MAKERFEST 2018On Saturday, September 15, 2018, Pickering Public Library held an exciting event - the first of its kind in Durham Region. With line-ups at every station, clients were introduced to the Library’s recently launched Maker Space and participated in hands on demonstrations including:

• Design stations outfitted with iMacs and the Adobe software suite

• Sewing machines• Vinyl cutter and heat press• 3D printers• Carving machine• Loanable items like a gopro or DSLR

camera, green screen kit or wifi hotspots

Maker Space Highlights• Microsoft Imagine Cup winner, Hamayal Choudhry, was inspired by a 3D-printed hand he saw at the library; which

led him to create his award-winning design.

• Marcus Edwards and his vlogging colleagues use the iMacs and Adobe CC almost daily to edit green screen video footage for their YouTube channel. They also regularly use one of the Library’s collaborative rooms to do the video shooting and recording.

• Both young men above were visited at the Library by the Prime Minister recently.

• Eric Harper, a local boy who is missing fingers on both hands came to the Maker Space with his mom and used one of the sewing machines to modify gloves for winter.

• A group of young people used the vinyl cutter and heat-press to create t-shirts for their summer business.

• Local musician came in to print a piano key. His piano was damaged, and he needed it for a show. No time to get it repaired so he made the replacement key himself on the 3D printers.
