all share is a strong work ethic.“These kids are putting in a lot of time

when not in practice,” he noted. “They areout there playing on weekends and workingat it when not at team practice.

“And I’m not just talking about the upper-classmen. I mean the seventh, eighth andninth graders as well – across the board, theyare all out there working hard to get better.”

Koenen said one of the goals he has for hisplayers is that they play with more consisten-cy as the season goes along.

“It’s all about bettering the scores,” hesaid. “Chipping and putting is a big factor; ofcourse, hitting the ball well and keeping it inthe fairway is also big.”

The team does not have an official captainthis season, instead relying on the leadershipof seniors Dylan Schuth, Mitchell Benekeand Alex Schrader. Schuth and Beneke havebeen a part of the team since seventh grade.

The Panthers opened their season at homelast week and are scheduled to return toGlencoe Country Club on Wednesday, May4.

By that point, and as the season runs tocompletion, Koenen hopes that his golferswill see their scores lower as their confi-dence rises.

“It’s all about getting better every day,” hesaid. “I keep saying it, but it’s so true – workhard, get better every day.”

Spring is here

Spring is such a beautiful time of the year. The earth is awakened from its deep winter slumber to be reminded that it hasa job to do, it must prepare itself to produce another crop of vegetables, grain, fruit and livestock. It is such a marveloustime of the year that every one of our senses is taken over by it. Who has not been delighted by the smell of the earth as

farmer after farmer tills the soil, preparing and caressing it so that it will be ready for the seeds that will shortly be entombed inits richness? Our ears are awakened to the sound of songbirds calling for a mate and building nests so they might raise anotherlittle family. Our hands are dirtied as they feel the richness of the soil where we plant little gardens filled with vegetables andflowers. The sight of flocks of geese heading north, of leaves bursting forth, anxious to turn their faces to the sun and wavehello to each of us as they dance about in the breezes, are a delight to our eyes. Then there is the sight of newly hatched chicks, wobbly, frisky calves as they dance about in the sunlight, finally freed from their mothers’ wombs after a nine month wait. Whodoesn’t delight in checking the garden or flower bed to see if the newly planted seeds or the perennials have peeked their headsout of the ground to assure us that life has once again conquered death?

Spring is such a glorious time of the year. New life is springing up all around us. It almost seems as though God Himself haswritten the proof of the resurrection into spring. We celebrated the resurrection of Jesus about one month ago, but nature is cele-brating it all spring. Life is springing forth from the ground. It is almost as if the whole earth is full of joy and praising God forthe defeat of death. Each kernel of corn, each little round soybean seed buried in the earth dies so that it might come back to lifein a new and more glorious fashion. I like to think of all of spring as God’s great reminder to all of us that His Son, Jesus, didnot remain buried in a grave, but rose anew on Easter Sunday to proclaim His victory over death. That thought makes springeven more glorious than it already is.
