Princ ipal’s Report

Advent

God of hope,

who brought love into

this world,

be the love that dwells

between us.

God of hope,

who brought peace into

this world,

be the peace that

dwells between us.

God of hope,

who brought joy into

this world,

be the joy that

dwells between us.

God of hope,

the rock we stand upon,

be the centre,

the focus of our lives

always,

and particularly

this Advent time.

Over the past two years we’ve experienced a mini baby boom amongst

our staff. To date we’ve welcomed ten babies with another three on the

way! So we all know well the joy and anticipation that this time of waiting

brings. Everyone is excited. Expectant mums and dads are busily preparing

for the birth. We drive them crazy with our questions and tick off mile-

stones as we count down to the birth. This waiting, preparation and antici-

pation is not dissimilar to the season of Advent. We are watching, waiting

and preparing for the birth of Jesus. I hope that in this season of Advent

you find the time and space to truly prepare for Christmas; for the peace,

joy and hope that this season brings.

Catherine McAuley Pins

Throughout the year students have many opportunities to be involved in

learning beyond the classroom and to contribute to the community. This

happens through service, leadership, fundraising, sport, the Arts, extension

programs and clubs. I’d like to thank all students for the way they’ve par-

ticipated and been involved in 2016.

Each year we recognise students who’ve made an outstanding contribu-

tion to the school and broader community with a Catherine McAuley pin.

Points towards this award are accumulated throughout the year and about

10 students at each level receive a pin at the final school assembly.

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2016 Catherine McAuley pin. You

are indeed people who make a difference and your willingness to lead,

challenge, put in and to be part of things is very much appreciated. Thank

you.

Thank you to all the families who were able to join us for the assembly and

morning tea. Your presence, support and encouragement are very much

appreciated.

Recipients of the Catherine McAuley Pin for 2016

are……

Bolis Nyok, Lynda Vu, Emily Aguila, Danika Alwyn, Destiny Eustace, Julie Le,

Janaya Nheu, Tina Le, Sharelle Lynch, Roshith Thanthulage, Xuan Dien Vo, Carl

Long Tan Leadership Award

Each year the Australian Defence Force provides a schol-

arship to recognise a Year 10 student who demonstrates

outstanding leadership and teamwork within both the

school and broader community. This student must also

demonstrate a strong commitment to values such as

respect for others and strive to always do their best.

Congratulations to Kathleene Mendoza who is this year’s

recipient of the Long Tan Leadership Award. Throughout

the year Kathleene has managed to balance the respon-

sibilities of being Social Justice Captain (Environment)

with a strong commitment to her studies. She is a talent-

ed young woman who has demonstrated strong initia-

tive, exceptional leadership and the ability to make a

difference in our community and beyond. Petty Officer

Andrea Murphy (Navy) presented Kathleene with her

award and a prize of $250.

Caltex All Rounder Award

This award recognises one student at each school for

their all-round contribution to the school and the com-

munity. This year the award was given to Jasmine Paras.

As well as putting effort into her studies, Jasmine is an

exceptional young woman who has represented the

school in sport, is a leader within our community and

always acts in accord with our school values. Congratula-

tions Jasmine.

Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars

Program

Congratulations to Glydel Lawang who has been accept-

ed into the University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow

Young Scholars Program. The Kwong Lee Down Young

Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program

for high-achieving students.

This award is richly deserved as Glydel is a dedicated and

talented student who always endeavours to do her abso-

lute best. We will recognise Glydel’s achievement at the

MacKillop Awards assembly at the beginning of 2017.

Loaves and Fishes Food Bank

A highlight of our final assembly was the presentation of

a cheque for $3,000 to Charlie from the ‘Loaves and

Fishes Food Bank’ at Holy Eucharist. Throughout the year

students and staff help out at the food bank on Fridays

where an amazing group of volunteers collects, parcels

and distributes 200+ food packages each week. Where

possible, produce from our school gardens is added to

food parcels or sold after mass to raise funds for staples

like rice.

