Welcome & Announcements
Gathering
God meets us in our greatest need
and satisfies it with divine presence and provision.
In gratitude, let us worship the Lord our God.
Gathering Song: You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore Musical Leadership: Vi Ballard and Doreen Micheletti ELW Hymn 817
Verse1: You have come down to the lakeshore
seeking neither the wise nor the wealthy,
but only asking for me to follow.
Refrain: Sweet Lord, you have looked into my eyes;
kindly smiling, you've called out my name.
On the sand I have abandoned my small boat;
now with you, I will seek other seas.
Verse 2: You know full well what I have, Lord:
neither treasure nor weapons for conquest,
just these my fish nets and will for working. Refrain
Gathering Song (continued)
Verse 4: You who have fished other waters;
You, the longing of souls that are yearning:
O loving Friend, you have come to call me. Refrain
Refrain: Sweet Lord, you have looked into my eyes;
kindly smiling, you've called out my name.
On the sand I have abandoned my small boat;
now with you, I will seek other seas.
Confession
Let us confess our sin
in the presence of the One
who blesses us and meets our need.
God of compassion,
sometimes we are pretty unsettled.
We wrestle all night with worry
instead of resting in your presence.
Confession (continued)
We assert our own goodness
instead of embracing yours.
We turn away those hungry for help
instead of trusting you and feeding them
from your limitless supply of blessings.
Forgive us, heal us, wake us up.
Guide our thoughts, words, and actions
so that, by your grace at work in us,
others would experience your loving provision.
Forgiveness
The God of steadfast love is our refuge and Savior.
In Jesus Christ, we who are broken
are healed, forgiven, filled, and made new.
Amen.
Prayer of the Day
Let us pray together.
Glorious God, your generosity waters the world with goodness,
and you cover creation with abundance.
Awaken in us a hunger for the food that satisfies both body and spirit,
and with this food fill all the starving world;
through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
Word
God speaks to us in Bible readings, preaching and song
First Reading: Genesis 32:22-31 CEV
Payton Kao - Lector
A reading from Genesis, the 32nd chapter.
Jacob got up in the middle of the night
and took his wives, his eleven children,
and everything he owned
across to the other side of the Jabbok River for safety.
First Reading (continued)
Afterwards, Jacob went back and spent the rest of the night alone.
A man came and fought with Jacob until just before daybreak.
When the man saw that he could not win,
he struck Jacob on the hip and threw it out of joint.
They kept on wrestling until the man said,
“Let go of me! It’s almost daylight.”
“You can’t go until you bless me,” Jacob replied.
First Reading (continued)
Then the man asked, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,” he answered.
The man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob.
You have wrestled with God and with men, and you have won.
That’s why your name will be Israel,
(meaning, ‘one who strives with God’).”
First Reading (continued)
Jacob said, “Now tell me your name.”
“Don’t you know who I am?” he asked. And he blessed Jacob.
Jacob said, “I have seen God face to face, and I am still alive.”
So he named the place Peniel, (meaning, ‘the face of God’).
The sun was coming up as Jacob was leaving Peniel.
He was limping because he had been struck on the hip.
Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God.
Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5 CEV
Deb Smith - Lector
A reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans, the ninth chapter.
I am a follower of Christ,
and the Holy Spirit is a witness to my conscience.
So I tell the truth and I am not lying
when I say my heart is broken and I am in great sorrow.
I would gladly be placed under God’s curse
and be separated from Christ for the good of my own people.
Second Reading(continued)
They are the descendants of Israel,
and they are also God’s chosen people.
God showed them his glory, made agreements with them,
and gave them his Law.
The temple is theirs and so are the promises that God made to them.
They have those famous ancestors,
who were also the ancestors of Jesus Christ.
I pray that God, who rules over all,
will be praised forever! Amen.
Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God.
Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21 NIV
The Good News from Matthew, the 14th chapter. Open our hearts, Lord.
When Jesus heard (about John the Baptist’s beheading by Herod),
he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.
Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd,
he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Gospel (continued)
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said,
“This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late.
Send the crowds away,
so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away.
You give them something to eat.”
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,”
they answered.
“Bring them here to me,” he said.
Gospel (continued)
And he directed the people to sit down on the grass.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven,
he gave thanks and broke the loaves.
Then he gave them to the disciples,
and the disciples gave them to the people.
Gospel (continued)
They all ate and were satisfied,
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken
pieces that were left over.
The number of those who ate was about five thousand men,
besides women and children.
This is the Good News! Thanks be to God! Hallelujah!

Word in Song: Let Us Go Now to the Banquet Musical Leadership: Vi Ballard and Doreen Micheletti ELW Hymn 523
Refrain: Let us go now to the banquet, to the feast of the universe.
The table's set and a place is waiting; come, ev'ryone, with your gifts to share.
Verse 1: I will rise in the early morning; the community's waiting for me.
With a spring in my step I'm walking with my friends and my family. Refrain
Verse 2: God invites all the poor and hungry to the banquet of justice and good
where the harvest will not be hoarded so that no one will lack for food. Refrain
Verse 3: May we build such a place among us where all people are equal in love.
God has called us to work together and to share ev'rything we have. Refrain

in our homes, our communities, and the world.

Holy Communion
You may prepare your communion table at home now.
Following the Words of Institution, the Lord’s Prayer
and Communion Invitation, the presiding minister
will say the words first.
While inspirational communion music is played,
you may share in communion.
There will be a slide with the words to say during communion.
Word in Meal
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son:
a miracle-worker who cared enough that people were hungry
that he transformed a single modest lunch into a feast for thousands,
a teacher who, with love,
clarified his religion’s complicated laws,
a healer who boldly touched the sick and suffering,
a truth-teller who insisted
that the poor are full members of God’s beloved family,
and our Savior, who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.
Words of Institution
Word in Meal (continued)
Together as the body of Christ, we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts of bread and wine,
and send that Spirit, through us, over all creation,
that together your people may cultivate peace and justice
in every corner of the world.
Amen.
Lord’s Prayer
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.
Invitation to Communion
Friends of Jesus, come to the table.
Receive nourishment for your journey.
Amen.

Sending Song: On What Has Now Been Sown Musical Leadership: Vi Ballard and Doreen Micheletti ELW Hymn 550
Verse 1: On what has now been sown your blessing, Lord, bestow;
the pow'r is yours alone to make it sprout and grow.
O Lord, in grace the harvest raise, and yours alone shall be the praise!
Verse 2: To you our wants are known, from you are all our pow'rs;
accept what is your own and pardon what is ours.
Our praises, Lord, and prayers receive and to your word a blessing give.
Verse 3: Oh, grant that each of us, now met before you here,
may meet together thus when you and yours appear,
and follow you to heav'n, our home. E'en so, Amen! Lord Jesus, come!
