Page 2

Emma’s Corner

HEY ALL!!! EMMA HERE!!. Well I just got back from the hospital from my quarterly kidney flush. While I was there for three days, I had time to reflect on a couple of items. First of all, how thankful I am to part of an organization that makes a commitment to its residents to care for them for life. I have heard that there are other organizations around the country that would have put a cat, with kidney problems like mine, down several years ago. But thanks to great PAWS supporters, I have been able to continue overseeing operations here at PAWS since I was diagnosed with kidney disease five years ago and I am looking for-ward to celebrating my 18th birthday on April 12th. Item two was the terrific support shown by PAWS supporters in response to our appeal letter sent out just before Thanksgiving. It is generous people like you that have allowed me to have my staff help so many of my suffering feline friends. From a kitten born blind to those that have been hit by or thrown from cars suf-fering multiple traumas, your donations have given many cats and kittens a chance they may not have re-ceived elsewhere. Unfortunately we can’t take in or help all of the 20 to 30 cats a day we get calls on. It hurts me more than you know when I have to turn down a friend in need but we only have so much room and manpower to care for them. Knowing this it is very distressing when appeal letters are returned asking to be removed from the mailing list and stating they will no longer support PAWS because we were unable to help them. The most important thing I must do is try to keep the shelter from becoming overcrowded. Overcrowding is perhaps the most dangerous situation to confront a shelter and PAWS is no exception. Overcrowding causes stress on the residents and makes cleaning more difficult with limited staff. Both of these situations drastically affect the health of my friends. I know it is hard to understand why when you call with “just one little’ cat or kitten we have to say NO. We can only efficiently care for about 70 at a time and if we said yes to every call we would be well over 200 in just a few days. With adoption rates of only about 30 cats per month and calls on near 600 a month…….well that is the problem. We have to maintain a safe and healthy population in order to maximize adoption which allows us to bring in the maximum number and be able to get them adopted. The bottom line is the wellbeing of our population, a position we can not com-promise on. The “Big Guy” has cats in his yard I wouldn’t let him bring in. I have turned down Board mem-bers. We have a 10 to 12 month waiting list, and then we have to have space to honor our lifetime return policy. Back in November, I had to turn down $1,000.00 from someone who wanted to by pass the waiting list so please try to understand if I cannot help you with your problem at a moment’s notice. Thanks to all of you who understand my logistical problem and continue to support PAWS. It is time to get back to work and start planning for my 18th birthday party coming up on Sunday April 12th.

Dear Paws and Whiskers,

I am sending you this donation for the holidays because I recently received a wonderful thank-you note from your organization. It was an “acknowledgement” sent because two of my friends from the state of Washington sent you a donation in honor of my birthday. I was very impressed with the handwritten note. The information you included about your shelter makes me think you spend your money wisely and care very much about your animals. Keep up the good work! Sincerely, Mary Ellen Dunn

SPARKLE Hi Dave: How are you? I hope all is well. I just wanted to send you a couple pictures of me looking great while enjoying my new scratching board. Notice my awesome brown paper bags in the background -- I just love sitting on them. (Mom and Dad have to be careful about putting anything on the floor because then I go and sit on it, and then they feel obligated to leave it there for me. I also have a Rubio's canvas bag near the front door that I sit on too.) Anyways, life is good. I'm doing very well. Please say Hi to Emma for me. Thank you for everything. Love always, Sparkle P.S. If you need bigger picture files for any reason I can have my Mom send them to you; she sent little files so they would open quickly.

