To report animal abuse call (619) 243-3466
Serving San Diego County since 1880, the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s scope of social responsibility goes beyond adopting animals. The Humane Society offers San Diegans a wide range of programs and services that strengthen the human-animal bond, prevent cruelty/neglect, provide medical care and educate the community on the humane treatment of animals.
As one of San Diego’s oldest nonprofit organizations, the Humane Society has campuses in both San Diego and Oceanside, as well as an adoption center inside the El Cajon Petco store. The Humane Society is supported. solely through contributions, grants, bequests, investments, proceeds from the Muttique retail store, and small fees for services.
For your privacy, the Humane Society does not sell, rent, lend or exchange its mailing or contributor lists. The only way your email address could ever be used for a purpose other than what you intended is if you choose to opt-in to a service by providing your explicit consent.
“We adopted Milo, a Pug/Chow Chow
mix in 2008 from the Central Campus
and he has been the smartest, most
loving dog we’ve ever had. He loves
to go everywhere we go, including our
office. He goes to work every day. Milo
even has his own tie for the office, but
usually wears a simple bandana for a
more casual look!
He was a groomsman in my son’s
wedding last year and even danced with guests at the reception.
He is “the boss” like all the staff at the office like to call him and
he loves every minute of it. He is my inspiration and gives me
more joy then anyone could ever imagine!”

“My husband and I discussed it
beforehand, and knew that we wanted
a senior cat over the age of 10. I went
to the San Diego Humane Society and
viewed the seniors and knew that we
wanted a female. Sia put her head in
my hand and I pretty much knew she
was the one.
Sia is a 14-year-old cat who at times
has no idea how old she is. She loves being brushed and loves her
bed. She is a beautiful little lady and we just could not imagine life
without her. I strongly encourage others to adopt a “senior” as they
have so much life and love to give.”
Gina (Humane Society Volunteer)

Imagine for a moment that, one day, you unexpectedly lost your job or your
home. What would you do if you suddenly didn’t know how you were going to
feed yourself, not to mention your pets? If the extra expenses of cat litter or
medication seemed impossible? And then the biggest unplanned pet expense of
all—veterinary care. We don’t want anyone to have to face these difficult decisions.
That’s why one of our most important community programs is Project KEPPT –
Keeping Every Person and Pet Together. It’s a vital lifeline to qualified pet owners
who are faced with a temporary, or long-term, hardship.
Project KEPPT offers a companion animal food and supply bank to families in
addition to free or reduced fee spay and neuter services, licensing, microchipping,
behavior and training assistance, animal-friendly housing referrals, and veterinary
assistance referrals. In the past year we’ve greatly expanded this program so we can
help even more families stay together and we’re putting an huge effort into expanding
this program even further in 2014. Pets belong in homes with the families that love
them. We want to be sure they’re able to stay in those homes.
This year, the San Diego Humane Society has expanded its mission to keep pets
in their homes by launching the CARE program—our “Companion Animal Rescue
Effort”—which assists qualified families facing pet relinquishment with emergency
veterinary care to assist them to keep their pets. It’s all just part of Project KEPPT—
renewing hope, ensuring that animals have healthy food and supplies, and keeping
families together – all in a day’s work at Project KEPPT; and it’s your support that
makes this feasible.
As your local Humane Society, it’s our responsibility to be a resource for the pet
lovers in our community. And it’s our responsibility to make this the best place for
animals and the people who love them. Your support allows us to provide renewed
hope during difficult times. Thank you for giving all families a chance at staying
together.
Warmly,
Gary Weitzman, DVM, MPH, CAWA President and CEO
W E ’ V E G O T M A I L “My husband and
I adopted a blue
pit bull from the
San Diego Humane
Society last January.
Her name was
Peanut, but has
since changed post adoption to Charlee Boots (she has
all white paws).
She is the most friendly and lovable pup a family could
ever dream of. Everyone that comes across her falls in
love with her and her goofy personality. She isn’t the
most coordinated pooch, but she manages to chase the
ball and wrestle with her older sister Emma Rose. I’m
pretty sure she thinks she’s a little Bichon mix like her
sister since she lies on top of you to cuddle any chance
she gets.
My husband and I would like to thank you for saving
Charboots, and allowing us the opportunity to make her
a part of our family. We are truly blessed and absolutely
love having her in our family. We appreciate everything
you do for animals, and are thankful you gave Charlee
a second chance. ”

