START OF THE SCHOOL DAY

6

Many of our students travel a long way to study at Elstree UTC. We are delighted that our students are so committed to learning and creating with us.

All Students must be in their base groups by 8.45am to register with their tutor. Although assembly does not start until 8.50am, it is essential that students register first.

Both punctuality and dress code are important parts of being professional. Students can be sent home if they attend in inappropriate uniform - which would make a difficult journey to the college worse. We encourage all of our students to be professional, punctual and well presented.

CURRICULUM

8

TheThe curriculum at Elstree UTC is informed by our specialism and our mandate to prepare students for the real world context of work and lifelong learning. We spoke to our industry and university partners and asked them what they wanted EUTC students to gain from their time here. Some of our partners talked about practical skills, some spoke of confidence and problemproblem solving, many said a collaborative approach and nearly all said creativity.

Last year, a curriculum planning group of EUTC staff met to discuss this feedback and to research changes in national and international education and industry and to think about and plan for what our curriculum offer needs to deliver. It needs to be internationally relevant, it needs to meet the needs of our industry partners and it needs to be engaging and appealing to our studentour students.

We distilled our findings into the following vision statement: The curriculum at Elstree UTC must inspire, resource and empower students to become creative professionals who are culturally competent and technically capable.

So how do we go about achieving that? Firstly we must start with the core subjects.

CCultural competence is dependent on the ability to understand and interpret; to analyse and criticise. This starts with our communications faculty and subjects like English and Film Studies but all subjects teach students how to read texts and make insightful critiques; how to look for hidden meanings and infer truth. Maths and Science teach students the fundamentalfundamental building blocks of the natural order. The theory and philosophy necessary to have ideas that have value and think about things conceptually and then communicate confidently starts with these essential core subjects. As of this year, key stage 4 students will study Maths, Science, English and Literature for 14 hours per week.

C A P A B L E, C U L T U R E D, C R E A T I V E.Technical capability comes from practice. Making and creating and using equipment. Practical courses are essential here at Elstree UTC. Students are able to choose 4 subjects and we encourage a mix of arts and technicals such as Computer Science, Media Arts, Lighting Technology, Photography, Costume Design, Graphics, Sound Technology and Theatrical Makeup. WeWe are lucky to have some industry standard kit and students are able to use professional software and hardware to make high quality productions. Our specialist curriculum allows students to gain technical know how which meets the needs of the creative industries we partner. At key stage 4, students study practical option subjects for 12 hours perper week with experienced specialist staff. At post sixteen, students can study these courses for up to 16 hours per week and in their study periods as well.

Creative professionals think around problems and collaborate to find original solutions. As professionals, our students must be punctual and prepared; organised and resilient. Our PSHEE (personal, social, health, enterprise education) programme and our extended projects curriculum exist to provide students with essential life skills and attitudesattitudes such as punctuality, team work and the reflective ability to learn from mistakes. We have workshops available to students 3 times a week where we teach students industry relevant skills. We also have students working on genuine industry production briefs within our in-house media production company. At key stage 4, students work onon 5 hours of extended project based learning and in post 16 there is more opportunity though the extended project qualification (EPQ).
