DESCRIPTION
UHS looking at integrated sport for 2014. Pros and Cons.TRANSCRIPT
Sport 2014
Sports organiser on the first day of sport each
term..
Proposal
• UHS move to a new integrated way of running sport.
Why the change?
• There are problems that exist with our current model.– High number of students signing out/truanting.– Students not bothering to select a sport on moodle.– Some students not fully active whilst at sport.– Large number of students doing activities which are
not physically active e.g. Volunteering, fishing is of concern.
– Many teachers with interest/expertise in different sports are not able to teach sport due to timetabling issues.
What would the new model look like.
• Year groups run on different days and/or periods.• Split into genders.• Competitions (eg. Basketball, touch, athletics) run based on
house groups.• Opportunity to elect house captains in each year group who
would help run the house teams.• Scores, points, best & fairest awards etc. would be kept.• Possibility of joining genders back together in final week to run a
whole year final. Awards and prizes would be given out during this week.
• Teachers with expertise and/or interest would nominate to do sport.
What are the advantages?• Opens the timetable up as sport would not be blocked on at the
same day and/or periods each week.• Less students accessing leave passes.• All teachers would go to a 45 period teaching load. This means
one less teaching period!• Opportunity to increase house spirit and develop leadership roles
for students within their peer group.• Increased knowledge and ownership for teachers over their sport
group.• Decreased cost as most sports would run at school or walking
distance venues.• Opportunity to possibly coach representative teams during sport
time.• Increased fun and participation…Hopefully
What would change for the teacher?
• One less period!• Increased responsibility in terms of
preparation for sport.• Responsibility of scoring, officiating etc. whilst
at sport.• Did I mention, One less period??

What now?
• Have a think about the new model presented.• Ask questions.. In groups, complete the SWOT
analysis on the new sports model and write down any questions you may have. We will collate them, answer them (hopefully) and discuss them at the next staff meeting on 2nd September.