Lori Lynn - Sammy J - Misty Lou Hey all!! Just thought we would check in after our first year and half in our new home. We moved in here in the summer of 2013 after we ended up at PAWS when Sammy & Misty’s guardians died and mine (Lori) had to return me because she went to a rehabilitation facility. Sam-my J is eleven years old, Misty Lou is 10, and I am 13. Because of our ages, the prospect of our being adopted quickly wasn’t good so a nice couple took all three of us to give us a second chance at happiness. Since we moved in here we have taken over one section of the house and the other cats leave us com-pletely alone. Our area is just outside a place they call the craft room and we get all these great home-made catnip toys all the time. Every morning and evening a plate of Fancy Feast appears for each of us and there is always a big bowl of dry food available for us to munch on. One of the rooms in our area is a bedroom and Misty Lou loves to lay in one of the open drawers and look out the window all day long. Sammy has her own box in the hallway that she likes to sleep in. When ever anyone goes into the bathroom Sammy likes to follow them in and then insists on being scratched all around the ears. I (Lori Lynn) like to sleep on my caregiver’s shoulder whenever he is working on the computer or when he is relaxing in his recliner. I don’t like it so much when he is working on the computer because sometimes he won’t lay back and let me curl up in a good position. Sammy J is our gatekeeper and guards the hall and will not let the other cats in the house come up to our area. She even chases off the

dogs when they try to come up the stairs. Sammy is pictured to the upper right standing on the great cat tree our guardians got from Condos & Trees on Woodville Road. Here at the lower left Misty Lou peeks out from one of her favorite resting places in the barrel on the cat tree. At the lower right I am sitting on the desk in the office waiting for someone to sit down at the computer so I can crawl up on their shoulder and curl up. As you can see we got lucky and really have it made.

LALLIE Came to PAWS on May 7, 2012 as a kitten. She had been living with her mom under a deck in Sylvania when one night the homeowner saw a fox lurking around the yard and feared for their safety. We were gathered up and taken to Sylvania Vet, and they turned us over to Paws and Whiskers. She was adopt-

ed in June of 2010, but returned here to PAWS in April 2012 because her caregiver was unable to afford her. For the next two and half years this sweet loving girl sat at Paws and Whiskers with no one showing any

interest in her. She is a beautiful dilute tortoise shell and a very sweet girl. But no on was interested in her. Then in November 2014 we put her story on Facebook and started getting inquiries from all over the coun-try. After several interview calls to a couple of those showing interest, and checking their veterinary refer-ences, and others we decided on a new home in Illinois. While we were arranging transportation we re-ceived daily calls from her new caregiver, checking on her and giving us updates on toy, bedding, and ac-cessory purchases. Transportation was finally set up and on December 12th, Lallie was off to her new for-ever home. Pictured to the right is Lallie under the Christmas tree at her forever home. Thanks to generous donations from our supporters PAWS is able to offer a lifetime return policy if a cat is adopted from us and then keep them until we can find a new home. Thank you for your support.

VETERINARY COSTS Paws and Whiskers has always had a lifetime return policy so that a cat adopted from us never needs to be home-

less again. With that standard of care also comes a high cost. PAWS is now in its nineteenth year and each year cats returned to us are older and older and are often returned because of medical problems the caregiver did not want to deal with. This past year we had to deal with everything from blood clots that caused a heart attack to diabetes maintenance to special eye surgery to controlling a panleukopenia outbreak. Our vet bill skyrocketed to $66,600, from $40,602.00 in 2013 and $38,613.00 in 2012. This total represents the first time in our nineteen years veterinary expense exceeded payroll. Luckily thanks to our great supporters who responded to several individual events with special donations. Sylvania Vet also helped with their usual large discounts or the total would have been much much more. As our base of adopted cats continues to age we can only expect the cost of their care to continue to increase. We will do our best to keep the vet costs as low as possible and hopefully our great support-ers who have always stepped up when help was needed will continue their support.

Holiday gift wrapping has been a big fundraiser for Paws and Whiskers since we first started in 2000. 2014

was no exception as dozens of our volunteers manned tables at Elder Beerman, Harley Davidson on Cen-tral, and Barnes & Noble on Monroe Street and at Fallen Timbers. All this activity was again coordinated by Joan Baughman who has overseen this event since we began the gift wrapping. After many many hours of wrapping, PAWS realized over $4,200.00 for this year’s efforts. That was six hundred dollars more than last year. Since we began holiday gift wrapping in 2000, our wrappers have received $47,697.75 in donations for the benefit of our feline friends. Thank you Joan for all your hard work. A Special Thanks to

Kathy Simoni, Katie Gilsdorf, and Bonnie Edinger who helped Joan with collections from each site. Thanks also to all the volunteers who gave their time to benefit the shelter during this busy time of the year. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Thank you to Pet Supplies Plus and their great customers for all the great donations over the holiday season. We had trees set up at area Pet Supplies Plus stores where customers could purchase items and leave them for

the shelter. We received hundreds of pounds of food, litter, canned food, and toys for our feline friends. Thanks again to all Pet Supplies Plus customers for your great support.

