That in itself is remarkable but it becomes even more so when you realise that Pete had to run in a 7th. extra lane. This was because he was away on interview when Heats Day was held. I am sure people will remember that there were two trees that grew each side of the running track at about 45 yds. from the start thus limiting the track to 6 proper lanes. L-R: J.C. Smith, G. Trueman and P. Lockett after the 100 yards race? New record set by Trueman of 10.00 secs. Hi Mac, I've just been reading about Geoff Trueman winning the 100yds. in a record time of 10.00sec. It is my recollection that Pete Lockett almost dead-heated with Geoff in that race. That in itself is remarkable but it becomes even more so when you realise that Pete had to run in a 7th. extra lane. This was because he was away on interview when Heats Day was held. the right-hand tree. With this handicap his run that day was phenomenal. I do believe that the teachers operating the mechanical stopwatches had a bit of difficulty separating the two times. Incidentally, during that 1960 season, Geoff was recorded at something of the order of 9.8secs. for 100yds. albeit running down a steep slope at a meeting in Sheffield. Hope these remembrances help. Yours, Geoff Cartledge Winners Of Athletic Trophies, 1960

Brian Moore Cup for Senior Boys 440 yards: J. C. Smith During this year's athletics season many records have been broken. On Sports Day, Ellen Toulson established three new Senior Girls' records in the 440 yards, Long Jump, and Hop, Step and Jump. Trueman's new record of 10 seconds for the 100 yards sprint was an outstanding achievement, while Smith's 5 ft. 7 in. High Jump raised the standard in this still further. Price were worthy winner of the Championship Cup with Guest runners-up. The Standards Competition was closely contested but Holgate's all-round strength eventually brought them the Cup. The boys' athletics teams have enjoyed a fairly successful season so far. Their best performance was their convincing win over Doncaster G.S. and Doncaster Technical School. At this meeting four School records were beaten: Senior High Jump, 5 ft. 10.25ins. by Smith; Senior 220 yds., 21.7 secs. by Trueman; Senior Shot Putt, 41 ft. 7 in. by Snookes; and Intermediate 220 yards 24.5 secs. by Gibson. In their two other meetings the teams have been placed second and third. I would like to thank all the boys in the teams for their unfailing support during the current season, and to thank Mr. Tate for the work he has done in arranging the athletics matches this year. Many young athletes have come to the fore this season with promising performances. I hope they will continue to improve, and maintain the high standard of competition which Hemsworth Grammar School has always set. J.C. Smith, Boys' Athletics Captain.

40th Annual Sports Day, 17th May 1961

Above is Ellen Toulson photographed by Mr Reed on the Fortieth Annual Sports Day, 17th May 1961. The event was the Senior Girls' High Jump. The competitors were: Cynthia Parton 45, Ellen Toulson 36, Christine Gaskell 26, Sheila Kelsall 22, Irene Thorpe 40. Irene's winning height was 4ft 3ins. In the photo, Irene is on the left, Christine has her hand on her head, Ellen is flying through the air, and Cynthia and I are noticeable by our absences! We both took off from our left legs, and so would be standing off to the right of the picture. Ten new records were set up at the 46th annual Inter-House Sports Day. Talbot won the House Championship Cup with 363 points, Price (314 points) being second, Holgate (264) third, and Guest (235) fourth. Heading the list of record breakers was Joan Winder (Talbot) who beat the previous best in four intermediate events. She clipped three fifths of a second off the 80 yards hurdles with a time of 12.2 seconds, returning 11.7 seconds for the 100 yards to beat the old record by five tenths of a second, knocked four fifths of a second off the 150 yards with a time of 17.8 seconds, and completed a wonderful exhibition of running by clocking 2 mins. 41.5 seconds, in the 880 yards to beat the previous best by 12 seconds. The Yorkshire Schools javelin champion, Marrion Pearson (Price) in the senior javelin threw 116 ft. 1 ins. to top the record she set up last year by 3ft. 5 ins., and clipped one fifth of a second off the senior 80 yards hurdles with a time of 13 seconds. Dianne Sell (Talbot), another County Champion added 6ft. 5 ins to the senior discus with a throw of 98ft. 11 ins., while in the junior girls’ discus, S.