“Buddy and I just got back from
our road trip to Utah, Colorado
and Oregon and he loved every
bit of it. He got dirty when we
went camping and had fun. I’ve
had him for over a year now and
it seems like it hasn’t even been
six months, but I am so happy
with him. I will have to bring him
by to say hi soon.”
Becky & Buddy
“We adopted Edward in November 2012. We arrived with intentions of adopting a kitten
but after walking around, we noticed a sign on his kennel saying he had been there for
more than 100 days. After finding out that he had been adopted before and given up for
reasons we have yet to see, we had to have an interaction with him. As soon as he entered
the room we immediately fell in love and adopted him. We have 2 big dogs that absolutely
love their fur brother. He acts more like the dogs than a cat, he even comes running when
you call him. He has definitely made himself at home.”
Lindsay B.Dr. Gary Weitzman has a weekly radio program called “The Animal House” on KPBS 89.5. The program offers expert advice on all pet-related questions, and aims to deepen human understanding of animals and explain the powerful bonds between humans and animals.
You can submit your pet questions to [email protected] or via the listener phone-in number 877.610.3647. Tune in to KPBS 89.5 FM every Saturday at 5am and Sunday at 7pm to hear the show!

The following pets are looking for new homes at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA!
Teaching the Youth of Today to Shape a Compassionate Tomorrow
On the surface, our Youth Education Programs focus
on teaching children about animals and how to
interact with them safely and appropriately, which
are valuable lessons. But in teaching these skills, we’re also
helping children learn a much greater lesson – the importance
of respecting all living things.
Last year our Humane Education programs reached
more than 22,000 children, and their personal experiences
demonstrate the link between how people treat animals and
how they treat each other.
Children of all ages have the opportunity to enjoy and learn
about animals in a variety of ways:
Animal Adventure CampKids 5-13 years old spend their school breaks learning
about and interacting with our adoptable animals. Not
only do we offer week-long sessions during the spring and
summer, we offer one and two-day camps during school
holidays. Year-long opportunities for animal-loving kids!
Birthday PartiesWhat better place for a young animal lover to spend their
birthday than at the San Diego Humane Society? Children will enjoy
humane education-based games, crafts and at least three personal
animal experiences with the animal friends of their choice.
Tots and TalesAn interactive story-time program for toddlers, this
program offers stories, crafts, visits with animals and more.
Scout ProgramsGirl Scouts of all ages can earn requirements toward animal-
related Journey badges! We also have Scout programs that
address community service needs, as well as practice leadership
by working together for the sake of the animals. We will also
help Scouts achieve their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
Home-School ProgramsHome-school elementary aged students can join us for
California-Standards based programs. Combine fun and
education with our innovative lessons and hands-on teaching.
OutreachHumane, science and character lessons are taken directly
to schools four days a week. These lessons meet the California
Standards assisting teachers in meeting their classroom goals,
while educating students on proper care for the animals in
their homes and our community. We tailor programs
for all age groups with lessons focusing on issues
such as Dog Bite Prevention, Responsible Pet
Care, Careers with Animals, and more.
Visit www.sdhumane.org
for more information about
these programs.

