix International Orchid and Flower Show. Thank you for your time and patience, while being so busy with the JGP Orchid Show!! Thanks to Masa Matsuo for showing me a great time in Japan. He was the perfect host. I found the language difficult. He was probably tired of me asking me what each product was, as not all were in English. He was an excellent navigator getting around Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. The Japan Grand Prix International Orchid and Flower Show was incredible. If you ever get the chance to go, it is well worth the visit. Thanks to Joyce Medcalf for creating the Display at the SOOS Orchid Show that received a 3rd Place. Congratulations for your 1st Place & Mario Ferrusi Memorial Trophy for Best Pleurothallid and 3rd Place Specimen Class, Pleurothallis bivalvis 'Hill Island' CHM/AOS. Congratulations to the other OOS Members who received winning ribbons. Thanks also to all that lent their orchids to this OOS Display. Thanks to Jan Johns and Helen Nitschkie for creating the Display at the Orchid Society of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone to contributed to this display. The display received a 2nd Place ribbon. I think that the City of Taichung, Taiwan and the World Orchid Conference Committee made the right decision with the postponement of the World Orchid Conference in Taiwan. After so much preparation, I hope that they will be able to have the event at a later date this year. The Coronavirus has many people nervous about traveling and the possibility of getting this contagious virus. I know that our OOS Members are probably relieved and disappointed by this postponement as they had planned to attend this Conference in March. Hopefully, they will be able to attend once the date has been rescheduled. Thanks to the American Orchid Society for their Culture Sheet on Oncidiums. This gives us a detailed description on how to grow them well. Many of us have one or two of these gorgeous orchids. If you have something that you wish to share or post in SPIKE, please send me an email on or before the 1st of the month. If submitted later, it will be entered into the next month’s SPIKE. As always, it takes many people to put SPIKE together each month. Many thanks for all who contributed this month. Until next month, Happy Orchid Growing!!