10,000th Adoption continued from page 1 If 2015 is slightly better than 2014 the milestone could come in mid to late December. We would like to start planning for the big event so if anyone has any ideas for the celebration please send them into the shelter by mail, email, or Facebook. We are open to all suggestions from prizes for the adopter to a open house at the shelter. This milestone was made possible by all of you so we would like everyone to be a part of it.

CHINECHINECHINECHINE I’ll bet you all were expecting to see me in my normal place on pages 8 and 9. Since March of 2012 I felt

like “America’s Least Wanted” with my story and picture plastered in the middle of this newsletter. Well, after almost three years I was adopted on January 5th, 2015. Before I came to PAWS I had a home for a while. My caregivers moved to a new place that didn’t allow pets and they threw me outside like yesterday’s garbage. I was expected to know what to do after never being outside before. My beautiful white coat got all dirty and I was cold, scared and hun-gry. Then I got injured and started limping and someone took pity on me and got me in at PAWS. I was very scared and unsure for a long time and cowered at the back of my cage I eventually came around and started coming out and walking around the shelter. I started sitting in the front window looking for a new guardian to come by. Now I am warm and happy in a forever home thanks to all you wonderful PAWS supporters that allowed me to stay here for three years without giving up on me. I wish I could bring you all a mouse.

Annual Meeting continued from page 1 The menu will be BBQ pork ribs, chicken cordon bleu, shrimp fettuccine, beef pot roast, grilled chicken and shrimp, and tortilla encrusted tilapia, all with salad or coleslaw and potato or vegetables. They will provide a vegetarian plate -- probably vegetarian lasagna -- if anyone orders it when making reservations. Dinners will cost about $12 each, with gratuity and taxes addition-al. Space is limited so RSVP early.

Emma’s 18th Birthday. Join us on Sunday April 12th to celebrate Queen Emma’s 18th birthday. On that day the shelter parking lot will be transformed into a fairgrounds with games, food, craft sales, and raffles. Not to mention birthday cake and if we are lucky a special appearance by the birthday girl herself.. We are going attempt to have an antique fire pumper on hand, courtesy of the Toledo Fire Museum. If we can get the pumper it will serve two purposes. First in case the heat from all those candles gets out of hand and second to give rides to any attendees that want a ride on a fire truck. Hope to see you all at the shelter to help Queen Emma turn 18.

After craft sales at Northwest Community College November 8th, Jackman Road Elementary School on December 6th our Krafting for Kitties group finished the season with “Holidays at the Manor House” on December 12th, 13th, and 14th. Our crafters ended the season adding $5,395.93 to the PAWS treasury which was a 25% increase over 2013. Since our crafters began their efforts for our feline friends in 2001 they have donated $42,687.44 to the shelter. Generous dona-tions from Paws and Whiskers supporters have left the crafters well stocked

with already made crafts and supplies. At this time, they are no longer in need of these items Crafters thank the people that donated. and if anyone is still interested in helping, donations of gift cards like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Michaels, Craft 2000, and Jo Ann Fabrics for supplies like paint, glue, zippers, and other items are needed to complete individual items on an as-needed basis. Thanks again for all your generous support. 2015 sales start on February 14th at the TICA cat show (our 2014 is shown to the right) and the crafters will be set up April 12th at the shelter for Emma’s Birthday. Take advantage of the great upcoming events to pick up some unique gift items not available anyplace else and support Paws and Whiskers at the same time. Meow - meow - meow that's the kitties at the

shelter saying "thanks for contributing to their health and welfare".

Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome

What? I can’t eat it? Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) is most often diagnosed in older dogs, but that doesn’t mean cats don’t suffer from the disease. In fact, 28% of cats between 11 and 14 years old exhibit symptoms of CDS. Felines may be better than dogs at masking the signs of cognitive dysfunction, so it’s important for pet parents to pay careful attention to their older cat’s behavior. Watch for the following symptoms of feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome: Sleeping Habit Changes: If a cat has slept during the day and been active during the night for most of its life, cog-nitive dysfunction may reverse the cycle. Also, sleep may become more interrupted and fitful. Disorientation: Animals with CDS will often sit and stare at nothing in particular. They might also wander around nervously and get stuck in an area of their home because they can’t figure out their way around objects. Behavioral Changes: These changes can vary from animal to animal. Some cats may become less social, while others may stop grooming themselves. If your cat becomes more vocal or stops using the litter box, don’t write these things off as bad be-havior. Changes like these can be signs of CDS or other medical conditions. Any changes in behavior should be discussed with your cat’s veterinarian. CDS diagnosis involves ruling out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms. If your cat is diagnosed with CDS, follow your vet’s recommendations. Some cats can benefit from feline antioxi-dants supplements, while others might be prescribed a medication like selegiline. Also, for cats suffering from CDS, a stress-free environ-ment and sticking to a daily routine is helpful.

What to Expect as Your Cat Ages Cats typically reach senior status at around 10 to 12 years old. Although

they’re still as lovable as ever, some physical and behavioral changes will likely occur. Senior cats tend to slow down as they age due to joint pain. They may stop jumping up on furniture or playing with their toys as often. Hearing or vision loss is also a possibility. As a cat progresses into its teen years, dementia becomes more likely as well, which can cause confusion. This may all sound a bit discouraging, but management of these conditions is possible. Below are some helpful tips for keeping your senior cat healthy and comfortable: •Pay attention: Subtle changes in behavior can actually be clues about your cat’s health. Discuss any and all behavioral changes with your cat’s veterinarian. •Switch from visiting the vet annually to twice yearly checkups. Health conditions are typically more easily

managed if caught early on. Regular blood work will help catch diseases at their onset. •Give your kitty some space: If you have visitors, especially if they’re accompanied by young children, consider blocking off an area of your home for your cat to have some peace. Your senior cat may also need some space from other, younger animals in your household. •Commit to a healthy diet: Older cats are at an increased risk for obesity, which can lead to a host of other health conditions. Consult with a veterinarian about the best cat food for your individual pet. •Invest in comfortable bedding: You may notice that those catnaps are getting longer, so make sure your feline companion has a comforta-ble place to rest. •Spend one-on-one time together: Your cat may not be up for chasing the laser pointer for extended periods of time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spend any quality time together. Try a relaxed play session or just curl up together while you’re reading a book.

Five Reasons To Adopt A Senior Pet If you’re involved in animal rescue, you’re probably repeatedly disappoint-ed when potential adopters skip right over some of the sweetest pets simply because they’re not so young any-more. Below are five fantastic reasons to adopt an older animal, please pass them along!

1. There are fewer surprises! An older animal’s size, personality, and grooming needs are pretty set in stone. You won’t be shocked when your 15 lb. puppy turns into a 75 lb. dog! 2. Training isn’t as intense: Many older pets have potty training down. Also, since they’ve had homes before, they’re typically more able to figure out what humans are asking of them. 3. Fewer chewed up shoes: Puppies are known for making messes. If you opt for a more mature dog, you’re also opting for less of a headache. 4. They’re full of love: It’s pretty obvious how grateful senior pets are for a happy home and they’re glad to repay you with unconditional love. 5. You’ll save a life! Senior pets are some of the last to be adopted. If you choose to open your heart and home to one of these loving ani-mals, you’ll also be a hero.

