We’re not a real varsity-experienced team. For the amount of varsity experi- ence we had coming back, I think we did fairly well.” Finishing with a 7-15 overall record, DeCorsey said injuries and lineup changes hampered some of his play- ers. “There wasn’t always continuity, and our inexperience showed,” DeCorsey said. “We weren’t consis- tent. We’d play well for a set, and then not play well at all ... Starting from their own 35-yard line, GSL answered back in just three min- utes and 17 seconds, when Jake Stuedemann got around the right side of the line, scoring a 32-yard touch- down. The score was evened at 7-7 after the extra point. GSL had a chance to take an early lead when Bennett Bielke intercepted Austin Swenson's pass on the second play of SLP's ensuing drive, which he returned 17 yards to the SLP 48. “I had the outside guy and he just overthrew him,” Bielke said of the clutch play. “It (the ball) kind of got caught up in the lights a little bit, so I had to make an adjustment. He just kind of overthrew it and I took it down the field.” But the GSL offense could not capi- talize, turning the ball over on downs early in the second half on the SLP 29- yard line after getting stuffed on fourth- and-one. The teams went into halftime with GSL in front 14-13 as the rain started to come down. Both offenses were kept in check in a third quarter that resulted in no scor- ing. The game got interesting in the fourth quarter, as SLP went up 21-14 when Ejodamen Ejiya scored with a little over eight minutes remaining in the game. A steady dose of Stuedemann and Dalton Clouse drove GSL down to the SLP 5-yard line, where Stuedemann scored his second touchdown of the evening. Deciding to go for the win with a two-point conversion, quarterback Keaton Anderson rolled to his left after a play-action fake. Tanner Grack was open in the end zone, but the pass bounced off his chest with a defender nearby, and GSL lost as the score re- mained 21-20. “We wanted to go for the win,” head coach Scott Tschimperle said of going for two instead of kicking the extra point. “Dominic’s (Bondhus) leg was kind of hurting. He got ran into on the last extra point ... I think we had our best play that we called on the two point conversion. We had enough mis- direction going on to throw off the de- fense, but we just came up a little short.” Tschimperle did say he’s “proud of the way our kids played. I thought we held our own against them.” One area he said the team could im- prove upon is short yardage situations. “After Bennett’s (Bielke) intercep- tion, they stuffed us on fourth-and- one,” Tschimperle said. “We should never not get a fourth-and-one in my opinion.” Waconia comes to town this week for homecoming after notching its first win of the season last week with a 17- 10 win over Holy Family. Tschimperle said his team wants the No. 1 seed come sections, and knows that in order to attain that, it’ll have to win out the rest of the season. “The kids want that No. 1 seed, be- cause there’s such an advantage not having to play on that Tuesday,” Tschimperle said. “They want that Wright County Conference champi- onship, and they know they’ve got to win outright to get it.” GSL currently sits atop the WCC’s West Division with a 3-0 conference record, and are 4-2 overall with only a Panther CC does well at Duluth Inv. 7-0 loss ends season for Panther tennis team Girls’ soccer gets first win of the season GSL gets clipped by Spring Lake Park, 21-20 Section B Wednesday, October 9, 2013 The McLeod County Chronicle S ports Emily Thalmann (center) is swarmed by her teammates after scoring Glencoe-Silver Lake’s third goal of the first half against Worthington on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Despite the promise of earn-ing a tie two weeks ago, theGlencoe-Silver Lake boys’ soc-cer team’s season came to anend Monday night in Waseca, losing 11-0.

The Panthers finish with an0-15-1 record overall, and were0-10 against Wright CountyConference teams.

GSL dropped its last threegames of the season, beginningwith 9-0 loss to the WorthingtonTrojans on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Suffering a 9-2 loss to theHoly Family Fire to close outthe regular season, freshmanJacob Fehrenbach scored theteam’s two goals with AaronDonnay tallying the assists.

Head coach Jeff Shults saidhe was still impressed with theway his team played in the lop-sided loss.

“I am really impressed withhow our team keeps workingand competing regardless of thescore,” Shults said. “As thegame progressed, we were in-creasing the intensity. By theend of the game, if somebodywho didn’t know the score waswatching the game, they could-n’t tell that we were losing.”

