We are aware that many students involved in this tragedy last year, are yet to speak to anyone about it. Our Hauora team, based in our Tautoko Rangatahi centre has available to students; Counsellors, a Nurse, a Doctor and a Social Worker. Staff and students acted calmly and responded to the instructions given with regard to the possibility of a further earthquake and the need to evacuate to higher ground if a tsunami was likely. For most students it was business as usual, classes continued with no disruption to their learning, while many of the Whakatāne schools were evacuated from their sites. Kia Ora Koutou

Nau mai ki te Kura Tuarua o Tarawera. Welcome to Tarawera High School.

E omaki atu nei a reo rahiri ki a koutou e tangi tikapa ana mō to tātou tama i riro atu nei ki tua a paerau

kotahi tau ki muri. He rangi ka hura ake ai te kahu-mōtea, ā kia hoki ngā mahara ki a ia me tōna wā i

waenganui i a tātou.

We were honoured and privileged to be celebrating the life of Ethan Fitzpatrick on Friday 19th March at

7.30am on the anniversary of his passing. Staff, students, past and present, whānau, emergency services

and Kaumatua joined us at the end of our staffroom, as we unveiled a plaque, planted a tree and shared

our memories of Ethan’s life.

Every year students and staff from every school will be faced with the death of someone they know, and

will be forced to cope with loss while continuing their work/studies. How a student expresses grief will vary

according to their developmental level, their concept of death, and their ability to self-assess and express

feelings through language. We are aware that many students involved in this tragedy last year, are yet to

speak to anyone about it. Our Hauora team, based in our Tautoko Rangatahi centre has available to

students; Counsellors, a Nurse, a Doctor and a Social Worker. Our staff are also available to ākonga and

whānau, as a resource to support and āwhi those around us during this difficult time.

Earthquake/Tsunami/Evacuation The recent events on Friday 12th March saw the school’s emergency response plans put into place with regards to the early morning

earthquake that was felt, a possible Tsunami and the need to evacuate if required. However many of these natural disasters did not

eventuate for our Kawerau schools and in fact we prepared ourselves to receive evacuees from Whakatāne.

Staff and students acted calmly and responded to the instructions given with

regard to the possibility of a further earthquake and the need to evacuate to

higher ground if a tsunami was likely. For most students it was business as usual,

classes continued with no disruption to their learning, while many of the

Whakatāne schools were evacuated from their sites.

We were delighted to be able to host the Coastlands preschool in our Teen

Parent Centre on the day, after they were evacuated from Coastlands. Along

with them, we invited in members of the public from Coastlands and two Public

Health nurses and their families unable to get to their destinations.

Thank you to all our staff and ākonga who showed āwhina to our visitors. We are glad

preschoolers, their staff and all members of the Coastlands community who were with us that

day arrived back home safely.

Uniform Vouchers Thank You to all the parents for a

great start to the year, our

students look great in their

uniform. As previous ly

advertised all year 7 students

who attended in the first two

weeks of school are eligible for a

uniform voucher to the value of

$150. These are now available

for collection at the school

office.

Visitors to School There should be no visitors entering the school

grounds. If you wish to see your child please

report to the office and we will have them

come to you.

First Aid The Outdoor Education students,

TPEC students as well as two staff

members took part in this Outdoor

First Aid course to gain 7 level 3

credits. The company used was

PEAK safety. There was a lot of

hands on learning with different

scenarios set up for the first aiders

to practice the skills they had

learnt.

Outdoor Education The Outdoor Education classes went fishing at Thornton this

week targeting some kahawai. Thornton is known for the

kahawai run but unfortunately our Wednesday class must

have got the tides wrong as we only managed to catch two

kahawai. The following day however was a fishing frenzy as all

our students managed to catch kai for their whānau.