Forever Homes Needed

REED REED REED REED (FEMALE) Hello my name is Reed!! I came to Paws and Whiskers as a one eyed kitten! I got adopted and had a happy

home for six years. I was returned here because of a broken marriage!!! Mom ran off and Dad could not take me with him where he had to go. I was one of five fabulous felines that got displaced. It was Sooooo sad because my parents really loved me!! My parents always told me what a beautiful girl I am, even though I only have one eye!!! So here I am at Paws and Whiskers

waiting for someone nice to come along and give me a forever home.!! I have hip dysplasia but that doesn’t hold me back!! I love rubbing against my caregiver’s legs!! I enjoy a good scratch on the ears and I like warm enclosed spaces!! If you have other dogs and cats, that’s not a problem as I have lived with multiple pets all my

life!!

MINDY MINDY MINDY MINDY (Female) On February

24th, 2009 I was rescued from a small box in a parking lot by a PAWS employee who found me abandoned there. I am a beautiful Classic Tabby who is looking for a good forever home where I can run and play and not have to worry about ending up in a box in another parking lot. I love to play and I love water. When I am let out of my cage, I love sitting in the

sink trying to get a drink out of the faucet. I would really prefer to be an only cat. Do you have a soft pillow where I can spend my days c u r l e d u p relaxing?

All of the cats pictured here owe their second chance to you and your donations which allow PAWS the luxury of being able to take care of them until a new forever

home is found.

TIGGERTIGGERTIGGERTIGGER (MALE) 13 Years

After leaving Paws and Whiskers in

April of 2001 I never dreamed I would be back here in a cage. Well, I shouldn’t be thinking of myself because my caregiver de-veloped cancer and was forced to move into assisted living and

could not take me. He really took good care of me and I am worried about him. I should be curled up in his lap taking care of him. If I seem a little grumpy that is why. I still have 10 or more good years left in me and hope you have it in your heart to take me home for the second half of my life. Pleeeeeaaase!!!

BLACKIEBLACKIEBLACKIEBLACKIE (FEMALE) 3 Years I have been waiting for a new home since January 7, 2012 because my mom had six cats and was moving to a place that only allowed two pets. I was one of the ones that was going to end up homeless so I came to Paws and Whiskers looking

for shelter to avoid a life on the streets. My search for the right guardian has not been very successful so far, but I guess I shouldn’t complain too much as I am warm and dry. I hear stories from some of the old timers of how bad it is out on the street. I am a bit cage bound but when I come out, I am playful and I get along well with all the other cats. I really am a sweet girl that would like someone to give me all the love I deserve. Could you please take me home so I can find my own special sunbeam? I’m not much trouble and I can be a great companion for these long cold winter nights.

SCAMP SCAMP SCAMP SCAMP (Male) 1 Year My sis-ter and I were abandoned outside in a neighborhood and found by a nice couple who fed and cared for us. They decided we needed to come to Paws and Whiskers so we could find a

nice safe home. I am very shy and need some extra work and attention from a caring understanding person. Once you earn my trust I am very sweet, lovable, and have a great purr. Do you have the patience to work with me and give me a safe and loving home?

FARRIAFARRIAFARRIAFARRIA (Male) 13 Years In April 2002, I was rescued from a hoarding situation in Monroe County Mi. where there were forty cats. The owners real-ized they were overwhelmed, and brought me and my littermates to Paws

and Whiskers. I was adopted right away

and had a home for ten years. Then one day my caregiver decided he didn’t have time for me and that, for reasons I don't understand, I'd be better off here in a cage than alone at my home. I am a real sweet guy that loves to be held, brushed, and scratched. I am not much trouble, really pretty quiet, (except for a purr that sounds like a Harley) and would love to have a new home I could call mine. Wouldn’t you like to have a hand-some guy like me curled up next to you? And you could say you have the only American Curl on the block!

Chine got adopted from this position why shouldn’t I give it a

shot? After all I am the most adorable kitty in the shelter?

It’ getting deep

around here!!

