Special File: Tour Skating
Ice Skating is a very popular sport in Sweden, so it is important to know some things
about it. Let’s see what it is!
What to know:
O Developed from a Dutch sport
O Practicable all around Stockholm, from
November to February.
O SSSK, the most important federation, was
founded in 1901. It counts 13.000 members.
O You can skate 1000km or more in a day, it is
very quick!
A few questions to: Per Alvfors, tour skating monitor at the SSSK (Stockholm Ice Skating Sailing and Touring Club)
SATW: What is the main interest of that sport? Why do Swedish people like it so much?
PA: Well, as you know, many people practice it, and the reason is very simple: you can easily practice! Stockholm is
built between a lake and the Baltic, so in winter the
frozen surface is very important, that is why in winter
you can skate almost everywhere.
SATW: What are the best spots to skate?
PA: Every place is good to visit, but the archipelago East from
the city is wonderful. Otherwise, you can do the trip from
North West to South East, it is a great experience.

Visit http://www.sssk.se/english/index.htm, the
SSSK site, where you can find some details about
the sport and the material needed.
One sport, one equipment: To practice tour skating, you need a little preparation. Of course, the first thing you
need is skates: they are sort of blades under shoes. Then, there are some essential security pieces of material: you
have to have two ice claws, in case you fall under ice, to come back on it. With this, you need a special suit, made
to protect you from cold water, and a floating aid. With this, a whistle to attract attention and a rescue rope are
used to throw you by the people you skate with: you can’t practice alone!

Practical Guide: How to do sport in Stockholm?
As in each city, at the first sight, it looks to be hard to practice any sports in Stockholm. According to Ms Lokvist
“Apart from doing ice skating in the winter and running in the summer, it’s hard to let of stream”. You need some
sports? You are bored to be a catch potato? This feature is for you!!!
I want to do a little sport.
You don’t have a lot of time to spend to do
sport? You’re an executive in an enormous
company?
Some ways are offered to you, you can bike to
work, apart from the cold weather, Stockholm is a
wonderful city for this. About 100km of bike lanes
can lead you everywhere in city from the old Gamla
Stan to Broma. These are clean, well maintained
and will make you going faster to work. You can use
your own bike or hire one of the town bikes (1). In
addition to this, your rolls of flesh from the winter
are going to disappear! Isn’t life wonderful?
In winter, poorly, it’s hard to bike since there are 40
cm of snow everywhere. You then have two
possibilities, to waste hours every morning in traffic
jams or to ski trough the town to your workplace.
You can ski either on bike lanes (there shouldn’t be
a lot of bikes owing to the snow) either on roads
when you’re in Gamla stan for instance. Good Ski!!
The town bikes

I want to become a professional player!
You know, it’s going to be hard. It doesn’t matter, we’ll give
you the keys to show you’re incredible talents to the world
(yes Sweden Got Talents ©) .
The first thing to do is to choose the sport you want to
practice, in Sweden you can easily access to a football club or
any sportive association, as the 20 % percent of Swedish who
belong to a sport club shows. If you want to do football, then
call The Swedish Football Association (1). It’s actually one of
the most popular sports in Sweden but national team is not
very successful in worldwide competitions. You want to win
world championships? Then join the Swedish Handball
Association (2), it has already won four world cups. You have
your chance. Once you have contacted the right association,
it’s easy to find a club in Stockholm, more than ones are
situated in.
Now you just have to practice, a lot, we hope to see you on TV
soon.
