ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

There are so many things to talk about and share with the school

community and we are only four weeks into Term 2! Work continued

on the building program over the school holiday break, and it was

great to start the term with significant landscaping completed.

Athletics Carnival

Our annual Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday 18 April. It was

a great day with fantastic weather, great competition and students

and staff working together with great house spirit and enthusiasm.

Well done to Rafter House on being the victors on the day.

Open Night

Thursday 26 April was our Open Night and what an outstanding

success it was. The school facilities, programs, staff and students were

showcased. We were very pleased to hear a number of comments

about how impressive our students are, how proud our staff are to

work at our school, the quality of every teaching area, and the positive

energy in our school. A special thank you to all staff and students who

contributed to producing such a dynamic evening.

It’s not OK to be away

Our Year Level Coordinators and teachers are becoming increasingly

concerned about the number of students who are arriving late to

school and students who are absent for reasons that are inappropriate

such as their birthday or a shopping trip. Being punctual at school

needs to be a family commitment. The school day commences at

8:35am with a bell that signals students should be at their lockers and

moving off to class.

Colds and Other Bugs!

The exception to the above is when a student is ill and our appeal to

keep sick students at home is a somewhat regular request! Please

don’t send your son or daughter to school if he/she is unwell. Schools

are places where cross infection happens very easily. If your child has

a cold or stomach upset then they will be passing it on to their

classmates and teachers. The sick bay is a facility that is not staffed full

time, and is provided to monitor students temporarily, until a relative

can come and collect them. Your understanding in this matter will

benefit your own child as well as the rest of the college community.

Attitudes to School Survey

The student Attitudes to School Survey provides valuable feedback to the school and informs on how students

perceive their learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom, as well as their interactions with peers and

teachers. For 2018, students will undertake this survey online on Wednesday 9 May. All students will be provided with

their individual login information and will be given the opportunity to undertake the survey at school. It is important

that students consider each question carefully and respond based on their general perception of school, not on a

particular class.

Exam Period

As we approach the exam period, teachers are finalising work tasks with students and regularly informing parents of

overdue work and opportunities for students to catch up. Please check Compass to ensure that your child is up to

date. All students will be provided with exam protocols and an exam timetable. The examination period will be

conducted from Monday 4 June to Friday 8 June. The GAT will be held on Wednesday 13 June for all students who are

undertaking a Unit 3/4 subject. Students must arrive at school by 9.30am and be in full school uniform. Mobile phones

and calculators must be left at home or in lockers and only clear water bottles may be brought to the examination

centre. Wednesday 13 June is Report Writing day, therefore only students undertaking the GAT will be required at

school.

Coles Sport for Schools Program

A huge thank you to the whole school community for the support during the Coles Sports for

Schools Program which finished recently. The collected vouchers have been mailed out

and we await confirmation of our efforts. We are advised the Sport equipment will

arrive at the college in Term 3 if we are successful.

Students on School Council

Due to recent changes introduced by the Education Department, two students are now invited to become full

members of School Council. These students will be chosen by the student community, following the normal ballot

and election process. This commitment will involve the students attending approximately four meetings per term

and they will become involved in key decision making of the college. Students are advised to keep an eye out for

more information on Compass as it becomes available.

Curriculum Day - Wednesday 23 May 2018

Dear parents and carers, The Mullauna teaching staff will be participating in a full day of professional learning on Wednesday 23 May 2018. This will be a student free day for all students UNLESS enrolled in a Unit 3/4 subject. Students enrolled in Unit 3/4 subjects will attend to sit their practice GAT (General Achievement Test) and are required to attend between 9:30am till 12:15pm.

In recent years, Mullauna has been implementing targeted school improvement initiatives. One of our key improvement priorities has been focussed on progressively implementing common approaches to class-room instruction school-wide from years 7 to 12.

The focus of our Curriculum Day will be two pronged: 1. Allowing staff time to complete training in the areas of anaphylaxis and mandatory reporting 2. Further develop their understanding of the Department’s ‘High Impact Teaching Strategies’ resource.

NAPLAN 2018

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is scheduled for the mornings

of Tuesday 15 May, Wednesday 16 May and Thursday 17 May. Students in years 7 and 9 will be

assessed in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and

Numeracy (please note, in 2018 there is only one Numeracy test).

