I feel very happy to release my first club newsletter. A lot has happened since the lastnewsletter was released by the outgoing Excom. We have seen new Excom beinginstalled in J an this year. The new Excom started its term with officers training andfollowed up by conducting workshops, holding Club contests, participating in Area

contests and the magnificent DIV F conference.

The current Excom has been working very hard to ensure that Diamonds shined in allthe Club, Area and Divisional events. The exemplary mentoring of the club mentorMTM Nusheen Hafiz, the leadership of club advisor TM Satish Kini and immediatepast president TM Abubacker Nazeer had helped the Excom in particular and all theclub members in general to improve their performances.

While Diamonds could not make it beyond the Area con-tests they were seen as participants everywhere andappreciated by one and all for being ready to take upchallenges. Diamonds have proved that participation istheir goal and winning is others opinion.

During the hectic activities of the past 4 months regularclub meetings continued. Taking cue from the club ad-visor TM Satish Kini who said each one bring one.Members have regularly brought in guests. Many of these guests have signed on andbecome members. It gives me immense pleasure to welcome all the new members tothe Diamond Toastmasters Club and the Toastmasters fraternity.

The current Excom is nearing the end of its term. Our president has already an-nounced for elections. I encourage all the club members to take this opportunity andnominate themselves to serve on the Excom team. Truly it will not only be a good ex-perience in learning leadership skills but also help in personality development.

When the current Excom term ends, for me the good thing of being part of the Excomwill also end. Excoms will come and go but Diamonds are for ever.

Know, where you are!!A boat docked in a tinyvillage. A tourist compli-mented the fisherman onthe quality of his fish andasked how long it tookhim to catch them.

Not very long, an-swered the fisherman.

But then, why didnt youstay out longer and catchmore? asked the tourist.

    The fisherman explained

that his small catch wassufficient to meet hisneeds and those of hisfamily.

The tourist asked, Butwhat do you do with therest of your time?.

I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children andtake a siesta with mywife. In the evenings, I

go into the village to seemy friends, sing a few

songs I have a full life.

The tourist interrupted, Ihave an MBA and I canhelp you! You shouldstart by fishing longerevery day. You can thensell the extra fish youcatch. With the extrarevenue, you can buy abigger boat.

    And after that? askedthe Fisherman.

With the extra moneythe larger boat you willbuy, then a second and athird one until you havean entire fleet of trawlers, then a ware house and aplant and leave this vil-lage and move to a majorcity from where you candirect your huge enter-prise

    How long would that

    take? asked the fisher-man.

Perhaps, twenty totwenty five years, repliedthe tourist.

    And then ?? asked thefisherman.

After that you will beable to retire, live in a tinyvillage near the coast, sleep late, play with yourkids and spend with yourbuddies.

The fisherman said, With all due respect sir, thats exactly what I amdoing now. So whatsthe point wasting 25years?

Know where you are go-ing in life. You may al-ready be there.

    Give it a seriousthought !!

Somebody once said thatwork is the father of suc-cess and integrity is itsmother. If you can getalong with those twomembers of the family, the rest of the family willbe easy to get alongwith. Unfortunately, toomany people don't make

enough effort to getalong with the fa-ther. Some even quitlooking for work as soonas they find a job.

Most people's concept ofwork is that it should befun and "meaningful," orwe shouldn't be expected

to do it. Personally, I'mconvinced that the sheerlove of work, with all itsrewards, should provideenormous satisfac-tion. Charles Gow saysthat work gives you anappetite for your meals; itlends solidity to yourslumber; it gives you a

    perfect appreciation of aholiday. The truth is, wea l l n e e d w o r k .

Voltaire was right whenhe said that work keepsus from three great evils:boredom, vice and pov-erty. Edison said, "Thereis no substitute for hard

    work. Genius is 1% in-spiration and 99% perspi-ration."

Bottom line: Unless wework we will miss out onmany joys and benefits oflife. Give your job thatextra burst of energy youalways have on the day

before vacation, and youwill learn to enjoy yourwork even more.

Try this approach and I'llSEE YOU AT THE

    TOP!

    Think Negative, Think Different!

All our lives we havebeen bombarded withpeople advising us tothink positive. Any moti-vational book you pick ina bookstore will say Thesecret of success is Having a Positive attitudein life! But is positivethinking the ultimatum tosuccess? Maybe not!

Putting a positive spin onthings can influence theiroutcomes, but positive

thinking can also blind usto pitfalls. When prepar-ing for a speech, most ofus always think positive, and visualize the deliveryof an excellent speechand winning the applauseof the audience. Whilethis can add up confi-dence, the trouble startswhen things dont go asplanned. When a personis on stage all confident

and giving his speech, and suddenly theres aslip of tongue or he cantremember the next line,in such a situation hegets very emotionallyupset and just freezes onstage. This is wherenegative thinking couldhave come in handy; ifhe had used negativethinking then he wouldhave predicted this and

found a way to move outof this state. When weonly think positive wealways underestimate thepart of failures. But re-member To err is to hu-man, we humans are notperfect; we make mis-takes no matter how hard

we try not to. So if wethink negative and lookfor what could go wrongand calculate against it, itcould turn out to be agreat survival tool.

Karen A.Cerulo, a profes-sor at Rutgers University, has written a book calledNever Saw It Coming. In this book she concen-trates on the Americanpopulation and their inde-structible optimism. She

argues that the PositiveSymmetry in the societycan blind sight the mostforeseeable disasters. Her book has been re-garded as a powerfulcontribution in the field ofmoral sociology by manyscholars. An article by J ohnGravois published in anonline magazine Slatecompares Karen Cerulos

book with The Secret (aself help book that says-we can shape the worldwith our thoughts), whichis one of the fastest sell-ing books today. Throughthe article Think Nega-tive! J ohn points out theerrors of positive think-ing. He tries to influencethe readers to join him inhis request to OprahWinfrey to invite Karen

Creulo in The OprahWinfrey Show, so thatthe concept of thinkingnegative can be broughtinto attention of a massaudience. J ohn arguesthat The Secret asks usto banish worst case sce-narios from our minds,

while Never Saw It Com-ing says such attitudeswill disregard failure, pre-venting us from preparingfor the worst.

Too much positive think-ing helps build an imageof perfection for a per-son. And when such peo-ple come face to facewith failures it will have adevastating effect onthem, injuring their selfconfidence beyond re-

pair. Atul Gawande, MD,of Harvard MedicalSchool says When youhave a major decision tomake- ask what could gowrong? Look far andeven expect failure, itsthe power of negativethinking!Even though thinkingnegative can help saveyour skin, that alone willnot lead to a fool proof

life. Negative thinkinghas its benefits, but aperson who only antici-pates the worst in lifedoes not hold the key tosuccess. So Think Nega-tive in a Positive Way!