During 2016 the Student Leaders and the St Vinnie’s

group combined their many talents to raise funds for

the food bank. This is an outstanding effort and I’d like

to thank and congratulate all involved.

Charlie was absolutely delighted to receive the funds

which will be put to good use, however, he was also

very appreciative of the assistance given on Fridays. For

the volunteers it is heartening to know that there are

young people ready to step up and continue what

they’ve begun.

Year 7 Giving Tree Appeal

Continuing the theme of thinking of others – the Year 7

classes are collecting Christmas gifts to be distributed

by St Vincent de Paul. This year we are focussing on

Christmas foods like puddings and cakes, and gifts for

young people who are 5 – 12 years of age. However, all

gifts are welcome. I encourage you to support this very

worthwhile work and thank the Year 7 House Council

for leading this initiative.

School Captains 2017

On behalf of the school community I would like to thank

our 2016 School Captains: Glydel Lawang and Nam

Nguyen, and the Vice Captains: Patricia Dabu and Hans

Garay for their great work as leaders in our school.

Throughout the year they’ve contributed in a very real

and practical way to making our school a great place

and in ensuring that students ‘have a voice’ on many

issues. I thank them for their time, generosity and will-

ingness to serve our community.

It is with great pleasure that I can now announce that

our School Captains for 2017 are Jocelyn Cuzcano and

Jeremy Lawang. Our Captains will be assisted in their

role by Caitlyn Gonsalves, Piath Monoah, Vincent Le and

Xavier Bondoc who will be Vice Captains. They are a

talented and impressive group of young people and I

look forward to working with them next year.

We were privileged to have fine field of candidates for

these roles and the final decision was a difficult one.

Thank you to all who applied for this important leader-

ship role and Tina Bui, Jordan Brodie and Glydel Lawang

for all their work as members of the selection panel.

Farewell Year 10 2016

At our final assembly our Year 10 2016 students were

farewelled by our 2017 School Captains. Thank you to

Page 3: 2 December Principal’s Report

Jocelyn and Jeremy who spoke so well about the contri-

butions the Year 10 students have made over the past

four years. They highlighted the leadership, hospitality

and school spirit the Year 10 students have shown, and

the sense of peace, welcome and inclusion they’ve

helped to create in our school.

Glydel and Nam responded on behalf of the Year 10

students, thanking staff, students and families for their

support and reflecting on their time at the College; the

many terrific experiences they’ve had and how these

have helped shape who they are today.

We have included a copy of Glydel and Nam’s farewell

with this newsletter. It is well worth reading.

This evening we farewell Year 10 2016 more formally at

the Year 10 mass and Graduation.

Best Wishes

Next week our Intermediate Boys’ Basketball team will

compete in the National Schools Basketball Champion-

ships. Members of the school community may remem-

ber that this team won the Victorian Division 2 champi-

onship earlier in the year.

We wish the team well for the championship, know that

they will represent us well and are certainly very proud

of all they have achieved so far.

Connection - Renewal: Shared Stories

Anthology 2016

The 2016 edition of Shared Stories was launched last

week. This is an annual anthology of writing and art work

by students in 22 Catholic primary and secondary

schools. The anthology forms part of the permanent

collection of the State Library of Victoria.

For writers and artists there is no greater honour than to

have your work published. Once again a large number of

students from our school have had their work accepted

for publication. Congratulations to all who have had

work included. This is an outstanding achievement. Well

done.

This is the 11th

edition of Shared Stories. The anthology

was first published in 2006 with funding from the Felton

Bequest. The concept was developed in response to the

Cronulla riots in Sydney, as an authentic way of sharing

perspectives across diverse groups.

From 72 pages it has expanded to a massive tomb of

573 pages. It is now almost too heavy for bedtime read-

ing! It is an exceptional collection of writing and art

work.