Previous to Monday’s meet-ing with Waseca, senior AaronRhodes was named all confer-ence. Keith Collins, Kyle Beck,

Gustavo Villalobos, IshmaelCalderon Garcia, Quintin Dal-bec and Aaron Geisen earnedhonorable mention honors aswell.

It was 6-0 at halftime ofMonday’s section game inWaseca, but Shults said histeam came out like the gamejust started.

“In the second half we startedwith an attitude like it’s a 0-0game,” Shults said. “Our play-ers never stopped competing

and trying to increase the intesi-ty. Our games are always fun towatch regardless of the score.”

The game ended with GSLaggressively attacking its oppo-nents goal, but just could notfind the back of the net.

GSL was outscored this year101-8, but started scoring goalsmore consistently toward theend of the season.

“Maybe next year,” Shultssaid with a smile.

“I couldn’t have asked for abetter team to play with, andgetting the win tonight justmade it that much greater,” ateary-eyed Frances Zuniga saidafter the game. “I’m not goingto remember all the losses. I’mjust going to remember thisgame and how hard all the girlsplayed for me and Yodee(Rivera).”

Before the game, Rivera saidthe team took a half an hour to“get all the emotions out."

“Everybody just cried andsaid their farewells before wegot to play on this field one lasttime,” Rivera said. “This winwas long overdue, and I’m re-ally glad that we pulled it to-gether today for senior night. Those girls said they weregoing to do it for us, and theykept their word. I’m reallyproud of my ladies.”

In her seventh year as a var-sity player, Rivera said thisgroup of girls is “the best GSLPanther team to go through thisschool.”

The win may not look likemuch on on paper, but head

coach Zach Otto-Fisher said itwill definitely help sectionseedings with Worthington inthe same section.

“It helps from maybe playingthat No. 2 seed, to maybe nowplaying the No. 3 seed,” Otto-Fisher said. “That’s huge whenyou have 15 teams in the sec-tion.”

GSL outshot Worthington32-14, the first time that’s hap-pened all season.

GSL Football Box Score

The Lady Panthers testedtheir endurance last week, going to five sets at Hutchin-son on Tuesday, Oct. 1, andagain the following Thursdayhosting the Annandale Cardi-nals.

The Tigers got the better ofGlencoe-Silver Lake, closingout set five 15-8 after the Pan-thers rallied to win sets threeand four.

Highlighting the match wassenior Steph Klockmannnotching her 100th career aceblock, and head coach LoriSchwirtz receiving a yellowcard (warning) in the fifth setfor arguing a call.

GSL took that fire andtenacity into Thursday, whichsaw a full crowd clad in pinkfor senior night and “DigPink,” a fundraiser for breastcancer patients, while hostingAnnandale.

In the first two sets the LadyPanthers made it look easy, winning 25-15 and 25-18, butdropped the next two as An-nandale fought its way back.

Up 14-7 in set five,Schwirtz brought in seniorAmanda Meyer to serve forthe winning point.

Meyer sent the ball over theleft side of the net directly atone of Annandale’s players, who was unsure of how tohandle the serve. She attempt-ed to duck at the last second,

but was hit in the shoulder, giving GSL the win as the balllanded out of bounds.

“I better not mess up!”Meyer said of her thoughts be-fore that serve. “I wanted tofinish it off, and it was a goodway to go. It felt great.”

Meyer said the team learnedto “never give up and just keepfighting,” when a team fightsback like Annandale. “Wehave the drive, we just have toprove it.”

It’s been said that adversitybuilds character, and the gameagainst the Cardinals offeredplenty of opportunities, butSchwirtz joked that “adversitygives their coach wrinkles!”

“No, that was really goodfor our club because we needto play to win and not to lose,”which Schwirtz said her girlsaccomplished in the fifth set.“Hopefully it just gives us alittle more confidence to knowthat it’s not over after twogames, you have to win threesets.”

GSL now takes to the roadthis week, traveling to NewLondon-Spicer on Tuesday,Oct. 8, before visiting Litch-field for its Wright CountyConference finale on Thurs-day, Oct. 10.

GSL 3, Annandale 0

Winning the first two sets25-15, 25-18, it looked to be ashort night of volleyball as

GSL was up 17-13 midwaythrough the third set. But theCardinals claimed it 25-23.

Trailing for the majority ofset four, the Lady Pantherscame back and took their firstlead, 24-23, after one ofKlockmann’s 18 kills on theevening.

