Principal’s Report

We are half way through the term and the calendar is looking very full. This week we commenced our ‘Learning in Action’ lessons in our makeshift classroom in Church Street. The children have really enjoyed being able to share their learning with their family and the wider community. It has been pleasing to see the number of people who have come to watch. Thank you to everyone for adhering to the COVID restrictions. Yesterday we were honoured to host a visit from Rick Persse, Chief Executive of the Department for Education, and Caroline Croser-Barlow, Executive Director Early Years and Child Development, to discuss the impact that the VIC/SA border lockdown is having on our families and school community. The lockdown came into effect this morning, meaning some of our students and their families are unable to attend school. It is important they continue to know they are a part of our community . Whist we will provide supported home learning for them, as well as opportunities for them to engage with their peers, it would be beneficial if students/families could also make contact with them from time to time (email, phone call, text message, messenger, Facebook etc.).

We continue to face some challenging times, and the uncertainty of not knowing how long this will continue creates additional worry and stress for everyone. During these times it is important we support each other, check-in with our friends/neighbours, and keep our children close.

Kind regards,

Anna

Well done to all of our Sapsasa basketballers who headed over to Millicent for the annual Mid South East Sapsasa Basketball tournament. As usual the competition was very tough and although we didn’t win a lot of games we were competitive throughout the day. Congratulations to Millicent North, Robe and St Anthonys-they will represent our district at the regional basketball tournament on August 28th in Mt Gambier.

Well done also to our students who represented our school in the recent Sapsasa Hot Shots Tennis tournament which was held at Penola Primary. It was the first time this event has been conducted and it was really pleasing to witness how much the kids improved with both their tennis skills and their social skills as the day progressed. There were two divisions (Year 7 and Year 5/6) and Penola Primary did enough to win both of them!

In Week 7 (August 31st, and September 1st & 2nd) we will be hosting coaches from Baseball SA who will be running specialist PE lessons with all classes. Lessons will focus on skills associated with T-ball, softball, and baseball.

Writer’s Workshop Writing Workshop is a pedagogical approach, strongly grounded in research, where the goal for every student is to

become a powerful and self-directed writer and one who writes for a variety of purposes. Writing Workshop aims for every child to think like a writer and to see themselves as a writers. ‘Bookmaking’ and ‘Writer’s Notebook’

are both ways to implement the Writer’s Workshop Pedagogy. Lisa Burman, 2020. Writer’s Workshop gives authentic

meaning to students’ work. It is open

-ended with multiple entry points so

every child sees themselves as a writer regardless of

their writing ability. Young students

(including kindy children) start with

Book Making and then progress to

Writer’s Notebook. The Workshop

structure includes explicit

intentional teaching (mini lesson),

independent writing time, 1:1

conferencing, and reflection.

Spare Clothes During the colder months we tend to use more of the spare clothes that we have available here at school and at the moment we are running very low on the amount of spare clothes that we have. If you have any spare clothes that may have gone home with your child/ren, would you please return them? Or if you have any spare clothes between sizes 5-12 that you would like to donate, please bring them into the front office. They will be greatly appreciated. Thank-you.

SRC Class Representatives Term 3 and 4 2020

Jace Minge Vice President

This term we welcomed new class representatives to our SRC Committee. We also held applications for the position of Vice President, which was won by Jace Minge. We hope everyone benefits from their time on our committee. This term our focus is to review the Behaviour Management Policy. At our meeting last week, we decided to unpack our school motto - Respect, Responsibility and Inclusivity. We are choosing one word at a time and coming up with activities which we can do back in our classes to find out what our students understand about these concepts so we can develop a whole school understanding and how we show them in our daily interactions at our school. On the last day of this term we will be having a casual clothes day to raise money for the Men’s Shed which kindly donated two more picnic tables for our junior primary students. This will be a great way we can help support a local Penola community organisation. We are looking forward to a productive second half of the year! 2020 Science Week Foundation and Year 1 students have continued their exploration of structures this week. We watched a video of a scientist discussing the work of engineers and the ways they plan their tasks and materials. Using masking tape, magazines and newspapers, Ms Bohmer’s

students had to construct strong towers, and Mrs Skeer’s students

made boats (inspired by a massive hail and rain storm during the

early stages of our session!). Here are some of the photos showing

our endeavours.

On Monday 17th August our Penola Primary Environment Group

headed to the Naracoorte Caves to undertake Earthkeeper’s

Training. This is usually a 2-day camp. However, due to COVID-19

restrictions it was condensed into a 1-day event. Our students

took part in different activities which reinforced the idea that all

living things on earth are connected. We learned about

munchlines, specks, and change, using our senses to experience

a world that we are often too busy to appreciate. Over the

course of the day we earned our ‘K’ key and worked part of the

way towards our ‘E’ key. Now we need to implement changes at

home to lessen our impact on the environment. Our

environment leaders were positive and enthusiastic participants

and excellent representatives of our school. Thanks guys!....and

keep a look out around the school as we are planting lots of

native grasses to improve our nature play areas.
