Food FashionIt's called Food Design and it's the fashion of the moment. Chefs, designers, chemists, physicists and scientists analyse food from all different aspects and mould the food and utensils intooriginal shapes. A few examples? They're called Chocolate pencils, chocolate pencils that can be sharpened and then eaten.Froggetmee are the first easy to use 'chinese' chopsticks as theyhave the chopstick on one side and a spoon on the other. Thenthere's the Eat with your fingers, a fork, knife and spoon that you put on your fingers so you can eat with your hands withoutgetting dirty.

This month we’ve got a letter fromGiusy. Giusy is very, very shy. This is a problem that many of ushave, so let’s find out more.

Why doI blush*?

Dear Giusy, being shy is not an illness*, it is a verynatural feeling. Shy people are very sensitive people.Being sensitive does not mean you are not interestingor clever. When you feel uneasy around others, tellyourself that you are just as interesting and clever aseveryone else and that you have a different way ofshowing it. Think positive: the world is aninteresting place because we are all different. When you are with other people, listen to whatthey say and just say and do what you think isbest. Trust* yourself. When your friends makefun of you, laugh with them. Try to accept theway you are and little by little, everything willbecome easier. Take care,

Quality Star

The singer’s stage name, Shakira, in Arabicmeans Woman, full of grace, but it contains asense of gratitude since the name is derivedfrom the Arabic word Shukhran, meaning thank you.

Shakira was born in Columbia, her father isLebanese and her mother of mixed Spanish andItalian descent. She eventually moved toBogotá, the capital of Columbia.

She recorded her first album called, Magia(Magic), at the age of fourteen, but that andher second album, Peligro (Danger), werenot a success and she gave up her musiccareer for a time.

The 1998 album Dónde están losladrones? (Where are the thieves?) wassuch a success that she decided to startsinging in English. She practised herpronunciation by reading WaltWhitman poems out loud.

The famous writer Gabriel GarcíaMárquez described Shakira: “Shakira’smusic has a personal stamp that doesn’tsound like anyone else’s... one that seems tobe of her own invention.”

She recently became a UNICEF ambassador. Shehas maintained a simple lifestyle in spite of themoney and fame and now lives with her parentsin Miami.

Her real name is Shakira Isabel

Mebarak Ripoll, but she is better

known simply as Shakira, a singer

who has taken the world by storm

with her own very special style.

A look at

cheerleading

Yes, of course it looks a bit

silly the first time you see it. But

today cheerleading has become an

old and respected American

tradition, and many would like to

see it become a sport in itself. In

any case, no high school or college

basketball, football or even

baseball game would be the same

today without it. Even the British

have adopted it.

Sport

pyramids, cheerleading beganreceiving recognition as a seriousathletic activity as well. Training forcheerleading coaches becameavailable at summer cheerleadingcamps, and several colleges offeredscholarships.

Cheerleaders also increased theirinvolvement in community serviceprojects, and began receivingnational media recognition as one ofthe most important schoolleadership groups to promoteenthusiastic, positive attitudes andschool spirit within schools and thecommunity. Today, of course, cheerleading is a lot more thanyelling*. Every team now has its owncolours, costumes, movements, choreography, songs and stuntsdesigned to dazzle* the spectators. In fact, cheerleaders at Americanchampionship games like theRosebowl are as popularentertainment as the athletes andthe games themselves.

A person must be highly skilled* andcompetitive in order to achieve thehonoured and respected position of

cheerleader. In fact, some veryfamous and talented people havebeen cheerleaders, including formerUS President Dwight D. Eisenhower, actors Jimmy Stewart and KirkDouglas, and actresses Meryl Streep,Raquel Welch, and Cybil Shepard, just to name a few.

Believe it or not, cheerleading didnot really arrive in Britain untilAmerican Football officially came toBritain in 11998822. Today it’s gettingmore and more popular in Britain.Cheerleading is all about skill and itinvolves a lot of teamwork and trust!

The first organized, recorded cheer*was performed during a Princeton*college football game in the late1880's. More or less, it went: “Ray,Ray' Ray! TIGER, TIGER, SIS, SIS, SIS!BOOM, BOOM, BOOM! Aaaaah!PRINCETON, PRINCETON,PRINCETON!"

But it’s said that cheerleadingofficially began on November 2,1898 when Johnny Campbell, acollege student at the University ofMinnesota, stood before the crowdat a football game and directedthem in a famous yell still usedtoday: "Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar,Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity!Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!" In 1927, Willis Bugbee defined thespirit and meaning of cheerleading: "The cheerleader, where once wasmerely tolerated, is now a person ofreal estate*. His prestige is such thatat many schools and colleges hemust win his place in competitiveexamination."

Gradually, as student cheerleaders’athletic abilities increased ingymnastics*, partner stunts* and

In this issue we’re goingto look at a topic thatprobably involves everyone of us – trainers. Butwe’re not going to talkabout the big wellknown brands, we’regoing to look atBlackSpot, an ethical andearth-friendly brand.

Fairtrade is the name you

see on many food products

in the supermarket. Do you

know what it means?

Let’s find out together.

‘Fair trade’ is when the people who producesomething get the right amount of money forwhat they produce. ‘Trade’ means ‘commerce’:this is when a country sells its products to another country. For example, Argentina produceslots of coffee and sells it to other countries likeBritain. ‘Fair’ means ‘just’ or ‘right’.

What does it mean?

Poor continents, like Africa and South America, produce things which rich countries love to eatand drink, for example: chocolate, orangejuice, bananas and coffee. People in thesecountries have very small salaries*. Very often, their working conditions are very bad, forexample: they work 12 hours a day, when theyare sick they don’t get paid and sometimes thejobs they do are dangerous. It is very easy forpeople in rich countries, like Europe, to payvery little for these products because theydon’t cost very much to produce.

Fairtrade is a distributor, an organisationwhich buys products from poor countries and

sells them to rich countries. Fairtrade pays‘fair’ money for these products: not too much and not too little. The producers get the money they need to continue to produce and to have a better standard of life. The people who buy the products and eat them, get delicious food at a good price!

How does it work?

Where was Fairtrade invented?

What was the first Fairtrade product?