The lead was shortlived as aGSL error and block by An-nandale’s Hannah Spauldingswayed the lead back towardthe Cardinals, who won threeplays later 27-25.

Shortly into set five, the twoteams were locked at 4-4 afterEmily Muetzel notched a killfrom the right of the net, andtook the lead 5-4 as she scoredfrom the same spot on the nextplay.

A six-point GSL scoring runensued after the Cardinalstightened the difference to 7-6,by forcing a Panther error.

Madison Kalenberg startedthe string of scores with twowell-placed kills. After thefirst, Taylor Novak went backto serve for GSL. By the timeshe was done, the Lady Pan-thers had built a 13-6 lead.

Annandale scored oncemore on a GSL error beforeLexi Kerslake notched a kill, giving the Panthers gamepoint.

Schwirtz made a substitu-tion and brought in Meyer toserve with the game on theline, which resulted in a game-winning ace.

game against Dassel-Cokato re-maining on the conferenceschedule.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7p.m. at Stevens Seminary Stadi-um. This year’s Panther Associ-ation Hall of Fame recipientswill be honored at halftime.

***The first drive by the SLP

Panthers started at their own 40-yard line, and eventually ate upfour minutes and 19 seconds ofthe first quarter clock as Towehweaved through the GSL de-fense, scoring from 24 yards out. That put SLP in front 7-0.

GSL’s second drive proved tobe more succesful than the first.

Starting from its own 27, apair of rushes by Anderson andClouse moved the ball to the 40-yard line.

Clouse gained another ninebefore Anderson lost a yard, buthe was face masked for 15yards, which put GSL on theSLP 37.

Another six yards up the mid-dle on two Clouse gives setStuedemann up for a 32-yardtouchdown burst around theright side. The score was evenedat 7-7 with the extra point.

The second play of SLP’sdrive was Bielke’s interceptionthat GSL could not take advan-tage of, turning the ball over ondowns at the SLP 29.

Driving to the GSL 17 on theensuing possession, SLP faced

fourth-and-seven midwaythrough the second quarter.

Grant Walter took a reverse tothe left 17 yards for a scorewhile the GSL coaches pleadedfor a holding call.

The extra point was blockedby Teddy Petersen, leaving thescore at 13-7.

Despite going three-and-outon the next drive, GSL got theball back with 1:40 remainingwhen SLP turned the ball overon downs in GSL territory.

Three gives to Stuedemannand a 15-yard face mask putGSL at the SLP 45.

Motioning a halfback to theleft before the snap, Andersonpumped hard to the same sideonce the ball was snapped. Hethen slung the ball back to hisright, into the hands of Grack fora 32-yard gain down to the SLP13, which prompted a GSLtimeout.

Three plays later and Clousescored when Anderson foundhim in the flat for a six-yardtouchdown. GSL took a 14-13lead into the half.

Heavy rains in the third quar-ter produced undesirable offen-sive conditions as both teamswent scoreless.

The Panther defense came upwith some crucial stops in thethird, but the offense could notturn those stops into points.

SLP went up 21-14 after along sustaining drive that started

in the third quarter, and carriedover into the fourth.

Ejiya scored the SLP touch-down, and a quarterback-keeperby Swenson put SLP back up byseven.

GSL started at its own 22-yard line with plenty of time re-maining. That's when the GSLbacks and offensive linemenfound another gear.

Clouse pounded his way forpositive yardage on every carry, with Stuedemann compliment-ing him along the way.

With a little over a minute re-maining, Anderson handed offto Stuedemann to the right side, and had a defender clip his legsin mid air. No matter, as the sen-ior barrel rolled into the endzone for his second score of thenight.

With the game on the line,GSL decided to go for the winwith a two-point conversion.

Motioning to the right, Ander-son faked the hand off and rolledto his left. Grack ran a crossingroute over the middle and wasopen in the back of the end zone, but the ball slipped through hishands and hit him in the chest, falling to the soggy field.

With only one timeout re-maining, GSL could not stop theSLP running backs from gaininga first down on the next drive.

Swenson knelt the clock outafter that, sealing the one point,21-20 victory.

GirlsTori Burr medaled at the Swain

Invitational in Duluth on Satur-day, finishing 10th out of 214 run-ners.

As a team, the girls came in23rd place out of 30 teams.

Erica Hecksel returned from aninjury, and had the third-best fin-ish on the team, coming in 159thplace with a time of 20:10.