NAPLAN results provide an important measure of how all Australian students are performing in

literacy and numeracy. However, the NAPLAN report is just one component of Mullauna College’s

assessment and reporting practices. This does not replace the extensive and ongoing assessments

made by the English and Mathematics teachers regarding each student’s performance and progress.

TIMETABLE

All years 7 and 9 students are required to sit the NAPLAN tests. Students will need to bring a note

written by a parent/carer to officially request a withdrawal from a particular test.

Musical Notes

Our music department is running full steam ahead as always. All the large ensembles are busy preparing for the mas-

sive Mid-Year/Year 7 debut Concert on May 31. The concert will start at 7.00pm in our Performing Arts Centre. As this

is a production year, all music events will be planned so that students and staff concerned are able to focus on produc-

tion. This means our Mid-Year Concert in term 2 is later than usual and will be a longer concert. During Term 3 all en-

sembles will still run, as not every music student is involved in production, however where there are clashes, the pro-

duction will take priority after the May 31 concert.

This year we have 30 students participating in three different ensembles for NEVR concert, the Region run event at

Hamer Hall in the city on May 22. Rehearsals are underway and the goal is that in just two or three rehearsals and

home practice, the music will be mastered! Thank you to all the parents for supporting this amazing event. Tickets are

on sale from www.artscentremelbourne.com.au with students receiving a notice at their rehearsals. The dress code for

all performers black pants/skirt and a black shirt – all black. If girls are wearing a skirt, please ensure you also wear

black stockings. Parents, your support is appreciated in helping your child prepare for this concert especially concern-

ing the dress code. We hope you enjoy watching your child be a super star on one of the most amazing stages in Mel-

bourne.

International Student Forum

Three of our students from Mullauna College—two International students and one local student attended the Internatial Student Forum. Terrence Wang ( Year 12), Cindy CAI (year 11), and Sophia Salerno ( Year 10) together with Mr Victor Lee, attended the forum at the State Library Melbourne. This was a platform for students from across Victo-ria to come together to share their ideas on how the International Student program can be enhanced to help develop global citizenship.

The theme for the Forum was Empowering Student Voice to Cultivate Global Citizenship and facilitated our students working with local and international students in a highly interactive program. Through sharing experiences students were able to recognise opportunities available within their school and the wider community to grow their Global Citizenship potential, and identify areas that could be improved with collaboration across the school community.

EMR INTERMEDIATE SOFTBALL

The Intermediate Girls softball team faced strong opposition in all

three of it’s games at the EMR finals and set the goals of being

competitive and improving our performance, the focus of the day.

Game one was a disappointing performance against an athletic

Camberwell High School team, and was a wake up call for how

tough the challenges were going to be. However, this inspired a

stirring “come from behind” win in game two as we beat Wantirna

College 13 to 4!

A respectable 16 to 7 loss to eventual champions, Brentwood

Secondary College rounded out what was a terrific day of softball

with our goals being met. Well done to all team members—Mikayla

Jones, Montannah Shanks, Madison Clarke, Finn Wharton, Jessica

Thai, Alison Sar, Abigail Plant, Madison Murphy, Nikita Green and

Rina Boyd.

Sport Coordinator

Senior Boys Netball

On Monday 30 April Mullauna had two boys’ teams competing in

the Interschool Netball competition. The teams finished 2nd and

4th overall. It was a great day with excellent participation.

Thankyou to Bree Silver for her assistance in coaching.

Community Corner

Every two years, School Crossings Victoria, holds an awards night to honour the dedication and hard work put into the

Community by School Crossing Supervisors from all over the

state. It is that time again where we ask all schools to promote the award and ask the school community to nominate the

supervisor they feel is worthy of being recognised, and may even be judged Victoria’s School Crossing Supervisor of the Year.

What an honour that title will be for one of our

dedicated supervisors.

The 2015/2016 award night was held in Preston in 2016 with the winner being Robyn Sabljak from Murrindindi Shire Council.

The night itself, was wonderful, 250 attended with over 700

nominations received, and there was a lot of pride in the room.

Nomination forms are available at reception.

Nominations close on May 25, 2018.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact

Dreena Lawrence-Gray (Chairperson) on 0490 017 340.

Your support will be greatly appreciated.
