This Sunday, July 21st, we will celebratethe 70th birthday of Woodmont ChristianChurch both on Sunday morning and with aspecial music festival in the afternoon from

2:00-5:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., we will gather in Drowota Hall fora special video presentation and some words from Mayor Karl

Dean. In "The Wonder of Woodmont," Bess White Cochrandescribes that first gathering at Woodmont School on July 18,1943: "Summer heat was rising in the humid puffs from the

billowy waves of asphalt that paved Estes Road in Nashvilleafter a day of intermittent rain, when a group of approximatelyone hundred men, women, and children crowded into a sixthgrade classroom of Woodmont School at 5 o'clock on theSunday afternoon of July 18th, 1943. The adults wedgedthemselves into the seats at the small desks, awkwardly,self-consciously; but despite their positions they were consciousof the significance of the occasion."

Cochran goes on to write that, "Dr. Noe, senior minister of

Vine Street Christian Church, was present, and preached biddingthe group God-speed, asking the blessings of heaven on it. ThenMr. Carpenter read a statement he had prepared embodying whathas become a cherished document called "The Covenant," astarkly beautiful expression of commitment. He invited allwho wished to embark on the venture of faith to sign it. And insolemn hushed moments, fifty-one persons affixed their namesto the following words:

THE COVENANTWe do hereby solemnly covenant with God and one another

to band ourselves together to establish a Christian Church

in this community for ourselves and posterity.

We pledge our time, substance, talents and prayers to theend that His Church shall be a house of prayer for all

people, a fellowship of those who believe in Christ and strive

to follow his teachings, and a part of the Church Universal. We aim to erect a suitable edifice for divine worship, for

Christian education, for stewardship, for world missions,

and to minister to the spiritual needs of the community. All of this. we covenant to be and do under the guidance

of God and the leadership of Jesus Christ our Lord.

70 years have passed since that hot July afternoon when thefifty-one founding members of Woodmont Christian Churchsigned their names on the Covenant that is now in our

narthex. Since that time, this church has grown from a hopefulgroup of men, women, and children gathered on a summerafternoon at Woodmont School to a well-known and establishedcongregation in the heart of Nashville, TN that exists to serveas a "Beacon and A Bridge" in this city and beyond. A toweringSpire that is a true landmark in Nashville, was erected liftinghigh the cross, reminding all of us of the God that we serve andthe Lord that we have made a commitment to follow. We havemembers from all different faith backgrounds and walks of lifeconsistent with Stone-Campbell movement's desire for Christian

unity. Five previous senior ministers (Frank Drowota, ClaBerry, David Moore, Earl Gibbs, and Doug Lofton) hafaithfully served this congregation, and I am honored to the sixth. There have been many gifted associate ministethat have served Woodmont throughout the years providispiritual leadership and guidance for the ministries of th

congregation. There have been numerous board chairs, boamembers, officers, committee chairs, Sunday School teacheelders, deacons, lay leaders, volunteers, and faithful membeand friends who have been and continue to be an integral partthe church body.

Our church has seen multiple building projecground-breaking ceremonies, fund-raising events, nministries, worship opportunities, and social activities. Thehave been times of joy and times of sorrow, times of rejoiciand times of heartache, times of unity and times of conflitimes of consensus and times of disagreement, times celebration, and times of mourning. And so many have ask

and continue to ask, "What is it that has held WoodmoChristian Church together throughout all of these years growth and change? What is it that has kept the spirit awonder of Woodmont alive since its conception in 1943?

Bess Cochran answers these questions by saying th"Woodmont was 'planted' at a moment in history when ma

people, ravaged by war, cried aloud for reassurance that Gwas still active in the affairs of human beings. The youchurch was a symbol of that reassurance, and its message acrothe years has lived up to its promise. Coupled with the fortuitotiming of its planting, the caliber of the men and wom

participating played a large part. They were people of standi

in the community who could and did attract others. And th'thought big,' eliminating at the start and forever, the temptatito which many embryo churches succumb to lower thsights. They refused to envision a church on a back street, one whose visible structure would not compare favorably wany other church in the community. They held to the dictum t'this one thing I do,' and while the enthusiasm that frequenactuates founding groups at the start was present more importwas the determination of the early members and leaders to hoon."

How is it that Woodmont has not only survived the p70 years but has grown and thrived? Certainly, Bess Cochrawords still remain true today, but I would add to her responthat the answer to this question is that faith, hope, and the loveGod have been the guiding force behind Woodmont. Maycontinue to be so as we celebrate this 70th milestone and moahead with faith into the future!

    Blessings,

70 Years and Counting!by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

We're in the midst of the interesting weatherchanges of summer. One day it's an absolutely beautiful day blue skies, sunshine, now and then a gentle summer breeze even.

The next day, or even week, it can be gray, dark, cloudy, withrain and thunder and lightning.

And while it's been record-breaking heat out west, we've hadsome great summer weather cooler and rain so far in 2013.

I have always been one who enjoys the rain. I even enjoyed awhole week of rain during the 4th of July week. I love to listen toit rain, watch it rain, sit outside (under the carport) and read in therain, and take walks in the rain. When I was a child I loved therain and would go to sleep with my window open when it rained. The next morning, my bed would be soaking wet from the raincoming in the window.

It's always amazing to me how it can be dark and thunderstorming in the morning, or afternoon, but beautiful and sunnythe rest of the day. When the sun comes out after a storm (and it'snot too humid), it's moments like that which make you so gladjust to be alive!

And so it is with life itself. One moment it's calm, peaceful, and beautiful. The next moment it can be filled with storms andworries, fears and frustrations. One minute we're on the mountaintop of joy; the next, we're in the valley of despair. Tears and

laughter, all intertwined. The dark threads and the light threadsare all a part of God's tapestry. But there's something good ineverything, even the storms of life, if you can develop the"spiritual eyes" to see it. Often it's in the midst of the darkeststorm that we can feel God's presence, God's peace and even joy(not happiness, but joy) the most.

But one thing I've come to appreciate more than ever is tpresent moment. Learn to live and enjoy the present momentthe fullest. Drink in everything and everyone around you. Do

get trapped in memories or regrets of yesterday. Don't mthe present moment by focusing too much on your hopes tomorrow. This is the day God has given us, so we shourejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24) And a major part what makes today so wonderful centers on the people wwhom we live, share love, and establish our personrelationships. This is what life is all about at its best! Rain shine, storms or rainbows, it's our friends who make our worWe should learn to enjoy everyone we're with to the fullest, fwho knows if they will be here tomorrow.

It seems that more than ever before, people today searching for spiritual strength. Maybe it's because there idegree of uncertainty beneath the surface of life today. Bhasn't it always been that way? So don't let worries and feabout tomorrow most of which never happen destroy fullness of today. Keep your faith strong between the peaks avalleys, storms and sunshine of life, so it will be there when yneed it the most. That's why regular worship, even during lazy, hazy days of summer is so important. When we staytouch with God through faith, we get more out of the presmoment. And instead of worrying about the future, we only loforward to it. Sure, we all have our trials and troubles, but Godgood and our joys and blessings are so much greater.

These are just some thoughts on a July day.
