WORKS & PROCESS AT THE GUGGENHEIM Mary Sharp Cronson, Producer

Since 1984, New Yorkers have been able to see, hear, and meet acclaimed artists in an intimate setting unlike any other. A performing arts series that explores artistic creation through stimulating conversation and performance, Works & Process champions new works and offers unprecedented access to the world’s leading creators and performers, presented in the Guggenheim’s Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Peter B. Lewis Theater. After most performances, you are invited to continue the conversation with the artists at a reception.

DANCE • MUSIC

New York City BalletJustin Peck: Creation of a Story BalletSUN AND MON, JAN 10 AND 11, 7:30 PM

Preview New York City Ballet resident choreographer and soloist Justin Peck’s first narrative work for the company, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Most Incredible Thing.” The ballet features a newly commissioned score by Bryce Dessner, costumes and sets by Marcel Dzama, and lighting by Brandon Stirling Baker. Prior to the premiere, NYCB dancers perform excerpts and Peck, Dessner, Dzama, and Baker discuss their creative process with moderator Ellen Sorrin, director of the George Balanchine Trust and managing director of the New York Choreographic Institute. This Works & Process program is made possible by Stephen Kroll Reidy, with additional assistance from Barbara Slifka.

THEATER

New York City Center Encores!Cabin in the SkySUN, JAN 17, 7:30 PM The 1940 musical Cabin in the Sky introduced the jazz hit “Taking a Chance on Love” and was shaped by a team of visionaries that included Vernon Duke, George Balanchine, and Katherine Dunham. Today, the show is considered, in the words of Ethan Mordden, “a lost classic: a beautiful language that no one living can speak.” If anyone can speak that language, it’s New York City Center’s Tony-honored Encores! series. Before the Encores! production opens, join the series’ artistic director Jack Viertel and members of the cast and creative team for a conversation about the art of bringing great musicals back to life. Excerpts will be performed prior to the Broadway premiere.

OPERA

A Triple Crown Quest at the Metropolitan Opera:Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and the Donizetti Tudor QueensMON, JAN 18, 7:30 PM

With his new production of Roberto Devereux, director David McVicar will complete the ambitious undertaking of staging all three of Donizetti’s Tudor queen operas, following his earlier productions of Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda. Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky rises to the challenge of singing all three queens in a single season. Met general manager Peter Gelb joins McVicar and Radvanovsky to discuss their approach to bringing these royal figures to the Met stage. Met artists perform excerpts.

THEATER

Shuffle AlongMON, JAN 25, 8 PM In 1921, Shuffle Along became the unlikeliest of hits, altering the Broadway musical forever. Its jazz score by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake and dancing style ignited all of New York City. This spring Shuffle Along, or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, with book and stage direction by George C. Wolfe, choreography by Savion Glover, and starring Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter, Brandon Victor Dixon, and Joshua Henry, will revive the original show and tell the backstage story of its historic creation. Go behind the scenes with the creators and members of the cast.

MUSIC

Commedia dell’arte by John ZornSUN, JAN 24, 9 PM

The maverick American composer and new-music pioneer premieres Commedia dell’arte, a suite of five miniatures inspired by the dell’arte characters Harlequin, Colombina, Scaramouche, Pulcinella, and Pierrot. Be the first to hear the music (and be sure to return to Works & Process at a future date to see the cycle set to new choreography). Zorn participates in a moderated discussion.$20 tickets made possible thanks to the assistance of Adam and Olivia Flatto.

DANCE

Shen Wei Dance ArtsSUN AND MON, FEB 28 AND 29, 7:30 PM

Shen Wei Dance Arts celebrates its 15th-anniversary season with a program that illuminates the synergy between Shen Wei’s visual and choreographic creations. Explore Shen Wei’s creative process through selections from his dances—Connect Transfer, Collective Measures, and a new work commissioned by BAM—and a discussion moderated by Guggenheim curator Alexandra Munroe.

OPERA

Washington National OperaLost in the Stars by Kurt Weill SUN, JAN 31, 7:30 PM

See excerpts from Washington National Opera’s Lost in the Stars, Kurt Weill’s final work for the stage. A gripping musical tragedy based on Alan Paton’s classic 1948 novel Cry, the Beloved Country, set in apartheid-era South Africa, the opera merges influences from Broadway, gospel, African spirituals, jazz, and blues. Artistic director Francesca Zambello moderates a discussion with director Tazewell Thompson and members of the cast.

DANCE

Malpaso Dance CompanyMON AND TUES, MAR 14 AND 15, 7:30 PM

Celebrating the Joyce Theater’s commitment to cultural exchange, Havana-based Malpaso Dance Company performs excerpts from Joyce-commissioned works by choreographers Trey McIntyre and Ronald K. Brown. Brown (March 14 only), Brown’s associate artistic director Arcell Cabuag (March 15 only), and McIntyre participate in discussions with Malpaso cofounders Dailedys Carrazana Gonzalez, Osnel Delgado, and Fernando Sáez Carvajal. The conversation explores Cuban contemporary dance and international voices prior to the company’s engagement at the Joyce.

DANCE

American Ballet Theatre–New WorksSAT AND SUN, APR 9 AND 10, 7:30 PM

For 75 years, American Ballet Theatre has been a home for emerging choreographers. From Jerome Robbins’s Fancy Free (1944) to Marcelo Gomes’s AfterEffect (2015), ABT has long celebrated the importance of new voices in this classical art form. Join ABT artistic director Kevin McKenzie and principal dancer David Hallberg for an evening of discussion and dance as excerpts of new

works from the 2015–16 season are performed by ABT and Studio Company dancers.

OPERA

Les Arts FlorissantsLes Fêtes Vénitiennes by André CampraMON, APR 11, 7:30 PM

Prior to the production’s BAM engagement, music director William Christie and stage director Robert Carsen illuminate their recreation of Campra’s 17th-century opéra-ballet Les Fêtes Vénitiennes, transporting audiences into the delirium of the Venice Carnival. Excerpts are performed capturing the hedonistic preoccupations of the Regency period in France: comic invention, a pragmatic approach to the art of love, biting commentary on social mores, and incisive criticism of the Parisian theater milieu.