Thank you to Ms Daniela Ibrido, the English and Visual

Arts teachers for supporting student involvement in

this activity, and to Ms Flora Petruccelli for accompany-

ing students to the launch.

Lost Property

We have several items of lost property in the school

office. If any student has lost an item of uniform you

are asked to see Anne Stokie before the end of the

year.

Items not collected by the last day of Term 4 will be

placed into the second hand uniform pool.

It is concerning that a large number of these items of

uniform cannot be returned to their owner as they are

not named!

Report Preparation Day:

Friday 02 December

Whilst assessment and finalisation of reports continue

into the last week of term 4, tomorrow, Friday 02 De-

cember has been set aside for staff to mark exams and

to begin the preparation of reports. Year 10 students

will have finished and students in Years 7 - 9 will not be

required at school.

End of Year Arrangements for

Years 7 - 9

Monday 05 – Wednesday 07 December are normal

school days and students are expected to attend in full

uniform, with the required books and prepared to final-

ise their work.

On Thursday 08 December students will enjoy the an-

nual Ball Sports Day. This is the last chance for Houses

to gain points towards the 2016 Williams Cup.

Students in Years 7 – 9 finish school on Friday 09 De-

cember. They are required to be at school by 8.40am

(normal time) and will be dismissed at 12.15pm.

End of Year Mass

Our mass for the end of the 2016 school year will be

celebrated at Sacred Heart Church on Friday 09 De-

cember at 10.00am.

We warmly invite families to join us for this very special

celebration.

Newsletter

The newsletter is published fortnightly and distributed

on Day 5 (Friday Week 1). Students will have a chance

to read it before placing it in their diary to be taken

home to parents that evening.

The final newsletter will be mailed home on Tuesday 20

December

The newsletter can also be accessed on Friday morning

(Day 5) on the College website at:

Year 10 Farewell Speech 2016

Good Morning Staff, Teachers, Parents and Students of Catholic Regional College St. Albans,

We come to the conclusion of our annual McAuley Assembly, and I, Nam Nguyen, along with Glydel Lawang, would like to take this time to say a farewell on behalf of the 2016 Year 10's of Catholic Regional College St. Albans.

As the year approaches to an end, so does our long unforgettable journey at CRC. Looking back, as we begin to part ways, the experiences, values and mind-set gained at CRC will forever assist us in our strive for success.

I hope, that by the end of this speech, younger year levels will take in our wisdom as Year 10's and use it as motivation to flourish themselves and continue our legacy.

Like many here today, we began high school as children; seeking new experiences, wanting to build mean-ingful memories and relationships with others, young individuals who are full of hope and eager to explore the years to come…yet totally directionless. Through the guidance of CRC's incredible staff and teachers, unified and caring school community and most of all the support from our peers. It has allowed us to exit CRC as developed, matured and determined young adult, who are ready to tackle the challenges to come in the future.

The most important and valuable lesson that this college has taught us is to appreciate our own individual story. A story made up of significant experiences and memories due to our talents, characteristics and val-ues.

Our peers combined with our experiences at Catholic Regional College St.Albans have definitely given us the gift of memories that we shall always cherish and bring with us. These memories make up stories that we have made for ourselves and for our school; stories that embody who we are as individuals, our triumphs and defeats, our joys and sadness, but most of all our hopes and dreams for the future…

These stories would not have been possible without Ms. Utri, Ms. Cini, Mr. Quinn, the teachers and staff of CRC for guiding us throughout-what I would say our- ‘messy four years’ , and assisting us in building strong relationships with each other, nurturing us and enabling us to grow, preparing us for the real world, encouraging us and helping us to pursue our dreams, and most of all allowing us to create and express our own story here at this school, and so I would like to specially thank you all.

And so, for the Year 10’s our stories end here, yet we still possess the potential to create even more throughout our lives.

For the rest of the students here, I would like to encourage you all to continue in crafting your own excep-tional and unique stories here at this school.

Thank you once again and God Bless.
