St. Claire HealthCare recently received the Kentucky Hospital Association (KHA) Quality Award in the 100 to 250 Beds Category at the KHA Awards Luncheon on May 10, as part of the 90th Annual KHA Convention in Lexington.

The KHA Quality Award is presented to honor hospital leadership and innovation in quality, safety, and commitment to patient care. Hospitals presented with this honor demonstrate a dedication to patient safety as well as persistence to going above and beyond what is expected for providing quality care.

At this year’s convention, St. Claire HealthCare submitted an innovative change project titled, "Implementing a Patient-Centered Care Model to Reduce Opioid Usage." The project highlighted St. Claire HealthCare’s implementation of a shared vision by physicians and leaders alike to impact the opioid crisis and to improve patient outcomes. To compliment this St. Claire HealthCare physicians Will Melahn, MD, Jacob Perry, MD, John Sanders, MD, and Phillip Overall, MD, presented as a panel at KHA's annual convention.

“I am so proud of our medical staff for tackling this long-term issue affecting our community, patients, families, providers, and staff,” says Linda Fultz, St. Claire HealthCare Vice President of Quality and Resource Management. “Their decision to begin and continue this journey is one example of what we can achieve together through quality improvement initiatives and adopting clinical best practice.”

Spirit of

St. Claire

3rd Central Care TeamAs a child, every birthday is a milestone and a reason to celebrate. But when in the hospital, sick and scared, a birthday has the tendency to look pretty bleak. For one of our adored pediatric patients, this was almost their story, but our staff quickly changed the narrative.

As the care team on 3rd Central realized it was Mr. Maxie’s 6th birthday they quickly began plotting and planning. Though they anticipated he would soon be transferred they made every effort to celebrate this child like he was their own. Our team pulled out all the stops – bringing balloons, gifts, cake, and ultimately even spinning his transfer to be a birthday helicopter ride.

Though this staff would try shying away from any recognition, their actions didn’t go by unnoticed. Sometimes doing the “little things” make a big difference and for this child and his family, they softened a difficult situation a made a bad day a little bit brighter.

The team, consisting of Charlotte Kinney, BSN, RN; Kayla Harrison; Randa Hall, RN; Lindsay Cox, RN; and Chyann Hanson, RN; not only demonstrated our core values of compassion and excellence but they went the extra mile and displayed what we consider to be the “Spirit of St. Claire.”

Joelle Craft, BSN, RNIn the world of healthcare, it’s a mixed bag in terms of what a staff member may encounter during their shift. In a lot of ways, they get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly but nevertheless, they are relentless in the pursuit of providing excellent patient care.

When patients become agitated and combative it requires great poise in order to de-escalate the situation. And from then on it requires an enormous sense of patience and understanding. We want to recognize Joelle Craft, RN, BSN, for her professionalism and commitment to living out our

mission. Despite the unforeseen circumstances that lead to Joelle being hit by a patient, she remained calm and constant at the patient’s bedside, working diligently to help them in every way that she could.

While Joelle would probably tell you that she was just doing her job, we recognize her because she didn’t falter when the going got tough. She exhibited commitment and compassion which are the core values of our organization and the foundation of what we do.

Spirit of St. Claire Award Nominations - If you have witnessed a staff member or volunteer going above and beyond to care for our patients and visitors, you can nominate them for a Spirit of St. Claire Award by contacting McKenna Spence, Manager, Patient Experience & Clinical Support at [email protected].

St. Claire HealthCare Proudly Welcomes Kelly Butler-Vise, PA-CSt. Claire HealthCare is proud to announce the addition of Kelly Butler-Vise, PA-C, to our medical staff. Kelly is now seeing and accepting new patients at St. Claire Family Medicine’s Morehead North location where she joins Kim Bromagen, PA-C, and Wendy Fletcher, DNP, APRN.

“When I was in high school my sick grandmother received exceptional care from a physician assistant who really took the time to listen to her concerns. From then on, I knew that I wanted to provide care to others in that same way,” says Kelly. “I’m happy to be working at St. Claire as they are Christ-centered and really put patient care first.”

Kelly comes to St. Claire with nearly 10 years of emergency and family medicine experience. She earned her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Kentucky and then received her physician assistant certification through the NCCPA.

Kelly enjoys spending time with her husband Brandon and their six-year-old son Gideon. She also enjoys crocheting hats and blankets for her friends and family.

To schedule an appointment with Kelly or any of our amazing providers at St. Claire Family Medicine’s Morehead North location, call 606.784.2774 or visit www.st-claire.org/appointment.

PROTECTING PATIENTSHAIs (hospital-acquired infections) are a rising problem in the healthcare industry. St. Claire HealthCare has invested in a safer solution to address infections. Tru-D works by destroying germs and bacteria with safe, effective UV light, enhancing disinfection in a hospital environment and giving patients and staff peace of mind.