s Patriotic PawsWe receive calls several times a week from frantic
military members who are faced with deployment or
relocation and are in need of options for their pets.
Through our new program, we are able to work with
military families to find foster programs and other
resources that are available to them nationwide. We
also host regular pre-deployment briefings so that
military can make plans for their pets long before they
are faced with deployment or relocation. Fortunately,
serving your country doesn’t mean you have to lose
your pet. For more information on this program,
contact Brianne Youngberg at 760-757-4357 x2021. s Barktoberfest was a Howling Success!199 dogs and puppies found loving homes during
National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month in October. We were
also happy to see people and their pets understand the
importance of pet identification with 307 microchips and
259 engraved name tags given away for FREE. October
wouldn’t be complete without a celebration of our pit bull
friends! The 2nd Annual Dare to Bull-ieve event honored
10 wonderful pit bull ambassadors in our community.
They were all winners, but Diesel was voted the “Best
Ambassador!” A special thanks to Phil Pace of Phil’s BBQ,
Arden Moore of Pet Life Radio, and our President, Dr.
Gary Weitzman, for judging this sweet and talented group
of pitties. Lastly, hats off to Perette Godwin of CW6 for
emceeing the event.
TRUST: Building a Compassionate SocietyTRUST (Teaching Respect Using Sympathy and
Training) is an after-school program designed to teach our
youth to have compassion and respect for all living things.
Throughout the program, students nurture and train
animals using positive reinforcement training methods.
The program also aims to empower participants to explore
careers in the animal welfare field, develop self-confidence
and identify ways they can contribute towards building
a more compassionate society. Each month-long session
concludes with a graduation ceremony, celebrating the
students’ dedication and success. Some students who have
completed the program return as “Junior Volunteers” in
order to help new participants and animals.
s Celebrating Pembrook’s New Life! You may recognize Pembrook because he was one
of our long-term animals featured in the “Pets in the
Spotlight” in the Summer 2013 issue of Animal Fare.
Pembrook spent about 10 months in our care, so
needless to say, we got to know him pretty well. His
rough and tumble play style and strong athletic build
made it challenging to find the right family fit. Our
Senior Trainers worked extensively on his excitable
behaviors, teaching him manners, tricks and much
more.
Joe (Pembrook’s new dad) met with Pembrook
several times to be sure he could give Pembrook the
type of home he needed, and adopted Pembrook just
before the 4th of July holiday. With a large house,
active playmate, dedicated family, and lots of acreage
to run, Joe offered the perfect home for Pembrook (now
Bentley)!
He now spends his days hiking, playing tug of
war and rough housing with his sister. Bentley is a
great example how time, love and attention can turn
a very active pup into a wonderful, thriving canine
companion!

BFF!The ability to form powerful connections with one another is not unique to humans…
The animals around us have
proven time and time again
that their capacity, even need,
for relationship can be every bit as
strong as ours.
After arriving to the San Diego
Humane Society, it did not take long for
Melody and Long Legs to become best
of friends. The staff at the San Diego
Humane Society even notated:
“Long Legs and Melody
do very well together in their
kennel… They lay intertwined on
their bed and if you take Melody
out and leave Long Legs in the
kennel, he begins to whine…”
It was clear that these two had
a very special connection. So it was
somewhat bittersweet when Long Legs
was adopted by a family in February
of 2012, and forced to leave his dear
friend behind. A couple of months later,
Melody was also adopted by a wonderful
family of her own, and it seemed clear
that theirs was a friendship destined to
be fleeting.
Then, about a year after adopting
Melody (renamed Zoe), her family
started visiting the San Diego Humane
Society again, this time looking for a
friend for her. But after meeting several
dogs, they just hadn’t been able to find
the right fit.
Meanwhile, it was with heavy hearts
that the family who had adopted Long
Legs (renamed Marley) also returned,
but for a very different reason. They
had fallen under hard times and were
forced to move, ultimately finding
themselves in an apartment that did
not allow pit bulls. After unsuccessfully
seeking out foster options, they finally
had to make the difficult decision to
bring Marley back to us.
Knowing the bond that these two
dogs shared, the staff at the San Diego
Humane Society knew just what to do.
They contacted Zoe’s family, who were
still looking for a new friend for Zoe,
and told them about Marley and the
doggies’ connection over a year prior
while in our care. They arrived to adopt
Marley within the hour.
It’s now been a couple of months
since the old friends were reunited and
they couldn’t be happier, according to
their family. These two special doggies
ultimately get to share far more than
friendship. They get to share a loving
family and home, as well.
A ll of us here at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA
continue to be amazed by the multitude of ways our partners
in the community support our work. We would like to extend
a huge and heartfelt thank you to: California Coast Credit Union,
Paw Pleasers, The Golden Paw, The Patio on Lamont, Luv SD Surf,
Underground Elephant, Calibamboo.com and VCA Animal Hospitals.
Each of these companies recently participated in a two-week-long
food drive to help support Project KEPPT (Keeping Every Person and
Pet Together). This important program provides pet care supplies,
services and resources to people during times of hardship, so they can
keep their pets as part of the family instead of relinquishing them to
a local shelter. We are touched by the outpouring of support this food
drive received – the businesses collected more than two months worth
of pet food for our food bank! Every single one of these donations will
go towards helping people and their pets stay together. We are so
appreciative to all the companies and participants who helped make
this food drive such a success! Countless animal and human lives will
be impacted by your kindness, compassion and generous participation.
On their behalf, we offer sincere thanks.