Since the boys had some timeto rest, girls’ head coach Jann

Savre thought the Litchfield meetwould be a good place for ToriBurr to hang back and push someof the other girls on the team.

“Tori Burr was asked to runwith the top pack of GSL runners, which included Jenny Illg, KayleeVenier and Tarin Michaelis,”Savre said. “This was to helppush the pace of this group to seewhat they could run.”

The Panther girls finished inseventh place as well, but Savreenjoyed seeing some of her girlsrun at a more competitive pace.

“Kaylee and Jenny broughttheir pace below the 18 minutemark, and Tarin ran more than aminute faster than her previousbest time,” Savre said. “They alldid a great job of staying focusedon running their best.” Results from Swain Inv.:

2-0 match lead as Kelly Arnoldand Lindsey Wedin retired theiropponents early on.

But much like last week, thedoubles play became a liabilityfor GSL, losing two out of threematches.

That left the fate of the teamin the hands of Rachel Rustenand Callie Raduenz in the No.2and No.3 single spots.

Raduenz won her first set 6-4but dropped the second to KimTrulock. With cramping legs,Raduenz nearly forfeited thematch due to injury, but foundthe strength to play through. Shedidn't look like the same player, though, as Trulock closed outthe third set 6-1, tying the matchscore at 3-3.

That meant the team's seasonwas now riding on Rusten'sracket.

Rusten got some time to calmherself when she got a bloody

nose late in the first set, whichshe lost 7-5. But that time al-lowed her to refocus, and itshowed.

“I started relaxing after thebloody nose. I don't know why,”Rusten admitted with a laugh.“Then I came through and mymindset was, ‘I'm going to winthis thing!’”

And win, she did. With a strong wind blowing

across the GSL tennis courts,Rusten made play, after play, after play, and eventually closedout Jenna Mersberger, whoseemed to be getting tired.

“In the beginning of the thirdset she just couldn't return any-thing," Rusten said. "I took thatas a sign to just keep going andkeep pushing her.”

Playing for nearly threehours, Rusten said she knew thematch was dragging on, and de-cided to conserve some energy.

“We just went on with deucesforever,” Rusten said. “I justswitched my first serve back tomy second (serve), because Ijust had to try and keep my en-ergy going. That's when youknow it's a really long match.”

Head coach Robb DeCorseyvisited with his No.2 singlesplayer after she was up 5-0 inthe third set, not to give her ad-vice, just a bunch of high-fives.

“I was thinking, ‘I better keepdoing what I'm doing!’” Rustensaid with a laugh of the ex-change between the two.

“I think ‘gutsy’ is probablythe word,” DeCorsey said bestdescribes how Raduenz found awill to finish, and how Rustenwas able to come back and win.“Really, she (Rusten) just cameback and dominated the nexttwo sets. Probably because Ishut up and didn't say anythingto her!”

Trend of “nuns”

It is said that the fastest growing sector of previously mainline Christianity is “nuns” – as in those who when presentedwith a choice to indicate religious preference, check “none”. The bumper sticker heralding “I’m spiritual but not reli-gious” – has more and more people inclined to agree, if not in whole, at least in part. Unfortunately, a lot of folks lump

“religion in general” together with every sort of faith community out there regardless of their mission, proclamation, or evi-dence of fruit bearing. Commitments of time, service, or money are also viewed as overly burdensome in a world of far moreadvantageous choices competing for our limited resources. That said it’s easy to point fingers at dull services, windy or incom-petent pastors/leaders, missing young adults/youth, hypocrites, or whatever else is determined to prosper or justify such a worldview.

But what if the “none” phenomenon isn’t about that at all? What if it has nothing to do with a battle between being religiousor spiritual, old or young, traditional or contemporary, or any other excuse someone may be inclined to offer?

More and more I’m seeing a generation or two of the faithful staying away from the church as a regular practice while onlycoming near for weddings, baptisms, funerals, Christmas and/or Easter. Why is that? It occurs to me that such occasions affordsome anonymity because the focus is elsewhere! What if the “spiritual but not religious nuns” are really staying away becausemore than anything they fear being judged, singled out, or made to feel guilty without hope of forgiveness? How sad wouldthat be if my hunch is correct? More importantly, what might be done to change that misconception and reassert Christ’s loveand forgiveness for all people? After all, isn’t that why we call it the “Good News?”