Forever Homes Needed

BABSBABSBABSBABS (Female) My siblings and I were a very

close family and traveled everywhere together. We ended up in a la-dy's back yard who wanted to help us get out of the cold. She opened her shed and allowed us to stay there till there was an opening at Paws and Whiskers. When PAWS final-

ly called and said it was our turn...we were all very very scared!. Little by little we have all come around and found homes till I’m the only one left. I’m a little shy and scared, but if you go slow and give me some time I can warm up to you. I’m a good girl who just wants someone to love me and treat me like royalty.!

BERRYBERRYBERRYBERRY (Male) 13 Year old Orange Tabby I showed up at a farm in Wood County on Christ-mas night 2004. Cold and hungry, I was taken in and then brought here to PAWS. I was adopted in January of 2005, and had a happy home for 3 ½ years but they were not able to keep me. I was then adopted and had a good home for 6 years, but I had some diarrhea problems and didn’t make it to the litter box so I got returned again. (I haven’t had any problems since I’ve been back.) I’m a good guy and loves attention. Don’t I deserve another chance? Wouldn’t I look good curled up in front of your window?

EMMA has authorized special adop-tion prices for all her feline

friends pictured on these two pages.

MANDY MANDY MANDY MANDY (Female) I was a pregnant stray in North Toledo. One day I started to deliver my kittens and was not able to. I tried for almost 24 hours and became very weak and dehydrated. Finally the homeowner who had been watching me realized there was something very wrong, and brought me here to Paws and Whiskers. I was taken immediately to Sylvania

Veterinary Hospital where I had an emergency C-section. My babies did not make it, but the surgery, made possible by your

donations, saved my life. I had been a stray for so long that I'm still not sure about people, but I’d love to give it a try if you are kind, understanding, and willing to give me a chance at a forever home .

CAME TO PAWS JUNE OF 2011 SAMPSONSAMPSONSAMPSONSAMPSON (MALE) I was rescued on Sampson St. in the

Detroit - Sylvania area. That is no place for a cat that is used to living inside. But that is what happened to me when my caregiver was put into an extended care facility and the family did not want to take care of me. I was put out on the street where they expected me to take

care of himself. I found a porch and just sat at the door and cried. Finally the nice lady who lived there was able to make arrangements here at PAWS to get me off the street. Now all I need is for you to adopt me into a forever home with lots of soft pillows for me.

BISSETT BISSETT BISSETT BISSETT (FEMALE) 3 1/2 Years I was put in a cage along with my two kittens on August 30, 2011. I was left in a parking lot where everything was open and I would have had no way to protect my babies if something had happened. When It started getting light some people came along and we were brought inside Paws and Whiskers.

This sure is a busy place. I had lots of cats coming up and looking at my ba-bies during the day. As soon as my babies got old enough they got new homes. I am sitting here still looking for a retirement home three years later. I need someplace where I can be Queen and stretch out and relax by myself. Do you have a place like that?

KYO KYO KYO KYO (Male) Life started in a driveway for me at a very

young age. A nice family heard my tiny cry for help, so they came to the rescue. I needed to be bottle fed so they brought me here to PAWS and I went into a foster home. Life was great and I loved my foster mom, even though I was a bad boy. They decided to adopt me and had me until now. I’m a very picky kitty and only get along with certain people. I do not like other animals or small kids. My mommy had to move in with her parents and I did not like them. So I had to come back to this cage and try to adjust to a new family. Do you think you could have the patience for a picky guy like me?

Hey REED what are you

doing up there? What happened

to Chine?

too!!!

MY CAT PUFF One day a good friend of mine called me and asked me if I wanted a kitten. I quickly jumped the gun and said yes. When I went to pick up the cat he was so small and scared and couldn't stop crying. My friend found him behind a dumpster in the rain at only 4 weeks old, abandoned by his mom. I took him home and fed him and as I would try to pet him while he ate, he would hiss at me. At first I will admit it was a rocky start and wasn't sure how this would end, but after many hours of playing, petting, feeding, and vet visits we became the best of friends. Now, I never have to sleep alone because he cuddles with me. He makes me laugh from all the funny things he does (like randomly stick out his tongue). He starts purring so loudly when i come home from work, and he knows when I’m sad or sick because he lays down on my heart and cuddles with me. He's the best pet I could ask for and i wouldn't want our story to change in any way.