Reaching Out,Renewing HopeHelp is at the Very Heart of Project KEPPT
“If not for the resources provided through Project KEPPT, I would have been forced to find another home for my cats who are my life.” – Nancy G.
Nancy G., a participant of Project KEPPT (Keeping Every Person and Pet Together), describes the program and its services as “…beyond words – a life-saving blessing and comfort.” The loving owner of four cats, one of whom is 15 years old and requires daily insulin for his diabetes, relies on the Project KEPPT Pet Food Banks and additional monthly services to help keep her family together.
Nancy is certainly not alone in
needing a little extra help to care for
her furry family. Over the past years,
most everyone has felt the impact of the
nation’s economic recession in one way or
another, and for many in our community,
maintaining economic stability remains
an ongoing battle.
When Christine R. was laid off
from her job and struggling to make
her mortgage payments, she found the
help and hope that she needed through
Project KEPPT’s support. Christine
states that she’d sooner deprive herself
of food and supplies than fail to provide
for her beloved pets – two dogs and two
birds. Thankfully, this program has
prevented her from needing to go down
that road. “It has enabled me to give my
pets the quality of food they require and
also be able to afford their additional
needs – flea medication, vet bills and
vaccinations. It was a blessing that a
friend told me about this.”
Such expressions of gratitude are
music to the ears of Project KEPPT’s
volunteers, who delight in the
opportunity to help fellow members of
the community during difficult times.
“Animals truly enrich people’s lives. The
bond between animals and humans can
provide so much joy to both. I hate the
thought of anyone having to give up a
pet due to financial hardship, and this
program aims to avoid that happening,”
says volunteer, Jolene S.
Sharing Jolene’s sentiments, volunteer
Clara adds, “As a pet owner, I know
how devastated I would be if I had to
give up my pets for some reason out
of my control, which is what program
participants often face. Seeing people’s
gratitude for the food banks, low-cost
vaccination clinics, and toys and treats
handed out during mobile drives is
always so rewarding.”
Project KEPPT consists of several
monthly Pet Food Banks, which
distribute food and pet supplies to its
participants and are often offered in
conjunction with licensing/vaccination
clinics at both San Diego Humane Society
locations. This program also participates
in numerous outreach efforts through its
community partnerships with other social
welfare organizations.
This year alone, Project KEPPT has
been able to assist more than 9,000 people
through its food banks, mobile events and
homeless outreach. This translates into
more than 11,000 animals impacted in our
community. These are pets of individuals
who want to provide them the very best,
but who are struggling under the weight
of financial hardship and just need a little
help to do so.
Help is what is at the very heart of
Project KEPPT. Whether it’s through
the direct care and shelter we offer the
homeless animals of our community,
the voice given to the voiceless through
our Humane Law Enforcement, or the
assistance we provide to community
members who need a little help keeping
their family together during financial
hardship; we are dedicated to helping
the animals of this community, and the
people who love them.
“The bond that is formed between
people and their pets is so important,
and by keeping people’s animals with
them, we are giving them hope that
their situation will improve,” says
Anyah Hoang, Project KEPPT Program
Manager. “Project KEPPT renews hope
for the people and animals we serve.”
Project KEPPT is in need of pet food to benefit animals and people in need! Donations of unopened dog or cat food can be made at the Admissions Desk at our Central Campus at 5500 Gaines Street in San Diego, or the main lobby of our North Campus, 572 Airport Road in Oceanside.

Can Giving Be Fun?
Have you ever purchased and wrapped the “perfect”
gift for your family or close friend and watched
with excitement as the person opens your gift?
You knew it would be a hit and you could hardly stand the
anticipation. Even though you were not the receiver, you
enjoyed giving the gift because you knew it was just what
the person needed and wanted.
A well planned charitable gift can bring happiness as
well. When you take the time to discover what the charitable
needs are and how you can structure your gift to do the most
good, you find yourself anticipating the actual gift. You know
it will be a hit.
The size of the gift is not what matters most. A gift
that matches a specific need and accomplishes something
worthwhile can be enormously rewarding. Think about how
many programs and services you can support and promote,
including the receiving and adoption of animals, education
outreach programs, animal cruelty investigations, Pet-
Assisted Therapy, and so much more.
You can fill out the form below or contact Nicole
Angelucci, our Director of Planned Giving to make your gift.
Nicole is an attorney with a background in estate planning
and is here to help answer your questions. Just give her a
call at (619) 243-3443 or email her at nangelucci@sdhumane.
org and she can help you have fun by making the perfect gift
for the San Diego Humane Society and you.