EMPOWERING STAFFTru-D SmartUVC allows our staff to ensure that a room is cleaner than would be humanly possible, and supplies us with valuable data that we can use to create a more effective and efficient cleaning program. Tru-D’s SmartUVC “brain” measures the correct dose of UV light to destroy harmful germs like MRSA and C.diff in just one cycle.

St. Claire HealthCare Now Has a Safer Way to

Destroy Germs and Protect Patients.

St. Claire HealthCare’s Controlled Substance Stewardship Committee (CSSC) has been awarded a $10,000 grant by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ ) to improve the care of patients undergoing chronic opioid therapy at St. Claire HealthCare.

The grant will be used by the committee to implement a “Six Building Blocks” program at St. Claire HealthCare. This program gives primary care providers access to tools and resources, as well as a proven and evidence-based roadmap to delivering effective, measured care to patients suffering from chronic pain. This opportunity also allows the committee to earn a maintenance of certification improvement in medical practice credit from the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Wendy Fletcher, DNP, APRN, SCH Clinical Director of Advanced Practice and CSSC Co-Chair, will serve as quality improvement lead and develop measures and reporting as it relates to the project. John Sanders, MD, SCH Medical Director of Hospice and Palliative Care, will serve as the project’s on-site clinical champion.

“We have a dedicated team committed to safe, high-quality care for our patients. This grant will help bring the best evidence into our clinical practices to coordinate that care, help our providers, and evaluate our processes around controlled substance prescribing,” said Cheryl McClain, MD, SCH Associate Chief Medical Officer.

National Hospital Week

Celebrating Hope & HealingThis year's National Hospital Week theme "Celebrating Hope and Healing", was designed to give recognition to the women and men who work in hospitals and health systems that support the health and well-being of their communities through their dedication and care from the heart.

St. Claire HealthCare celebrated our incredible staff in many ways during National Hospital Week to ensure that all staff received a celebration. The main campus celebration included a BBQ featuring great food, fellowship with co-workers and friends, and lots of smiles!

Plus, all staff were entered for a chance to win great door prizes like an electric smoker, a fire pit, fishing poles, and so much more! Activities also included an SCH trivia quiz. Each staff member that accurately completed the quiz was registered to win a $25 Walmart gift card. Thank you, SCH staff!

Fletcher Elected to Lead Kentucky Association of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse MidwivesWendy Fletcher, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, St. Claire HealthCare’s Clinical Director of Advanced Practice, was recently elected by her peers to serve as President of the Kentucky Association of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives. She assumed the office on April 27.

KANPNM is the state’s largest trade organization for advanced practice nurses, empowering its members to provide quality, accessible, and compassionate healthcare through education, leadership, and advocacy.

Dr. Fletcher serves on the KY GoodHelp ACO Board of Directors and the KY Medicaid Nursing Technical Advisory Committee. She is a two-time Past President and the longest-sitting elected member of the Board of the KY Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives, KANPNM’s sister organization.

“I, like KANPNM’s 2,000+ members, am committed to high quality, evidence-based patient-centered care,” says Fletcher. “I believe patients have a choice in who provides their care and I am an advocate for all health care professionals to work at the very top of their education, certification, and licensure to deliver care and serve the needs of their patients. That’s why being elected to lead this dedicated group of advanced practice nurses is both an honor and privilege, and such a labor of love.”

RPLP Students Earn Certification in Healthcare Leadership Submitted by Rebecca M. Todd, MD

St. Claire Foundation Receives Significant Gift for Family Medicine Locations from Physician’s Father

The St. Claire Foundation recently received a gift of more than $76,500 from the estate of Henry Humkey, father of Mary Jane Humkey, MD, longtime St. Claire HealthCare physician and administrator. Mr. Humkey's contribution will be used to support and expand upon the services offered in our family medicine locations.

“My father had a strong value system, and one of the things he taught us was the importance of giving to those in need,

which he did by giving of self, sharing knowledge and donating monetarily,” said Dr. Humkey. “In giving this gift to the family medicine clinics, he is helping support this service to others embodied by the mission of St. Claire HealthCare.”

Dr. Humkey joined the St. Claire staff in August 1985 and has worked as a medical provider and a family medicine administrator. Her father, who passed away last December at the age of 92 in his hometown of Peoria, IL, coordinated his generous gift through a charitable remainder trust.

News of Mr. Humkey’s gift came as a pleasant surprise to the SCH family medicine staff. “We are humbled and thankful for this very generous donation from the Humkey family,” said Dreama Perkins, SCH administrative director of primary care. “The contribution will be used to support and expand upon the services offered in our family medicine locations. We truly appreciate Mr. Humkey’s unwavering support of our mission and services.”