The past year was full of challenges and changes for Paws and Whiskers, but we came through with flying colors and are entering 2015

well-positioned to continue our work of providing compassionate care to the cats in our custody and finding them forever homes.

In 2014, our veterinary costs were significantly higher than anticipated. One reason was the absence of our vet technician for an ex-tended period while she was recovering from a broken arm. This meant transporting our cats to the veterinarian’s office for all medical work, even routine checks and treatments. In addition, several of our cats had unique medical conditions that required special (and expensive) treatment. I’m sure everyone remembers Olaf, who was born without most of his upper eyelids and successfully underwent complex surgery by a specialist in Ann Arbor to reconstruct them.

We also faced some difficult situations during the summer. First, a panleukopenia (feline distemper) scare forced us to close the Shel-ter for several weeks while we monitored a number of exposed kittens in a special “isolation ward” and scrubbed the facility from top to bottom as a precaution to protect the other cats from this highly contagious disease. Then came Toledo’s city-wide water crisis, which required us to secure cases and cases of bottled water to provide safe drinking water for our feline charges.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our Shelter staff and our volunteers, and the financial support of our long-time donors and many new supporters who responded to us through the social media, we surmounted these challenges.

And we had some notable achievements in 2014. We found loving homes for 349 cats, making last year our best adoption year since 2008. If the trend continues, we’re looking forward to our 10,000th adoption in the next 12 months.

Revenues in 2014 exceeded our expectations by 34%. This included Income from our membership dues, special events like the Cool Cat Strut and holiday gift-wrapping, sales of Krafting for Kitties merchandise, generous year-end giving, and the phenomenal results we achieved during our “Giving Tuesday” events in December. Our financial position is solid as we begin 2015 and we will be working hard to maintain that position in the coming year.

Thank you for supporting the Shelter with your time, talents and resources during the past year. We look forward to your continued involvement and another successful year in 2015.

Sincerely,

Pam Fletcher

Fluffy Girl Back in November I was a stray roaming the street in the Hill Avenue and Richards Road area. I found this house with a lot of other cats hanging around and found out it was a good place to get a free meal. I started sucking up to the lady that lived there and showing her what a nice girl I am. Every once and a while when she wasn’t looking I walked into the house behind her to get out of the weather. When she told me “no” I

turned around and went back outside. I was afraid I would have to winter in some cold dark corner trying to stay warm so I started jumping up on a win-dow box by the kitchen window and pawing at the screen. After a couple of weeks it finally worked because she made arrangements for me to come here to Paws and Whiskers. After I got

to PAWS, I adjusted quickly and lo and behold, I found a new home for the New Year on January 4th. I wish all my other friends could be so lucky and find a forever home in such a short period of time. Thanks to the great supporters of Paws and Whiskers I

went from the street to a home in less than a month and half.

IN MEMORY— IN HONOR— REMEMBERING

Occasionally, we need to make a gift in memory of someone or have to find a gift for that hard - to - buy for relative or friend. Might we suggest a gift “In Memory Of” or “In Honor Of” to Paws and Whiskers. When you make a memorial gift to Paws and Whiskers in honor of a loved one, friend, or furry companion, the gift is recognized in several

ways: 1st The gift is recognized in the next copy of the newsletter as listed above. 2nd A card is sent to the family acknowledging you made a memorial contribution. 3rd You receive a handwritten thank you for your donation. 4th All memorial gifts are placed on the Paws and Whiskers web site. This entry includes the name of the person or pet the gift is in honor of and the name of the person

giving the gift. 5th If the memorial is in memory of a pet that has passed, the next cat arriving at the shelter (of the proper gender for the name) is named in honor of your companion that

has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. We hope the times when a memorial gift is needed are very few and far between, but should the occasion arise, please consider a tax deductible donation to Paws and Whiskers.
