The new Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center officially opened its doors in January.

Members of the CHRISTUS Spohn exec-utive team, physicians, elected officials and friends of our ministry met January 26 with generous benefactors whose gifts helped to support construction of the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center.

Those donations include a pair of mil-lion-dollar gifts from the A.R. “Tony” and Maria J. Sanchez Family Foundation and from H-E-B.

The Ed Rachal Foundation also provided a gift of $100,000 toward the new Garcia Family Health Center.

In addition to these lead gifts, the CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation received more than 120 gifts toward the Garcia Family Health Center through sponsors of the 2016 Lyceum, which featured Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough.

Your gifts aid excellence in trauma care

The 29th annual CHRISTUS Spohn Lyceum is quickly approaching and we are thankful for your support of our signature fundraiser!

Leslie McClanahan, chair of the Lyce-um committee, has helped to promote the event to local news media outlets and the Foundation is grateful for the coverage of what is sure to be an exciting night.

Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer Inc., will be our distinguished guest speaker, offering his insight and wit into the technology that has shaped the world around us all.

Mr. Wozniak also will take part in a question-and-answer session moderated

by trial and appellate lawyer William J. Chriss, J.D., Ph.D. Dr. Chriss, who also has held the titles of ethicist, historian, political scientist, religious scholar, and published author, grew up in Corpus Christi and attended Corpus Christi public schools.

His father, Dr. John Chriss, was the first endocrinologist in South Texas and practiced medicine on the staff of Spohn hospitals for more than 40 years.

Proceeds from this year's Lyceum will

go toward the construction of the new Level II Trauma Center being built at the Shoreline campus as part of People & Actions Transforming Healthcare (Our PATH Forward).

The 2016 Lyceum helped to provide funding for the new Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center.

Table sponsorships for the event start at $5,000 while individual tickets can be purchased for $500. We look forward to seeing you April 25!

My first encounter with Dr. Hector P. Garcia occurred when I was in high school. I traveled to his medical office on Morgan Avenue, just down the street from the current Memorial Hospital, to inter-view him for a class project.

I’ll never forget that visit and the lasting impression it left on me.

From that first meeting, I have maintained a deep-seat-ed respect for Dr. Garcia. His awards and honors were many, but to this day, one title stands out above all the rest in his enduring legacy: Champion.

Dr. Garcia was a champi-on of Mexican-Americans, a champion of South Texas, and, most importantly, a champion of health care. He never forgot his roots or his

community. He was a man of conviction and a man of the people — one who was never afraid to be the voice for those who otherwise would have remained silent.

Continuing Dr. Gar-cia’s legacy and caring for all Coastal Bend residents, regardless of status or in-come, remains at the heart of CHRISTUS Spohn’s mission. That’s why it’s such an honor for our health care ministry to have his name adorn what will become a symbol of excellence

for our community — the new Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memori-al Family Health Center.

It’s also our honor to rec-ognize all of the heartfelt gifts that helped to make this vision a reality. What you may not realize is just how much our mission depends on the gen-erosity and giving spirit of the residents of our South Texas community.

The South Texas Char-ity Weekend has provided monumental philanthropic support to CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, and its most recent gift will continue a legacy of health care excel-lence in the Kingsville area for years to come.

The annual fundraiser’s 2016 gift helped to provide CHRISTUS Spohn-Kleberg with the most advanced im-aging and diagnostic services available today.

An unveiling of a plaque honoring the donation, as well as a first look at the new Optima CT660 Scanner that was purchased for the hospi-tal, took place in November.

The new equipment will

provide better image quality for a host of procedures and also has a single-scan process that will shorten the time necessary for a patient to remain inside the scanner.

The new scanner can serve a wide range of applica-tions — cardiac, angiography, brain, chest, abdomen, ortho-pedic, and more, and is de-signed to specifically provide a comfortable experience for patients of all ages and sizes.

“The Charity Weekend has defined what it means to truly give back to South Texas,” says Karen Bonner, VP for Philanthropy. “We at CHRISTUS Spohn are grateful for that giving spirit toward our entire health care ministry.”

The South Texas Charity Weekend annual fundraiser in 2016 provided an exceptional gift of $200,000 toward a new Optima CT660 Scanner at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Kleberg. The hospital unveiled the state-of-the-art imaging equipment at a community celebration in November. Those in attendance included Stephen “Tio” Kleberg (from left), Jay Kleberg, Gus T. Beeville Ladies Night Out hosts Cowboy Masquerade Ball

The annual Mardi Gras fes-tivities associated with Beeville Ladies Night Out return this month — with a slight twist.

This year’s theme is Cowboy Masquerade Ball, with a re-ception and dinner being held Saturday, February 25 at The Grand Dance Hall in Beeville. The event will again begin with a VIP reception starting at 6 p.m., which will run until 7:45.

Entertainment will be provid-ed by the band Five Card Draw. The community is invited to purchase tickets for music and dancing starting at 8. The event concludes at 11.

This year’s proceeds will again benefit CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Beeville. Funds will go toward a new state-of-the-art ul-trasound machine for the emer-gency room, additional bassinets for the growing number of deliv-eries in Beeville, and additional mobile fetal heart monitors.

The presenting sponsor is May Ranch.

VIP tickets, which include early admittance, reception, din-ner and a special gift, are $100. Presale general admission tickets are $15 and are $20 at the door. Multiple sponsorship levels are available, starting at $500.
